PENR ITH PANTHERS VS WESTS T IGERS

KICKOFF: SUNDAY 3.00PM | REFEREES: MATT CECCHIN & LUKE PHILLIPS | VIDEO REFEREES: JASON ROBINSON & SEAN HAMPSTEAD | TV: CHANNEL NINE 4.00PM | RADIO: TRIPLE M 3.00PM

THE CONTRASTING REALITIES OF Penrith’s past and present were on show in the fi rst round of the National

Rugby League competition. In the past was 2007-2011 coach Matthew

Elliott, who watched his New Zealand Warriors get thumped 40-10 by last year’s wooden spooners Parramatta, and quickly off ered many of the same excuses that we’d become used to hearing during his time at the foot of the Mountains.

In the present, a new-look Panthers side

whacked Canberra 32-10 at Penrith Stadium and provided a glimmer of hope that the Ivan Cleary reign at Penrith has some light at the end of the tunnel.

The win over Canberra was highlighted by performances by some of the Panthers’ new recruits, particularly James Segeyaro and Sika Manu. When Segeyaro came onto the park 20 minutes into the fi rst half, it provided a spark that the side not only needed on Sunday, but one that had been missing for

several seasons. As for Manu, he has added some fi repower to the second row that Penrith simply didn’t have last year, and if he remains fi t, he will be a powerhouse for the team this season.

After the game, Cleary rightly summed it up as a “mature” performance. It was far from perfect, round one performances rarely are, and at times it was awfully scratchy, but the side showed that with a few more cobwebs out of the way, the talent exists to make a mark this season.

TIGERS WOUNDEDPenrith face the tough task of taking on the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium this Sunday and don’t think for one minute that their thumping at the hands of Newcastle on Monday night is good news for the Panthers.

Playing on their home turf for the fi rst time this season, we all know that the Tigers shine on Sunday afternoons; and after suff ering such a heavy defeat to the Knights, they now have a point to prove, both to the fans and

to themselves given the changes they have been through in the pre-season.

The big diff erence between taking on Canberra last weekend and the Tigers this Sunday is that unlike the Raiders, the Tigers won’t let you get away with silly mistakes. They won’t let you have a settling in period, and they certainly won’t give up just because the scoreboard suggests they should.

The Panthers will certainly need to improve their last tackle options if they are to beat the Tigers on Sunday, and a few bombs

to the wings wouldn’t go astray based on what we saw of the Tigers on Monday night.

Against Canberra, Penrith seemed uncertain on the last play of a set, often throwing away opportunities to put Canberra out of the game much earlier than they did. Luke Walsh must fi nd the in-goal area throughout the game, and force the Tigers to work hard to bring the ball back. Walsh or Lachlan Coote need to take control of the last play, because if they don’t, the

Tigers are the type of side who will make them pay with a 90 metre runaway try.

COOTE’S TOUGHEST CHALLENGENew fi ve-eighth Lachlan Coote faces a huge challenge on Sunday against the freakishly talented Benji Marshall. Coote is still struggling to fi nd his feet in the number six jumper and at times looked out of his depth against the Raiders and in the pre-season trials, but he proved at the back end of last season that he has natural ability in the

halves and hence coach Cleary will certainly persist with him there for some time.

THE FINAL WORDThis game is a much tougher proposition for the Panthers than last weekend’s match against Canberra, but if players like Segeyaro and Manu can again have good games, and if some of the little errors in Penrith’s game can be rectifi ed, then there’s no reason we can’t make it two from two.

Beware the wounded TigerPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

0PM

Quick fact: Penrith’s 32-31 win over the Tigers in 2000 remains the fi fth greatest comeback of all time. The Panthers were down 31-8 after 57 minutes.

HE MAY TRAVEL FROM the city each day for training but explosive Panthers winger Josh Mansour hopes he can

call Penrith home for a long time yet after signing a contract extension last week.

The 22-year-old committed to the Panthers until the end of season 2014 but hopes to stay beyond that and carve out a long and fulfi lling career at the club.

“It was good to re-sign with the club, they’re in a building stage and going places,” Mansour told Extra Time.

“I love all the boys here, the coaching staff are great, I’m very confi dent here and I couldn’t be happier.”

It’s understood Mansour’s services were being sought after by a number of NRL clubs as well as Japanese rugby, who were willing to pay major Yen for the Penrith prodigy.

However, the former Rabbitoh denied being approached by the Japanese, saying Penrith was the only option he was ever interested in for the immediate future.

“I wanted to stay with Penrith because they gave me the opportunity to prove myself,” he said.

