ESS gives special thanks to all their Biolage salon deal customers

Page 5: Essential Salons

2010 has presented a number of challenges for Irish consumers and retailers alike. To address these challenges we at Essential Salon Supplies (ESS) have sought out innovative, state of the art new products and services to stimulate

and excite the market place, such as:

Keratin Complex: This smoothing system (12 week blow dry) has taken the hairdressing industry by storm, driving clients to the salon in search of this fabulous product and service. It also helps to ensure repeat business for the salon through the great range of homecare products available. Cloud 9: Ceramic Irons reach a new level of sophistication with these amazing stylers from the founding member of GHD. They reflect the superiority in craftsmanship and technology over the original in every area of performance and desirability.

Salon Ambience and Medical & Beauty: ESS has a strong relationship with these market leaders of high-quality Italian furniture, and is proud to have exclusive rights for the whole of Ireland. Once again, this year offers new products and styles from them, which of course we look forward to seeing in Irish salons in the future! The success of ESS has been through a simple principle which many companies overlook. Listen to what people want, give them more than they expect, and do it with passion. As we are so closely aligned to the fashion industry we continually stimulate and excite hairdressers and clients alike - earlier this year we staged a fantastic show at the highly acclaimed 5 star Savoy Hotel in Limerick with guest speakers from the world of hairdressing and business consultancy.

Because of this proactive, positive approach to these challenges, I’ve recently had to expand our already experienced , professional ESS sales and support team to match the growth of the business, and with the launch of our website www.essentialsalon.ie we are soon to become a truly global brand!

Amongst other great articles, this new edition of the Essential Salons magazine offers eight different locations created by Essential Salon Supplies and Salon Ambience, showing you a glimpse of what we have already achieved, such as the Exposé salon shown on the front cover of the magazine, as well as a large variety of different types of salons. I sincerely hope you enjoy the magazine, and that it provides you with some food for thought regarding this always interesting marketplace in which we work!

Having worked as a sales rep for many years, Miriam Barry already had a large amount of experience with hairdressers and hairdressing salons before

deciding to open her own salon. And with a name such as Elegance, it is easy to picture the direction that she wanted to take her salon in!

‘I knew straight away that I wanted something elegant, but still different,’ explains Miriam, ‘and I have to say that meeting with Alan Gleeson made the decision to work with Essential Salon Supplies very easy for me.’

Having originally seen an advert for Salon Ambience furniture in Creative HEAD Ireland, Miriam drove to Limerick to see the brand new Essential Salon Supplies cash & carry and showroom, which, as Miriam readily agreed, is ‘very impressive’. While there she spoke to Alan Gleeson, managing director of Essential Salon Supplies, who helped her find the most suitable furniture for her salon. ‘While in the showroom, I saw the Eclisse mirror with a lovely coloured panel behind it, and that really stood out for me,’ says Miriam. The Eclisse mirror stood out thanks to its graceful design; a full-length, backlit mirror with a stylish design etched out of the mirror itself, creating extra visibility to the illuminated panel behind it, while also creating a more unique styling unit in its own right.

Having chosen the mirrors, it was important to choose the colours that would continue the theme of elegance throughout the salon. ‘I think the two colours I chose are very different, and quite unique,’ continues Miriam. The Salon Ambience ‘Copper’ material behind the styling units, with not only an original yet classy colour, but also a stylish texture, helps the mirror stand out from its surroundings, and is found again on the Kubik styling chairs, combined in this instance with ‘Steel’, utilising the same material, but with a different colour that works perfectly with the stronger, more impactful Copper.

This colour scheme continues throughout the salon, helping to accentuate, yet not overpower, the stylish salon that Miriam has created. The same colour combination is

found in the modern, playful waiting area, where the rounded Alpha and Beta waiting chairs make a nice contrast to the minimalist style of the Kubik styling chairs. The Cayman reception desk also displays the same colours, with the curved, chromed steel front containing splashes of colour, while even the sign of the salon above the desk uses the same Copper material found on the furniture! ‘I wanted colours that wouldn’t age,’ says Miriam, ‘but something that was still fun and modern.’

The final addition to this colour scheme is found in the shampoo area, where the Shiatsuwash shampoo units again use the Copper colour, while also adding to the salon’s class thanks to the integrated massage system found inside the chair itself. Miriam agrees, adding, ‘the washunits are extremely comfortable, and ever so relaxing!’

With all the various pieces of her salon coming together nicely, including an advanced computer system that allows her to easily keep track of stock, Miriam was more than happy to listen to Salon Ambience’s skilled design team when deciding how to lay out her salon. ‘The whole planning process helped me,’ continues Miriam, ‘and I think the whole thing came together extremely well.’ It’s easy to understand her enthusiasm, as this salon certainly lives up to its name!

