PENR ITH PANTHERS VS CRONULLA SHARKS

KICKOFF: SUNDAY 2PM @ REMONDIS STADIUM | REFEREES: SHAYNE HAYNE & BRETT SUTTOR | VIDEO REFEREES: PAUL MELLOR & REECE WILLIAMS | TV: FOX 2PM | RADIO: 2GB 2PM

LAST WEEKEND’S LOSS TO Newcastle may indeed come back to haunt the Panthers.

With fi fth spot on the line, the loss not only robbed the side of being within sight of an unlikely top four fi nish, but put them out of the top eight entirely.

The cure, however, may come in the shape of upsetting Cronulla at Remondis Stadium this weekend.

The Sharks have their own problems – belted 40-0 by the Sydney Roosters last

weekend and facing fresh drama with the ASADA investigation.

CLEARY MAKES CHANGESThe Panthers have a changed line-up

compared to the one that battled Newcastle last Sunday.

Forward Mose Masoe has taken the early guilty plea on a high tackle charge and will miss the game, with Jeremy Latimore and Tim Grant to start in the front row.

Grant put in plenty of minutes last weekend while Latimore was impressive off the bench and with game time now behind him, will be ready to fi re on Sunday.

Importantly, Sika Manu makes his long-awaited return in the second row and it couldn’t come at a better time given the Panthers’ injury woes.

Manu was in great form even when the Panthers were struggling in the fi rst two months of the season and his addition is more than welcome.

Adam Docker, who was originally expected to be out for up to a month with a fractured cheekbone, has been named at lock and is expected to play.

Sam Anderson gets his chance on the bench, alongside livewire hooker James Segeyaro, Cameron Ciraldo and Ryan Simpkins.

Coach Ivan Cleary has also opted to go with moving Lewis Brown into the centres, dropping Wes Naiqama who was a late

starter against the Knights last week. Moving Brown to the centres in this match

makes sense, particularly given the lack of speed in Cronulla’s backline – the Panthers will be well served with the toughness of Brown a little wider than you’d usually see him on the fi eld.

HOME ADVANTAGECronulla are tough to beat at home, and

the Panthers haven’t won in the daytime since they thrashed Canberra in the opening

round of the competition, but on the bright side, Penrith have played better away from home this season than many expected – winning tough road trips to Kogarah, Parramatta Stadium and Darwin, where they played the Titans in hot conditions.

THE HALVES BATTLEThere’s very little doubt that this game will

be won in the halves.Todd Carney is one of the best halves in

the game and when he fi res, the Sharks fi re. His was extremely quiet against the Roosters last week but brilliant against Brisbane the week before – and the results of those matches speak for themselves.

Luke Walsh has been in great form this season and like Carney, when he is switched on, the Panthers perform so much better.

The halves battle is one to savour this weekend – and I get the feeling you’ll know in the fi rst 15 minutes just where this match is heading.

THE FINAL WORDI made the call last week that Cronulla

won’t make the top eight. Plenty say Penrith won’t either, and this game could well prove to be the deciding factor in that argument.

To win games and win them convincingly, I believe the Sharks need to have Carney, Wade Graham, Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis on the fi eld at the one time.

That won’t happen this weekend, and I think Penrith may prevail... just.

Manu back at vital timePREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

The Panthers and Sharks have fought out three draws out of the 81 matches they’ve played. It’s the equal most amount of draws the Panthers have had against any club.

FEATURE STORY

PANTHERS FULLBACK MATT MOYLAN isn’t sure if he’ll see out the year in a Panthers jumper but is hopeful salary

cap dramas won’t ruin his season. The 22-year-old ‘Rookie of the Year’

contender has had a dark cloud over his head, called the second-tier salary cap, since he debuted in the NRL against Parramatta in Round 7.

The much publicised drama has taken its

toll on the exciting fullback.“It was tough not knowing what I was

doing, whether I would be up in fi rst grade or down in reserve grade, I just didn’t know,” Moylan said.

“Fortunately that’s been sorted for a couple of weeks now, so it’s been good lately.”

Although Moylan is safe to play in the NRL for the moment, the only concern for his playing future is whether Lachlan Coote will

make a surprise return from a pectoral injury and take his place at fullback.

“I haven’t really thought about what the rest of the season may hold but hopefully I’m still there at the end of the year,” Moylan said.

Despite all the off -fi eld dramas, it’s been somewhat of a remarkable debut season for the St Clair Comets junior, who’s already scored three tries in just 10 fi rst grade games.

Moylan said he’s feeling comfortable each and every week he throws on the number ‘1’ jumper.

“First grade is unreal, it’s good being up here every week playing because it’s

something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said.

