PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

For over 152 years, Lincoln College has played an integral

role in educating students. It has participated in the development and expansion of the city of Lincoln and Logan County, and conversely the

community has played an equal role in supporting its oldest College. The

founding fathers of the city of Lincoln, Colonel Robert B. Latham and John D. Gillett, realized the importance of initially securing and then supporting the liberal

arts college that was named after the most revered United States president and fought hard to see it succeed.

Latham and Gillett worked with the local Cumberland Presbyterian church leadership to lobby vigorously to the Synod for the city of Lincoln and against the three competing communities of Newburg, IN, Mt. Zion/Decatur, IL, and Cherry Grove, IL. Collectively they donated the land for this prestigious institution and marshaled the community to raise the significant required funds to start the College and to build University Hall. The community rallied, and in 1865 raised $30,000, which was a huge sum in those days. This feat alone is amazing.

That, however, would not be the only time the community came together to support its budding

SPRING 2017

jewel of a liberal arts college. In 1901, when expansion was required to meet the needs of the students, the community again jumped into action and raised $25,000 (in today’s dollars is equivalent to $670,000) to build the Administration Building.

This pattern of support has continued for our entire 152-year history. During the early 1960’s the community assisted in raising funds for the ‘Lincoln the Student’ statue that resides in front of the McKinstry Library. In addition, volunteers and fire department members came out to fight the fire that engulfed the Administration Building sometime after midnight in 1969. Later, others donated funds to build the Lincoln Center which houses the Athletic Complex and Lincoln Heritage Museum.

Even many of the Museum’s artifacts were donated by local community leaders. Over 10,000 visitors have now toured the Lincoln Heritage Museum since its reopening in the Lincoln Center in 2014.

Millions of dollars have been donated to support Lincoln College over the past 152 years, and with that we have educated more than 31,000 students providing them with the foundation of their love of learning, leadership development, a love of our community, and economic security. Thank you for that support, and I hope you take pride in the accomplishments of our graduates and in having Lincoln College succeed in our community.

Our impact on the city of Lincoln and Logan County, however is much greater than this support, and can actually be measured. Utilizing the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities’ web-based economic impact calculator, and by inputting specific details, our direct and indirect annual local financial impact is estimated at over $40,000,000. This impact is reflected in actual dollars spent in the community through buying houses, acquiring groceries, construction activity, hotel stays, purchasing cars and gas, supporting events, and eating at restaurants, to name a few.

The great news is that this contribution will grow exponentially over the next decade. By adding eight additional bachelor degree programs over the past two years, with more to come, and our move to four-year athletics, the increased impact has been immediate. Last fall we added an additional 100 students at the College. We anticipate we will have an additional 100

students next fall. We also expect to double our student population in size over the next 8 years. This will occur just by giving students the opportunity to stay four-years versus two and by adding additional relevant bachelor degree programs that will lead to great jobs.

This is an exciting time for Lincoln College as we expand and return back to our roots as a baccalaureate and master granting University. We will continue to reinvest in this jewel of Lincoln by growing student enrollment, renovating the historic 152-year-old University Hall, and expanding academic, residential, and social opportunities for our students. This year alone we are investing $350,000 of donated support by alumnus Pat Carroll and others in University Hall to replace some antiquated windows and bricks, repair mortar joints, and spruce up some classrooms.

In addition, we have invested another $350,000 in the new TV studio for the Radio, TV, and New Media bachelor degree program. We have hired additional faculty and staff, some of whom have moved to the community. Our Student Activities office has partnered with the Lincoln Grand 8 Theater and has purchased 2,800 movie tickets as a convenient way to engage and involve our students. We have also added a regularly scheduled student shuttle that provides transportation to local businesses, had student musicians performing throughout Logan County, student groups volunteering at the community festivals and non-profit organizations, as well as a handful of senior-year internships in local businesses.

I know that Lisa and I are new to the community, but we feel great pride and excitement for Lincoln College. I hope you do as well.

