How quickly a single, solitary month can change things.

Four weeks ago the Panthers were on top of the world after defeating South Sydney 20-6 in front of a huge TV audience and a big crowd at Penrith Stadium.

Penrith and Souths meet again this weekend and the journey of both sides since that Friday night in early July has been vastly different – and not what the result that night suggested.

The Rabbitohs have collected all six available competition points since that match thanks to a bye and convincing wins over the Dragons and Knights.

Penrith meanwhile have lost to the Roosters, Storm and Raiders in the weeks that followed that impressive win.

The Rabbitohs regrouped after that defeat and were able to return to form

soon after and now appear to have their premiership defence back on track. The Panthers somehow fell apart, losing confidence against the Roosters and never regaining it against the Storm or Raiders.

Just how much has changed in the last month will be evident when the two sides meet again on Sunday.

The Panthers actually looked OK in attack last week, scoring four impressive tries including one to Robert Jennings off a slick scrumbase move, but again their defence let them down. The side conceded some soft tries and often couldn’t read Canberra’s enthusiasm in attack – a flaw in young players that is being further exposed by Penrith’s current injury crisis.

Ivan Cleary said post-match that the Panthers “beat themselves” and he isn’t wrong – at times during the game his side looked to be on top of their opposition and in fact had a strong breeze in their favour during the second half that should have carried them to victory.

Soft errors (the Panthers made a total of 15 mistakes) and some poor defence close to the line was enough to ensure the

Raiders kept their season alive while the Panthers pondered what could have been.

For Cleary, this week will surely be about tightening up those two facets of his team’s game – errors and defence. After all, with four line breaks and 19 offloads, the Panthers certainly showed they can still be dangerous in attack even without their most noted playmaker in Matt Moylan.

The Panthers welcome back Josh Mansour this weekend but the good news essentially stops there with Peter Wallace,

Dean Whare and Nigel Plum added to the team’s injury list.

Cleary obviously isn’t going to fix all of Penrith’s problems in seven days and if he had the magic solution, he would have implemented it already.

What he can ask for is a more committed effort – an effort where everyone plays for each other, where communication is strong and where his senior players lift the entire feeling within the team.

It may be becoming evident that Penrith will miss the finals this year, but that does not mean that anyone has the right to put on a jersey steeped in history and tradition and not give 100 per cent. If you turn up on Sunday and you plan on running onto the ANZ Stadium turf in a Panthers jumper, you better be prepared to give it your all – even if your all is not enough at the end of the 80 minutes.

Pride, passion and giving it your best is all that Cleary and Panthers fans can ask for from their team right now.

Let’s get in there and fight.

» The Panthers handed over a cheque for $52,500 to the Nepean Family Room last Sunday. It’s a tremendous donation, but well below the $100,000 fundraising target. The short notice surrounding the initiative was probably one of the key reasons, but the season-low crowd of 8,048 was obviously the primary factor. It was a very poor crowd figure consid-ering even more people turned up on a Monday night to see the Panthers play the Cowboys earlier this year. One of the main reasons for the low crowd was the fact that members were asked to pay for this game in addition to their season ticket cost (members only paid for 10 games, and this match effectively became Penrith’s 11th home game). It was evident that many members simply stayed away, either due to budget concerns or simply to make a stand. Many members I spoke to were angry that so many tickets were given away as part of sponsor donations, yet the club’s most loyal fans were asked to pay. Anyway, $52,500 is still a tremen-dous result and those who contributed should be congratulated – it’s a great cause.

» The Panthers have been dealt more injury blows with Peter Wallace, Dean Whare and Nigel Plum to spend time on the sidelines. Wallace has suffered his third serious knee injury in two years and will miss the rest of the season. In scenes similar to what he did in Bathurst last year, Wallace bravely played on with the ACL injury against Canberra despite suf-fering the problem in the first half. Whare has a broken thumb and is also effectively out for the year, while Plum was knocked out against Canberra and will most likely miss Sunday’s clash against Souths. Penrith’s extraordinary injury toll over the last two years is hard to believe – Ivan Cleary really needs to stop walking under ladders holding a black cat.

» The resignation of Don Feltis and John Hiatt from the Panthers Board this week came as a surprise to many, but in reality it’s been on the cards for some time. In the fastest move since Usain Bolt last won Gold, the Panthers had already removed Mr Feltis and Mr Hiatt from their website and foyer display before the ink on the resignations was even dry.

