Evaluation question 3 WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Page 2: Evaluation question 3aab

Possible Institutions

A media institutions is a company or organisation that disperses a media product for audience consumption and is accountable for a media text. A film would go to cinemas either nationally or internationally and after being in cinema for a few months it would then be dispersed into shops.

Media Institutions that I think could potentially distribute our media product are cinemas such as Odeon, vue, Cineworld and ambassadors.

Film festivals such as BFI, Sundance, Cannes or edinbrough festival. Our media product is an opening sequence to a film in the thriller genre. Popular institutions include the bbc, the uk film council, vertigo films and films four. Possible institutions might be film studios, television like the bbc, the web like YouTube or

dvd.

Films shown at the Odeon

From looking at the screenshots of the cinema listings at the Odeon, I can see that the most common genre of films showing right now is comedy like snoopy and Charlie brown, Maya the bee, minions and daddy's home. This is different from my genre as mine is thriller.

This is at Guildford cinema which tells me that the audiences in this area possibly most enjoy comedy. This is same as other cinemas such as the vue cinema in Camberley. They are showing majority of the same films as the Odeon cinema in Guildford and the same comedies. I would say that the Odeon and the Vue cinema have very similar audiences to each other.

The Odeon have roughly about 8 screens and the vue have roughly 8 screens too so they have very similar audiences.

Independent cinemas

Films shown at BFI independent cinema

From looking at the screenshots of the films that are listed of showing at BFI independent cinema, I can see that they are more likely to show films that are not shown internationally and they show very different films which would not be shown in cinemas like the Vue or the Odeon.

The only films that they show which are well known and are shown in other cinemas are there IMAX films such as spectre and star wars.

There films are low budget and are not advertised like other movies in cinemas like the Odeon are.

Films shown at Sundance

By looking at the films shown at Sundance film festival I can see that they show films that are not very well known and that wouldn’t be shown to audiences at the Odeon.

This shows that Sundance have a completely different audience then cinemas and their audience expect a lot different.

There films are low budget and aren’t advertised. Like films shown at the Odeon cinema are advertised on television, posters, bus stops months before they are shown in cinemas, films shown at Sundance film festival are not.

Where could our media product be shown?

Independent cinema vs. Odeon? Odeon cinemas are more likely show films which are in the comedy genre or films for children.

Also they show films which are distributed worldwide. Whereas, independent cinemas are more likely to show films of a higher certificate ratings and films which are not shown worldwide which wouldn’t be shown in local cinemas.

From this, I think that are thriller genre opening sequence would be more likely to be shown in the independent cinema. I think this because the Odeon cinema is less likely to show it as its obviously not a worldwide film and they show less thriller films. Also, I think this because independent cinemas mainly show thrillers that aren’t top budget films and films that not a lot of people had heard of.

In terms of television, I think that our media product would not be shown on somewhere like sky movies, as they only show the most popular of thriller movies. But I do think that our film could be shown on a smaller movie channel.

In terms of on the internet, I think that our media product could be shown on YouTube because there are a lot of films that are shown on YouTube. Also, YouTube mainly shows films which are not shown at bug cinemas or which are shown at a lot of places and seeming as I think that our media product wouldn’t be shown by big places like the Odeon or the vue or the bbc or sky movies etc., I think it would be shown well on YouTube.
