Assalam-o-Alaikum Hope you are doing well. This issue has got a cover story related to speed reading. Speed reading involves using several techniques to process text fast. The cover story would help boost your brainpower with speed reading techniques as well. There are many benefits of speed reading and you will know in the article as you read it. There are several apps for speed reading but it is recommended to use the books instead of a screen and also use the techniques which are used with the books to help increase the speed of reading. Idioms are included on the topic of school and education. The idioms published every month are just derived from the terminology of the selected topic, and they can be used in everyday situations.Other segments are included as usual but you will see a whole page dedicated to tongue twisters in this issue. Tongue twisters are adored by our readers so much and hopefully, there would be more challenging tongue twisters included in the next issues. The story of the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic would be interesting to read. We are looking forward to having your suggestions and feedback through emails and social media pages.

Determined as always, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was not setback by initial failures. When Allah commanded him to deliver the message of Islam openly to his kinsmen, he invited his family and called them openly to surrender to the will of Allah. Important aspects of the feast were: Islam was no more a secret. It was public. It had surfaced to the city of Makkah. Secondly, it sparked a mission and there was no turning back. Thirdly, it highlighted the figure of Ali ibn Abi Talib who was a child, nevertheless revealed a steadfast and committed follower of Islam. The family men did not pay heed to the noble call. Some laughed at him and took it as a joke or considered it a new passion of Muhammad (PBUH). Only the handful of his followers knew what he meant and was ready to do.Time had come to deliver the message to the Quresh of Makkah, beyond his family. Thus, it is reported that some days later after the feast, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) climbed the hill of Safa near Ka’ba, and called the local people.“O sons of Fehr, O sons of Loi, O sons of Adi, and all the rest of Quraysh! Come hither, and listen to me. I have something very important to tell you.”Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a highly respected man in the society. His deed had gained him blind trust of the people. Local Makkans knew this man must be having something wise to say. He would not waste their time. In no time a crowd gathered at the

foot of the hill. Curious faces looked up at him.He (PBUH) began his address: “Will you believe me if I were to tell you that an army was hidden behind yonder hills and was watching for attack you as soon as it found you off-guard?”The crowd said they would believe him because he had never told a lie in his life.“If that’s so,” said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), “then listen to this with attention. The Lord of the heavens and earth has commanded me to warn you of the dreadful time that is coming. But if you pay heed, you can save yourselves from perdition...”Abu Lahab, who was present among the listeners, interrupted him here: “Death to you. Did you waste our time to tell us only this? We do not want to hear from you. Do not call us again.”People dispersed and they didn’t listen ahead. Many were scared of Abu Lahab as he was a notable and aggressive Qureshi. So they did not intend to raise his anger against themselves. From then onwards, Abu Lahab followed our prophet (PBUH) like a shadow. He interrupted and taunted the prophet (PBUH) while preaching or reciting the Quran. He lost no chance of jeering at the prophet (PBUH). But against all odds, the mission continued. The staunch faith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) could not be shattered by any failure. His devoted followers also kept their circle close to him and firmly stood by their new faith.

A backbiter friend I have a friend but she backbites a lot. She keeps feeding bad info to my class teacher. I am really worried. Help! (Maryam Hussain, Islamabad, Pakistan)

Dear Maryam,If you know she talks about you with your class teacher which you don’t like then simply you can stop your friendship with her. When there will be no communications between you and her then there will be no spreading of talk about you. Forgive her and do not take any revenge. Do not worry. Everything would be alright soon.

