ANY COACH, PLAYER, FAN or offi cial will tell you that winning away from home is a good indicator of a side’s

strength in the competition.Having just collected two wins in a row

on the road, the Panthers would have to be pretty happy with themselves heading into Sunday afternoon’s clash with Newcastle at Penrith Stadium.

Last weekend’s win over the Eels wasn’t the comprehensive thrashing that many expected, but guided by Luke Walsh’s kicking

game, the Panthers managed to grind out a tough win that probably would have a better mental impact than a 40-point thrashing of their arch rivals.

I’ve said it a few times this year but I’ll say it again in this case – Penrith would have lost that game against the Eels last year, or the year before. The side just didn’t have the same kind of spirit in defence, or commitment to the game plan, to sustain pressure put on them by the opposition.

This is a very diff erent Penrith with a very diff erent attitude.

Unfortunately, the same old injury problems exist though, and the Panthers will this weekend be without Nigel Plum, Matt Robinson and Brad Tighe after the trio suff ered long-term injuries against the Eels.

The loss of Plum is a particularly tough blow. With Tim Grant having a hot and cold season and Sam McKendry being injured, Plum has stepped up this year to be the club’s leading front rower.

The Panthers sit in seventh position heading into this weekend’s match, equal with the Knights on 20 points, who sit one place above them thanks to a slightly superior for and against.

Games like this against clubs who sit in that clump of sides from sixth to 10th on the ladder are crucial and in the long run, worth much more than the two competition points on off er for the win.

At the moment Penrith control their

own destiny, but one slip-up could see them out of the eight and with some big games coming up against Cronulla and the Roosters, dropping a game like Newcastle could be a fatal blow.

The Knights, on their day, are a quality side. They can put 30 or 40 points on you in the blink of an eye, but conversely, they’ve been hammered by just as many points a few times this year as well.

One thing I think is for certain is that you won’t see a scoreline anything like 8-6,

which is how the game between these two clubs earlier this season fi nished.

Both sides have found their point-scoring mojos since then.

In fact, one of the real highlights this weekend will be seeing the rejuvenated David Simmons – who has scored 15 tries this season – up against try-scoring machine James McManus, who has scored 16. McManus will be backing up from State of Origin duties, but it’s fair to say that the

winner of the battle between these two wingers could decide the end result.

On the other side of the fi eld, Akuila Uate fi nds himself up against speed machine James Roberts – who we’re all waiting to see in clear space. Again, the battle here will be important, and it is no secret that Penrith’s left-side defence has been a bit of a worry in the last couple of weeks.

With points out wide on off er, again much of the pressure this weekend will fall on Walsh, whose vision has been superb

this season. Walsh must lay the platform for the points out wide and control the game from the outset – one gets the feeling that if Penrith were to get up 12-0 in the fi rst quarter of the game, the Knights won’t have what it takes to come back.

I’m tipping Penrith to win, but if it does come down to the fi nal 10 minutes of the contest, I think Newcastle have the slight advantage in their ability to create a magical spark that could win the game.

LUKE WALSH HAS REFUSED to talk about his move to England, saying he’s fully focused on Penrith’s campaign of

reaching the fi nals.Armed with questions about Walsh’s

impending move to St Helens next year, Extra Time was prohibited from asking the in-form halfback about his decision to leave the NRL.

Instead the 26-year-old said he’s worked

very hard to improve various parts of his game to ensure Penrith have the best shot of remaining in the top eight until season’s end.

“I believe we can stay in the eight… it’s just about getting better each week, that’s what we’re concentrating on,” Walsh said.

“We’re focusing on all the little things that we value, especially our defence and just playing tough. If we keep working hard at that each day at training, we’ll get better and

better and defi nitely stay in the eight.”The former Newcastle Knight signed a

two-year deal with English Super League side St Helens back in May and since then has continued to play brilliant footy, shutting up his long list of critics.

Walsh said a lot of hard work behind the scenes and the introduction of fi ve-eighth Isaac John to the mix has seen him step up his game.

“Isaac’s been great, we’ve struck up a pretty good combination,” he said.

“Isaac takes all the pressure off organising players which has really helped me.”

Walsh’s defence has also been a highlight

of his resurgence this season.“If I get my defence right, the attack

comes… so I’ve been concentrating on playing tough defence,” Walsh said.