» Sharks players Andrew and David Fifita have been stood down from the NRL pending further investigations and to

allow them and their representatives to fully address matters relating to allega-tions of inappropriate behaviour at an A Grade Men’s match under the jurisdic-tion of the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League last weekend. Penrith has already banned the pair from attending junior league matches in the area for the next 12 months. Wests Tigers player Matt Lodge has also been banned from junior matches in the local area. What an ugly situation this is.

» In a funny moment last Sunday, retiring forward Brent Kite couldn’t get himself into Penrith Stadium. For some reason, his ticket didn’t work at the gate and he faced an awkward few moments before attendants realised that Kite should prob-ably be granted access.

» There’s plenty of rumours doing the rounds suggesting that Panthers winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is still seriously considering undertaking a Mormon mis-sion perhaps as early as next year. While Watene-Zelezniak has never ruled it out, I’m told it’s unlikely that he’ll be jetting off in 2016.

» Talking of Watene-Zelezniak, there’s speculation that he could be a late inclu-sion in the Penrith team to take on Souths at ANZ Stadium on Sunday. Ivan Cleary didn’t name Watene-Zelezniak on Tues-day but don’t be surprised if he’s named an hour before kick-off on Sunday.

» The Panthers could be set to lose another key man from their coaching ranks, with NSW Cup coach Garth Bren-nan likely to be targeted by Newcastle for next season. The Knights suddenly axed coach Rick Stone on Monday, with Danny Buderus stepping into the role in an in-terim capacity. Brennan is seen as an NRL coach of the future and has extremely close ties with the Newcastle club and the Hunter region itself.

» A few years ago there was talk that the Panthers could axe their cheerlead-ers, but it’s been great to see the club get behind them in the last couple of years. The Panthers have also found better ways to involve them in match day promo-tions, including last weekend when they wore special Soul Origin outfits as part of a game-day promotion.

Panthers five-eighth Jamie Soward says he was devastated to learn that good friend and captain Peter Wallace would miss the remainder of the season with another knee

injury.Speaking with the media on Tuesday

morning, Soward expressed deep concern for his 29-year-old halves partner, who will soon go under the knife for the second time in 12 months to repair another torn ACL.

“What he’s been through the last two years has been unbelievable. Personally it’s even shaken me up a little bit,” Soward admitted.

“Wal’s one of my better mates, he’s my halfback, he’s our captain – it’s the second time he’s done his knee in two years, he’s also had personal problems as well.

“Just to see him struggling really shook me up yesterday but he will come back.”

Wallace injured his right knee during the first half of Penrith’s 34-24 loss to the Canberra Raiders last Sunday afternoon.

In a cruel twist, Wallace’s latest setback comes exactly one year to the day after

he injured the same knee during a game against the Cronulla Sharks in Bathurst.

“I saw him getting checked out at half-time, and he had his head down after the game so I knew something was up, but he didn’t let on,” Soward said.

“It just shows what kind of guy he is, he doesn’t let his problems effect the team and he still lead the team in the second half.

“Pete knew what happened, he knows when that sort of stuff happens and he played on which shows what sort of char-acter he is.”

It’s been a tough year for Wallace since successfully returning from a knee recon-struction in Round 1 this year. Not only did he miss five games earlier in the season due to minor surgery to clean out cartilage in his knee, but he also lost his mother Dianne after a long battle with illness.

Wallace is contracted with the Panthers until the end of next season with Soward having no doubts that his partner in crime will return to the field again.

“He’ll come back, he’ll come back for sure,” Soward affirmed.

“Knowing Wal and how stubborn he is and how much of a competitor he is, he’ll come back from this and will be leading our club next year.”

The Battle of the Big Cats went the way of the Penrith Panthers for the fourth time in succession, with a dominant 34-20 win over an error-riddled Wests Tigers side at Campbelltown Stadium.

The Panthers boosted by the return of Kieran Moss and Sam Anderson from injury, dominated possession to skip out to an 18-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes with tries to Makino Filino, Ben Murdoch-Masila and Moss before the Tigers responded with two late first half tries to trail 18-10 at the break.

But as was the case in the first half, Penrith again dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half, with halves Isaac John and Sam Scarlett instrumental.

Unanswered tries to Eddie Aiono, Scar-lett and Filino (his second for the game) allowed Penrith to pull away to a com-manding 34-10 lead before two late Tigers tries, on the back of some ill-discipline in defence by the Panthers, added some respectability to the final score.