When Detective Rameez reached the scene of the fatal hunting accident, he found Officer Waqas already there. “The dead man is Shahid Ahmed,” said the officer. “He and his partner, Raza Riaz, had been afield two hours when the tragedy struck. Raza states he missed a shot at a buck, and the bullet pierced Shahid’s left temple.” Detective Rameez stooped by the body, which lay face downward, about ten feet from a low thicket. One hand still clutched a rifle. The wound, though messy, was clearly visible, as Shahid was hatless. “I guess I was overanxious,” Raza Riaz said remorsefully. “Shahid and I hunted together last year, and we bagged our limit by the second day. But we’d gone four days without a shot before we spotted this big buck. “He was lying asleep in that little thicket,” continued Raza. “It was Shahid’s turn – we always agree on who shoots first. I sneaked in closer, believing Shahid was right behind me. But he must have crept in on the far side of the thicket. “Well, the buck sensed us, because he suddenly rose to his forelegs. Then his rump came up, and Shahid still didn’t fire. The buck was ready to bolt, and I knew I’d have to shoot first or lose the big fellow. I missed – and hit poor Shahid.” “Didn’t Shahid wear a red hunting cap?” asked Detective Rameez. Raza Riaz looked surprised. “Yes. . . He must have lost it in the woods someplace.” Thanking the distraught hunter, Detective Rameez returned to the officer. “I’d check into the firm of Raza Riaz and Shahid Ahmed,” he advised. “I’ve a strong suspicion Raza Riaz had

good reason to kill his partner.” “You mean Raza Riaz has killed his partner Shahid Ahmed? Any clue about that?” Officer Waqas was anxious to know the evidence.“Well, I heard his story but somewhere he made a mistake. I can say that his story is clearly an invention.” Detective Rameez said quite confidently.“How does he make up that? Officer Waqas was still unknown what detective wanted to say.“Raza Riaz said the buck rose first on his forelegs. Unfortunately for him, a deer gets off the ground hind-end first. I hope this clue can lead us to the final decision that he murdered his partner Shahid Ahmed.” Detective Rameez concluded with a sigh.

Watching sportsI am fond of watching football whereas my brother who is two years older than me, watches cricket and I do not like it. How I keep TV remote with me because mostly he grabs it with force and beats me too. (Zaid Siddiqui, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)

Dear Zaid,He does not allow you to watch TV? Ask your mother if she can help you. When we live together we should respect what others like and dislike. Cricket match lasts longer so he should let you see football match. However, you both are not supposed to waste your time on sports so much. Put a strict time table for TV watching hours and avoid watching sports as much as you can.

What Is Speed Reading?Speed reading involves using a number of techniques to process text fast. These include skimming, scanning, and reducing subvocalization. There is a wealth of training material available on the subject.Benefits Of Speed ReadingYou may think that reading should be for pleasure, and you would be right. But there are times when it’s necessary to process a lot of text. If you’re not convinced, we share the other benefits of speed reading.

Speed reading is empoweringYes, not only does the use of these techniques speed up your reading, but it also gives you power. It enables you quick access to facts, which you can turn into knowledge in a snap.

Improved memoryThe brain is an organ, and it has muscles like other parts of the body. If we train it, it gains strength and performs better than before. Training our brains to retain information quickly also improves other cognitive functions, such as memory.

Speed reading improves focusConcentrating on specific words and ideas enables better concentration and absorption of the content of a text.

Improves confidenceSpeed reading gives you an edge in almost any

area of life.

Relieves stressReading the conventional way is slow, so it causes us to multi-task to get more work done. Doing this results in overall inefficiency. Speed reading is quick, efficient, and meditative. In short, it reduces stress.

Enhanced creativityIndustry leaders in any field must innovate, so it isn’t surprising how busy they must be. They must use speed reading techniques frequently to cross-pollinate ideas. So speed reading may lead you to your next brilliant idea.7 Speed Reading Techniques To Learn That Will Also Boost Your Brain PowerThe average person reads about 200 to 250 words per minute. There’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to double or even triple that speed. By using these techniques, you will be able to finish going through all the unread books on your bookshelf in no time at all.

1. Read the Table of ContentsWhat do most people do when they read a book? Groan as they turn the first page, knowing that they have a few hundred more to go. They spend more time than they should reading because they pore over the book page by page.Instead, one should go over the table of contents and chapter summaries first. These usually capture the main ideas of the book, which are

what the author wants you to know in the first place. By reading them, your brain will try to spot them as you read subconsciously.

2. Don’t SubvocalizeSubvocalization means reading the words of a text out to yourself. Some people do this because it raises their awareness of the words, but it slows reading speed down dramatically. Some successful speed readers chew gum to prevent themselves from doing this.

