And so the adventure begins here.

When we first started Destination Riyadh, the most common question we got from people was, “But what will you write about?”

Well, it has been three years since we launched the magazine and while the usual answer we often gave is - food, fashion, lifestyle, business and everything else in between; at the core of it, what

we’ve been writing about is YOU. Whether it’s the things you want to do, the kind of Riyadhi you want to be and the people you aspire to become; that’s what we’re here to write about. For the March edition, we wanted to give you an issue that explores how you can live life to the fullest in the city. This issue is all about the adventures you could take and the fun activities you can fill your days with.

We are proud to be featuring Riyadhis who are creating a balanced life in the city and inspiring others to do the same. From the Fajryat duo, who bicycled from Riyadh to Qassim, to the sherlocks behind Riyadh’s latest escape room craze, Breakout; you’ll find yourself wanting to go out of your comfort zone.

Destination strives to be your magazine, dear readers, our pages are filled with your stories, your successes and your actions that make our city an awesome place to live in. “What will we write about?” Our answer will tirelessly be, you.

THUMBS UP Yamama University Female Students Clinches Guiness World Record For World’s Largest Mosaic Made With Recycled Items

JANADRIAH 30th Culture and Heritage Festival an Epic AdventureYes, the Janadriah Festival 2016 is probably our favorite one yet. The organizers truly upped their ante and new additions to the Janadriah village had us skipping with joy.

What’s not to love? You get to see the best of what each region has to offer, you get to learn history, soak in the wonders of the Kingdom, discover traditions and this year, MORE FOOD.

One day wasn’t enough to fully indulge in the sights and sounds of the festival hence, we can’t wait for the next one and hopefully, they’ll start opening it up in the mornings for everyone.

The female students at Yamama University (YU) collected thousands of plastic water bottles, water bottle caps, glass bottles, aluminum cans, cardboards, plastic bags and green plastic bottles in order to create the mosaic, which was designed in the form of the Saudi national emblem. This awesome green initiative was spearheaded by the College of Business at YU, managed by Dr. Tahreem Noor Khan and

Nada El Ali, guided by the Vice Dean of COBA, Dr. Rana Al Masri. We are amazed by the show of camaraderie and support among all the women at YU in achieving this feat and we hope other universities will take their lead.

FINANCIAL PLANNING W I T H R E E M A S A A D

Generally, financial planning depends on three key legs:

Part one of the how-to series.

BuildingSAVING

GrowingINVESTING

RelaxingRETIRING

SO LET’S GET STARTED:STEP I: CREATE A TABLECreate a table with the following items in two separate columns:INCOMEAny income stream that will continue throughout your life (retirement benefits, property rental, bonds, dividends). Divide that figure by 12.

EXPENSES- Estimate of the amount of

money you need after exiting the job market and/or ending your career on a monthly basis.

- Other needs and wants on a monthly basis (travel, medical, other).

- Emergency needs.

STEP 2: MULTIPLY YOUR EXPENSES BY 12- Deduct that number from the

monthly income figure.- If the result is positive, then

you are in a relatively safe zone. If not -which is mostly the case, due to inflation and unexpected life events- then please think it over thoroughly. Do not wait till it’s too late.

are probably overdue, in planning and implementing that is. And since it’s never too late, let me give you a few pointers.

Any sound Personal Finance plan depends on these three pillars. If this helps, think of it as a solidly built tripod; the stronger and leaner,

the better the outcome. Note that saving and retiring are more directly related since retirement requires an early start.

Passion. Vision. And a whole lot of imagination.By Jou Pabalate

The gold star serial entrepreneur is the spirit and backbone of Squares, a leading events management, entertainment and educational enrichment company in Riyadh.

The moment you meet Nora Al Okail, you get drawn to her genuine character and wit. She radiates with positivity and effortlessly showcases a visionary approach towards her work and passions.

It can be said that the 29-year-old founder of Squares is a business prodigy. She turned her first profit when she was a child, opening up, in her own term, a “supermarket” on the side of the street for the neighborhood children.