Judith Bree Morley, originally of Lincoln, recently announced her intention to provide a legacy gift to Lincoln College to be used to fund a “substantial naming opportunity” in honor of her parents Arthur and Amanda Bree.

“I have been fortunate to have acquired a financial base that should sustain me through retirement,” says Judy, “and my conservative Lincoln upbringing is probably responsible for my need to manage assets wisely not only in my lifetime, but thereafter as well. It is for this reason that I have chosen to announce my intentions at this time.”

Although an exact figure is impossible to establish, because it will be based on the eventual value of Morley’s estate, the gift may be the single largest gift in the history of the College.

Like many donors, Judy Morley had plenty of choices when she began planning her estate. But, she says, she ultimately decided to focus on Lincoln College.

“I thought about giving a little bit here, there, and everywhere, but I wanted to do something meaningful. I knew that my contribution would be appreciated by any institution or charity, but as I considered my options, I kept coming back to Lincoln College. It is not a wealthy institution, so this gift will be useful and meaningful. Lincoln College has ‘staying power,’ which is important to me. The college has survived wars, the ‘Great Depression,’ and numerous recessions,” Morley explained.

A key goal was to honor her parents, Arthur and Amanda Bree.

“They were part of the fabric of Lincoln: They met here, made their living here, and raised their family here. They sacrificed so that I could have. It is right that they should be remembered for the lives they led, for the values they held, and for their quiet contributions to the Lincoln community,” Morley said.

TRUSTEE JUDY MORLEY ON HONORING HER PARENTS & LC LEGACY

“And then, of course, there are the students,” added Morley. “I figure that if this gift can change just one life, dramatically and for the better, it will all have been worth it.”

“This will absolutely make a significant difference in the lives of students and in the future of the College,” Lincoln College President David Gerlach said. “We deeply appreciate Judy’s generosity and are committed to finding the best possible opportunity to pay tribute to a couple who represented the best of this community.”

Morley’s relationship with Lincoln College began shortly after the passing of her father and subsequently of her mother. At the suggestion of her husband, she established the “Arthur W. and Amanda Bree Memorial Scholarship” in 2002. There have been 15 recipients since then, each one exceptional, says Judy, not only academically, but in extracurricular activities as well.

“It is deeply satisfying to think I have played even the smallest part in the success of these students, and the appreciation I have received from them and from their parents, for even this modest stipend, is heartwarming,” she said.

Morley humbly calls her decision a bit “selfish,” but that’s hardly an apt description for a gift that could ultimately represent the single largest gift in the history of the college. Instead, most would say she is simply a smart investor, carefully considering her own goals and targeting her contribution where she believes it will do the most good.

But smart investing is something that Morley knows well. Before her retirement, she was a Principal with William Blair and Company, an employee-owned financial services firm in Chicago that provides investment banking, equity research, brokerage, asset management, and private capital services. She joined the company in 1991 and was named a Principal in 1997, focusing on fixed income products to major clients. Before that she worked for another firm, Rodman and Renshaw, from 1984 to 1991.

Meeting students who have earned the Bree scholarships and seeing the impact it has had on their education gave her a taste of what could be accomplished, she says.

She also believes that in some ways she has benefitted as much from the scholarship as the students.

Drawing from a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote: “It is one of the beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself,” she says her own

compensation has come from meeting Lincoln College students who overcame personal and financial challenges to win academic honors and awards for their accomplishments in acting, music, English, chemistry, athletics, and other activities.

She also draws deep satisfaction from knowing that her gifts are tributes to her parents.

Art Bree was a New Holland native leaning on a parking meter in downtown Lincoln one day, eating a bag of peanuts, when a pretty girl came by. Without knowing what else to do, he tossed a peanut at her to get her attention.

It apparently worked and they started seeing each other, but it would take a World War before they married.

Art graduated from Lincoln College in 1936. As with many Lincoln College students through the years, he was the first in his family to go to college. A family story gives some insight into his kindly nature. One of his fellow students was disabled and, with only stairs available, the student was unable to get to classes on the upper floors of University Hall, so Art would carry him up to class several times a week.