“It’s always been my dream to make the NRL and I thought I had to repay the favour. I wanted to stay loyal to the club because they’ve been good to me and I would like to be good back to them.”

Mansour said his decision to stick with Penrith was heavily infl uenced by his spirited teammates and experienced coaching staff .

“I’m very confi dent around all the boys here, I’ve got a good bond with them and the chemistry’s great,” he said.

“I also am very confi dent and believe in the coaching staff . I believe that the club is

going places and over the time I’ve been here I can see it changing and it’s getting better every time.”

Mansour’s decision to commit with the Panthers for only one extra season puzzled fans who were hoping Penrith’s 2012 Rookie of the Year would sign a long-term deal.

Mansour, who debuted in round nine last year, said he wanted some more time to prove himself before inking a multi-year contract with the Panthers.

“I thought one year was very good and the club thought that as well,” he said.

“I’ve got more to prove. I only played 14 games last year, so I’d like to have another strong season, stay fi t and healthy.”

And hopefully for Penrith fans the best, from the man nicknamed ‘Sauce’, is yet to come.

Last Sunday against the Raiders, Mansour was physical in defence and ran 173 metres – that was more metres gained than any other player for both sides that day.

He said his goal is to continue to make Penrith’s starting squad each week and hopefully, one day, represent his state.

“I’m not jumping the gun just yet but my dream is to make NSW Origin or City Origin, so whatever comes along I’ll take it with open arms,” Mansour said.

“I’m just going to have a strong season and do my best every game.”

For Mansour, after such a strong 2012 season, 2013 was always going to be about proving a point, and avoiding the dreaded second year syndrome.

Based on his opening performance, his second year will only be better than what he gave us in his debut season.

PR IDDO ’S PO INT W ITH LUKE PR IDD IS

WELL WHAT A START to the season and nobody can deny that the off -fi eld situation at the Sharks

has dominated talk in the media, in lounge rooms and in pubs across the country.

What that bunch of men have been through this past week will be something they can build their season on as they are not going to face much tougher situations.

Playing on emotion only lasts so long so they need to focus on the processes now to carry them forward.

Paul Gallen (pictured) will be a key in ensuring the focus stays strong.

However I can’t see the club surviving in its current state. Loyalty is a big thing for players and I can tell you fi rst hand that the

belief the Sharks’ Board has hung the players and coaching staff out to dry to save their own skin will not be forgotten and will make for an unworkable environment over the long term unless changes are made.

There will also be the uncertainty in the players’ minds as the competitor in each of them questions whether the player next to them has earned their spot through hard work or other means.

Again I emphasise there have been no charges or specifi c accusations laid against any specifi c players. It is looking like a trial by Chinese whispers hoping the public scrutiny and pressure will force someone to throw themselves to the wolves. The question is has someone already done so?

On the fi eld, the $BW hype was quickly fl attened thanks to a Sam Burgess shoulder and the Bunnies but expect him to get better as the season goes on.

The Bulldogs looked all at sea without Barba and a few key forwards while the Cowboys looked good but owe their win to young centre Kane ‘the javelin’ Linnett whose defence on big T-Rex was simply outstanding to see.

Brisbane showed they are still looking for that Lockyer leadership replacement while Manly showed the grit of a top side and should be in the mix come the serious end of the season.

Chris Sandow kicked off on a great note looking like a representative half.

2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

SOME PLAYERS HAVE DONE it and succeeded, while some tried it and failed. Making that transition from

fullback to fi ve-eighth isn’t an easy task. One day you go from worrying about

being safe under the high ball to becoming a leader of your team, directing the plays and putting teammates through holes.

Former Australian and Queensland fi ve-eighth Darren Lockyer was one that made

the switch successfully, while Parramatta Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne never could quite get the hang of it despite his talent.

“I don’t know if it’s going to work for me yet but hopefully it does and I can fi ll that position well and play there for many years to come,” Panthers fi ve-eighth Lachlan Coote told Extra Time.

“Hopefully I can make that transition like Darren Lockyer did and slot in there really

well. He was an Australian and Queensland fi ve-eighth, so it would be good to be like him, but if anything I’m going to take it as it comes and try work on my game at six and hopefully accomplish it.”

The 22-year-old played six games at fi ve-eighth for the Panthers at the back-end of the 2012 season, and enjoyed his fi rst full off -season learning the role from his halves teammate, Luke Walsh, and newly appointed halves coach, Trent Barrett.

“Baz (Barrett) has been really outstanding for us, we’ve never had a halves coach out here before,” Coote said.

“Baz is a real smart dude and knows what

he’s talking about. It’s pretty exciting and I learnt a lot from him.”

