Large tree had top broken off by winds.

Scattered severe thunderstorms developed during the early afternoon hours as an upper level disturbance interacted with a very

unstable atmosphere. The storms initially produced several reports of large hail during the afternoon across northeast Alabama. Later

in the afternoon and early evening, the storms became damaging wind producers with sporadic hail. One well defined bow echo

produced widespread wind damage in northwest Alabama. A 59 mph wind gust was measured at the northwest Alabama regional

airport in Muscle Shoals (MSL). The large gust front spanning from southern Tennessee through northwest Alabama swept across

most of northern Alabama, spawning new strong storms further east. The gust front produced 40 to 50 mph winds, also causing

sporadic damage in north central and northeast Alabama. One person was struck by lightning in Limestone County, but the extent of

their injury was unknown.

Storm Data and Unusual Weather Phenomena - June 2011

A severe mesoscale convective system (MCS) that originated in central Kansas on the 17th progressed east and southeast into the

Tennessee Valley during the afternoon of the 18th. Several small scale bow echoes produced the strongest wind damage, while a

larger scale gust front produced widespread sub-severe winds of 30 to 50 mph. These winds still knocked large tree limbs and small

trees down. Power was knocked out for about 12,000 utility customers in Madison County. Heavier damage occurred in northern

Jackson County where numerous trees and power line were knocked down.

Small tree limbs were knocked down.

A long-lived mesoscale convective system which originated in the lower Missouri Valley during the early morning of the 26th, tracked

south-southeast into the Tennessee Valley during the afternoon hours. The storms fed upon a moist and unstable airmass across the

region. An earlier outflow boundary also had pushed into the area during the morning, serving as a secondary focus mechanism for

additional thunderstorms and storm mergers. A gust front emerged from the storms during the afternoon, producing widespread

gusty winds of 30 to 50 mph, with winds exceeding 60 mph in many locations, resulting in numerous reports of wind damage.

Numerous trees were knocked down onto power lines, resulting in loss of power, especially across Franklin and Cullman Counties. In

Cullman County, widespread wind damage was reported, with trees down across many locations. In addition, a barn was destroyed

and blown onto an adjacent roadway, and a couple of metal porch rooftops were torn off.

Heavy Rain06/28/11 10:50 CST

06/28/11 10:50 CST Source: CoCoRaHS

Rainfal of 4.65 inches was reported in four hours at a location 6.6 miles west southwest of Cloverdale.

A quasi-linear convective system dropped south from Tennessee into northern Alabama just after sunrise. The storms dumped very

heavy rainfall in far northwest Alabama as a secondary system moved east and merged with the southward moving system. This

enabled some areas to receive rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches in portions of Lauderdale and Colbert Counties. Flash flooding resulted

at many notorious low water crossings and poor drainage locations in urban areas of the Quad Cities. In addition, the lines of storms

produced damaging winds of 50 to 60 mph.