“One day I was in the supermarket with my father and instead of buying just one piece of chocolate, I asked if I could get a carton. I told him, ‘Can you buy me this and I will sell it, I want to open a supermarket and I will pay you back.’ He just laughed at me

and told me to get whatever I want,” said Al Okail. And so it went that Al Okail would open her supermarket right after school from noon until maghrib prayer. She even had a warehouse where she would keep her stocks under lock and key. At the age of 19, Al Okail decided to save up her university allowance in order to invest in her first business.

“My allowance then was SR 800. I remember clearly, I saved for four months and with just SR 2,500 as

my capital, I started an e-commerce website.”Eventually, Al Okail and her business partner sold their thriving first venture. She continued to venture into several commercial avenues before finding herself in the field of events management, or as Al Okail puts it, it’s the work that found her.

Al Okail had her first break in events management when she was tasked to organize one of the biggest Kuwaiti conferences in KSA and from there, the rest is history.

Positive Attitude!

“I like volunteering

a lot. A lot, lot. And I'm

naturally the kind of person that when you ask me to work on something,

I do the task quickly but also, I start thinking of

ways it can be better. I ask

myself, ‘what more can be done?’”

Page 22: DR Issue 37

20 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2016

My dream is to open an amusement park one day. I think it will

bring families and people together. What

excites me is seeing people having a shared

and unforgettable experience. — Nora Al Okail

Behind Al Okail’s desk hangs a framed sheet of paper. On it are words she wrote that embodies her beliefs, dreams and random thoughts:“Balance. Hope. Technology. Brave. Cooking. Good food. Relax. My sisters. Genuine,” she read.

Perhaps this is part of what makes Al Okail an exceptional character and a formidable entrepreneur. Her business acumen is balanced with

knowing what matters most. It’s one thing to dream big, another to have the rigor and relentless passion to do whatever it takes to make them come true.

Lastly, when we asked Al Okail how she is able to keep her cool on and not burnout from all the work, she replied with a sincere smile, “Who says I’m working? I’m living.”

Al Okail is reaping the fruits of her labor and setting an example for her contemporaries.

She was recently appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for Entrepreneurship by the Multipurpose Inter Parliamentary Union.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? YES, and you can fly it! You gotta admit, flying an airplane looks pretty cool but you get confused as soon as you see all those switches and buttons. Land and Space Aviation gives you the unique experience of flying a plane, the only thing you'll need to fly is a little courage. Whether you're looking to just try out flying or get a license, it's the place to go. Built under the Saudi Ultralight Aviation Federation, 750 pilots have graduated from this school, both male and female with different licenses including light sport, fixed wing, microlight and more.

So, what can you do as a completely clueless pilot wannabe? Co-pilot a plane with one of the qualified trainers from the first try. Yup. You're ready to get on a plane, push some buttons and make it fly. If you liked it so much, you can take more courses andafter completing the required number of hours, you can call yourself a pilot!

Breakout Riyadh is a new group activity where teams are put in an unusual room and are challenged to “escape” this room in 60 minutes, like a Detective Conan episode where Conan is stuck in a room and has to… break out from the room. Ahem.

Started by Saleh Alodan and Eyad Alkhayat, Breakout is now trying to provide brain challenging interactive entertainment in various forms such as treasure hunts, team races and other team building activities. Elementary, our dear readers!

Can you tell us a little about yourselves? We are both engineers who went to KFUPM in Dhahran. We played a lot of video games during college. After graduating, we actually went to Orlando for a week on a theme park spree, so we seriously enjoy interactive entertainment.

What inspired the concept behind Breakout? How did you come up with the idea? Living in Riyadh, we were always looking for different activities to do; and after visiting multiple escape rooms abroad, we decided to start our own escape room business and let people here enjoy the experience.

What was the most difficult aspect in the process of bringing Breakout to life?We first started with trying to understand what makes an escape room better than the others from our own personal experiences with them. It took us quite a long time to study how to actually build an enjoyable experience which occupies the right amount of time and make the team work together inside the room.