There is no time to stop learning. ESS Academy was resurrected out of a passion to teach hairdressers to be the best at what they do. We believe it is your right to learn from the best at an affordable price. Teaching is not just a profession at The Academy – it is an art form and a love affair. For 2010 we have assembled an outstanding team of industry-applauded educators to work

alongside you. Together, our goal is to ensure that you feel uniquely transformed after visiting The Academy.

The ESS Academy has a lecture theatre for theory-related classes and a separate training room for the practical hands on sessions to take place. Celebrity hairdressers to the stars have walked the halls of this brand new academy (Kieran O’Gorman, Errol Douglas, Lee Stafford and Hooker & Young to name but a few), all agreeing that the facilities here are second to none, bearing no comparison to any other academy they have worked in, in either Ireland or the UK!

Essential Salon Supplies’ (ESS) philosophy is to provide students with the latest trends so that they can bring this creativity back to the salon with them. ESS works with experienced stylists that have years of training and credibility in the business.

As you can see from the range and calibre of courses brought to the Academy, ESS strives to deliver cutting edge courses to its students. Courses to suit all levels of experience are on offer and all are relevant to the day to day needs of your business.

From colour, cutting and styling to salon management and special events, ESS has listened to customers over the past ten years. Low student teacher ratios mean that students receive the highest standard of attention and care. Don’t forget to enquire about special reductions when there are a number of students from the same salon.

ESS work with a highly qualified and experienced panel of experts. The training abilities of all course directors has been measured. Each director is constantly bringing new ideas to the table which means students will benefit directly from this.

ESS offer salon business courses throughout the year which cater to maximise the efficiency of salons, and research has shown that owners who have taken our courses have gained up to 30% extra in profits. That’s a great incentive!

As a client, you will be blown away by the constant flow of inspirational days available with some of the masters of the craft ready to impart their knowledge to you. By using these world-acclaimed artist’s, 2010 at The Academy is guaranteed to have you buzzing.

The outstanding talents of Errol Douglas and Lee Stafford (to name just a couple of industry legends) will grace the halls of the academy throughout the year. From the latest Catwalk Trends to Haircare and Retailing, ESS has it all covered under one roof. Our brochure, available on request, has been designed to give an insight into exactly what is on offer, from the foundation all the way up to expert. There is nothing more important to us than value for money and customer satisfaction, and as such all our courses come with customer feedback sheets, helping us fine tune our selection for this year. Multi-award winning creative stylists Gary Hooker & Michael Young were at the Strand hotel, Limerick on Monday, March 23rd as part of Matrix Live, an exclusive hair show brought to Limerick by Essential Salon Supplies.

Former British Colourists of the Year, Gary Hooker & Michael Young have made their mark as experts in the field of colour, creating beautiful, wearable hair for everyone. Constantly featured in magazines across the UK & Ireland, their signature look and reputation as creators of beautiful hair has ensured they are a firm favourite with Matrix customers across the globe.

Over 150 hair stylists from all over Ireland attended the high-profile hair event to see the London-based duo recreate their signature looks, giving them an added twist, and incorporating the very latest colour and cutting techniques.

8 real life models took part in the live stage show and Hooker & Young did not disappoint. All colour ranges under the Matrix brand were showcased including Prizm’s true semi colour and Colour Graphics highlighting system. Karen Reidy, regional education director with ESS, was on hand to cover any questions the curious crowd needed answering, plus guests had the opportunity to get feedback from two of the living greats, with secrets alluding to the contents of Gary Hooker’s first pay packet!

Commenting on the great response to the live show, ESS kept the ticket price low so it was very affordable, giving salons who want to learn from the best the chance to do so. The response was unimaginable, and demand has been so high that future events look very promising. Check our Education schedule for dates.

As one of Ireland’s leading salon groups, it was vital that, when David Martin was looking to furnish his

new salon in Galway, it was created using top-quality furniture from a professional, reliable company. Step forward Essential Salon Supplies who, together with Salon Ambience, offered exactly what the David Martin Hairdressing Group were looking for!

The minimal style is evident before even entering the salon. Large floor to ceiling windows all along the front wall allow an unrestricted view into the salon, where the illumination seen both in the ceiling and on the work units really impress, even from a distance. Upon entering the salon this opinion certainly doesn’t change - the large Millennium reception desk, with a dark wengè wood frame and white plexiglass front panel, is built to make an impact. Behind the desk, an illuminated, elegant, product display area brings added attention to the reception area.

Moving into the work area itself, the undeniable quality seen in the reception area is continued. The bright, illuminated Platinum styling unit uses a simple, minimal style to accentuate the sharp lines of the unit, as well as the strong aluminium work shelf. The plexiglass panel surrounding the mirror itself ties together beautifully with the steel frame surrounding it, that in turn links together well with the stainless steel footrest.

The Chloe styling chairs, chosen to contrast with the mirrors, create this effect thanks to the curved nature of the seat. This rounded style is even seen in the circular aluminium base, helping the modern chair stand

Page 26: Essential Salons

out in front of such a strong styling unit. The colours chosen manage to simultaneously tie the mirrors and chairs together, while also adding warmth to a minimalist salon and creating a link to the delicate wooden finishes placed around the salon. These colours are Salon Ambience’s exclusive ‘Steel’ and ‘Copper’, with refined finishes that add to the appearance and quality of the upholstered products.

