Head’s Message As we approach the half-term break, I would like to commend all of the Year 11 and Sixth Form students, and the staff working with them, on the hard work being done to meet the demands of this time of year. We are in the midst of the exam season now, and I have been impressed by the calm and positive approach being displayed around the school by those involved in this very challenging period. I would encourage all students in the exam years to use the half-term break wisely in order to ensure that they are both rested and prepared for the further challenges to come in June, and to ask all their families to continue to do great work in supporting them.

Thanks go to those parents and carers who have contributed to our recent consultation on the proposal to create a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). The MAT Steering Group will be meeting soon, as will our Governing Body, and both will be looking carefully at the contributions of all those who have responded during the consultation process. More information on the MAT proposal will follow next half-term.

As always, this Forum contains lots of wonderful news about extra-curricular activities and events at school – for families as well as for students! I would like to encourage all parents, carers and students to keep getting involved in these activities and events, as they are a huge part of what makes Farlingaye special and enrich every participant’s experience of being part of the school community. Please do come along to the upcoming school production of School of Rock and the GCSE and A level art exhibitions – these are fantastic opportunities to see the creativity of our students and to celebrate their successes.

I hope that everyone in the Farlingaye community has an enjoyable and peaceful half-term break.

80s Live Band Disco a Huge Hit A great night of dancing was had by everyone who came to the FHSF fund raising 80s Disco at the school on April 22nd. We were very lucky to have the fantastic local band “Flaming Cheek” play all evening at no charge - thanks so much to all of them for belting out hit after hit, keeping everyone on the dance floor. And we even had some nostalgic ‘dancing round the handbags’!! There were some amazing 80s outfits too - whose Dad came as Adam Ant? Was your Mum the best Madonna lookalike there? Thanks also to Emma Lawrence who started preparing the slow cooked pulled pork at 4am that morning and boy did it taste amazing together with her equally delicious homemade coleslaw! And finally, thanks to everyone else who helped make this event happen, achieving not just a great night out but much needed money for the school to buy extra resources that are no longer available from government funding like the recently purchased lacrosse equipment. And the next few ideas for FHSF contributions are visualisers for the Art department, first-aid courses for Year 9s, additional outside benches and an extra table-tennis table. The profit of £780 from this event will help enormously so thank you to all who supported it and for your future support of FHSF events.

Art Workshops As part of our ongoing program of art workshops we invited Deborah Burrows to lead a painting session in March. Deborah is a landscape painter who works in acrylics and creates striking images using strong compositions. The workshop was well attended by members of the local and school community, who came along to learn how to create their own masterpiece and the secrets to a successful landscape painting. From beginners to more experienced artists all those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the process of learning about painting on canvas and working with Deborah's lively and accessible tuition. Our workshops are open to all members of the community and all ages. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to be added to our mailing list to receive news about future artist led workshops. Mrs Hetherington

Book Reviews The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson Being a teacher of English and Psychology, this title naturally stood out to me. Yet it went so much further beyond the typical murder mystery I was – wrongly – expecting (and, admittedly, was excited for). Ronson, a journalist by trade, has such a witty, intelligent way with words, and his biographical tales into the weird and wonderful corners of the world take you on a journey with him into the sublime. This particular piece tracks Ronson’s meetings with “psychopaths” from all walks of life – from CEOs to killers to cult leaders – and opens the readers eyes to the fascinating nuances of the human state; a concept much more complex than many of us realise. “I wondered if sometimes the difference between a psychopath in Broadmoor and a psychopath on Wall Street was the luck of being born into a stable, rich family.” – Jon Ronson Miss Mardle The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho A truly international classic that has been translated into at least 69 languages and therefore must contain some universal truths about the human condition. This allegorical novel made for a compelling read which, at points, left me spellbound and transfixed in terms of its symbolic meaning and quasi-philosophical concepts. It is a book for all; an elixir of reading life! Mr Tighe The Accident Season by Moira Towley-Doyle It's the accident season, the same time every year. Bones break, skin tears, bruises bloom. Towards the end of October, foreshadowed by the deaths of many relatives before them, Cara's family becomes inexplicably accident-prone. They banish all dangers to locked drawers - but injuries follow wherever they go and the accident season becomes an ever-growing obsession and fear. To put it simply, this is one of those books that just grabs you and refuses to let go. Perfect for fans of We Were Liars or The Graces, Fowley- Doyle has created this darkly beautiful tale with an ethereal tone, strong narrative and twists that leave you breathless. Emily Mitchell