After that, we were faced with a bigger challenge; as two young engineers we had no previous experience on how to actually start a business. Which is where Squares, our partner, played a huge role in shaping Breakout and making it what it is today. With their experience and expertise, Squares and Raz Group gave us all the support we need to actually start and bring all the ideas in our heads to life.

What was the fastest time for anyone to break out of the room so far?We don’t tell people what the fastest time is, as we don’t want breaking the record to be a goal for them. We want people to come to enjoy their time. And by the way, you guys don’t have the fastest time anymore. (End Note: Ouch)

What made you choose

Sherlock Holmes as an

inspiration for Room

221B? Sherlock is a historical detective

who solves his cases in a creative way,

and the setting of Sherlock

Holmes’s Flat (221B Baker Street) is a

very puzzling place, which is why we chose to have 221B

Baker Street as our first escape

room.

You only have one room at the moment. Do you think that might be detrimental in the future for people who have tried Room 221B but want to come back again? We currently have another escape room under development, and we plan to develop more rooms as well in the future. You will be “trapped in time” in our second room.

Would it be difficult for Arabic speakers to play the game?We keep that in mind when designing our rooms. Arabic and English speakers should have the same experience.

Both men are professionally accomplished in their own right. Khalil Nebulsi is a media consultant for the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. He is a filmmaker by profession and has worked on several short films and documentaries both in Saudi Arabia and the region. Amr Madani, on the other hand, is the co-founder and CEO of National Talents Co.“TalentS” and Executive Director of Mishkat Interactive Center for Atomic & Renewable Energy. His great work in the field of STEM has been duly recognized by institutions and various media outlets.

Hence, make no mistake, these two are busybodies. In fact, the two were first colleagues before discovering their shared passion for bike riding.

The two started to ride with Darajati (My Bicycle), a group that cycles on lengthy routes around the city. It had a lot of beginners as riders, and they would usually cover 30 kilometers on an average.

Eventually, Nebulsi and Madani began enjoying longer trips, they would do 50 kilometers to a 100 on a good weekend morning. The two love taking their ride at the crack of dawn, right after fajr. “The weather is perfect, you have the roads all to yourself. You get to really take in the nature.”

When we asked them what their favorite bicycling areas in Riyadh are, Nebulsi replied, “Wadi Hanifah as well as Dhiriyah are just breathtaking. There’s so much you can experience, especially if you just take the time to really listen to what’s going on around you.” The two don’t wear earphones or listen to music during their rides, they prefer to relish the silence, enjoy a conversation and the sights and sounds of the trail.

And so it was that the two decided to embark on a bicycle

trip from Riyadh to Qassim. They formed a team called Fajryat, stemming from love of after fajr rides. The team has other riders too but for this particular trip, Nebulsi and Madani were the ones with enough experience and mileage on their pedals.

“Qassim was the destination we chose because it was not too far from Riyadh but also we didn’t have to use the highway. In fact, we took the old roads, the ones that travelers went through in the past. We wanted to discover traditional places and villages on our way, our final stop being Unayzah.”

Indeed, these nomads on bikes were able to meet wonderful people who made their experience richer. One particular town they spoke fondly of was AlQassab, where the locals welcomed them with dates and coffee. It was reminiscent of the bygone eras, when every Saudi had their doors open for anyone who passes their home.

Upon their arrival at Unayzah, the bikers and their team, who rode in an SUV in front of the two throughout the journey felt a sense of accomplishment. They took the time to visit a museum where historical artifacts including

the first biking license plate in the country can be found. Afterwards, Nebulsi quips, “we ate Al Baik.”

Riyadh-Qassim is only the beginning for them. Keep a lookout for their next epic adventure: a trip from Riyadh to Doha on March 25. Follow @FajryatC on Twitter for info.