The Wellness shampoo units utilise the same colours as the styling chairs, but continue the same minimalist theme found in the mirrors. Adding to the modern style of the salon, these washunits also incorporate an advanced massage system into the back of the chair, guaranteeing amazing comfort for the client.

Looking at the salon, and noting how pleased the customers have been with the results, it is easy to see why the David Martin Hairdressing Group picked Essential Salon Supplies out of all the options available!

Quality is the fundamental

imperative that moves every single project.

Every official Salon Ambience component, therefore, must be

a guarantee of a product of high quality, unchanging in time, and for this reason the principle idea

of every project is to create value that lasts.

Research is a key element in the development of a company,

and works towards improving the aesthetic aspects, the ease

of use, and the comfort of a product. This is a complex part of the work process, requiring

interaction with hairdressers who all have different needs, tastes,

aspirations and possibilities.

Professionalism is a characteristic that distinguishes a company from the rest of the pack. As such, the managerial

organisation is constructed of a team of young, dynamic,

highly motivated professionals, who make the most of a group

of authorised wholesalers, characterised by competence

and reliability.

Made In Italy is our mark of quality. All components and

materials used are rigorously made in Italy. From the cut of the upholstery to the stitching, from

the choice of finish to the final packing, the desire for global quality is seen in every detail.

A complete and reliable service is the best guarantee for those

who turn to Salon Ambience, and this means: a personalised

salon design service, free estimates, precise delivery times,

and a complete and exclusive assistance in all phases of the

realisation of the beauty centre, thanks to the vast experience gained throughout the years.

31ESSENTIALSALONS

On Sunday, May 16th 2010, over 110 guests arrived at the luxurious 5 star Savoy Hotel in Limerick to attend the sixth annual ESS luxury Biolage spa event. ESS wanted to show their appreciation and thank all their customers for all the hard work and dedication to the brand in 2009/2010 and what better way to do it but in true ESS style.

After the initial welcome, guests were treated to a fun and interactive session with business guru and Matrix guest artist Christian Hefti, showing everyone how important it is for hairdressers to develop a head for numbers as well as an eye for style. Showcasing his considerable creativity Christian also explained the benefits brilliant retailing can bring to a salon and how to motivate teams to achieve incredible sales success.

If Christian’s expertise wasn’t enough, ESS also brought along 2008 Men’s Hairdresser Of The Year, and 2010 Celebrity Hairdresser Of The Year nominee Jamie Stevens to demonstrate some of the work that has propelled him to his role as Matrix guest artist, art director of Errol Douglas and stylist on Gok Wan’s “Gok’s fashion fix “ and “How to look good naked”! Androgynous mixed with contemporary was on the menu for Jamie’s 5 models, completing their real life make overs inspired by Gok’s “fashion fix”.

Such hard work deserves a reward and when in luxurious 5 star surroundings there in only one thing for it. Guests joined the ESS team for a champagne + cosmopolitan reception followed by a five course gala dinner all the while being serenaded by swing singer Mark Tolan. After dinner guests retired to the lizst lounge for the piece de resistance of the night, a live stage show hosted by the life like Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue impersonator.

Once again, a huge success with everybody looking forward to the next event!

Situated on two floors in the centre of Kilkenny, ‘Hair by Nigel & Co.’ has a distinctly different feel from many of today’s new salons.

The boutique style found inside the salon adds to its personality, and comes from the use of colours and textures found on both the walls and the furniture.

Floral wallpaper on a green background is found on both the ground floor and first floor of the salon, and this strong colour and pattern works well with the dark wengè wood panels found on the Barcelona styling unit, giving the area its own unique identity, and also creating an attractive contrast. The thick aluminium work shelves found on the Barcelona add elegance to the work area, while also combining the styling unit with the Quadro chair, thanks to the chairs’ strong, rounded aluminium base. The dark brown colour of the Barcelona is also reproduced on the chair, with the ‘Coffee Brown’ material pairing the two items together well, and therefore working beautifully with the detailed wallpaper behind them.

Downstairs, two classy Shiatsuwash shampoo units, again in the Coffee Brown material, provide maximum comfort to the client, thanks to the relaxing, stylish form of the seat, backrest, and curved, chromed armrests. The dark wengè wood of the styling units is also seen again on the Century reception desk, a fantastic, compact desk that also contains flashes of Salon Ambience’s ‘Lime Green’ texture, recalling the colour found in the wallpaper, and completing the look of the salon.

It is obvious when looking at the ‘boutique’ style of ‘Hair by Nigel & Co.’, that it was important to create a salon that stands out from the crowd. Through the wallpaper, the atmosphere, the colours and the furniture, a youthful mentality was created, while still maintaining the professionalism required in any new business. And even though the salon caters to people from all walks of life, this fresh, fun attitude can only spell success in such a busy, young city!