Coote said the former international and NSW Origin fi ve-eighth has been boosting his football brain and is helping him become more of a leader on the fi eld.

“Baz has been reminding me of the little things you’ve got to be thinking of like thinking ahead and where you want your players in the next play,” he said.

“It’s just real smart stuff that I haven’t had in my head before and he’s helping me with those little things to get right.”

Coote said he was grateful to coach Ivan Cleary for giving him a shot in the halves.

EXPERIENCED PENRITH PANTHERS WINGER David Simmons has revealed he’ll be playing for a new contract in

2013 as he looks to extend his career. The man commonly known as “Simmo”

said he’d love to play beyond this season but time will tell if that will be a reality.

“I’d love to play (next year) but I’m just taking it as it comes, not getting too far ahead,” he said.

But the 28-year-old will have to be at his absolute best this season if he’s going to cement a weekly spot in Penrith’s hotly contested back line.

With young Holden Cup and Windsor Wolves guns breathing down his neck, Simmons remained unfazed by the competition, saying if you’re the best person for the team, you deserve to be there.

“I’ve got no problems with the young

blokes chasing my spot, I was a kid one day.If you’re good enough to play and if you’re the best player for the team then you get the spot, that’s pretty much it,” he said.

“If that does happen, I’m okay with it but I’ll always give my best.”

Simmons has notched up 153 fi rst grade games throughout his time with both the Cronulla Sharks and the Panthers.

After more than 10 years in the NRL he sees himself as a mentor to some of the up and comers of the game.

“I help the young kids as much as I can. I want to see them do the best they can and have long careers,” he said.

“A lot of them have great talent and there’s a lot of things that you learn over the years playing fi rst grade that you’re not really aware of when you’re a kid.”

But it’s perhaps those very youngsters Simmons is nurturing that could stand in his way of getting a new deal with the club.

Simmons admitted every training session was competitive as players look to constantly impress coaching staff .

“If you’re not training ready to play you’re not going to play very well,” he said.

“Our sessions are always very competitive, the young boys go real hard and even the older guys don’t give them an inch.”

HE MAY NOT BE A HOUSEHOLD NAME, BUT DAVID SIMMONS HAS PLAYED MORE THAN 150 FIRST GRADE GAMES AND HAS NOW FOUND A NEW ROLE AS A MENTOR TO PENRITH’S NEXT BATCH OF STARS...

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, KISS has left the building. After hours of clean-up and security pestering

away hundreds of would be groupies we were fi nally ready to get episode two rolling. Following a blistering premiere that brought in record-breaking ratings some would think ‘The Footy Show‘ was heading down the path of second episode syndrome… How wrong they were.

Week two continued to break news on the controversy surrounding the Cronulla Sharks with a hard-hitting 5 In the Bin, featuring the ever-provocative Ray Hadley (pictured left). Do you remember the inner monologues of Sonny Bill Williams that Channel Nine brought to you during Thursday Footy? Well, Beau Ryan joined the panel to take you into the inner workings of ‘Footy

Show’ favourites Benji Marshall and Sam Burgess. ‘The Footy Show’ – home of rugby league innovation.

Gorden Tallis pulled up a chair on the front line as we wrapped some scintillating form over the weekend (go those Panthers), and scolded some of the NRL’s lowlights.

We continued to Probe the stars of the game, this week asking which body part they would change – there seems to be plenty of underwhelming calf muscles in the NRL!

‘The Footy Show’ kicked off 2013 with a myriad of song parodies; with critics calling the re-makes “better than the originals” (critics may not have commented on the panel’s performances). Week two took you

behind the scenes of these shoots, with Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin displaying some vintage head-wobbling form. Also, The Big Marn reveals how we really got that Thrift Shop suit to fi t.

THE WINDSOR WOLVES WILL be hot favourites to take out this year’s NSW Cup after naming a super-strength

side for this Sunday’s opening match against the Wests Tigers.

No less than 11 NRL players have been named to line-up for the Wolves, who didn’t play in round one due to the bye.

Windsor Wolves team manager, Charlie Vella, said the side has benefi tted greatly from the Panthers being very active in the player market during the off -season.

“We’re very excited about the side and with the depth,” he said.

“It’s all about fi ghting for position, and that’s the sort of atmosphere we are trying to build.”

Rising star Matt Moylan will play fullback with speed machine Travis Robinson and Fijian fl yer Etonia Nabuli on the wings.

“You’ll hear a lot about Etonia this year,” Vella said.

“He scored seven tries in three pre-season

games and is a real athlete. I can see him getting an opportunity in fi rst grade some time during the year.”