Fajryat is a proof that if you put your mind into it and carve time in your day to do something you love, you can. These men are able to balance their careers, maintain their relationships and wake up at sunrise to pursue their passions.

SO REALLY, WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE?

By Johara AlmogbelMEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST!ARTIST’S CORNER

What got you started? I grew up in a highly creative environment where I was encouraged to interpret and create my own versions of the cartoons and comics I liked as a child. I continued to enjoy cartoons past my childhood and I felt they’d become an integral part of my life. A few years ago, I was introduced to Japanese anime and manga, which I found to be intricate and gorgeous and immediately, I wanted to emulate them and create my own versions of them. Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts?Sudden inspiration. I have always been able to draw, however, I only considered what I had been doing and started working on improving it a few years ago mostly as a result of my need for an outlet and excessive exposure to Japanese anime. As for concepts, I still feel like I’m experimenting but for the most part I’m trying to represent a different aspect of femininity. I love re-examining and playing with the concept of the “cute girl.”

WHY DO YOU ART? I find art to be a therapeutic experience. Whenever I draw, it’s like a catharsis of sorts. I also enjoy the happiness that art can bring into other people’s lives.

Page 37: DR Issue 37

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 35

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? The art scene is really starting to come alive in Riyadh. I’ve noticed (with awe) some very talented people get the recognition they deserve and it makes me really happy. I’d love there to be more social events and conventions for and about Saudi artists, where artists can get together and share their work.

Who are your role models?Definitely Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Ghibli Studies, whose eccentric heartwarming movies continue to bring me so much joy and inspiration even after watching them 900 times. Also, my mother and grandmother.

What does being creative mean to you?Being creative for me entails the ability to turn something mundane and boring into something interesting and worth admiring or looking at.

Favorite piece of artwork by someone else?Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night.

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why?My favorite drawings are of Sailor Moon’s main character, Usagi. I go back to drawing her every once in a while and now I have a sort of series. I think those drawings best represent the changes in my style over time.

task which at first would seem rather difficult considering the private nature of super car owners in the city.

However, this did not deter Naif. On his last year at Al Faisal University, he decided to organize the first Cars and Coffee event, with Shell as the official sponsor.

Cars and Coffee is one of the most famous auto meet ups happening in different cities around the world, where enthusiasts gather

to show their most prized machines and build a sense of camaraderie among owners.

What makes Cars and Coffee a bit different in KSA though is the level of exclusivity it now entails. It has also given birth to Superior Automotive, a company founded by Naif, that aims to create events for super car enthusiasts, including cross-city and country road trips and visits to the best auto factories in the world.

One such visit was to the McLaren headquarters, Naif’s favorite brand. At some point, he wanted to be a professional racer and even took international courses towards a career in F1 racing. While he has changed his direction, he remains enthralled by the experience of being behind the wheel and on the road.

and have it driven only once a year. I respect the science, the engineering behind the machine. I want to ride it, to experience its power.”

Off the road, Naif also has a room of die-cast collectibles, (miniature versions that are exact replicas of their real-life counterparts). This collection alone speaks volumes of how enthusiasts take their hobbies as a way of life—it is also telling of Naif’s love of innovation and ingenuity.

Apart from being a gearhead, Naif is deeply involved in fostering advanced technology in the Kingdom. He worked for three years at Aramco and wants to create an impact in the

MARCH IS FOR GIORDANOTwenty-one years and counting.

March is a special month for Giordano, one of the top clothing brands operating 100 stores across KSA. It is the month Giordano inaugurated their first shop at Al Faisalia Mall in downtown Jeddah. It had been 21 years since then, and the organization’s exponential growth continues to be remarkable. “Giving it back” or “paying it forward” was the brand’s way of

marking their 10th and 15th year of operation in the Kingdom. As a way of showing gratitude to the country, charity events supporting the children of Disabled Children Association were the main focus. Last year the brand celebrated its 20th anniversary by recognizing 20 loyal customers and employees. A fashion show was organized and modeled by company staff.