S T Y L I N GAn integral part of every salon, the styling area is a place of constant activity; it is the area where both employees and customers spend most of their time, and is guaranteed to catch the eye when entering the main section of a salon. From the large and imposing, to the subtle and elegant, the mirrors and chairs chosen for the salon frequently dictate the style of their surroundings.

With such a large choice of products available, it is obviously extremely important to choose the correct ones for the salon. Will the salon be ultra-modern and minimal, attracting the fashionable young crowd? Or will the style be retro and fun, creating an enjoyable atmosphere for both employees and customers alike? Maybe a classic approach is preferred, for those looking to create a relaxing, trustworthy setting for their clients.

On the following pages is just a small selection of the wide range of styling units and chairs available from Essential Salon Supplies, starting with the Moon styling unit (see below). This classy mirror utilises its form to full effect; the minimalist style of the full-length mirror also contains space for products in the form of 3 rectangular windows in the mirror itself, behind which neon-lit shelving help create an extra display section in the main work area.

with a full-length mirror on both sides, the second with a work unit on one side, with a display area on the other side. The third

option uses both sides for display. The Flute styling chair utilises a conical shape to add a touch of style to the work area. The

comfortable backrest also serves as the chair’s armrests.

4 The Square combines minimalist style with lasting quality; the smooth lines of the arms and chair, coupled with the square

aluminium base, creates an impressive styling chair.

5 The Diamond styling chair proposes a unique style to the hairdresser. The elegant squared stitching on the thick,

padded seat and backrest compliment the stylish, transparent plexiglass armrests.

When tragedy struck in the summer of 2009, and Alley Cuts was forced to close due to a huge fire, Siobhan Burke had to face starting

from scratch, and looked to recreate the atmosphere and style that had become synonymous with her salon before the accident. Fortunately for her, Siobhan already had a great relationship with Essential Salon Supplies, and thanks to their hard work and experience, as well as Siobhan’s passion and skill for the business, Alley Cuts rose from the ashes, better than ever!

Page 54: Essential Salons

Starting with a simple premise, Siobhan set out to create a ‘state of the art salon’. When setting such high standards for a salon, it was important that every aspect of the salon screamed quality, from the colours of the walls to the material of the floor, and from the style of the furniture to the extra touches of class around the workplace.

‘I was looking to make a more spacious salon; one with beautiful décor, as well as an attractive retail area,’ explains Siobhan. Thanks in part to the retro-style wallpaper found in certain areas of the salon, retail products stand out, while areas without wallpaper are accentuated, creating added importance and a distinct, clean look for places such as the styling area.

The styling area itself boasts stunning backlit Fiji mirrors, with a bronze-coloured frame helping the mirrors stand out from their surroundings. The illumination found on the styling units creates an elegant atmosphere, while also attaining the modern look Siobhan was striving for. In front of the Fiji units, the Quadro chairs combine a soft, curved form with a large, impressive style of chair, perfect in creating maximum comfort for the customer, while also fitting in beautifully with their surroundings. The ‘Black Damask’ Sky Colour works well with the bronze of the mirrors, as well as the colours found around the rest of the salon.

This attention to detail is continued in the shampoo area, where four shampoo units offer comfort and relaxation to customers, thanks to the soft, accommodating styles of the Megawash and Shiatuwash shampoo units, again in elegant Black Damask. In addition, this area also offers a ‘VIP’ section, with one Shiatsuwash in a strong Poppy Red colour on a raised platform, separated from the other three shampoo units. This unit boasts a sophisticated massage system, perfect for treating extra special clients.

Now that Alley Cuts is back in business, it’s certainly much easier to look at the positives such a situation brought about. ‘It took a lot of hard work and dedication to come back from what happened,’ says Siobhan, ‘but we battled through, and look at us now!’

The Limerick and Munster Hairdressing community was wowed by celebrity hairstylists Lee Stafford and Steve Turner when they made their trip to Ireland in Feb 09.

Salon owner, consumer brand icon and media darling Lee Stafford has a reputation for producing beautiful commercial work. His down-to-earth approach and global experience gives him a unique perspective and an even more unique flair. He has a total understanding of the type of hairdressing needed to keep hairdressers involved in their work, and clients in love with their hairdresser. As a self-confessed education junkie he knows all about dedication to improving your skills. Lee was in town with Steve Turner to deliver a creative masterclass at Essential Salon Supplies’ Hair Academy to a crowd of over 40 stylists.

Such was the star draw of Lee Stafford that TV3’s celebrity news show ‘Xpose’ dispatched the glamorous Karen Koster

to Limerick to cover the event. Lee, most famous for working with musicians the Rolling Stones, counts Jordan and multiple supermodels as part of his glittering clientele.