East Suffolk Holiday Activity Fund Olivia Heeley spent some of her Easter break, while not revising, sitting on a youth panel considering funding applications for the East Suffolk Holiday Activity Fund. She, along with two other girls and two boys from the Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District, spent much of April 12th 2017 in Lowestoft considering bids from a number of organisations. From 2016 till 2018 Olivia, with her colleagues, will have been responsible for the monitoring, evaluating and the funding of a number of projects in East Suffolk. They have been given the task of managing a £50,000 fund given to them by the East

Suffolk Partnership (ESP). Olivia is also a regular attendee at the ESP board meetings, held throughout Suffolk & Waveney districts, where she is an ambassador for the issues affecting young people in rural and semi urban settings. Her input to both these initiatives has been invaluable.

German Exchange At the end of March, a group of students from Farlingaye and Kesgrave High Schools embarked on the German Exchange. We were fortunate to be partnered with Friedrich Keonig Gymnsasium, a wonderful school located in the historic city of Würzburg. During the week days, whilst our exchange partners were at school, we went on many trips. On the weekend, they planned activities for us where we would soak in the culture, improve our speaking and understanding of the language and most importantly have fun! We started our first full day with a tour of the school and taking two lessons with them. Then we walked to Festung (a fortress on the hill above the city) where we walked around and looked at a map of the World War 2 bombings. Everyone had an evening of bowling with their partners, which was lots of fun. Our partners arranged weekend activities to do with them and our friends. We went to Palm Beach (a large, mainly indoor water par with lots of huge slides.) Once we got back to our partners’ houses we had barbecues with bratwurst and sauerkraut. We also went to Kletterwald, which is just basically a higher version of Go Ape. This was followed by a meal out and then a trip to the Frühjarsvolksfest. After the weekend, we visited Würzburg’s Mainfrankentheater, and had a tour behind the scenes, then a tour of the old part of Würzburg. We had a day trip to the beautiful city of Bamberg. Another trip was to the Residenz (a palace and UNESCO world heritage site), then we had a trip to the Town Hall where we were given a talk by the Mayor. This was in German, so Mr Craig translated for us. That evening we all to play glow in the dark mini golf, with our faces painted in neon colours. It was a lot of fun. The whole trip was interspersed with gift shopping time, and lots of bratwurst and ice cream. On the last morning, we all wanted to stay longer. We had two lessons at the school before we left for Nuremburg, to explore the city and eat more ice cream. Then we went to the airport and returned home. We’d definitely take part in another Exchange. It was interesting to see the differences between Britain and Germany, especially the school day which had more lessons than we have and started earlier and on some days finished at 1pm. We were partnered really well with our German counterparts. We all had lots of things in common with them which definitely made it easier to fit in. We feel our German has definitely improved since the trip! Thank you to all the teachers that helped plan and arrange the trip, we all really enjoyed it. Katie Bradley and Xanthe Robson Year 9

Music Exam Results Since my last article in the Forum, our musicians have had some fantastic exam results! We continue to enter students in a termly basis for Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Exams, both practical and theory and also for County Music Service practical exams all with outstanding results. We have increasing numbers of students sitting drum exams with Trinity College London as well Trinity College Rock and Pop exams which examines guitarists, drummers and singers in more popular styles, and we are enjoying huge success in these areas with the vast majority of candidates achieving merits and distinctions. It is really interesting to see students progressing through their grades as the years go by and it is lovely to see the achievements of students attaining the very highest marks at Grades 7 and 8. On that note, congratulations go to the following students:

Young Musician of the Year Last month, Annabelle Cooke, Year 11, won the Intermediate Section of the Suffolk based Young Musician of the Year 2017 held at the Abbey School. The competition draws in contestants from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex. Annabelle came first playing a Clarinet piece entitled Dance Preludes 1, 2 and 5 by Lutoslaski, in a field of 12 musicians. The standard of competition was extremely high with contestants from the Suffolk Youth Orchestra and Aldeburgh Young Musicians as well as other County Ensembles. Well done Annabelle.

Annabelle is third from the

left with her trophy.

Food Lesson On Thursday May 11th, Luke, an ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and the chef at the Crown and Castle in Orford, taught the technology students to prepare food using the Food Revolution manifesto, which emphasises that children should learn to cook healthy meals. This year, Luke was accompanied by a chef from South Africa, Callie-Anne Gavazzi, who has her own cookery show “Callie-Anne Cooks Into the Wild”. She has taken cookery back to basics at the luxury safari camp that she manages. Her 5 star restaurant standard food is cooked in the wild in a wood fired oven or a gas stove. In a highly informative and fun session, they showed the students how to make fresh pasta and cook it with mussels. They also made delicious salads from local ingredients, and discussed food sustainability. The dessert was a melt in the middle chocolate sponge. Everyone had the chance to try the different dishes.

ERASMUS+ 3D At the beginning of May for three days, Farlingaye hosted the first partner school meeting of the ERASMUS+ 3D in Education Project. The main focus of the ERASMUS+ project is to develop and test lesson plans for a range of subject areas for use with students aged 14 upwards. The project, which started in September 2016, will run for two years. The first face to face meeting with the other partner schools was at a training week in Boras, Sweden in January 2017. The visiting partner schools, brought 2 representatives each, and were: De Jutter, Netherlands; RSG Magister Alvinus, Netherlands; Erikslundkolan, Sweden; Vågen Videregående Skole, Norway; Kummun koulu Outokummen kaupunki, Finland; and I.E.S. L’Eliana, Spain. The event was also attended and supported by Jonathan Keep, from the UK, and Eileen Blackore, from the Netherlands. The meeting included visits to BT, Aldeburgh, Jonathan Keep’s studio, and a practical workshop. The visitors made things on the £D printers from plastic and cookie dough, which as them cooked for consumption.

Book Mastermind The final of the Suffolk Schools Library Service Book Mastermind Competition was held in Stratford St Andrew on Friday 5th May. Our winner, Oliver DeVita 7R attended the final with his supporters Morgan Crabb, Martin Abbott, Toby Hutt, James Oxlade, Matilda Sheldrake and Sophie Cumbers. Oliver answered twenty five questions on Mr Stink by David Walliams and went on to answer 20 general knowledge questions. Oliver competed against several schools across the County and came third. After the competition special guests authors Ruth Fitzgerald and Dave Shelton, spoke for an hour and they were very funny and interesting. All students had a chance to meet with the guests to have books signed. Well done Oliver!

Readathon Thank you to everyone involved who made this year’s Readathon such a success. We are hoping to have raised over £1000 for charity. On Friday May 12th, 151 students settled down in the Library to complete a reading marathon from 8am till 6pm. The students had a great time, and were sponsored to complete the event - the money raised will be divided up into 3 parts, PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, School library and Reading Club. Thank you to Mr Stuart, Sophie, Mr Smith, Mrs Frost, Brian, Ms Tyndale-Hardy and Dr Sievewright, who all read to the students throughout the day. Students had a wonderful time reading with the friends and at the same time raising money for worthwhile causes. Thank you to all the students who take part and thank you to Mrs Frost, Ms Anderson and Mrs Houston who helped organise the day. Mrs Mason