Get Your Glow Back

Face oils are not restricted to those suffering from extremely dry skin. It’s one of the best ways to get supple skin and the highly coveted dewy look.

Whether you go for grapeseed, coconut, jojoba, argan or almond oil; keep in mind that they vary in texture and richness. Test and trial, and inspect results.

Clarins offers three kinds of face oils: lotus (combination to oily skin), blue orchid (normal skin) and santal (very dry skin). Use according to your skin type, as these rebalancing oils are made from pure plant extracts.

readies your palate for the next set of flavors.

For the main entrée, prepare to feel indulged. You’ll get to choose from a fine selection of meat, chicken and seafood. There are four cooking styles to enjoy, our own pick is the Coq Au Vine made with fine grape juice infused with herbs, spices and mushrooms. It has a distinct flavor that goes well with any protein of your choosing.

Last but definitely not the least, dessert! Chocolate Fondue.

Need we really say more? Purists will fall in love with any of the melted milk, dark or white chocolate and if you’re looking for a twist, try out their decadent raspberry dark or the original, with its swirl of peanut butter.

There’s no doubt that soon enough, everyone will be saying, “fondue? Don’t mind if we do.”

SHAWARMA-RAMAA roundup of Riyadh’s favorite meaty treatBy Duha AlHosainy and Norah Alwalan

There is much debate about the “perfect” or “best” shawarma. We did not dare go after that daunting and, in my opinion, almost impossible mission. Instead, we decided to rate different popular shawarma restaurants based on a criteria. We also ordered the most popular order at each restaurant, according to the staff. Rating is out of 10 based on flavor, quality of the bread, and overall happiness.

Vitamin D3 Supplements Aimed at Combating DeficiencyThe sun is now in your hands.

DO SOMETHING!• Take vitamin D test.• Consult your doctor or pharmacist.• Learn about the different dosage forms of Vitamin D.

Stay healthy and get some sun!

The Prevalent ProblemAccording to a research carried out by King Saud University, vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. Although Saudi Arabia is one of the sunniest countries, vitamin D deficiency has been a predominant problem among the population. What Vitamin D DoesBiologically, vitamin D basically helps make healthy bones. It also aids the body to fight infections and protect itself against the development of different types of cancer including colorectal cancer and breast cancer. How is it Made?Vitamin D3 is specifically made within the skin through the exposure of ultraviolet light B of the sun, or from specific food intake such as eggs, liver, fishy oils, fortified milk and cereals.

This shows that the shortage of both

sufficient protein food intake and sunlight can create a deficiency that

is only solvable through supplements.

A study that was carried out in November

2009 on medical students in Dammam, showed

100 % deficiency in the vitamin D level.

A study carried out in 2015 showed that

84 % of Saudi women had the

deficiency due to lack of sunlight exposure

during the day.

So you’ve decided you want to join a group workout class instead of your normal routines, but you are a bit nervous on how the class will be and whether or not you would be able to catch up with the rest? Well there’s nothing to be nervous about, we’ve all been there. Here are some tips to help you ease through your first couple of classes.

You can do it! Just follow these tips.

Surviving Your First Workout Class

RESEARCHFirst of all take some time to research a bit about the class. For example, the class is boot camp. Find out the fitness level required to enter the class, ask the gym/instructor if it’s a private training center, ask for more info on what types of boot camps they are running; will it include weights, is it outdoors, etc. Knowing what you are getting yourself into will help you feel more at ease.

GO EARLYBe there before the scheduled time. This will give you time to speak to the instructor and introduce yourself; also you can mention any difficulties or injuries you have or ask them any questions. Going early can also give you a chance to mingle and ask other members about their thoughts of the class.

DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!A general rule of advice would be to not compare yourself to anyone else. If you feel that you have overworked yourself or are really tired, do not look at the person next to you and try to compete. If you need a break then give yourself a break, you are just getting started.

Caffeine-free treats to fuel and sustain you.