Commenting on the huge interest in the Masterclass, Essentials Managing Director, Alan Gleeson said “Lee Stafford is one of the most recognised celebrity hairstylists at the moment, and I think it was wonderful that he came to Limerick to impart his knowledge of what’s on-trend.”

Continuing on, he said “The beauty of Lee’s workshop is that he always likes to work with real people, not models. Hence he demonstrates how high fashion hairdressing trends and cutting edge techniques can be used in the salon.”

Essential Salon Supplies have been flooded with enquiries as to when Stafford will be back in Limerick. 2 dates are planned for 2010, so contact ESS for further details!

When a salon opens in a brand new shopping centre, such as the one found in Tipperary, the potential for success is incredible. However, in order to achieve that potential, the salon itself must

be of the highest quality in order to attract passers-by, and build up a strong client base. That is why the George Lang Hair Group worked closely with Essential Salon Supplies to create a salon that they both knew would stand out from the crowd!

With a large area to work in, the possibility of creating a spacious, open workspace was too good to refuse, and as such the eleven workstations are well distributed in the salon, allowing more space to work, and more privacy and relaxation for the client. The same applies for the shampoo area, where extra space has been allowed between each unit, creating a more personal space for everybody. In the middle of the salon, a discreet, elegant waiting seat creates an area that is both important to the salon layout, yet also detached from the hustle and bustle of the work area.

Immediately upon entering, the use of earth tones is evident, with creams and browns seen throughout the salon. The Barcelona styling unit, with its dark wengè wood frame, contrasts well with the cream colour seen on the walls, while the aluminium work shelf in the centre of the mirror ties together with the stainless steel base of the Nexia chair. The rich brown colour seen in the wooden frame of the Barcelona is also continued in the Nexia, with the chair utilising Salon Ambience’s ‘Mahogany’ material to create an elegant effect.

The Mahogany colour is used again on the Pouf waiting seat in the centre of the salon, and once more on the Megawash shampoo units at the end of the salon. The curved shapes of the armrests and seat of the washunits work together well with the Nexia styling chairs, while the subtle steel seen on the armrests again recall other steel elements found in the salon.

Such a spacious, elegant salon cannot fail to attract attention from passers-by, and thanks to both the setup of the salon, and the hard work put in by everybody involved, the George Lang Hair Group continues to go from strength to strength!

When Susan Carey looked to open a new hairdressing salon, it was vital for her to stand out from the crowd, as she had the feeling that there was ‘a gap in Tralee for an upmarket salon’. As soon as she came to this decision, there was only one company to talk to: Essential Salon Supplies!

‘I had been looking at this space for a long time,’ explains Susan, ‘but I just wanted to wait for the right opportunity’. Positioned near a main road, Exposé certainly attracts the attention of passers-by, thanks to the large windows at the front of the salon allowing a clear view of inside. ‘I think a lot of attention is created by the furniture, colours and reception area,’ agrees Susan. Immediately upon entering, it is clear that the colour scheme and lighting play an important part in the salon’s image. The walls of the central island behind the reception desk is covered in a stylish green wallpaper with a fashionably retro pattern; as Susan elaborates, ‘I wanted green in the salon from day one’, and this contrasts well with its minimalist, classy surroundings, and shows the attention to detail found in this salon, with this central area also proving

Page 66: Essential Salons

to be the perfect place for extra product placement. The same scheme is found in the waiting area, combining well with the Cuba waiting sofas that are upholstered in both white and lime green, cleverly linking the two main colour schemes of the salon together. The large Millennium desk illuminates the reception area, creating a strong impact even from outside, while the chandelier above the desk again shows the contrasting styles found in the salon.

The use of illumination continues into the styling section, with the Platinum work units boasting a mirror that is completely surrounded by light, coming from a backlit plexiglass frame. These styling units are also visible from outside, and together with the reception area, leave a lasting impression on any potential customers.

In addition to the obvious importance of light and colour in the salon, Susan also chose a fashionable new material to upholster her styling chairs and shampoo units; the Salon Ambience ‘Viper’, a material that recreates a dark brown snakeskin effect, working together well with the green in the salon, yet distinguished enough to again be different from what is found in most of today’s salons.

As important as the material on the furniture is, the style of the products themselves must also be top-quality, which is why Susan chose the Globe styling chairs, a large, accommodating 70’s style chair, and the Wellness shampoo units, with a fully integrated, state of the art massage system. ‘I wanted my customers to feel pampered,’ explains Susan, ‘which is why the massage is so good’. Thanks to the fashionable style of the furniture, it blends seamlessly together with its surroundings, which is exactly as Susan planned, stating, ‘I was definitely looking for a bit of old and a bit of new, although the most important thing was that the salon is friendly and welcoming’.

With an extremely precise vision of her salon from the start, everything had to be perfect from the very beginning. ‘I was delighted to see that Essential Salon Supplies had the whole package,’ concludes Susan, ‘I wanted the best I could get, and it’s all come together brilliantly!’