Art was a professional musician, playing tenor saxophone and clarinet with local swing bands. When World War II broke out, he spent four years with the army in Europe and North Africa and was wounded at Anzio. At the end of the war, his company was among the first to liberate the concentration camp at Dachau.

Like many veterans, he returned home after the war and seldom spoke of his experiences. He and “Mandy” married, and when Judy came along, they decided a steadier income was in order, so they put his Lincoln College education to work running the local Arcade Café.

For over 30 years they worked together, raising their three daughters. Morley’s sister Donna (Jacobs) still lives in Lincoln, while her other sister, Janis (Kress) is in Chandler, Arizona.

Outgoing Mandy managed the front of the restaurant, while quiet Art kept things running in the back. They were active in the community. Art often performed at the band shell in Latham Park in Lincoln with another veteran and business and community leader, Norman Muck, an accomplished professional trumpet player.

The Brees were active in a number of community organizations. Mandy was president of the PTA, chaired school fundraising events, went door-to-door for the Cancer Society, and successfully petitioned to have the name of the street that fronts Lincoln College changed from 17th Street to Woodlawn Road.

As for Judy, she graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1966. Her own choice for college was, she laughingly says, a “real educated decision.” Thanks to a tall, blond college recruiter and his “beautiful blue eyes” she chose Elmhurst College. She later earned a graduate degree from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Loyola University.

Her generous financial gifts are just one way Morley has given back to Lincoln College.

She embodies another aspect of college giving that is available to any college supporter, regardless of financial means: that’s in-kind support by giving of one’s own skills and time. Beyond the financial gifts, Morley has been working with college officials to identify opportunities for grants and awards.

As a trailblazer for women in the world of finance, Morley now sees an opportunity to help young women advance their own education and skills.

Her involvement at Lincoln College is giving her an opportunity to again use talents she learned early in her career. While working at Northeastern Illinois University in the alumni office, she started the first alumni newsletter and staffed a one-person office for the foundation board.

“There are many ways to give to Lincoln College. Our supporters and alumni have developed skills, contacts, and gained experiences that can be tremendously beneficial to the college. In many cases, these talents and services would be unaffordable if we had to pay for them outright,” said Debbie Ackerman, Lincoln’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Even if someone isn’t ready or able to make a financial commitment to the college, we welcome their support in other ways.”

Morley’s endowment symbolizes a daughter’s appreciation for the love and support provided by parents who embodied the bedrock that supports a community. But she also sees it as an investment in the future.

She recently returned to the Board of Trustees, after having previously served on the Board in the early 2000’s. That, and the scholarship she has provided, have brought her into close contact with many of the students of today’s Lincoln College.

Today’s diverse student body faces unique challenges, and most students rely heavily on financial aid in order to afford college. These students, she says, are the future.

Morley sees education as a pathway to success. It’s the opportunity to break a downward spiral that threatens many students of limited means. Equally important, she says, students learn that education requires an effort on their part to succeed. That’s a valuable lesson that she learned from her parents, and it’s a lesson that she believes will serve students well throughout their careers.

“You can’t compete without education. It’s a necessity these days,” Morley says, adding, “education is empowerment. Making this legacy gift is a win-win for me. I am very comfortable with the decision. I sleep well at night.”

Lincoln College is expanding its bachelor’s degree programs. Starting in fall 2017, students will be able to major in Community and Human Services, Conservation Biology, Exercise Science, and Vocal Performance in addition to the College’s thirteen degrees already offered at the Lincoln and Normal campuses. The addition of the degrees is part of Lincoln College’s expansion plan to return to its roots as a four-year institution.

“The addition of these four bachelor’s degree programs is essential to the growth of the College and the diversity of degree options we can provide our students,” said Dr. David Gerlach, President of Lincoln College. “Students will gain theoretical knowledge in their classes as well as practical experience through community projects and internships, making our students very marketable to future employers.”