“I’m still feeling good, I’ve just got to work on a few things and fi x them up.”

One of those things Moylan is working hard on is catching bombs. During Penrith’s win against the Titans on July 6, Moylan dropped three bombs during the crucial early stages.

“After every training session I get Isaac (John) or Walshy to kick some bombs up,” Moylan said.

“The older boys give me a lot of advice as do the halves who have been playing really good lately.”

FULLBACK SENSATION MATT MOYLAN’S IMMEDIATE FUTURE IS STILL UP IN THE AIR THANKS TO THE NRL’S SALARY CAP SHAMBLES, BUT THE YOUNGSTER ISN’T LETTING IT AFFECT HIM ON THE FIELD...

PR IDDO ’S PO INT W ITH LUKE PR IDD IS

THE PANTHERS’ LOSS TO the Knights was disappointing and now the side fi nds itself out of the top eight.

With a tough run home, starting this week against a desperate Sharks outfi t looking to turn things around after a substandard performance against the Roosters, I just hope that they haven’t let slip what was a great opportunity given the last few months.

One highlight, apart from my lunch at Hanks in Panthers who are proud supporters of the Luke Priddis Foundation, was watching my old skipper Craig Gower playing what I thought was a great game.

In all the years I played, he would be in the top fi ve most competitive players I have ever played with and his try is one that only

players that compete to the very end of every play score.

Whether he goes around again next year or not remains to be seen but utilising Gowie in some way to assist the young halves at Penrith both in fi rst grade and those that are coming through the juniors would not do Penrith’s prospects any harm.

------Those from north of the border are saying

seven was fi ne, eight is great but nine will be divine after the Maroons sealed another series win last Wednesday.

Not to take away from the result but again I do not think Queensland played anywhere near the type of footy they played in game two yet really NSW never looked confi dent

of winning the game even towards the end. I may be a bit old school but I still believe

that to score points you need to have the ball in hand even with little time remaining on the clock.

I felt NSW stopped believing in the ability for the team to win and started to think about the individual big play which when you are looking for it rarely does it come.

While the chip to the winger on the fi rst or a 40/20 attempt on the early tackle may be great when they come off , the reality is they are low percentage plays under those circumstances.

We now have another 12 months of Maroon gloating before our boys get another shot at them.

2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW who this man is, in fact many Panthers staff ers aren’t sure what he does on a daily

basis, but once you fi nd out his role he’ll change your perception on how a rugby league club works forever.

Former Panthers centre turned Indigenous Welfare Offi cer Glen Liddiard doesn’t have the usual 9-5 job, instead his role is so important and crucial to the Panthers club that he’s on-call 24/7.

Liddiard takes on many duties at Panthers including going out to schools to mentor young Indigenous kids, giving tours to country groups who visit Penrith Stadium as well as being a role model and mentor to the 16 Indigenous players who represent the Panthers from Harold Matthews right through to fi rst grade.

“A lot of people here at Panthers don’t realise what I do… they don’t know I take players to doctors appointments, pick them up for training or help them out if they are in some sort of trouble at midnight,” Liddiard told Extra Time.

“It’s a 24/7 job but I love it because it builds a relationship with the players. The boys to me are like family members now.”

Liddiard has been in the role for two years and was recruited by Panthers boss Phil Gould to support the many Indigenous kids who leave their country towns all over Australia to play football at Penrith.

“I said to Gus when I fi rst started that hopefully I can fi nd him the next Johnathan Thurston or Greg Inglis, and he said: ‘Glen, all I want is for you to do is give these boys an education, show them work ethic and if they make the NRL from that then I’m happy’,”

Liddiard recalled.“I said: ‘Mate, that’s the best thing I’ve ever

heard, it’s not all about football, it’s about improving lives’.”

According to Liddiard only one per cent of kids playing football make it and it’s the kids from the country towns that don’t make it who you have to watch out for.

“What’s happened in the past is these kids come down from the bush, nobody’s looking after them and if they haven’t made it they feel ashamed to go back home because before they left they thought they were going to be the next big NRL star,” he said.

“Sometimes if things don’t work out these kids go back home and end up drinking or taking drugs. They think their life is over because they never got to live out their dream.

“Now if we send them back and they haven’t made it at least they’ve got an education or a trade. They fi t back into the community and haven’t been a failure. They’ve made something from the time they’ve had here.”

One of Liddiard’s most promising pupils is Panthers winger James Roberts.

Roberts’ troubled past is now very much well-known and since coming to the Panthers, Liddiard has been the man to see him through it.

“James is one of the lucky ones but the thing is there’s thousands of kids like James out there that just don’t have the support,” Liddiard said.

“When he scored a hat-trick against the Titans not long ago we just couldn’t believe it, it was like a dream come true for me. After hearing his story you want him to do well.”