3. Force your eye to move across the pageUsing your pen or finger to guide your eye across a page of text, a technique known as Meta Guiding, is one of the essential aspects of speed reading. Most people fall victim to Visual Regression. What happens during the process? The eye moves backwards when reading sentences and goes over words that they’ve read before. When you use a pen to move over text, your eye moves forward with it. It doesn’t travel uncontrollably all over the page, and you’ll focus on the words in front of you.

4. View groups of wordsYou would view groups of words for clues to the main ideas of a book or article. Reading experts call this technique skimming. When you look at a phrase, e.g., “Statue of Liberty,” several times, your brain becomes acclimatized to seeing the words as a group. Your reading speed increases because you’re not looking at words individually. You’ll also get an understanding of the content you’re reading.

5. Read the first and last sentences of a paragraphAnother technique is scanning, which involves going over paragraphs quickly to identify facts. The way to do this to read the first and last sentence of a paragraph, but scan through the middle of it quickly. The first sentence tells you what it’s going to be about while the last summarizes it.You’d probably get the gist of a paragraph if

you just read the first and last sentences. Of course, words in the middle may be vital to your knowledge of the text, in which case you’d apply the other techniques of fast reading.

6. Read faster than you believe is possibleIf you read faster than you think you can, you’d probably end up doing so. Your goal is to pore through text quicker than you’ve done before, so you’d first have to know your present reading speed. Your goal is to go beyond it.So, using speed reading techniques allows you to process lots of text quickly and gives you an edge. Try those suggested above and find yourself accumulating more information than you did before. Also, find some speed-reading apps and install them in your device but don’t use the screen frequently as books are a better source for speed reading and eyes safety should be considered more while using screen.

Nicknamed “Algiers the White” for its shiny white buildings, Algiers is the capital city for People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. It is the political,

economic, and cultural centre of the country

The IslandsAlgiers is built on the slopes of the Sahel Hills, which parallel the Mediterranean Sea coast, and it extends for some 10 miles along the Bay of Algiers. The city faces east and north and forms a large amphitheatre of dazzling white buildings that dominate the harbour and the bay. The city takes its name “The Islands” (Arabic: Al-Jazair) from several small islands that formerly existed in the bay, all but one of which have been connected to the shore or obliterated by harbour works.

History Algiers was founded by the Phoenicians as one of their numerous North African colonies. It was known to the Carthaginians and the Romans as Icosium. In the early 16th century, many of the Muslims and Jews expelled from Spain sought asylum in Algiers. In 1514, Spain fortified the offshore island of Peñon (read as “Penyon”) in the Bay of Algiers. The emir of Algiers appealed to

Ottoman Turkish to expel the Spaniards from the Peñon. Khayr al-Din Barbarossa seized Algiers and expelled the Spaniards in 1529. French captured the city in 1830. During World War II (1939–45), Algiers became the headquarters of Allied forces in North Africa. In the 1950s, when the Algerian uprising against France began, the capital city was a focal point in the struggle.

Chief seaportThe main exports are vegetables, oranges, iron ore, and phosphates. It remains chiefly a port for the import of raw materials, industrial goods, and general supplies.

Buildings and places Situated in the modern city centre are the University of Algiers and numerous foreign embassies and a small but growing number of skyscrapers. Other sites include the modern building of the National Library, the old palace of

the archbishop, and the Winter Palace (formerly the palace of the French governor-general).

Colonial cruelty Native Algerians were excluded from the benefits of Algiers’ development and increasing commercial wealth by a system of de facto segregation that prohibited them from entering European settlers’ public spaces and confined them to a few poor neighbourhoods.

IndustrializationA state-led industrialization program that lasted from 1971 to 1985 provided Algiers with factories for mechanical and electrical machinery, processed agricultural goods, building materials, textiles, wood, and paper.

Interesting Facts The old Turkish, or Muslim, section of Algiers

is built on the upper slopes of the hills and has preserved much of its architectural character of high blank-walled houses and narrow winding streets.

