Senior Recognition Night is a vir tual presentation which
will be posted on our school 'YouTube' channel in an

Underclassmen
Their last day of school will be Fr iday, June 12th. We also
will be allowing underclassmen to come into the
building to turn in athletic uniforms, return library
books, clean out lockers etc. on June 11th and 12th. We
will be emailing all students more information
regarding the details soon. Underclassmen are being
allowed to keep their chrome books over the summer,
but if prefer red, they may be returned to the school for
safe keeping.
GoodbyeTwenty two years ago this summer, my br ide and I
moved our family to Woodland to begin our new
adventure in a new town, make new fr iends, raise our
family and live the "Amer ican Dream!"
Our time here has been filled with wonderful
memor ies, stor ies, some hardships, but ultimately a
wonderful exper ience. As most of you know, my boys
have now all left the area and it is time for Debbie and I
to begin our next adventure. We will be moving to Reno,
Nevada at the end of this month and our plan is to call
this our retirement town. We are not quite ready to
officially retire yet, but hopefully soon.
We leave Woodland with full hear ts and nothing but joy
for our time here. It is just now time for a new voice to
be heard in the hallways of Woodland High School and I
am excited and confident in the selection of the new
pr incipal, Dr. Phil Pearson.
I will always have an eye on the happenings of
Woodland, and specifically Woodland High School. I am
proud of our work here and the amazing students that I
have had the pr ivilege of working with, from my first
graduating class in 1999 to my last in 2020.
Thank you for trusting me all these many years as the
pr incipal of this fine high school and that I leave
knowing the school is going to be just fine as I leave
because of all the amazing staff members who will
continue our good work. Best wishes...and
Goodbye...John Shoup.

COLLEGE PLANNING TIMELINES FOR JUNE
Juniors: In June, college-bound juniors are advised to do the following:
1. Check Skyward and make sure you are taking the correct college-bound classes for next year. Email your counselor if you have any questions.
2. Work on your career/ college resume. Email Mrs. Sturdivan or your counselor with any questions.
3. Email your counselor and Mrs. Sturdivan about Scholarships, Cascadia Tech, and Running Start.
4. Check the CollegeBoard.org and ACT.org websites for updates regarding SAT and ACT testing dates.
5. Explore the US Gov site: https:/ / studentaid.ed.gov/ to f ind resources for federal aid, college planning and f inancial aid.
Seniors: Please read the information below from the Washington Student Achievement Council. Colleges Adjust Requirements and Deadlines in Response to COVID-19:
1. In the face of COVID-19, Washington?s colleges and universit ies are being f lexible about course requirements, test scores, deadlines, and more. Contact admissions off ices directly if you have special circumstances or questions about how to meet requirements and deadlines during COVID-19.
2. Some colleges are modifying admissions requirements:
a. Many colleges have extended the deadline to off icially decide where you plan to enroll. Many have also extended the deadline to make deposits.
3. Some campuses have gone test-optional, meaning you do not have to submit scores from standardized tests like SAT and ACT.
4. If someone in your family has lost a job or is working less, colleges may be able to provide more f inancial aid.
a. If you?ve already f iled a 2020-21 FAFSA or WASFA, talk to the f inancial aid off ice about your situation.
b. If you haven?t applied for f inancial aid, it?s not too late. Submit your application, then follow up with the college.
5. Many colleges are offering virtual campus tours you can do online from home.
6. Remember, it?s not too late to apply! Many of Washington?s four-year public and private, not-for-prof it colleges and universit ies, are stil l accepting applications for Fall 2020.
COLLEGE ENTRANCE TESTING
Note: All accredited universit ies/ colleges will accept both SAT and ACT tests for admission. Take the test you feel most comfortable with!
SAT: Students must register for the SAT online, using this website: sat.org/ register. Woodland High School is a test site; the College Board stil l handles all registration online. Be sure to include WHS code: 481600, so we will receive your scores to place on your transcript for college and scholarship applications.
COVID-19 Updates regarding SAT and ACT: Check the CollegeBoard.org and ACT.org websites for updates regarding SAT and ACT testing dates.

CTE (Career & Technical Educat ion) & Clubs
This year, due to COVID-19, Washington FBLA held a virtual State Conference.
Our Woodland FBLA students did absolutely amazing and here are the results:
- 5th Place in Entrepreneurship (team event) - Aaron Shaw, Aidan Brynes, Dillon McGhee
- 5th Place in Marketing (team event) - Aaron Shaw, Lucas Somers
It 's exciting that even though we are dealing with so much uncertainty, our FBLA students CHOOSE to stay dedicated to this club, work on their leadership and business skil ls, AND successfully make it to Nationals two years in a row! Congratulations to everyone!
Congratulations to the SkillsUSA team for placing 1st in State and receiving a Gold Medal as the State Chapter of Excellence. Our Chapter was then chosen as a Model of Excellence (one of 24 in the Nation). They will now go on to compete in Technical Skills with the goal of becoming the Top Chapter in the Nation.
Katelyn Paulson, Oliver Rosa, Nansi Valenzuela, and Caitl in Nelson are the team members that put in the work documenting all of our activit ies and how they align with the smart goals for each of our framework areas. Also congratulations to Caleb Mouat. He was just elected as one of our 2020/21 State Off icers.
We are so proud of Katelyn and Nansi for all of their hard work as this year's State Off icers. Please check out this promotional video they put together.
https:/ /www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_NnD6FysdE&feature=emb_logoA special congratulations to Adviser Kimberly Miller who received notif ication from the SkillsUSA State Director announcing that she was awarded the Adviser of the Year for Region 5 (Region 5 includes: Washington, Oregon, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and American Samoa). Kimberly will now proceed on to the National Finals competing for Adviser of the Year.
WHS Robot ics Team
The BeaverBots placed 48th out of 151 teams from around the world in a Robots to the Rescue contest sponsored by First Robotics and Onshape. The goal was to create a robot that could solve a world problem. The team designed a robot that is able to scoop up microplastics from beaches. They only had three weeks to plan, design, and build the robotic in a computer program called Onshape (which the team had never used before). The team created an alliance with another team from Virginia whose robot was also designed to pick up microplastics.
The team spent three days a week in long google meet video chats run by the awesome, most persistent, and encouraging Coach Stephanie Marshall. This persistence paid off as they also won The Awesome Aesthet ic Award for the most pleasing design. (The judges called them cute!)
Coaches Stephanie Marshall and Elizabeth Talvite are so proud of the team as they worked tirelessly around the clock and worked TOGETHER remotely and virtual ly to design this robot!