But First… CAFFEINE

Bananas are a great source of healthy carbs and potassium; important for hydration, thus an energy booster. The nut butter is a healthy combo of fat and protein, and the cacao gives you that chocolatey flavor.

1Apples are known to be quick energy fixes because of their natural carbs and sugar. Cinnamon can be sprinkled to stabilize blood sugar, and almonds (healthy fat) which will prolong your satisfaction and make you fuller.

To all coffee lovers out there who need a morning dose of coffee to function, did you know you can actually replace that caffeine with different food combinations that still give you the energy you need for your day? According to Ashley Koff, RD, a dietitian

A few years ago, a National Geographic project identified five places with populations with the highest life expectancy: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; Ikaria, Greece and Nicoya, Costa Rica.

The diet and lifestyle patterns of these populations were extensively researched and consequently found to be among the healthiest diets: low in calories and rich in antioxidants, fibers, omega 3, 6 polyunsaturated acids, polyphenols and flavonoids.

Considering the low level of physical

Many parents get frustrated at mealtimes, with their children refusing to eat most of their food, but there are simple steps you can take to overcome this.

Focus on Yourself Parents often surrender to their child’s wants to avoid a mealtime tantrum… It’s a trap! There are some steps to help you improve your attitude towards food.

1

Respect Your Child’s Opinion Don’t force-feed a child who claims to

be full or not hungry; it undermines his/her sense of hunger or satiety. Children’s

palates are very sensitive, so maybe your child simply doesn’t like the food.

Be Patient and Persistent Food rejection is a natural part of child development. Children need repeated

exposure to the same food before they’re willing to taste it.

Be a Role Model Your children will eat what

they see you eat.

Tired of mealtime tantrums and tears? Worry no more!

10 STEPSTO GET YOUR PICKY EATER TO EAT HEALTHY

By making small and steady changes, you can promote

healthy eating habits which your child can carry

throughout his/her life.

2 Establish a RoutinePicky eaters snack throughout the day, thus getting full before meals. Prevent this by scheduling meals and snacks.

FRIDAYMarch 18

6 Be Creative

Serve Attractive Food Cut shapes, mix colors and

include sliced vegetables with their

favorite dip.

Know Their Preferences

Crunchiness/smoothness, saltiness/sweetness,

and try to modify food texture accordingly.

Shift Focus to Something Other Than

the Food’s Taste Its color, shape

or texture.

7 Seek Help From a FriendA study by Dr. Helen Hendy found that preschoolers were more likely to try mango when another classmate tried it.

8 Minimize DistractionThe whole family should be seated at the table for meals, with eating being the sole focus.

Avoid Food RewardsChildren should identify food as fuel, not reward. Rewarding with specific foods (like chocolate) leads to poor eating habits. Your child may associate eating with achievement or stress relief rather than hunger.

9

10 Don’t Buy Unhealthy FoodsEven if your child asks for it!

3 Start Small• Introduce new foods in tiny portions (1/2tsp).• Introduce during snack time; the child who refuses to eat will be hungry by the next meal and will eat anything.

4 Subtly Introduce New Foods• If your child likes rice, try shredding new vegetables over it or add small pieces of broccoli over spaghetti.• Always taste a meal first; make sure it’s appetizing.

5 Involve Your ChildAsk your child to help with selecting and preparing food.

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those in His proximity.” (Sahih Muslim)

2. Countless Rewards for its Recitation

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (Al Tirmidhi)

3. Raise in the Ranks

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “One who was devoted to the Qur'an will be told to recite, ascend and recite carefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, for he will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse he recites.” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

The Qur’an, the speech of Allah, which was revealed to the Last Messenger in the Arabic language through Angel Jibreel, is a source of ultimate guidance for mankind. We learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) many virtues for reciting the Qur’an with a pure intention.

ANDALUSIA The Cradle of European Civilization?

Greece and Italy are often cited as the cradles of modern western civilization, where we get notions of democracy, academia and more. However, an increasing number of people are starting to question this notion and instead are appreciating the significance of the Muslim period in Spain Al Andalus (711-1492). A time when culture, civilization, academia and society peaked, it even included periods of amazing inter-faith tolerance. Could it be that in fact Spain is the real cradle of European civilization?