S H A M P O OAn area of total relaxation and calm, the shampoo area has taken on increasing importance in the modern salon environment. With comfort as a priority, customers look to be pampered, and view this area as a place to lie back and unwind. Aside from the aspect of comfort, there is of course the appearance of the shampoo unit itself, as the style of this area can either blend in seamlessly with the rest of the salon, or separate itself completely, creating an island of tranquillity in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a busy salon.

Many modern salons now look to technological advances to both attract new customers, and make existing customers feel appreciated. Shampoo units with incorporated massage systems are now found regularly in new salons, and certainly add something extra to the time a customer spends in the salon. Alternatively, cutting-edge salons are now looking towards air-massage systems, the fashionable new option for those looking to stand out from the crowd.

The brand new Air-Lux (see below) combines style with advanced technology through its

innovative massage system; a constant air supply manipulating the user’s back, leg and

calf muscles, awarding them total relaxation. On the following pages is a small selection of the shampoo units available from Essential Salon Supplies and Salon Ambience.

Salon owners, both new and existing, are constantly striving for individuality in a tough marketplace; from the services they offer to the prices they charge, and from the products

they sell to the furniture they use, all salons try their best to stand out from the crowd. As well as these vital components of a successful salon, it is worth considering the impact of a tasteful, eye-catching colour scheme.

When opening a salon for the first time, a lot of thought is put into the type of floor, and the colour of the walls, but what of the material found on the furniture? After all, both employees and customers will be in close contact with the furniture at all times, whether in the

reception area, the styling section, or the shampoo area, so it makes sense to have attractive, quality materials that tie all the sections together, adding style and sophistication to the salon in general. Thanks to Essential Salon Supplies, high-quality furniture is available in a choice of over 40 top-quality colours, with a variety of different materials to choose from. From elegant, neutral tones, to vibrant, funky colours, the choice of scheme can really dictate the style of a salon. And with the extra possibility of mixing colours, it becomes even easier for a salon to distinguish itself from its competitors. Suddenly, the idea of furnishing a salon completely in black begins to sound a lot less appealing! Here is just one example of a salon that utilises Salon Ambience’s Sky Colours to full effect…

The furniture in question is Salon Ambience’s Liberty styling unit and Melissa chair. This combination was originally used in the Salon Ambience catalogue, and after Karen was shown the photo by Essential Salon Supplies, she knew immediately it was the right setting for her. ‘As soon as I saw them in the catalogue, I said, ‘I’m getting them!’’ enthuses Karen.

The unique patterns found on the Liberty’s frame, in black and white, create an amazing effect in the workplace, while the oval mirror and dark glass work shelf complete the distinctive effect. The black and white style of the frame is seen again in the salon, with Karen choosing similar wallpaper on one of the walls to continue the theme. Meanwhile, the strong ‘Poppy Red’ material on the Melissa chairs and create an impressive contrast to the mirrors, and this colour is also seen again in the salon, firstly on the Melissa shampoo units, and then again on some walls in the salon, helping, as Karen says, to ‘break the white areas of the salon up’. The chromed armrests and aluminium base of the chair maintain the class and elegance of the rest of the salon, and also work well with the reception desk that itself boasts a curved aluminium front panel with a wooden structure.

For a salon, and owner, with such a unique vision and style, it’s only natural that even the name carries a certain significance, ‘My grandmother lived in a place called Knockfierna, which means, ‘hill of the fairies’’, explains Karen, ‘and it meant a lot to include something about fairies in the name of my own salon.’

New hair brand is on Cloud Nine

When Yorkshire entrepreneur Robert Powls founded hair styling iron brand ghd* in 2000, he could not have imagined how the market for hair irons would grow, taking his original brand to

global success and cementing the hair iron’s status as an essential part of the daily routines of women around the world.

A decade later, Robert Powls and his team is back and has partnered with the original manufacturers of ghd* irons, Unil Electronics, to create a new hair styling brand, Cloud Nine. Gone are the days where you were at the mercy of one temperature setting – the Cloud Nine iron allows you to take instant control, drop the heat, and enter a new flexible world of styling.

With its low, medium and high heat options, Cloud Nine is a hair styling tool that enables you to achieve a whole range of finishes, including natural curls and waves, or even simply smooth a blow dry. The iron gives superior styling performance over any other product in the market and boasts a

ESSENTIALPROMOTION

Page 85: Essential Salons

number of other unique features that set it far apart from its competitors, such as never before seen plates that actually add extra shine to the hair, a professional hairdresser-friendly swivel cord, a heat resistant sleeve and a state-of-the-art RFID identity chip.

The Cloud Nine team, which includes several of the original ghd* Board and the original strategic marketing team behind ghd*, Propaganda, commissioned an independent quantitative research study in August 2009 to compare consumer opinion of the new Cloud Nine irons with ghd*. Consumers were clear in their choice - 62% of consumers preferred the new Cloud Nine to ghd*.

