Bordwell and Thompson• Graphic:

– Graphic discontinuity where the singer moves when standing still.

– Graphic continuity where the singer was shown throughout with references to the same bird.

– Graphic continuity in the colour as there were no colour clashes in the video. ‘Smooth Continuity’.

– The shape, volume and depth of the scenery did not change. It was constant (graphic continuity).

– Graphic match between bird flying past and the hat. This is because both are the same colour, black.

Rhythmic

• Shots were long to match the tempo of the music.

• The objects move in time with the music’s beat and rhythm.

Spatial

• Contrast in setting at the end between the clean room with the plastic on the chairs to the blood on the floor staining it. This is not greatly used because the emphasis of the video is on the singer and the song rather than the video.

Temporal

• None because the video flows through time and doesn’t use omissions of time to create an abstract video. The video is in sequence and the shots occur in the order they happen.

Carol Vernaillus • Appears to have a narrative as it

follows the singer the whole way through and doesn’t go back in time.

• Limited shot types relates to classic continuity. There is only one shot type that is a long shot. However, since the camera doesn’t move the singer moves to change the shot type from an extreme long shot to a long shot or a close-up.

• Reinforces ideas and principles of classic continuity again as the editing is natural and flows as the video preserves the flow of time and coherent of space.

Andrew Goodwin • Disjuncture

• The video does not relate to the lyrics and has a visual narrative. This is because I do not think the lyrics associate with furniture moving or insects in a room.

• Amplification• However, it also could be amplification structure. This is

because the video has a visual narrative that creates new levels of meaning. For instance the idea of insanity exaggerated through a bird flying in a room and furniture moving without people touching them. The idea that the room is large but narrow at the same time is confusing and this confusion is turned to insanity because the singer is moving without walking.

Genre

• The genre of this song and video is Acid Jazz.• The genre combines elements of jazz, funk and

hip hop.• The video keeps with the conventions of the

genre because the idea of the video is to sell the band and song, therefore the video sticks with conventions so that the audience wouldn’t talk about the video but the song or band instead.