RoboCup CoSpace UK Challenge On Tuesday 25th April, Mr White took six Year 7 and 8 students (Finn Boorne, Alfie Bevan, Daniel Reeve, Daniel King, Douglas Downing and Barney Barnes) to BT at Adastral Park for the RoboCup CoSpace UK Finals. On the day the students worked in pairs and had to program a virtual buggy around a field to collect as many points as possible in eight minutes. To make it more difficult, the students only received the challenge information on the morning. They then had two hours to prepare for the knock rounds. The event was very tense and exciting. Competition was very tough, with over 30 teams from all over Suffolk and Norfolk. Although they did not win the overall competition, the teams worked really work and are now looking forward to next year’s competition. A good day was had by all.

Year 9 Rugby The Year 9 Rugby team were once again County champions. A warm afternoon at Ipswich Rugby Club saw the best teams in the County competing for the top spot. We fielded a strong side and despite a slow start managed to win our first game by the odd try. Our greatest strength was our speed: Elliot Baskett and Liam Smy caused the opposition problems all afternoon. Sam Wainer captained the squad and performed with determination and aggression. He was instrumental in setting up a lot of our play, carried the ball well and scored important tries when we needed them. Tom Rankin was also a key player who used the ball intelligently. George Stiff played the whole tournament with the right levels of intensity and aggression, his tough tackling and contribution at the break down was also vital to our success. The final was a tense affair but gradually our ability to break the gain line and keep the ball meant we were able to score when it mattered. It is a fantastic achievement by all the players who thoroughly deserved the accolades. We were not able to compete in the Eastern Counties finals because they had been played two days before. Hopefully next year we will get the opportunity. Well done to all the players.

Holiday Requests As we seem to be getting an increasing number of requests for holidays during term time, and in light of the recent ruling following the case of Mr Platt in the Supreme Court, I thought it might be useful to remind parents of the Government expectations from the Department for Education (DFE) and the school policy regarding this. The DFE states:- You have to get permission from the head teacher if you want to take your child out of school during term time. You can only do this if: you make an application to the head teacher in advance there are exceptional circumstances The law says that parents/carers, whose children are of compulsory school age and absent from school without good reason are committing an offence and the parents/carers may be prosecuted in the Magistrates Court. The school’s attendance policy, which is available to view on the school website, follows the recommendations from Suffolk County Council’s Education Welfare Service and of particular note is the following clause:- 5.2 Farlingaye High School will consider every application individually. Its policy is NOT to grant leave of absence for a holiday other than in the most exceptional circumstances. Time off school for family holidays is not a right. An application must be made in writing, with appropriate evidence, 6 weeks in advance of the intended holiday. Request for Leave of Absence forms are available from the school reception, or on the school’s website. I hope this helps to clarify the school’s position. If you have any questions or queries relating to this then in the first instance please contact Mrs Jones our Attendance Officer, at the school.

The Green Council has registered the school into the Green Tree Schools Award with the Woodland Trust. The award scheme recognises schools for completing environmental projects and encouraging outdoor learning. The award scheme is a fantastic way to enhance our school's green credentials while inspiring the pupils about woods and trees. The school will gain points for completing activities and progress through bronze, silver and gold levels to the prestigious platinum award. Many activities across the school can count towards the scheme a few examples are listed below.

Recycle in school. Reduce your school's CO2 emissions. Tree planting. Tree champion challenge. Summer Tree Party challenge.

Our Green Tree Schools Award is free, fun and has fantastic activities to help our school celebrate woods and trees. If you want to take part or develop activities within your department then speak to the green council members. We can all look forward to National Tree Week commencing 25 November 2017 where the Green Council will be planting more trees to add to those we’ve previously planted and providing ideas and resources for tutor time and assemblies. For more information see Mr Hatfield or Mr Magee.