The past ten years have seen many different hair iron brands come and go, but there has yet to have been a true contender for the market leader’s crown, until now. Cloud Nine managing director Martin Rae explains: “This is the first fundamental market innovation since ghd launched. Everyone else has tried to match ghd, but, as its been developed by the team that invented that market-leading technology, not only does Cloud Nine know how

to match that, it has the capabilities to better it.

“Research has shown that, ten years on, women are much more

interested in the health and condition of their hair, they want

to look natural and they want the flexibility to be curly, wavy,

straight or have volume, despite their hair type. None of that

could be achieved with the existing technology available on the

market, so it seemed the perfect time to create Cloud Nine.”

Cloud Nine not only offers style, flexibility and originality, it is

also a professional-only brand, exclusive to premium salons – and

promises to stay that way.

“Extensive research in the early stages of the brand development

suggested that exclusivity in a hair brand was essential to salons

and stylists. Visiting the salons is an experience, and stylists

believed that clients should only be treated with a professional

product, one that is used and approved by top stylists. In

response to this demand, we have pledged to always remain a

professional brand that will only ever be available in salons”, said Martin.

Since the brand’s launch to the Irish hair trade in October last year, over 120 salons are now using and stocking Cloud Nine. Amanda Whittome, Irish hairdresser of the year 2009 from

one of Limerick’s top hairdressers The Hugh Campbell Group, comments: “Cloud Nine is a step forward for styling tools, and the temperature control enables you to create individual looks by changing the temperature according to what you want to achieve.”

Martin adds: “The response from the professional hair industry

since Cloud Nine’s launch both in the UK and Ireland has been immense. For example, after using the irons at London Fashion Week in September, James Brown, top session stylist and right

hand man to supermodel Kate Moss wholly supports the brand. Top beauty bloggers and beauty writers in the national consumer press have also given us great feed back and online reviews that

we are very happy with.”

When looking to furnish a brand new salon, or refit an existing one, the choice of products, colour schemes and layout is fundamental to its eventual success. Should the salon be modern and minimal, with neutral, clean colours? Or would people feel more comfortable in a cosy, relaxing atmosphere, with warm colours, and a classic, timeless style? Perhaps

the direction should be ultra-fashionable, with cutting-edge technology and style to attract a certain clientele? Certainly there is never a lack of ideas and opinions when thinking about such an important decision, but how can anybody possibly know which is the right one?

The Salon Ambience Design Centre in Italy is proud to work closely with Essential Salon Supplies, offering informed opinions on the latest styles, fashions and tendencies seen in the hairdressing and beauty sector. Working for companies worldwide, the Design Centre searches to create the best possible proposal for each and every salon, with the aim of offering exactly what the salon owner is looking for!

Page 88: Essential Salons

The first step in this process, after receiving all necessary information from the hairdresser, is the 2D design. The most important aspect is taking into consideration any ideas and wishes from the salon owner (after all, it is their salon!), while also creating a work area with a professional, attractive style. It is surprising how many ‘design’ companies forget such basics such as the amount of space necessary between mirrors, or the extra space required around the shampoo units, which is why the Design Centre prides itself on taking care of the essentials, while also creating a plan that is fresh and eye-catching.

The next step, and certainly the most interesting in terms of understanding how the salon could eventually look, is the 3D ‘photo-rendering’ of the design. This layout utilises modern computer programming techniques to create realistic 3D colour designs of the interior of the salon, both from a bird’s eye view, and also from a first-person perspective inside the salon. This allows the salon owner to see not just the layout of the salon, but also a suggestion for the eventual colour scheme, as well as the furniture, giving a much more complete idea of the salon’s potential.

Knowing that there is this kind of experience and professionalism to rely on is always a comforting thought for the hairdresser – in fact, many salon owners are so happy with the results that they use the design exactly as it was proposed to them by the Design Centre, which is a source of great satisfaction to both Essential Salon Supplies and Salon Ambience!

When Tanya and Eugenie set out to open their salon, they wanted to take into consideration a number of factors; not only did they want to create a work

environment that was good for both them and their employees, but they also wanted to create a place that fit in perfectly with the neighbourhood and that was extremely inviting to passers-by.

The first thing for them was to decide on the style of the salon itself. ‘I really wanted a classic style,’ says Tanya, ‘and it was important to fit in with the style of the rest of the surrounding area – it’s important that people understood that this was the right place for them!’

With the style of the salon finalised, the next step was

choosing the colour scheme. ‘The colours I chose had to fit in together with the original idea,’ explains Tanya, ‘and that’s why I wanted to use creams and browns the most - they’re classic colours – and I then used a rich red to add some warmth and character to the salon.’ The central area of the salon uses this ‘rich red’ colour, and creates a strong impact upon entering the salon, without taking away from the elegance of the salon itself.

After the style and colour scheme came the important decision of choosing just the right furniture. The dark, wengè wood panel of the Venezia work unit contrasts extremely well with the cream walls, with the unique style of the mirror itself adding character to the styling area. In front of the mirrors, the Alexa chair uses a

curved form to create a relaxing, accommodating environment, and boasts Salon Ambience’s special ‘Viper’ colour, a faux-snakeskin material on a dark brown base that really helps the chairs stand out and make a great impression. Both the chair and the material are seen again on the shampoo units, where the Alexa Comfortwash lives up to its name as an amazingly comfortable washunit. At the front of the salon, the Cayman reception desk again uses dark wengè wood to tie the salon together, while also incorporating the ‘Poppy Red’ material into the desk itself, allowing it to work well with the ‘rich red’ central area.

Throughout the entire process, Essential Salon Supplies were on hand to give Tanya and Eugenie the best advice available.

November 2009 saw Callam spend a productive day in Limerick, conducting a Personal Coaching Day for Essential Salon Supplies. A small audience of 35 were treated to a display in the morning of Callam’s intricate catwalk styles including one of his signature Session/Catwalk styles The Cheat Pleat. A question and answer session flowing alongside while Callam wowed the crowd with snippets of info from his editorial and photoshoot work having tended to the tresses of Amy Winehouse and Kylie Minogue to

name but a few. The afternoon provided eight attendees with a hands-on chance to work on live models overseen by Callam, giving advice and personal coaching.

Pamela McEvoy of Essential Salon Supplies said, “We here at ESS were delighted to welcome Callam Warrington to Limerick for such an up close and personal session. All who attended were treated to a fun and interactive day, getting an insight into the career of one of the leading educators in the industry. Callam told us, “It was a well organized and enjoyable trip in a beautiful part of the world. The attendees all had different levels of experience, so being able to work in a small group allowed me to address their individual needs. I’m really looking forward to going back next year.”

r e c e p t i o nAs the first area visible to a customer upon entering a salon, and also frequently noticeable from outside, the reception area needs to be both accommodating and impactful; it needs to tempt new customers in, while at the same time making regular customers feel at home.

As the centrepiece of the reception area, the desk should stand out from its surroundings, creating a focal point for anyone entering the salon or passing by, whereas the nearby waiting area can be created with the intention of fitting together well with the main section of the salon (in terms of colours or shapes), or creating a contrast, to separate each section of the salon to maximum effect. Additionally, today’s salon owners are becoming increasingly aware that retail is an important source of income, and have now begun to realise the potential in selling hair products to their customers. For this reason, a variety of styles of display units are now available, allowing a salon to show off their complete range of services anywhere in the workplace.

Below, the attention-grabbing Millennium Crystal reception desk incorporates a crystal-studded, padded front panel with a wide selection of Salon Ambience Sky Colours to choose from. The desk’s silver wood structure compliments the stylish lacquered black frame.

Martin Kiely is recognised as one of the leading experts in the hairdressing industry in Limerick, and he knew that when Le Chocolat was to

be opened, he could count on Essential Salon Supplies to provide him with top quality furniture and support.

Speaking to joint salon manager Carol Ann, she explains, ‘the idea was to create a minimal, modern style, definitely something that stands out from the crowd’. With that in mind, Essential Salon Supplies set out to create the best proposal for Martin’s needs. The Platinum styling unit uses a simple, minimalist form to make a strong impression

in the salon, thanks to its backlit plexiglass panel and steel frame. The aluminium shelf and stainless steel footrest complete the striking effect. In front of the styling unit, the Chloe styling chair distinguishes itself form the mirror thanks to its subtle curves and accommodating form. The stainless steel base, however, helps tie the chair together with the steel of the work unit.

The colours chosen for the salon also play a large part in its unique style. The off-white colour of the walls keep the main area light and simple, and also allow a larger mix of colours than would otherwise be possible, while the wooden floor adds warmth to the salon. The colours found on the Chloe chair, ‘Champagne’ and ‘Honey’ both use softer, more gentle tones, while retaining an element of warmth and sophistication that is not always that easy to find. The insides of the chair, in Champagne, work well with the wall colouring, whereas the Honey material on the outsides create a richer, more appealing impression to the work area.

The shampoo area mixes minimalism and comfort to great effect, with two different types of shampoo unit being used. The Wellness shampoo unit, with a top of the range massage system incorporated into the seat, recalls the minimal style of the mirrors, and uses the same Champagne material found on the styling chairs, with the armrests in an elegant stainless steel, again tying the shampoo unit together with the rest of the work area. Next to the Wellness are the Dreamwash washunits; another product that capitalises on a simple style and structure, while retaining its elegance thanks to the smooth form of the chair and armrests, again in Champagne and stainless steel respectively.

Divided into two floors, Le Chocolat uses open space to its advantage, with extra styling stations and shampoo units found upstairs, splitting the work area into two, yet creating an accommodating atmosphere for clients. ‘Everybody’s happy with the result,’ says Carol Ann, ‘we have clients of all types, and of all ages, and they’ve all been impressed with the atmosphere and style of Le Chocolat!’