Under French colonial rule, many theatres, museums, and public gardens were made.

Algeria’s official language is Arabic. The people speak Arabic, Berber (called Tamazight and Amazigh) or French. Algerian Arabic (called darja) is spoken by well over half the population as well.

The national animal of Algeria is the Fennec Fox (is the smallest of all the world’s foxes) and their national football team (soccer) is named after the animal: “Les Fennecs”.

Dating back to 1097, the Great Mosque of Algiers is the oldest in the city. It is one of the world’s few remaining examples of Almoravid architecture.

Hyder Ali Khan was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India. He spoke Kannada, Telugu, Hindustani, Persian, Marathi and Tamil fluently. He was a shrewd leader, and left his eldest son Tipu Sultan an extensive kingdom bordered by the Krishna River in the north, the Eastern Ghats in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. He fought bravely against the British invaders.

More people have probably died from malaria over the last several thousand years than from any other disease that you can catch. Malaria parasites probably first began to infect reptiles in West Africa and Central Africa, at least a hundred and fifty million years ago. Africa was warm and wet and so there were a lot of mosquitoes there.

About 1563 AD, some people in England called themselves “the godly”, but other people called them “Puritans.” Puritans wore plain clothes and lived in plain houses. Puritans did not have parties. They did not celebrate holidays, not even Christmas or Easter. Like other people who had different religious ideas – the Puritans got into trouble in England too. King Charles had some Puritans killed.

Red foxes live around the world in many diverse habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and

Biggest wingspan Albatross has big head with strong, hooked beak. Body of albatross is covered with white, black, brown, red or yellow feathers. Wandering albatross has a wingspan of 11 feet. This is the biggest wingspan in the world of birds. Most albatrosses are found in the Southern Hemisphere.

Surprising sense of smellSeabirds don’t usually get much credit for their olfactory skills. Nevertheless, many rely on scent to help track down prey; albatrosses can follow a mouth-watering aroma for over 12 miles.

Amazing flight techniqueAll albatrosses are very good at flying, spending much of their life in the air. Without a single wing flap, these birds can coast for several hundred miles—a remarkable feat that no other flying creature is capable of matching. On long trips, the big birds spend half of their time facing the wind and using it to fly upward. Then they’ll shift and dip back down towards the ocean, catching another

skyward draft moments later. By repeating this technique, they can cover enormous distances with very little effort.

EnemiesFledgling albatrosses can be an easy target on the ocean’s surface. Albatross does not have a lot of natural enemies. Besides humans, main predator is tiger shark which hunts young birds that are learning to fly.

DietAlbatrosses feed primarily on squid or schooling fish, but are familiar to mariners because they sometimes follow ships in hopes of dining on handouts or garbage. Albatrosses have a special place in maritime lore and superstition, most memorably evoked in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Interesting facts Albatross is diurnal animal (active during

the day). Since albatross mainly eats slippery prey,

beak has sharp blades on the side to prevent loss of the catch.

They also float on the sea’s surface, though the position makes them vulnerable to aquatic predators.

Albatrosses drink salt water, as do some other sea birds.

Rather than flapping their wings to provide lift as most birds do, they glide on air currents.

They can walk well on land, unlike other sea birds.

Wandering Albatrosses have a special gland above their nasal passage that excretes a high saline solution. This helps keep salt level in their body, combating all the salt water they take in.

Wandering Albatrosses get whiter the older they get.

You’ll need A small piece of wool fabric An aluminium pie pan Styrofoam plate A pencil with a new eraser One thumbtack

Steps to be taken1. Turn the aluminium pie pan upside-down and push the thumbtack through the centre.2. Push the eraser end of the pencil into the thumbtack. The pencil should be standing straight up.3. Put the Styrofoam plate upside-down on a table. Very quickly, rub the bottom of the Styrofoam plate with the wool for a minute or two.4. Pick up the aluminium pie pan using the pencil as a handle and place it on top of the upside-down Styrofoam plate that you were just rubbing with the wool.5. Touch the aluminium pie pan with your finger. You should feel a shock. If you don’t feel anything, try rubbing the Styrofoam plate again with the wool.6. Once you feel the shock, try turning the lights out before you touch the pan again.

