  • 1. I have chosen this photo to be my maincover photo and to do so, I had to edit itso it was the right size because I hadplanned on it being a medium close up. Icropped it first and used the lasso tool soit was just her head and shoulders andthen used the quick selection tool to copyand paste it as another layer so I had twolayers. I then changed the backgroundlayer to black and white and blurred sothat her face was more in focus. I thenclicked on layer 1 which was just her faceand shoulders and made it brighter andalso increased the contrast. This is the final edited photo.Edited PhotoOriginal Photo Layers

2. After I hade finished the editing of the photograph Iwas going to use, I added my masthead. I made itbig and bright at the top of the cover to stand out.Because I had made the photograph as two layers, Iwas able to put the masthead behind the covermodels head but in front of the background so youcouldnt see a little bit of the text. I tried it in frontof the cover model but I didnt like it as much. Tomake the masthead, I used a website to find goodstrong fonts to use. I then downloaded the one Iliked best and imported it to Photoshop. On photoshop, I added a text box, wrote the word SOLO andchanged it to the font that I had downloaded andimported.I next added a bright green star using the shapetool with the words 1ST EDITION inside byincluding a text box. This was to show the readerthat this was the first SOLO magazine that wasproduced. I moved them so they were in a goodposition based on my plan by using the move tool. 3. After adding the star, I added the date, price and issue number of the magazine. I added this because then the reader would know how much to pay for it and if they have missed an issue. I used the text box tool and placed it the other side of the cover model. The next thing I did was a big thing. I started to addthe artists name in big letters to stand out andadded a line of green for the background anddecreased the opacity of it so it wasnt to bold. Ithink that this made it look good and better than itwould have looked if I had kept the opacity high. Imade the rectangle using the shape tool anddragged it to whereabouts I wanted it and theshape I wanted. I moved it to the place I wanted itbased on what I had drawn on my sketches. On theshape, I also added a drop shadow at the bottom ofit so i fades out instead of just a bold line. I madethe lettering yellow which stood out from the greenas it was brighter and so the reader knew who themain article was about. 4. The next thing I did was add the smaller taglinesthat goes with the artists name DANIELLE LITTLER.I did this because I thought i would attract thereader and also tell them a bit of what the articlewas going to be about. I think that this was animportant piece of information for the magazine tohave so I tried to make it so people would want toread it. I used text boxes to do this and used themove tool for where I wanted them to be afterlooking at my sketch. After I thought the main article tag line was done, Istarted to add more taglines but about differentthings that the read would find inside. I tried tomake the bright in contrast with the backgroundand also to again attract more readers to differentthings that they may like included such as FREE CDand a GIG GUIDE etc. I used these because Ithought this is what young adult readers wouldenjoy to know as they are popular with this kind ofaudience. I again used the text box and move toolto create them and put them where I wanted basedon my plan. I also added a barcode as I felt it wasneeded. This is the final outcome. 5. To start my contents page off, I first added the titleof the page and also the magazine name butsmaller than I did on the cover. I placed the wordSOLO to the left of the Contents text but higherup which I thought was good. I used a font for theword Contents that I had found in the list, but Iwanted the text that said SOLO to be in the samestyle as the cover. To do this I imported the textonto Quark as well and found it in the list of fonts Icould use.Next I added the star and 1ST EDITION text that Ihad the cover because I didnt want the to be asmall white space at the top corner as it would lookboring. To add this, I copied and pasted it on fromphoto shop so it was the exact same colour andsize. I also added the month of the magazine usinga text box and a green line to border it off from therest of the page using the shape tool. To make itthat colour I created a new colour in the list at theside and found one that I thought suitable for mycolour scheme. I think this also made the page lookgood. 6. The next thing I did was add photographs that I hadtaken in the two photo shoots I did. The chosethree that I thought the reader would be intriguedabout including photo for the main article. I wantedtwo of the photographs to be the same size, butthe main one bigger to stand out as it was the mainarticle in the magazine. I had to import the imagesfrom my folders from each of the photo shoots thatI did.I next added page numbers on two green linesgoing down up to the number I wanted in themagazine. To create the green lines, I used theshape tool and dragged to where and how big Iwanted them to be. I then used the same colour asI did before for the other rectangle I had created. Ialso put page numbers on the photographs in whitetext using a text box to stand out and the numberbeing what page I want them on. 7. I next added a box where I wanted the Editor noteto go and included a small title in yellow andorange text to stand out from the green that I hadchosen. I also wrote the text that I wanted a placedit inside the green box. I found the font for the titleof this feature in the list I had on Quark but made itdifferent from the other text as it was a messagefrom the editor which I felt was important to standout. For the rest of the text, I used the same fontfrom the other bits of text and created two textboxes. To make them go from one to the other, Ilinked them together so if I went over in the firstbox, it would immediately go over to the secondtext box I had linked it to.The last thing I added was the contents of themagazine. I put the titles of the pages in line withthe page numbers and in bold black text. I then puta small blurb with each of them to tell the readermore information of whats actually on the page. For this, I again created two text boxes and linkedthem up so if it went over in the first, it would gostraight to the second one linked to it. This is thefinal outcome. 8. At the start of creating my double page spread, thefirst thing I put on it was the main photographcover the whole of the left side. I had edited thisphotograph to make the artist brighter andincrease the contrast. To add this, I imported it intoQuark and made it the size I wanted to be andmoved it using the move tool to where I wanted itbased on my plan.I next added the title of the page at the top whichwas her name because it would help the readerfind the page quicker if they were flipping throughthe magazine. I also made the first name andsecond name a different colour from each otherand the same style text as the masthead on thefrom cover. To create these, I used two text boxes. Iwanted them both to be the same font so because Ihad already imported it, it was on the list of fontsthat I could use. I then changed the colour of themboth. 9. Next, I added the text. Because the two pages were set up in three columns, all I had to do was add text boxes to the right size and make it three columns of text. I imported the article that I had written on Microsoft Word onto Quark and into the three text boxes I had created. I did not need to add a runaround to these. The next thing I did was add extra images from thephoto shoot. I imported them and moved them towhere I wanted them using the move tool. For theblack and white photograph, I edited that to makeit look like her actual new album which the articlewas about. I edited it on photo shop by changingthe colours and adding text to where the alumname and artist name would be. 10. What I did next was add text from the article that would stand out and a small blurb to the article. I moved the text boxes to where I wanted them using the move tool and because one of them went of the actual article, I modified that text box the make it a run-around text box. This means that wherever I placed that text box, the things that it would normally be on top would go around it and so this is what happened when I modified it like this.I was originally going the leave the double pagespread as it was in the last screen shot but I feltthat it was missing something. Because of this Ithought that adding a faint background to it wouldgive it a complete look. To use the background onthis screenshot, I had to create it. To create it I usedPhotoshop and used the shape tool on that. It gaveme options of what shape and because this was anautumn magazine and the colour scheme wasorange, yellow, green and brown to match thephoto shoot, I thought a leaf pattern would beappropriate. I made the leaves a faint colour thatyou would be able to read the text above on whichtook me a while because every colour that I used, Ihad to change the text colour to see if you couldread it. I eventually found the right colours that youcould read it on and this is the final outcome.