The addition of the degree programs is timely as the College purchased apartments at the north end of campus earlier this month in preparation for housing additional students.

The College anticipates adding an additional 100 students during the fall 2017 semester on top of this year’s already record-setting year.

New students and transfer students can select one of the new majors from the College’s offerings during the admission process. Current students can declare or change their major with their academic advisor.

Program descriptions for the new majors are:

The Bachelor of Arts in Community and Human Services is an interdisciplinary program preparing students for graduate study in social work or careers in service to others in individual and community settings. Students will take courses in sociology, psychology, and community and human services to integrate knowledge and understanding of the socio-economic culture which community and human services are delivered. In addition to a junior year practicum, the program culminates in an internship with a human services agency to provide students with experience in applying theory to professional practice.

The Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology is an interdisciplinary program, challenging students to utilize skills and knowledge from a variety of scientific fields in order to address complex environmental issues. This degree is grounded in natural science and mathematics. Students will engage in student-generated, on-going research projects utilizing the Creekside Outdoor Center for Environmental Education. The program culminates with an internship allowing students to gain additional practical experience in the field. After completion of the program,

students will be prepared for employment in the field or advanced study in graduate school.

The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science prepares students for careers in the four principle fitness sectors of sport, industry, health and education including entry-level positions as an exercise specialist in community, corporate, or clinical settings. The program is also designed to establish a strong foundation for graduate study in exercise physiology. Students take courses in anatomy and physiology, the biomechanics of human movement and the application of these concepts to applied exercise and therapeutic rehabilitation to promote a healthy lifestyle in individuals and communities. The program culminates with an internship allowing students to apply their knowledge to real world settings.

The Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance prepares students for careers in performing and private studio teaching and for advanced study of voice at the graduate level. The program provides students with the study of technique, theoretical concepts, and interpretation while granting them performance opportunities. Students have the opportunity to perform right away and continue to have these opportunities throughout the program. The program culminates with a senior recital demonstrating mastery of all learning outcomes.

Students on the Lincoln campus can earn degrees in the following majors: Business Management; Community and Human Services; Conservation Biology; Criminal Justice Studies; Exercise Science; Jazz Studies; Radio, Television, and New Media; Sport Management; Theatre; and Vocal Performance.

Students in the Accelerated Bridge to Education program can major in Business Management, Criminal Justice Studies, Entrepreneurship, General Studies, Health Services Administration, Liberal Arts, Organizational Leadership, Sport Management, and Supply Chain and Logistics Management.

NEW BSN ARTICULATION AGREEMENT FOR PRE-NURSING STUDENTS

In November, Lincoln College signed an articulation agreement with the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill., for Lincoln College pre-nursing students. This new agreement will provide a direct, articulated pathway for students at Lincoln College enrolled in the AS-Pre-nursing degree program who desire to go on and earn a BSN and become licensed nurses.

A large number of Lincoln College students originate from the Chicago area, and many are interested in working in the health care field. This agreement provides a guaranteed acceptance pathway for those well-prepared students who meet specific benchmarks. Lincoln College students will have a unique opportunity to attend a well-known, accredited BSN program in northern Illinois.

LCTV IS ON AIRLincoln College welcomed the College and Lincoln community to campus on Dec. 8 for a ribbon cutting ceremony for LCTV, the TV and New Media Station. Due to the cold weather, official remarks by President Dave Gerlach, program faculty John Malone and Deb Antoine, and others, were made in the McKinstry Library lobby. The ribbon cutting was held in front of the station, which is located in the former ceramics studio behind the old Adams School building.

The LCTV station is a state-of-the-art facility housing instructional and technical courses for the recently approved Bachelor of Arts in Radio, Television, and New Media degree program which is designed as a “theory to practice” degree, exposing students to both the theoretical and applied aspects of the media industry. Students will learn how the emerging world of new media is rapidly changing the delivery of mass communication through digital and multimedia platforms across the world today.