How does it happen?Lighting is a powerful and dangerous example of static electricity. Lightning

happens when the negative charges, which are called electrons, in the bottom of the cloud (or in this experiment your finger) are attracted to the positive charges, which are called protons, in the ground or in this experiment the aluminium pie pan. The spark that you had seen is like a miniature lightning bolt!

What is static electricity? Static electricity is the build-up of an electrical charge on the surface of an object. It’s called “static” because the charges remain in one area for a while rather than moving or “flowing” to another area.

Where It Started? The history of this extreme sport goes way back to 1970 in California, USA. It was on Mount Tamalpais that made that mark of being the origin of mountain biking. The first prototype of mountain bikes were all downhill purposed. Meaning they never rode their bikes uphill, they had to transport them up to the starting point and ride them downhill.Do It All Yourself Because riders are often far from civilization, there is a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair their broken bikes or flat tires to avoid being stranded miles from help. Many riders will carry a backpack containing all the essential tools and equipment for trailside repairs, and many riders also carry emergency supplies in the case of injury miles from outside help.

Mountain Bike OrienteeringIt is an orienteering endurance racing sport on a mountain bike where navigation is done along trails and tracks. It adds the skill of map navigation to mountain biking. Have These On GoGloves, glasses, shoes, GPS navigation device, pump to inflate flat tires, water bottles, bike tools and extra bike tubes, high-power lights for mountain biking at night.Interesting Facts

The longest mountain bike race in the world was a ride from Canada to Mexico with 2700 miles over the continental divide in the Rockies.

Derailliuer is the device that changes your gears on a mountain bike.

Mountain Bikers use a term of Granny Gear when in the lowest gear on a bike. There’s no need to tell you why it’s called granny gear!

Mountain biking is the sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially designed mountain bikes. A mountain bike is for those with a nerve for adventure. It is light and

hence easy to carry and walk up or down a mountain, on difficult terrains

Have you ever rubbed your feet across carpet and then touched a metal door handle? If so, then you know that you can get shocked! Lightning works in the same way. Make your own

Early Life Jules Gabriel Verne was born in France in 1828. Living in a maritime port city and spending summers on the Loire River, Verne would closely observe the comings and goings of ships and schooners which developed his imagination for adventure and travelling. Jules had begun writing short stories and poetry while studying at boarding school.

Travelled to ParisAt 19 Verne went to Paris to become a lawyer, despite hoping to become a lawyer. His father cut off his son’s allowance when he discovered his story-writing. Verne turned to stock-broking to support himself.

NautilusHis submarine The Nautilus predated actual powered submarines by 25 years. In 1886, the first electric powered submarine was name The Nautilus after Verne’s creation.

Interesting Facts He hung out with both Victor Hugo and

Alexander Dumas, who gave him writing advice.

He actually travelled very little. His only time riding in a balloon lasted 24 minutes.

Verne has been one of the most translated authors in the world.

Work discovered after deathHe died on 24 March 1905 in Amiens, but one of his works would be published 84 years later, after his great-grandson discovered the manuscript for “Paris in the 20th Century” in a safe. Originally written in 1863 about a man living in a world of skyscrapers, high-speed trains, cars and calculators, his publisher had thought the story too pessimistic and refused to print it.

The French novelist Jules Verne was the first authentic writer of modern science

fiction. The best of his works, such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Centre of the Earth, are characterized by his intelligent foresight into the technical achievements that are within man’s grasp