In this journey through two of the key cities of Muslim Spain, Cordoba, the Umayyad

Caliphate’s capital; and Granada, where it all came to an end, we will offer a glimpse of Al Andalus through its most important and charming remnants.

CORDOBA Whilst tourists head to Granada, connoisseurs come to Cordoba. “Europe was darkened at sunset, Cordoba shone with public lamps; Europe was dirty, Cordoba built a thousand baths … Europe lay in mud, Cordoba’s streets were paved … Europe’s nobility could not sign its name, Cordoba’s children went to school; Europe’s monks could not read the baptismal service, Cordoba’s teachers created a library of Alexandrian Cordoba from Watch Tower

dimensions.” Twentieth century author and physician, Victor Robinson, perfectly sums up why this city is believed to have inspired one of Europe’s most enlightened epochs (the 8th - 11th century).

MEZQUITA-CATHEDRALThe importance and majestic beauty of what was the Great Mosque of Cordoba is difficult to overstate; the only remaining direct link to Abd Al Rahman I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who fled Syria to avoid being murdered like the rest of the Umayyads. Modeled on his ancestral mosque in Damascus, this remarkable architectural

achievement was designed to appear like a forest of palms, allowing light to flood in and the praying spirit to soar. Opened in 785 AD, on the site of the Church of St. Vincent, which Abd Al Rahman had bought, today it is again a Christian place of worship. That was irreversibly sealed in the 16th century, when the center of the mosque was ripped out and replaced with a cathedral. Fortunately, the stunning scallop-shaped mihrabs remain. MeetingsMADINAT AL ZAHRAIt may have lasted a mere 30 years, but this palace city was built by Abd Al Rahman III in the 10th century to make a statement. He had declared himself Caliph of Islam - the only time a caliphate was declared in Europe. Madinat Al Zahra took 10,000 laborers setting 6,000 stone blocks a day for 40 years to complete, and was completely sacked by Al Mohads. This is why today, at times it can seem like an uninspiring pile of rocks, somewhat compensated by the impressively new museum built into the ground, which contains interesting exhibits and an auditorium showing what the opulent palace city would’ve looked like in its brief heyday.

GRANADAOn Jan. 2, 1492, the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, King and Queen of Castile and Aragon stood at the foot of a steep canopied pathway leading up to the palace city of Alhambra, perched on the edge of a large hilltop overlooking the city of Granada.

Dressed in Arab finery, the royals made the ceremonial walk to the top and entered the fort-like palace. Inside, Abu Abdullah Muhammad XII, the last Nasrid king (later known as Boabdil), was waiting for them, the key to his ancestral home, in his hand. As it was passed over, in what

was essentially a token gesture since the terms of surrender had been agreed months before, this signaled the end of nearly 800 years of Muslim and Jewish presence in the country.

THE ALHAMBRAOnce you have visited the Alhambra, you will spend your whole life yearning to go back. As the narrative says, this was merely home to the last ‘petty’ Muslim ruler of Al Andalus. By then, the ‘dreamy’ culture of Al Andalus, so significant in Europe’s development, was long gone. However the Alhambra does have a phenomenal knack

MEZQUITA MAYOR DE GRANADAIn 2003, this became Granada’s first purpose-built mosque in over 500 years. The site offers magnificent views of the Alhambra and it is the best place to meet some of the region’s 250,000 or so modern Muslims - mainly reverts and recent immigrants.

Following the stream leading to the water.

While many disbelieve the chances of there being natural springs in KSA, much to their astonishment there is at least one known spring in the country.

In fact, some local water companies boast of their water being sourced from natural springs. The specialty about the springs at Al Lith is that they are natural hot springs, something one would expect to find only in places like Europe or Japan.