When students arrive on campus, they have the opportunity to immediately start learning and working at the WLNX-FM radio station and the LCTV television station.

Last year, Lincoln College partnered with the City of Lincoln and its cable franchisee, Comcast, to assume operation control of the local education and government channel. Now, rebranded as LCTV, the channel serves as the outlet for the television component of the degree program while serving the community.

RENOVATION UPDATERenovation is under way on University Hall, thanks to generous donations from Pat Carroll ’61 and other alumni and friends. Masonry restoration and tuck-pointing started last fall and will resume as spring weather allows. Next steps include installing new energy-efficient replica windows on three sides of the first and second floors (and eventually the upper floors as well) and repairing the first flight of the staircase. The wood-framed windows on the front (south face) will be restored to preserve the historic facade. (Fully restoring all the windows was determined to be cost prohibitive. By combining restored and replica windows, both goals of historic preservation and cost-effective energy efficiency can be met.) Watch the Lincoln College Facebook page and the monthly Alumni & Friends E-news for more UH Updates.

“LOVERS OF LIBERTY, TAKE COURAGE!”

New 2017 Exhibit features artifacts from LHM and ALPLM

The Lincoln Heritage Museum at Lincoln College opened its special 2017 exhibit, titled “Lovers of Liberty, Take Courage!” on Monday, February 13th. The new exhibit showcases displays of courage from such historical figures as Harriet Tubman, Elijah P. Lovejoy, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The exhibit also marks the first time that the Lincoln Heritage Museum has collaborated with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and

Museum in Springfield, Ill., in building an exhibit.

“We are very excited to partner with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to help put together such an interesting exhibit that I’m sure will impress and inspire our visitors,” said LHM Director Tom McLaughlin. “It has been a true pleasure to work with such Lincoln scholars as Ron Keller and Kathryn Harris to build this display and tell this story,” said Anne Moseley, LHM assistant director and curator.

exhibit. May you, the visitor, find in this exhibit one piece of information and inspiration that will encourage and enable you to stand for a righteous cause,” said Kathryn Harris, president of the Abraham Lincoln Association.

The “Lovers of Liberty, Take Courage!” exhibit has been generously sponsored by Gehlbach Marquez P.C., a law firm in the city of Lincoln.

“In the tradition of Abraham Lincoln and his life as an attorney in central Illinois, I find it to be a perfect fit that

10,000thVISITOR

Diana Tornow from Burbank, Illinois was the 10,000th visitor at the Lincoln Heritage Museum’s new location which opened April 26, 2014. Tornow toured the Lincoln Heritage Museum on October 6 with the St. Christopher’s Travelers group from Chicago.

Tornow was greeted by Director Tom McLaughlin and presented with a special gift of balloons and a stovepipe hat filled with Abraham Lincoln themed items to commemorate her visit.

McLaughlin said, “We were honored that the St. Christopher’s Travelers group from Chicago came to visit us at the Lincoln Heritage Museum! To have reached 10,000 visitors in just over two years is quite an accomplishment, and I hope that our addition of new community events and increased efforts in promoting this true gem in our community will lead to even more guests coming to learn more about the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln.”

2016 Grand Soirée SETS NEW RECORDS

The Lincoln Heritage Museum set a new record at its 2016 Grand Soirée fundraiser. For the first time, the gala event sold out with around 320 community members in attendance.

The theme for the gala event was Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural ball, coordinating with the Museum’s 2016 special exhibit “The Nation’s Choice,” which showcased Lincoln’s 1860 election campaign.

President-elect and Mrs. Lincoln were in attendance, greeting and posing for photos with guests. Mr. Lincoln shared a few words from his upcoming first inaugural address before the dinner. After dinner, there was a live and silent auction featuring a wide variety of items from artwork and airline miles to a five-course Greek dinner for 10 and a Tennessee Civil War history tour. Through the generosity and support of the guests and donors, the Lincoln Heritage Museum had its most successful fundraiser ever.