Panthers utility Blake Austin and Junior Kangaroo Tom Eisenhuth will play in the centres, while ex-Tigers utility Tom Humble and Super League import Isaac John will man the halves.

“We’re expecting big things from Isaac John at halfback,” Vella said.

“He’s got a good kicking game and good organisational skills.”

The Windsor Wolves take on the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium this Sunday, March 17 from 11am.

Meanwhile, the Penrith Panthers Holden Cup side had a big win against 2012 grand fi nalists Canberra last weekend.

The young Panthers hammered the Raiders 40-16 in front of a small but vocal home crowd at Penrith Stadium.

The Panthers play the Tigers this Sunday afternoon in round two.

LUKE PRIDDIS

HOW GOOD WAS IT to see our man Nigel Plum dive over for a try in the fi nal minutes of last weekend’s game

against the Raiders? The big fella didn’t cross the stripe at all in 2012 but it was his sixth career try. Plum plays his 100th fi rst grade game this year, and whilst his tries-per-season average may not be great, at least he has avoided a nudie run this year. Apparently there’s no truth to the rumour that he may do one anyway.

Anyone notice something missing at Penrith Stadium last weekend? There was no match-day newspaper, despite it being an institution in recent years. Last year’s off ering of a Smart Saver coupon newspaper was woeful but it was better than the invisible publication fans were given against the Raiders. Panther Rumblings is told that there will be a match-day paper up and running for round three.

Despite off ering him one of the biggest contracts in the club’s history, Penrith has missed out on luring Johnathan Thurston away from the Cowboys. The star half re-signed with North Queensland on Monday, just 24 hours after telling ‘The Sunday Footy Show’ that his future was still up in the air. Whilst it would have been a coup to sign Thurston, fans should be happy with the knowledge that we did everything we could

to bring him here. In the end, his partner’s desire to stay in Townsville and the obvious “unfi nished business” with the Cowboys swayed his decision. I’m told that Panthers would have done anything to get him to the golden west, including re-naming Aqua Golf ‘JT Golf’, re-branding the cocktail lounge inside Panthers ‘The JT Lounge’ and even creating the JT Poker Machine!

With Thurston now off the agenda, you can expect Penrith to be linked to a whole host of players as the club has some big money to spend for next season. First cab off the rank was Jarryd Hayne, who was linked to the Panthers by the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday. If that happens, I’ll take off my mask and reveal my true identity! Hayne is about as much chance of coming to Penrith as Luke Walsh is of becoming the next Pope!

The Penrith Panthers hosted the fi rst of a series of Penrith District Junior League Clinics at Penrith Stadium this week. Under 9 and Under 10-year-old registered players from the Glenmore Park, Emu Plains, Penrith Waratahs and Lower Mountains clubs enjoyed a clinic with the players and NRL Development staff on Monday.

We hear that halfback Isaac John has been absolutely blowing offi cials away since joining the Windsor Wolves.

JUN IOR RUGBY LEAGUE W ITH YVONNE PURTELL

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PANTHERS NRL & U20s for their wins in the fi rst round against the Raiders – a great start to the season.

Following this win the NRL squad then made themselves available to our junior league players with the fi rst of six clinics which will be held at Centrebet Stadium.

These clinics will see players from all 22 clubs from our district have the opportunity to participate in an U9 and U10 clinic followed by signing sessions for any registered player from their club.

A great initiative and well received by the players, clubs and their families.

This week we saw over 100 kids from Glenmore Park, Emu Plains, Penrith Waratahs and Lower Mountains participate.

See your club secretary for the details of when your club’s clinic is scheduled.

Our junior representative squads had another win last weekend against Manly at Brookvale Oval. This weekend’s clash will see a local derby with the Western Sydney Academy of Sport team taking on the Penrith Panthers at Centrebet Stadium.

Harold Matthews kicks off at 12.00 noon with the SG Ball kicking off at 1.30pm.

For those who aren’t aware, the Western Sydney Academy of Sport team is a squad of players from both the Penrith and Parramatta districts and to date have had some very good results.

The CUBs program has not concluded and merit squads have been announced in the U12, U13, U14 and U15 age groups.

For those interested, the full lists of merit squad selections are on our website at http://penrith.leaguenet.com.au.

With the sun now shining we should see our junior league clubs able to play some trials this weekend. Good luck to all teams in these games.

Lastly thank you to the Brothers and Emu Plains clubs for playing U6 and U7 exhibition games at Centrebet Stadium on the weekend.

I am sure the kids had a lot of fun on the fi eld before the main game was played!

Also to Brothers JRL who were guests of the Prowl Bay, a great initiative of the Panthers.

See you next week.

YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent
