Wednesday, Day 3, April 15 ESOL Support for Social Studies Respecting Rights and Promoting the Common Good

Key Terms to Understand:

1. respect – to be thoughtful about or careful with respect the rights of other people – must not interfere with other people’s rights Ms. Carrier respects the rights of her students to have their own opinions, even if they differ from hers.

2. common good – the benefit or interests of everyone in a group or community promote the common good – participating in activities that help all people Ocee promotes the common good by practicing school-wide fire and evacuation drills. Our OEF works together for the common good of our students. The American Red Cross works for the common good by providing help to those affected by emergencies and disasters.

3. participate – to take or have a part in Will you participate in the play on Thursday?

4. stay informed – to keep up to date with information During the pandemic, we stayed informed about our school by using remote learning.

5. vote – to make a choice in an election or meeting, by casting a ballot, raising a hand, or speaking a choice out loud. I registered to vote in the next election.

6. volunteer – a person who is willing to help with something, usually with no pay. (noun) to agree to do something without expecting something in return, such as money. (verb) She was the volunteer who volunteered all the time.

7. communicate - to reveal knowledge or information from one to another We learned to communicate even though we didn’t speak the same language!

1. You need to choose ONE issue: animal rights, environment, bullying, or education.