On the Trail of a

Natural Hot Water SpringBy Mohammed Mirza

The JourneyThe ride to the town of Al Lith from Jeddah was an easy one for us as it is located on the major Jeddah-Jizan Highway. This same highway goes all the way to Yemen as well.

Once at Al Lith we knew that we wouldn’t be left with many options for food, so we decided to eat at a massive

Although they are commonly referred to as Al Lith Hot Springs, the spring is not actually in the town of Al Lith - it is situated around 50 kilometers from there. Close but not quite there.

food court in the main city. The place we stopped at has a plethora of restaurants and sits right on the main highway. It is also a popular stopover for buses carrying travelers to the southern parts of the Kingdom.

We had what Al Lith is known for – seafood. As expected it was tasty enough, despite its lack of spices.

We got off the highway and headed onto an adjacent single lane road. This road goes all the way to the hot spring, running through a number of small villages on the way. There were just two signboards on this road, which confirmed that we were heading in the right direction.

The road itself was flanked by small trees, and right before we reached the spring, the greenery in the surroundings seemed to increase.

A final signboard marked the location and from there the springs were a stone’s throw away. We parked our cars and walked towards the water.

On the Trail of a StreamThere were multiple streams gushing from the spring. We put our hands in the nearest one to us and much to our surprise it was refreshingly cold.

We couldn’t see where these streams started. We walked over them until we came across the biggest one. At that time we were told by a passerby that the hot spring was to the east of us. We decided to visit the hot springs later and explore the stream in front of us that meandered its way calmly into the unknown. Here it felt like we were in the middle of a tropical rainforest with all the lush green trees and luxuriant grass that surrounded us. The stream was flowing from the north and we walked by it towards its source.

I found it to be quite similar to a previous hiking experience I had in the jungles of Kodaikanal in India. The place felt so tranquil; a spot where one could just lie down, hear the birds chirp and listen to the pleasant sound of the flowing stream.

We continued walking, with the stream at times getting knee-high. There were areas where we barely made it through because of the thorny plants that blocked the way. We continued till we could go no further and by then the stream had gotten visibly smaller. Nearby was a place where the dense forest opened up into a desert that had a beautiful backdrop of chestnut-colored mountains.

Luxuriant grass greets us.

At the Hot SpringsWe then went on to where the hot springs were. From a distance we could see groups of people just standing by it and staring deeply into it. Some were even seen filling big plastic bottles with

earth’s mantle. They are normally found in volcanic regions. In KSA, this hot spring near Al Lith is the only known one in the country so far.

However, this hot spring has higher than bathing temperatures, so hot in fact that we couldn’t place our hands in it for more than a second; perhaps just enough to get our feet and hands cleaned by quick taps on the water. The hot springs were muddy and had algae growing in it, which is surprising considering its high temperatures.

On the whole, we were left in awe by the experience, as it was the first time for us to see one in real life. But what we enjoyed more than that was the trail of the stream that we followed. Definitely a place worth visiting.

The history of Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm.By Mohammed Mirza

The Mysterious Wells of Al Kharj

These wells have been used by the residents of Al Kharj and travelers for centuries, but of late the wells have dried up; though some amount of water can be seen in them after it rains.

While the exact time of the formation of these wells is not known, records show the area near the wells to have been inhabited for over a millennium.

Located less than a kilometer apart, two huge natural wells known as Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm are one of the biggest attractions of Al Kharj, less than an hour drive from Riyadh.

While some believe that they had been formed by a meteor shower, others disagree and suggest that they are actually massive sinkholes; sinkholes so deep that they have reached the watery beds within the earth’s crust.

Recently, the wells have been fenced off but it still hasn’t deterred visitors.

When the peninsula used to struggle for drinking water, Al Kharj had plenty of it, boasting of date farms and pastures that were unseen in the region. This oasis in the desert did not only have these wells as part of its water supply, it was also blessed with a network of ponds and natural aquifers. Considering its rich past abundant with water, an iconic water tower was constructed in the city that even has a revolving restaurant inside it.SO