PANTHER RUMBL INGS W ITH THE MASKED PANTHER

LUKE PRIDDIS

THERE CAN BE NO doubt that the professional way in which Kevin Kingston handled being told he could

look for another club next year helped him land his new one-year deal with the Panthers. What a fi ne example of leadership, and there can be no doubt that having Kingston around next year will be a big help for the side as their re-building eff orts continue. And just to pat myself on the back, just remember that it was The Masked Panther who fi rst told you that offi cials were re-thinking their decision to let Kingston go.

To anyone other than Panthers fans, Craig Gower’s return to Penrith Stadium last Sunday was a great story. Gower played plenty of minutes and scored a crucial try early in the second half in what was his fi rst match at the venue since he walked out on the Panthers in 2007. Gower almost didn’t play in the game though, with his wife Amanda – a former Panthers cheerleader – heavily pregnant. Gower had told the club that he wanted to be at the birth of his second child and wouldn’t have played if he received “that” call.

I can reveal that Panthers forward Clint Newton has signed with another NRL club. Newton, who has taken on a leadership role at the Panthers since joining the club in 2012, has agreed to terms elsewhere but

exactly who with is not known at present and Newton is playing his cards close to his chest. Recently, Newton said he would be willing to stay on at Penrith even if it meant playing in reserve grade.

With Panthers boss Phil Gould very keen to ensure the ‘Panthers’ brand becomes a national icon, it’s no surprise that the club will be outsourcing some of its communications eff orts. I can tell you that Spark Communications is doing some work with the Panthers at the moment, and this week put out the call nationwide in an attempt to get the club and players involved in various things such as lifestyle projects, ambassador roles, events and photo shoots. Whilst it hasn’t been such a problem on the fi eld, losing big name stars like Luke Lewis and Michael Jennings has certainly aff ected the profi le of the club, and even crowds at Penrith Stadium. While outsourcing can sometimes be dangerous, in this case, it’s more than likely a smart decision – at least in the short term.

The Panthers are rightly angry that the referees didn’t penalise Kade Snowden for his knee to the head of Adam Docker during last Sunday’s game. Incredibly, all of the offi cials missed the incident and it was only during the video review that it was picked up and Snowden was charged.

WINDSOR WOLVES COACH GARTH Brennan has given his team a spray after their second straight loss, this

time to the last-placed Canterbury Bulldogs. The Wolves have now slipped to fi fth spot

on the NSW Cup ladder after losing to the Bulldogs last weekend 32-30 at Belmore Sports Ground. Canterbury had only won three games all year going into the clash.

Speaking with Extra Time, Brennan said a poor attitude resulted in his side’s worst loss of the year.

“I just don’t think we turned up with the attitude to work hard,” he said.

“I think we looked at Canterbury seeing them at the bottom of the table and thought we’d just turn up and get the two points.

“But the valuable lesson the players learned on the weekend is it doesn’t matter if you’re playing the team that’s coming last or the team that’s coming fi rst – if you don’t turn up with the right attitude you’re going to get beat.”

The Wolves have copped some criticism of late not against their attack but against their defence, which has seen them leak 403

points in 17 games – the second highest of teams in the top eight.

“That’s attitude and it’s a really bad reserve grade attitude to have,” Brennan said.

“They’re just thinking about doing enough and not really caring about the result but more worrying about hoping to get picked in fi rst grade or hoping to get through uninjured.

“Defence is attitude and that probably sums up where we are at the moment, our attitude isn’t where it’s meant to be.”

A silver lining out of the Bulldogs game for Brennan was Fijian winger Eto Nabuli scoring another hat-trick, making his try tally for the year 18. Nathan Smith and Sam Anderson also performed with heart, which has resulted in Anderson getting a well-earned call up to fi rst grade this weekend.

This Saturday at 6pm the Wolves return to Windsor Sports Complex to meet the fourth-placed Newtown Jets. It’s a vital, must-win game for the Wolves.

“If we don’t bring the right attitude to defend this weekend then we’re going to be in for a long night,” Brennan said.

AFTER A SHOCK LOSS TO THE LAST PLACED BULLDOGS, WINDSOR COACH GARTH BRENNAN HAS CHALLENGED HIS SIDE TO TAKE A BETTER ATTITUDE INTO THIS WEEKEND’S GAME AGAINST NEWTOWN...

JUN IOR RUGBY LEAGUE W ITH YVONNE PURTELL

MANY YEARS AGO THE Penrith Referees Association, with the support of Panthers, started a Development Squad program

where identifi ed talented young men and women worked with senior members of the Association on the educational and physical training aspects of the game. Many referees have gone through this program and identifi ed moving into the higher levels of the game with the NSWRL Representative and State competitions and the NRL.

