PARENT PAGE
Please find below information regarding this homework booklet.
Although subject staff will run through the homework with
students in the first lesson following the publication of the
homework booklet students can start their tasks straight away.
The teacher will advise the date that they expect the homework
to be completed and handed in by, and your son or daughter will
write that date in the grid on the first page of this booklet.
Any additional sheets required to complete the homework will be
available on the Farlingaye website and distributed in lessons.
If additional differentiated information or worksheets are
available, and it is felt by the teacher that your son or daughter
would benefit from these, the subject teacher will issue them at
this point. Your child will be asked to date the grid to confirm
that it has been issued to them. These will also be available on
the Farlingaye website.
Your son or daughter should only spend the allotted time on
each piece of work even if it doesn’t get finished.
There are extension tasks for each subject. These are optional
and are available to do only if your son or daughter wants to
further develop their interest in the subject.
If your son or daughter does not understand the homework set
or requires further information, they should go and see the
subject teacher before the work is due to be handed in.
If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the
subject teacher or Mr Wakeley.

Y7 English: Extended Learning Task 5
In order to complete your English homework your teacher will give you a copy of a poem called ‘Fire in the Moonlight’. This poem has been inspired by a famous painting called ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh which you will see next to the poem. You should firstly read the poem considering how the painting has been its inspiration.
Task 1
Remind yourself of the definitions of the following poetic techniques:
Metaphor
Simile
Alliteration
Personification
Imagery
Task 2
For each of the following quotes from the poem, decide which of the poetic techniques from the list has been used and explain the effect it has on the reader. You should explain in full sentences.
1. ‘Oceans blue as sapphires’
2. ‘Darkness of dusk’
3. ‘Rolling hills weep’
4. ‘The winds are waves’
5. ‘Orange like fire shimmering’
If you are unsure about any of the instructions, make sure that you ask your
class teacher for help before the deadline!
Task 3
Apart from the quotes on the previous page, what other examples of imagery can you see in the poem that has been inspired by the painting? Find two examples and explain how the painting has inspired this imagery. What effect do you think the poet wanted to have on the reader?
Task 4
Look at the structure of the poem and how it is laid out on the page. Why do you think the poet has done this? What effect do you think the poet wanted to have on the reader?
Copies of the poem can be found on the FLG and school website.
Additionally, your teacher will give you a list of spellings which you will be expected to learn and you will be given a test on these in your English lesson every week.
Don’t forget to continue getting your Reading Passport signed for every half an hour of reading you complete.
Optional extension:
Choose one of the Vincent Van Gogh paintings below. Use the painting to inspire your own poem like the one you have read for this homework. Aim to include
some of the poetic techniques you have analysed to create effective imagery.

assessment. All students will therefore be practicing many
essential skills that will help them develop a good technique for
future success both in RE and other subjects.
The home work will be marked out of 16 and the mark given to