Before Inspector Waqas could bellow a protest, Rufi had slipped into his office. “I got something this time,” the little informer insisted. “Last night I’m sleeping in this abandoned warehouse when I hear noises. A voice says, ‘Did you glim that piece on page 29 about Mrs. Talat?’ “There’s a hole in the floor,” continued Rufi. “I can see four tough eggs sitting in the room below. One of them picks up a

newspaper and turns to the back page and starts reading out loud. What he reads goes something like this: “The Noor collection of jewels has been purchased by Mrs. Talat Ahmed of 292 Sea Cliff Heights. Mrs. Talat told reporters she will keep the jewels, in her house, which she claims is burglar proof.” “The four guys begin to laugh,” Rufi went on. “One guy says, ‘Haris, make sure the car is running good, because tomorrow night we’re going to pay Mrs. Talat a quiet little visit.’” “There is no Sea Cliff Heights in this city,” said Inspector Waqas. He lifted a hand. Rufi remained unshaken. “They were probably reading an out-of-town paper. They’ll be back tonight. For ten bucks I’ll take you –”The inspector rose menacingly. “Five?” yelped Nick. “Five” growled the inspector, putting five bucks on the palm of his hands. The little informer left the room. Why wasn’t Rufi paid off?

“You’ve heard of Andrew Morgan?” Eric asked. “Nope,” said Simon. “I took him last December,” continued Eric. “Then we moved to the Arctic Observation Weather Station. I realized Andrew and I and the dogs would freeze to death unless I started a fire. Alas, we had used up all of our matches. I got out a small magnifying glass from our instrument kit and, tearing off sheets from our reports, laid them on a steel instrument box. By focusing the sun’s rays through the glass onto the paper, I started a hearty blaze. Fortunately, a rescue team picked us up after 24 hours. The team captain said I was a bit of a hero.” What was wrong with Andrew’s story?

Squirrel Facts It is estimated that millions of trees in

the world are accidentally planted by squirrels who bury nuts and then forget where they hid them!

Squirrels can’t see the colour red. The tail of a squirrel astonishingly serves

as a parachute and a balance. Even if it falls from a height of 100 feet, it would land on earth unhurt!

The collective name for a group of squirrels is a Scurry.

The squirrel often chews on electrical wires and hoses in order to sharpen their teeth.

In American grammar “squirreled” means to “have hidden items away”.

Squirrels are very adept swimmers, crossing lakes and rivers with ease.

with a scary cupboard? Let’s start from the beginning. My cousins, Anna and Ahmed had come from Australia and they were tired of a very long journey but excited enough for adventures with my brother Zain and I. We decided to go camping and stay there for a night. We went to a place near the scary jungle and built our tent. While we were eating, we argued that who was brave enough to go into the jungle. We decided to play hide and seek in the jungle. After a very long rumpus, I decided to give my turn and went behind a tall tree to count till 50. When I finished counting I turned my back and went to the jungle to find them. I heard strange voices of animals but I was fortunate enough to meet none of them. I was surrounded by repugnant trees. I kept going on like this when I saw some light. When I came nearer I saw a dirty old cottage being embraced by an old pine tree as it was hiding it from the rest of the world. I went inside and found the door unlocked. Suddenly, I heard some noise and it was the ticking of an old clock. It meant that someone had lived there. I started looking at the

cobwebbed cottage. I saw many spiders there and a strange cupboard which was continuously shaking. Suddenly the cupboard opened and there came who I have been finding. They were Anna, Ahmed and Zain. I was stunned by how a wonderful place they found for hiding. This game of “hide and seek” made our vacation a memorable one.

Retold by Mujtaba Khalid

In January 1919, Britain was filled with returned World War I servicemen looking for jobs. One of these was 33-year-old Arthur Brown, who had served as a navigator in the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force). He had been shot down and suffered a shattered leg in a crash. Carrying a cane, he now limped into office after office for a job, to be listened to sympathetically and turned away regretfully. Brown went to the Vickers works in Weighbridge where Maxwell Muller, the superintendent, listened to his qualifications.“You are a navigator, Mr Brown.” Muller said. “Could you navigate an aeroplane across the Atlantic?”“Yes,” replied Brown immediately.“Then I have a job for you. The Daily Mail is offering a prize of £10,000 for the first plane to fly non-stop between North America and Europe. There are 11 other entrants, including one from the United States, but we want to be first. Vickers doesn’t care about the money; the men who fly the plane can have that. We have a pilot. Are you game to be the navigator?” Muller asked.“Yes,” Brown nodded. The “Vimy” was a converted bomber, a canvas-covered framework of wood and steel tubing, not quite 43 feet long, with a wing-spread of 68 feet. Fitted with extra tanks, she had a range estimated at 2,440 miles, a cruising speed of 90 miles an hour. Her pilot was Captain John Alcock of the R.A.F., 26 years old.He and Brown shook hands. Alcock said plans were to fly the shortest possible route, east from Newfoundland to Britain. Alcock tested and retested the two Rolls-Royce 360-horsepower Eagle engines. Brown pored over charts and what surface-weather maps were available. No one