Walsh has been an integral part of Penrith’s team ever since he joined the club in 2009. However, mediocre performances over the years meant Walsh’s days were numbered, with Panthers offi cials opting for the combination of Isaac John and former Dragons star Jamie Soward in 2014.

But until both parties part ways in September there’s still a big task at hand for Walsh – leaving a lasting impression behind at the Panthers.

LAST WEEK’S PERFORMANCE AGAINST the Eels was not one to write home about and if the Panthers are to make

a stake for the fi nals this year they need to make sure they are turning up 100 per cent to every game as it was evident that they may have taken the Eels for granted believing they only had to turn up for the win.

Luke Walsh however must be commended for his display with the boot as this is what won the game.

His kicking game this year, particularly since he announced his move to England, has guided the Panthers around the park.

This week sees Penrith up against the Knights and given the bye for the Bulldogs

and the possibility of another team sitting equal on 20 points winning, a loss could put either of these two sides out of the eight.

It makes for what will be an intriguing game of footy on Sunday afternoon.

-------I am all for making changes for when

Origin is played, having it stand alone on successive weekends and suspending the regular competition, but why does this only get raised at Origin time?

A new TV rights deal and Players CBA, that should be there to ensure the welfare of the players, was just brokered so shouldn’t these issues be addressed accordingly during these negotiations?

I still believe too much was focused on the

dollars the game’s elite were to earn rather than other areas of concern and this justifi es my point.

-------I do not think that the top eight will

change too much from the 10 sides currently fi ghting it out so surely a big spotlight must be shining on the coach of the Broncos, Anthony Griffi n.

High standards were previously demanded at Brisbane and surely this has not been delivered of late.

I ran into a several former Broncos associates last week and all said that the club is not what it once was. The departure of Wayne Bennett and then recently Darren Lockyer has clearly had a huge impact.

SOME MAY SAY THEY are past their best because of their age but Panthers stars Kevin Kingston and David Simmons

are proving that statement to be way off the mark, with both players producing standout seasons and playing a huge part in Penrith’s top eight surge.

Penrith’s 30-year-old inspirational captain and 28-year-old in-form winger turned back the clock in their 17-10 win over the Eels last Saturday night, scoring all three of Penrith’s tries in the match.

Kingston believes Penrith’s mix of youth and experience is the key in their successful season so far.

“That’s one of the positives about our team, we do have a good balance,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a debutant or a veteran, you’re doing your role and you’re part in the team.”

Kingston added that it was great for the younger players to be able to play in a side that was developing a winning culture.

“The diff erence between last year and this year is last year we had to blood people earlier than expected and that’s not the best transition into fi rst grade,” he said.

“You want to be able to blood them gradually and have that winning culture to bring them into as well.”

Also having a huge impact on Penrith’s younger brigade is David Simmons, who’s having a season to remember.

After scoring just two tries in 2012, Simmons is having no trouble fi nding the line this year, racking up 15 tries already. He’s now just one try shy of his record 16 from back in his days as a Cronulla Shark.

“We’ve got a few guys that are getting

close to 30, which is old for a rugby league player, but I think the younger guys who come in give us a lot of enthusiasm,” Simmons said.

“You sort of remember you were like them one day and you start to think about the blokes that used to help you when you were a kid, and you have a lot of respect for those guys.”

Simmons said he’s enjoyed imparting wisdom on some of Penrith’s brightest talents in Matt Moylan and James Roberts.

“For me personally, they are two terrifi c players who I enjoying helping,” he said.

“I can’t wait to watch their careers after I’m well and truly done.”

Kingston’s future is still up in the air beyond this season. Whilst he was told he could look elsewhere, there’s been speculation in recent weeks that the Panthers have been so impressed with his leadership and form that he may secure a new deal at the club.

Simmons re-signed earlier this year for another two seasons.

This Sunday, Kingston and Simmons will feel like youngsters on the park when they come up against Newcastle, who boast an ageing squad that features a former Panther in the shape of 35-year-old Craig Gower.

But Simmons doesn’t believe Gower will experience too much of a hostile welcome home reception.

“I don’t think there will be emotion in the game. Gowie left here on good terms and is a legend of the club,” he said.

“I’m sure the fans and the club will welcome him back. There will be no hard feelings at all.”

PANTHERS HOLDEN CUP COACH David Tangata-Toa is hopeful wonder boy Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will make

his long-awaited comeback this Sunday afternoon.