In 1997 a young man commenced his refereeing in the district and was quickly identifi ed as a talented referee with his inclusion in the Association’s Development Squad.

Fast forward 15 years and we saw the same young man, Grant Atkins make his debut on the line in last Wednesday night’s State of Origin decider having been standby touch judge for Origin I and II.

Grant has offi ciated in 76 NRL matches as a touch judge, fi ve NRL centres and in 2012 refereed the Toyota Cup Grand Final.

Well done Grant on a well deserved appointment.

Another top story… Penrith and Jillaroos player Tarah Westera was a try scorer in their win over New Zealand in the fi nal of the Women’s Rugby League World Cup played in England.

Great eff ort ladies who will be bringing ‘the silverware’ back to Australia.

The school holidays saw a number of games for our Merit Squads with the U13s and U14s playing in the Annual Bulldogs Gala Day, the U15s taking on the NSW U15 Country team and the U13s, 14s, 15s and 17s taking on Wests Tigers.

Just a few weeks out from the fi nals of the junior league and we see some very close competitions, none more so than the fi rst division A Grade competition where we see St Marys on 18 points, Brothers 17 points and Emu Plains 16 points. It is just as close in the younger age groups with the Under 11 Division 4 competition where Doonside is on 17 points, Rooty Hill RSL 16 points and Windsor 15 points.

Good luck to all teams for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Years at Panthers: 2 monthsBest part about your job: I love game days! Being up in the media box watching the match and listening to the commentary from the journalists is always very interesting! Being down on the fi eld after the game and watching the interaction between the players and the fans is always great too, especially after a win.Hobbies outside of work: I’m a dancer and I get to as many classes as I can each week, and I love getting some time in at the gym, especially the BodyPump or BodyAttack classes. Of course, there’s always time for

catch ups with friends and family as well. What team did you support growing up: I grew up supporting the Bulldogs because my dad followed them, but I’m now a fully-fl edged Panthers supporter! It’s hard not to support the players and the coaching staff that you work with every day!Favourite Panthers memory: Watching the smile on one of our younger players faces after he’d just done his fi rst ever media interview. He was so nervous beforehand, but was so proud of himself once he’d fi nished. It made my day to see that happen for him.

WHEN PENRITH CAPTAIN KEVIN Kingston was told he could look elsewhere for next season, he took

the news in his stride. So much so, that the club noted his

unbelievable professionalism in handling the situation and maintaining his leadership of the team.

Now, in an ironic twist, that professionalism and his recent good form has helped Kingston land a new one-year deal at the club.

“It’s a privilege to be staying on at the Panthers. I love the club and the team, and my family and I didn’t really want to be anywhere else next season,” Kingston said.

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

DARRYL BROHMAN IS A legend of ‘The Footy Show’.

His decade long presence has won the hearts of viewers across Australia and indeed the world.

To celebrate his life achievements, we held a very special ‘This Is Your Life’ during our Brisbane show just a few weeks ago.

The Insider caught up with Darryl afterwards, to fi nd his thoughts on the segment and of course his life in Penrith.

“I’m very honoured to have such a reputable man like Fatty Vautin to tell me about my life,” he said.

The Big Marn kept a great sense of humour and humility throughout.

“I’m not sure how much of that was tongue in cheek, or how much was serious but I do feel very proud. Although I don’t remember a lot of the

people they introduced me to.”A veteran of rugby league and two-

game Origin legend for Queensland, Brohman still fi nds Sydney’s west a home away from home.

“I had some great years in Penrith, I made some great friends, not only through football but through work as well,” he said.

Brohman could be spotted throughout the late 1980’s as a teller at the NSW bank and as a caller on local Penrith radio station 2KH, before he launched into media superstardom with ‘The Footy Show’ in 1998.

“Those were some good years after footy back in Penrith, but I hated standing up at the bank all day long,” he said.

Playing 91 games for the Panthers, scoring 12 tries and 7 goals, Brohman holds a special place in his heart for the

chocolate soldiers.“I still do a fair bit for the community

of western Sydney, whether it be for ‘The Footy Show’ or in fact the Western Weekender.”

As for the newest crop of Panthers, The Big Marn certainly feels they are coming good again under the reins of Gus Gould.

“I really do think they’ll do great things, whether it be this year or next, I’m confi dent they can cause a stir.”

The Big Marn makes us laugh every week, so tune in next time to see what he’s got in store.

The home of BIG stars, ‘The Footy Show’ airs on Thursdays at 8.30pm on Channel Nine.

Catch up on anything you’ve missed online at www.footyshow.com.au or follow the show on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NRLFootyShow.