knew what conditions of turbulence, fog, squall and storm they might meet in the air above the ocean. At the end of April, the Vimy was crated and shipped to St John’s Newfoundland. The daring Australian, Harry Hawker, and his navigator had been waiting there for weeks, held up by uncertain weather. Freddie Raynham, another waiting rival, had placed a bet in London that he would beat Hawker.Hawker took oil on May 18, followed an hour later by Raynham. Raynham crashed on take-off. Hawker was forced down by motor failure 1,400 miles at sea where he was rescued by a Danish cargo boat. Meanwhile, Raynham chivalrously lent his field to the Vimy while he went about rebuilding his plane. At on June 14, Alcock and Brown decided their time had come. They climbed into the open cockpit, where they were to sit side by side throughout the flight, and stowed their meagre provisions: sandwiches, coffee and beer. Slowly the little plane gained altitude and headed out to sea. Some 1,500 feet below, the North Atlantic glittered grey-green, shifting its billows greasily and spitting spume from its whitecaps. Soon the Vimy began to leave the gusty coastal weather behind. But now wisps of fog hung in the air-then suddenly a thick blanket of fog settled down, enveloping the plane and obscuring even the dimly lighted instrument panel. As he was sending a third radio message, about 5:20 in the afternoon, the set’s blue spark of electricity flickered and died. Frantically Brown began searching for the trouble. Finally, he peered over the side of the cockpit: the wind-powered generator that had been fixed to one wing had been torn off.

About six, the fog slowly vanished. But above them were layers of thick cloud. And now the Vimy’s starboard engine suddenly began to rattle like a machine-gun. For three hours more they flew on into the night, and then the treacherous North Atlantic struck at them. Suddenly the flyers were in the centre of a storm: a combination of hail, rain, lightning and vast eddying gusts of wind. The storm caught the plane broadside, tossing it round like a canvas-covered kite. From 5,000 feet they fell to 2,000… 1,000… 500… 100… and still plunging. Then abruptly the storm eased and Alcock and Brown found themselves racing less than 60 feet above the water, canted far over, with the Vimy’s starboard wing-tips almost brushing the white-caps. Swiftly, with sure flying skill, Alcock righted the plane. Brown pointed to the compass and Alcock let out a bellow of laughter. They had been turned round by the storm and were now pointed back towards Newfoundland with both throttles wide open! Pulling back with all his strength, Alcock forced the Vimy’s nose up. But then a new noise began to be heard from the engines. The air intakes to the carburettors were filling up with freezing snow.Laboriously Brown pulled open the blade of his pocket-knife and chipped away at the frozen snow on the air intake. With the hole freed, the port engine coughed back to full roaring life. Dragging himself back to the cockpit, Brown fought for breath; then he climbed over Alcock and battled his way to the starboard engine to clear the snow there. Six times Brown worked his way to the wings and back to the cockpit-until finally Alcock was able to lift the plane to its absolute ceiling, 11,000 feet, above the snow-storm. Their position was now 80 miles from the Irish coast. Minutes later Brown spotted two specks in the ocean.“Islands!” he shouted above the noise of the engines. “We’ve made it!”Bucking a headwind, they were soon flying low over the Irish coast. Alcock, tired from the

16-hour fight with the elements, yelled to Brown, “There’s a field there! I’m going to put her down.” Teddie Brown and Jack Alcock were rushed to England and were presented with the Daily Mail’s £ 10,000 prize.Today the Vimy is still on display at the Science Museum in London.
