The flexibility and innovativedesign of IFS™ switchboardssignificantly enhances Eaton’sPowerChain ManagementSolutions. Key benefits of thetotal solution concept include:
Greater Reliability –Maintain vital operations withsteady, high-quality power everyminute of every day.
Effective use of capital –Put your capital to work faster, and keep it working longer withelectrical designs that requireless equipment and space, serv-ices that extend equipment lifeand pre-assembled equipmentthat can be installed faster.
Risk mitigation – Reducethe risk of construction delaysand cost overruns with a coordinated approach to powersystem design, procurement, installation and maintenance.
Background
Orange County Choppers(OCC), recognized as one of the world’s premier builders ofcustom motorcycles, planned a 100,000 square foot multi-purpose building at its head-quarters in Newburgh, New York.
The two-story structure wouldhouse OCC manufacturing, atwo-tiered retail store, and a studio where its show, AmericanChopper, is filmed for presenta-tion on the Discovery Channel.
A combination of stone, steeland glass construction withcurved-line exterior design, thebuilding would become the focal point of the OCC headquarters location.
Challenge
The original electrical layout, using a traditional equipmentdesign, included the majority oftransformers being installed inthe basement area. The designrequired excessively long runsto the panelboards locatedthroughout the facility.
The configuration, combinedwith the entire system consist-ing of three switchboards, fivetransformers and 14 panel-boards, made IFS™ (IntegratedFacilities Systems) a formidableoption.
OCC also was concerned withthe space constraints for theelectrical equipment in the studio area.

transformers, placing it next to the panelboards they werefeeding. The solution wasreduced to a pair of basementswitchboards, four IFS switch-boards installed on the first andsecond floors as well as in thestudio and manufacturing areas,
and three stand-alone panel-boards that are wall mounted.
The IFS configuration solved thespace issue in the studio, fulfill-ing OCC’s desire for a compact, streamlined appearance of thedistribution equipment.
While the solution itself helpedto shorten the construction period, Eaton contributed inanother way with an accelerateddelivery schedule made possibleby the capability of its Hartford(Connecticut) Satellite Center.
Responsible for manufacturingall of the electrical equipmenton the OCC project, theHartford facility built andshipped the main 2500 ampswitchboard within two weeks, facilitating the utility service forincoming power and connectionof the HVAC lines. The Satellitemet one-week schedules foreach of the four pre-assembledIFS structures.
Results
The conversion to IFS for theOCC project freed up preciousretail and manufacturing spacethat would not have been avail-able using the stick-built design. In addition to the constructiontime saved, IFS became a quickresolution to the customer’sdemand for an enhanced electrical package.
Initially, the customer intendedto discuss options with Eatonand three major competitors, but concluded its search afterhearing the IFS presentation.
Because of its efficient solutionoffering, Eaton helped OCC gaina LEED (Leadership in Energyand Environmental Design) certification for the new building.

Solution
Eaton proposed IFS switch-boards, a major element in itsPowerChain Management solu-tion, which typically can save acustomer as much as 50% infloor space. Sales engineerCarmine Costanzo, working with the electrical contractorJeff Heck of JH ElectricalEnterprises, revised the initiallayout using the Eaton BidManager design tool.
Costanzo and the contractormade an on-site visit to verifydetails relating to the conversionand met twice with OCC con-struction manager Henry Kroll to review drawings and addresscustomer questions.
The converted lineup eliminatedthe run from the basement
Mikey Teutul of OCC helped assembleone of the IFS switchboards at theHartford satellite facility.