The try-scoring machine has missed the last month of the Holden Cup competition due to playing in other schoolboy and representative tournaments outside of the NYC.

The only thing stopping the talented teenager from making his way back this weekend against the Newcastle Knights is a concussion injury he received whilst playing in the U18 National Schoolboys Championships last week.

“Dallin actually got knocked out in the second game up in Cairns and didn’t end up playing the last two games,” Tangata-Toa told Extra Time.

“He won’t train until the back end of the week and will have to pass all the testing procedures before he’s cleared to play.”

Despite being unable to play for most of the Championships, Watene-Zelezniak still made the prestigious Australian Schoolboys team based on merit.

Last Saturday afternoon the Panthers recorded back-to-back wins when they defeated the Parramatta Eels in a big way 44-10.

The Panthers were on fi re away from home leading 22-0 at half-time, then 28-0 minutes into the second half before the Eels fi nally got over for two opportunistic four-pointers.

Tangata-Toa said Penrith’s victory over the Eels was his most pleasing of the season so far.

“I was happy with how our boys competed for the full 80,” he said.

“It was good we made it a dominant performance and it’s the fi rst time all year we played for the full 80 minutes.”

The Panthers play the Knights on Sunday at Penrith Stadium at 11.45am.

PANTHERS FLYERS BRAD TIGHE and James Roberts got back to their roots last week when they visited Emerton

Youth Recreation Centre as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The two proud Indigenous products got in the thick of the action by helping out with the Pass the Ball competition, signing autographs and taking photos with young fans – as well as playing a casual game of

touch footy.The highlight of the afternoon was seeing

20-year-old Roberts becoming a huge hit with the kids after he struck up a game of touch, which will no doubt leave them with memories for a lifetime.

“It's been good coming out here, talking to the young kids and being a role model to them,” Roberts said.

“For me, when I was younger, I used to see

my uncle Amos go to schools and I used to see NRL players come to my school as well. It made me want to be more like them by eating healthy and staying out of trouble."

On a regular basis, the Panthers club often have Indigenous school kids and country groups visit Penrith Stadium to watch the side train and tour the facilities.

29-year-old Tighe said he gets a huge buzz helping out with various Aboriginal projects, so much so that he's currently studying to be a youth worker after footy.

“The kids get a buzz and so do we. This is probably some of the stuff I'd like to get into after footy,” he said.

“I've just started a course in youth work and I think James is going to do it as well.

“I want to work with youths and especially Aboriginal kids to give something back. I know any kids at that age appreciate it but for me I get a buzz about helping the Aboriginal kids.”

The pair both credited Panthers Aboriginal Project Offi cer, Glen Liddiard, for being the driving force in the club's commitment to helping the Indigenous.

“He often gets myself and Brad and a couple of Koori boys to talk to them which is good for them,” Roberts said, praising the role of Liddiard at the club.

WE’VE SEEN THE WORST of him, and the best of him, but this weekend Luke Walsh clocks up his 100th

fi rst grade game for Penrith and does it at a time when he’s in career best form. Walsh is departing for England at the end of the season, and plenty of people are now raising their eyebrows about that, but it must be said that the form on display now was nowhere to be seen in 2011 and 2012. He’s the unoffi cial fastest man in rugby league and James Roberts is happy to wear the title. “It’s in my genes I think,” Roberts told Extra Time’s Nathan Taylor last week when asked about his speed. “My dad was fast, my uncle (Amos Roberts) is fast, but I’m faster.”

Monday was one of those days that coach Ivan Cleary just wishes he didn’t get out of bed. He received three lots of bad news in the shape of injuries to Brad Tighe, Matt Robinson and Nigel Plum. All will be out for extended periods – a huge blow for the side heading into the business end of the season. Tighe and Plum would most likely be back for the fi nals but Robinson’s injury is similar to that of Sam McKendry, so he’s gone for

the year. He was due to have scans in the latter part of this week to determine the full extent of the neck problem.

Spotted: After their tough eff ort on the fi eld on Saturday evening, a bunch of Panthers players had a well deserved feed at Outback Steakhouse.