“The net proceeds for this event go directly toward the Museum’s efforts to educate the public on the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln through the conservation of items and educational outreach programs. Through the extraordinary generosity displayed at this event, we will be able to continue to offer fun and exciting events for our community,” said Museum Director Tom McLaughlin.

FIRST FLOOR SOUND SYSTEM ENHANCES VISITOR EXPERIENCE

The Lincoln Heritage Museum recently received a generous gift from Jay and Elizabeth Anderson of Lincoln to purchase a sound system for the Museum’s first floor.

“The addition of a sound system will help add to the overall experience our guests will receive when visiting the Museum” said Director Tom McLaughlin. “It is our hope that this will help transport our guests from the present, when they enter the museum, back to the time of Abraham Lincoln.”

Through gifts for specific purposes such as this, the Lincoln Heritage Museum is able to continue to improve the experience for our guests and educate the public on the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. Thank you Jay and Libby!

If you are interested in making a gift to the Lincoln Heritage Museum, please contact Tom McLaughlin at (217) 735-7254 or [email protected].

our sponsor for this year’s exhibit is also a law firm. It is through the generosity of Natalie Marquez and Gehlbach Marquez P.C. that we are able to put together such a compelling story showing various displays of courage, and we cannot thank them enough for this new partnership!” said McLaughlin.

The “Lovers of Liberty, Take Courage!” exhibit is now on display and will continue to be open to the public until the end of December. For museum hours and any additional information, contact the Lincoln Heritage Museum at (217) 735-7399 or visit http://museum.lincolncollege.edu.

QUIET ON THE SET! AND ACTION!Students and faculty from LC’s Theatre and Radio, TV, and New Media programs spent a very cold, windy February morning at Creekside shooting a special scene for the fall play “Abe Lincoln in Illinois.” The show, which ran on the Johnston Center main stage for two weekends in February, was a collaborative project with both LC students and community members in the cast and crew. Using the Pete Fredericks Log Cabin as a backdrop, the scene was projected onto the large screen on the JC stage at the opening of Act II and featured special guest cameo performances by Lincoln Heritage Museum Director and LC Theatre alumnus Tom McLaughlin ’94, Museum Assistant Director Anne Moseley, and LC President David Gerlach among others.

The Peoples of the Past Boardwalk and Historical Time-line at the Campbell Creekside Environmental Center will be a handicapped-accessible interpretive trail that will transport visitors hundreds of years into the past.

Inspired by the life-size dioramas of the Peoples of the Past Exhibit at the Illinois State Museum, the Boardwalk will be an extension of the existing walkway at Creekside along which visitors will travel “forward to the past,” each step taking them further back in time from the present.

The Boardwalk begins with the Doug DeMay Rotarian Way section at Creekside’s parking lot, continues along the Jim Moriearty section that flanks the Bill and Jean Gossett Tallgrass Prairie and along the Illinois Native Plant Society section that flanks the Pollinator Habitat, and currently ends at the Pete Fredericks Log Cabin at the Pioneer Area near the entry into the forest.

Phase One of the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk will skirt around the Pioneer area and traverse a tributary stream across a footbridge, continue along the boundary of agricultural land on one side and the upland forest of Sugar Creek on the other, and terminate at the Wibben Overlook of Sugar Creek.

This phase will traverse approximately 800 feet and 800 years of history, showcasing Pioneer, Kickapoo Native American Indian, and Mississippian Native American Indian cultures.

A “time traveler” along the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk will encounter outdoor, life-size, three-dimensional exhibits of previous ways of life in Central Illinois, including small gardens, shelters, and household items for each of these three time periods.

Over the next several years, as the trails are improved upstream along Sugar Creek, the time-line will be extended even further—perhaps as far back as Archaic Native American Indian Times, 8,000 years ago.

