  • My Term Ahead Farlingaye High School

    Spring Term 2018

    Helping students plan for

    the term ahead.

    Year 8

  • Parents and Carers Page

This booklet has been collated by all of the departments in the school to

help you and your student with understanding the term ahead. Through

the provision of the topics to be studied, some key terms and some useful

sites for further investigation we hope that students are able to take

control of their learning and start to prepare themselves for the lessons

ahead. Each subject area will provide the following information:

    Topics being studied this term

This should provide you with an opportunity to know what topic areas students will cover. With this in mind it can be useful to find out about these topics ahead of time.

The lists provided will be for the whole year group so students are to double check which order they will be studied in when they receive this booklet.

    Key Terms

These key terms will be important for your student to understand and be able to use so please work with them to look these terms up.

Once these terms are understood see if your student can use them in sentences.

Useful websites for further information gathering.

These specifically chosen websites should be used for any further reading that you and your student would like to do around the topics covered.

It would be good to use these following their lesson in school to help reinforce the learning from the classroom.

  • Optional Further Learning Task

This task is being provided for students who have a real interest

in a subject and want to stretch themselves further. This is not a

homework task but students are able to hand the work

completed to staff for feedback and possibly rewards.

If you have any questions about this booklet please do not hesitate to

get in contact with me at the school at

[email protected] or call on 01394 385720. Any

subject based questions can be directed to the departments through

the email addresses identified on the school website.

    Kind regards

    Mr Tunaley

    ICT Technology (ICT rotation)

    Units of work this term.

ICT During this term you will be looking at Video Production. This unit will cover the planning of a TV advert making use of storyboards and understanding how the use of camera angles and sounds can create different moods and add drama. You will plan and create your own TV advertisement by the end of this unit. Technology (ICT) During this term you will be looking at the use of computer modelling and learning how to use and make use of spreadsheet software to model your own solutions to tasks set.

    Key words to investigate this

    term.

  • Extension Task

ICT ‘Find out the difference between ‘diegetic’ and ‘non-diegetic’ sound and then give an example of where each one of these would be used and why? For your answer you could start by giving a definition of each word and then think of a TV show where both these types of sound have been used. For the TV show give details of the sounds with reason why they are diegetic or non-diegetic. Technology (ICT) Computer modelling can be used in many different ways. Think of two advantages and disadvantages of using a computer model in the prototype of an aircraft. The type of areas could be in safety or performance but you will need to give detail in your answer to show an understanding of the positives and negatives.

    English

    Units of work this term.

Your teacher will be choosing from one of the following units: The exploration of relationships in a text

or texts of the teacher’s choice A study of the science fiction genre in a

text or texts of the teacher’s choice The exploration of issues of cultural

identity in a text or texts of the teacher’s choice

The analysis and production of travel writing

The study of Victorian literature An exploration of how the countryside

has inspired authors A study into Spoken English

Key words to investigate this term.

In order to build up your vocabulary for analysis of language and for your own creative writing, you should remind yourself of figurative language techniques and poetic terminology. Your teacher will also be giving you a list of spellings for the term which you should be learning for a weekly test in your lessons.

  • Sources of information for further enrichment of the topics.

Continue to independently read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to support your reading and writing in lessons. Remember to get your Reading Passport signed for every 30 minutes of reading you complete.

    Extension Task

Ask your teacher for a booklet to complete which will focus on improving your spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) skills and which will help you to improve your vocabulary use. With increased demands on students in this area in exams, it is vital that the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the English Language are understood and that you apply them accurately and consistently. The booklet will ask you to complete a variety of tasks on the following: Full stops, commas and capital letters

    Apostrophes

    Homophones

    Adjectives

    Similes and metaphors

    Connectives

    Sentence structure

    Text organisation

Complete the sheets on the topics you feel you need to practise. The booklet can also be printed from the FLG/website. Please also look at the English notice board outside

the English Team Room for opportunities to enter a

variety of writing competitions with fabulous

    awards for talent and creativity.

Then have a look at some footage of that sport being played and see if you can recognise what type of defensive system they are playing.