I am hearing rumours that Phil Gould will soon appear on ‘Celebrity MasterChef’ where his fi rst mission will be to bake a humble pie for Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfi eld. Rothfi eld has been relentless in bagging the Panthers all year, particularly over their decision to dump several key players from their roster including Luke Lewis and Michael Gordon. ‘Buzz’ must be worried now that Penrith is only two points adrift of his beloved Sharks, who raided the playing ranks of the Tigers and Panthers to give themselves a shot at a premiership title that has proven so elusive for almost fi ve decades. In his column on Monday, Rothfi eld started to relent, saying, “At the Panthers, it’s hard to be critical of anything they are doing this year”. He couldn’t help himself, however, and went on to criticise the decision to allow Luke Walsh to go to England. This is the same bloke who back in April wrote, “No disrespect but would you take your family to the footy and spend a couple of hundred dollars to watch Luke Walsh...”

IT IS THE BURNING issue every single season, but the time has come for rugby league to mature, grow up and fi x the awful scheduling problem with

Origin and the impact it has on club footy.There is no easy solution ,of course, but you simply

can’t have a depleted Melbourne being thrashed 39-0 by the Bulldogs, or the Cowboys running around without Johnathan Thurston with their season on the line. The Roosters have shelled out big cash to buy Michael Jennings (pictured), but lose him for up to three games a season.

The current Origin set-up, in which players selected for the Blues or Maroons cannot play for their club the weekend prior, is a shambles and punishes clubs for developing and maintaining the game’s best players.

One argument against any changes is of course the problem it creates with the TV deal, particularly with Fox Sports who would be left without any NRL football if we were to pause the competition during the Origin period. Another is that stopping the NRL for three weeks is robbing fans of footy at the key

time of the seasonFor me, the solution is relatively simple.Scrap the weekend off in April where we stop the

competition for a week to play the worthless City/Country and the ANZAC Test.

Play the ANZAC Test on the Thursday night, and allow the normal weekend of footy to continue. It makes no sense to stop the competition just when it’s clicking into gear after six or even weeks.

Move the weekend off to before Origin II – and play the Under 20s Origin on that weekend, giving Fox Sports something to show on the Saturday.

Give eight clubs the bye before Origin I, and the other eight clubs the bye before Origin III.

This ensures that every club is only without their key players once during the entire Origin period.

And fi nally, remove the second bye from the competition, giving Fox Sports more games to show overall during the season.

To ensure an even home and away competition, have a dedicated ‘regional round’ where matches are played in Perth, Darwin, Mackay etc.

Multi Channel (TFSMCN) Network. Broadcasting a range of identities from NRL superstars to Australian and international icons, TFSMCN has proven to be the surprise packet of 2013. Can’t keep up with the chaos? The Footy Show Insider is here to fi ll you in on the story of TFSMCN.

In the beginning, dual international and NRL Superstar Sonny Bill Williams had his own television network bought for him by Channel Nine – SBWTV.

At any given time SBW could blatantly interrupt ‘The Footy Show’ to spread his fascinating opinions to the world.

Upon SBW’s return to the NRL in Round 1, he was steamrolled by Rabbitohs enforcer Sam Burgess. Although being the better man on the

night, Burgess was jealous of SBWTV. Russel Crowe came to the rescue, buying Sam his own television network – SBTV. The new acquisition brought on a power struggle between two NRL heavyweights. Before too long, a third party was about to enter the equation.

Feeling left out and deprived of his own channel, Benji Marshall found backing from an anonymous Bollywood Billionaire (who was rumoured to be Mahatma Cote) and BTV was born.

However the story wasn’t so glamorous for the champion Tigers playmaker as he soon ran out of things to say. To his delight, BTV was bought out in a multi-million dollar takeover deal by ‘The Voice’ coach and Latin singing sensation Ricky Martin. RMTV made several broadcasts on ‘The Footy Show’ however was laughed at by a cackling Cowboy. JTTV laughed his way

onto TFSMCN and continues to interject every Thursday night.

State of Origin Game 1 was not only responsible for a rule change in the NRL but a game changer for TFSMCN. Paul Gallen’s controversial combination on Queensland’s Nate Myles brought to light the anger inside the Blues hard-man. This anger is channelled through PGTV as the G-Train steams onto television sets around the world, naming new rivals every week.

Following Billy Slater’s “accidental” elbow during the second State of Origin, Paul Gallen publicly challenged the QLD fullback. It was only fair that Billy was given his own channel to plead his case and BSTV is just that.

And so the story continues, who will be the newest face of The Footy Show’s Multi Channel Network? You will have to watch to fi nd out.