Penrith’s win ended a three game losing streak and sees the defending premiers in a four-way tie for first place with Mount-ies, New Zealand Warriors and Wyong on 28 competition points, but remain in third on for and against.

This Saturday Penrith travel to Wollon-

gong to face the only side they have yet to play in 2015, the Illawarra Cutters, who will be equally desperate to cling onto their spot in the top eight.

The Cutters are coming off a heavy 44-32 loss to the North Sydney Bears and are only in the top eight ahead of North Sydney on for and against. Illawarra can ill-afford a loss on home soil against a side that has won the last three encounters between the two.

Some familiar faces will line-up against the Panthers including the flying Fijian, Eto Nabuli, who scored 49 tries in his time with the Panthers, while Junior Vai Vai and Shannon Wakeman, who also spent time with the Panthers, will be keen to get a win against their former club.

The Cutters will also field the likes of experienced first graders Nathan Green, Heath L’Estrange and Russell Packer and will be a tough challenge for a Penrith side that will be looking to maintain their chase for the minor premiership with just five rounds remaining.

In team news, Isaac John has been called up to first grade, replaced in the halves by Adrian Davis while Rodney Coates returns from injury via the bench which sees Chris Smith named as 18th man.

PANTHERS LOOK TO CUT DOWN ILLAWARRA AFTER CLAWING A WIN OVER TIGERS

The Penrith Panthers have stamped their authority on the Holden Cup com-petition with a crushing 64-8 win over the Canberra Raiders.

Coming into last Sunday’s clash at Pepper Stadium, many fans thought a match-up between first versus fourth would be a lot closer, but the Panthers had other ideas, racing in 11 tries to two in an absolute avalanche.

After PNG prop Stanton Albert opened the scoring in the third minute, the Panthers continued to pile on the points in the first half, scoring six unanswered tries to lead 34-0.

Nathan Cleary, Jerome Luai, Fuimanu Enese, Kaide Ellis and Soni Luke all crossed for the Panthers in the opening half, with young Cleary converting all but one of Penrith’s first half tries.

When teams hit the field for the second half, it was the Raiders who scored first with winger Thomas Cronan producing some great acrobatic skills to score in the corner.

However, before the Raiders could get on any sort of roll, the Panthers hit straight back with a try of their own through powerhouse prop Moses Leota.

Leading 40-4, Penrith continued to keep the score attendant busy with

Corey Harawira crossing in the 58th minute followed by Jack Nelson in the 61st.

Not done with just yet, the Raiders managed pick up their second try of the afternoon 12 minutes before full-time.

Two more Panthers tries before the fi-nal siren to Enese and Paea Pua saw the home side record their biggest victory of the season, to maintain their position atop the Holden Cup ladder.

This Sunday afternoon the Panthers will travel to ANZ Stadium to take on the second last-placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at 1.45pm.

So here we are, the sprint home to the NRL finals is on and all fans want to know is: will my team make it?

This week I thought I’d gaze into the crystal ball and see if it would reveal just who will be there and who will not.

Let’s start with the easy stuff and that is who will definitely be there and that is the current top four, Brisbane, North Queensland, the Roosters and Souths.

They say 28 points is a useful cut off point for a top eight finish, so with that in mind, fifth-placed Melbourne, currently on 24 points, should win at least two of their final six games and get there.

Cronulla are on the same points, but not as convincing in their footy, and they have some tough games coming up, but they do have Parramatta and the Tigers, so let’s assume they’ll manage at least two wins and make it.

So that’s our final six. Let’s go to the other end of the table

and see who is no chance, that being the Tigers, Titans and Newcastle all GONE!

Parramatta, Penrith and Manly are all

on 18 points and need at least five wins from six. Only Manly could seriously be considered a chance of pulling off that minor miracle but, regardless, I’ll write them off.

That leaves us with the Dragons, Canberra, Warriors and the Bulldogs to fight out the final two places in my top eight prediction race.

I personally think the Warriors will be all at sea without the brilliant Shaun Johnson, so GONE!

Canterbury are big stage performers and they’ll fight like their namesakes and make it.

So the Dragons or Canberra for that final spot?

Right now you’d say Canberra, but that early season Dragons form must be somewhere and their run home is argu-ably the easiest, so maybe that famous Red V has one last surge left in it yet to grab a spot, but I’ll write them off.

The crystal ball then seems to say Broncos, Cowboys, Roosters, Rabbitohs, Storm, Sharks, Bulldogs and Raiders.