To support the expansion of the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk and exhibits, alumni and friends of Lincoln College and Creekside are invited to participate in the development of this time-line by sponsoring a plank or planks in the Boardwalk that corresponds in time to a historical date or event. Permanent plaques commemorating the historical date and event will be affixed to the planks of the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk as the Boardwalk is being constructed. Following completion of this phase of the Boardwalk construction, plank sponsors and the commemorated events will be recognized annually in a “Peoples of the Past Boardwalk” pamphlet. Plank sponsorships are $25 per plank or five for $100.

Another way to participate in the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk Project at Creekside is by donating interpretive materials for the exhibits along the Boardwalk. Dr. Campbell is currently seeking to furnish the Pete Fredericks Log Cabin with artifacts reflecting rural life in Central Illinois from 1845 to 1945 that would be useful in interpreting the pioneer way of life.

The Peoples of the Past Boardwalk Project will seek to have this structural replica furnished with large and small artifacts reflecting rural life in Central Illinois from 1845 to 1945. Lincoln College Creekside has prepared a “wish” list that itemizes examples of furnishings that would be useful in interpreting a Pioneer way of life at this section of the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk, and would be happy to disseminate that list to anyone who might have, and might wish to donate, non-expensive materials to be exhibited within the log cabin and to be used during pioneer reenactments through the years.

For more information about supporting the Peoples of the Past Boardwalk and interpretive exhibits, contact Creekside Director Dr. Dennis Campbell at [email protected] or (217) 735-7260.

1960s

Everett Errol Murdock, Ph.D., class of 1961, recently published a new book, “From

Washington and Adams to Hillary and Trump: The Stories behind the Story of Every Presidential Election - With Special Focus on the Volatile Presidential Election of 2016.” Dr. Murdock is an Emeritus Professor at California State University, Long Beach and is the recipient of that university’s teacher of the year award. He has published six novels and many textbooks. More than a million copies of his books are in print.

1970s

Les Linz, class of 1979, has recently completed his third manuscript, “Confessions of a Job Gypsy.” It chronicles 50 years of jobs (ages 8-58) and how they affected his life and the lives of others as a result. At age 8, during the course of his first job of errand boy, he encountered a dead body—and it goes on from there. A couple of the jobs were worked at Lincoln College.

1980s

Phil Styles, class of 1987, was one of 50 celebrities and influencers honored by The Made Man at their Atlanta, Ga., event in January. The Made Man (TMM) is a national multimarket corporate and community initiative designed to showcase philanthropy and honor the extraordinary achievements of notable African American male influencers from various walks of life, while building a bridge for the honorees to volunteer their resources to provide empowerment for underserved men with motivational mentoring workshops and suiting them for success. Among the honorees at the Atlanta event were Congressman John Lewis and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Larry Perez, class of 1988, is now the Director for the Center of Student Involvement at Barry University in Miami, Florida. Larry

started his 25th year in Higher Education and it all began as a resident assistant at Lincoln College.

1990s

Tony Zurkammer, class of 1990, ran the 2016 New York Marathon in November. He finished with a time of 3:55:46.

The average finish time was 4:37:38. Tony placed 1,316 (out of 4,616) in his age group (45-49) and 11,396 overall out of a total of 51,394 finishers. Tony is active in the Lincoln Area Running Club and participates in numerous races in Illinois and around the country every year.

Several members of the Lynx ’92-’93 Men’s Basketball Team were reunited for the first time in 23 years on August 13, 2016 to celebrate a birthday. Elmer Dickerson (class of ’93) was turning 43, and his wife Kertrina had a special surprise for him. After hearing stories over and over about the great friends Elmer made at Lincoln College, Kertrina decided to secretly invite members of the Lynx men’s basketball team to Elmer’s birthday party at their home. Attendees included (left to right): Marlon Burton (’93), Kyle Jones (’93), Elmer Dickerson (’93), Billy Cinkay (’94), Troy Taylor (’94) and Danny Brown (’94). Members of the team arrived late and were announced by a DJ “starting line-up” style. It was an emotional reunion for all. Former Lynx Coach Joe O’Brien, who was unable to attend, was contacted via telephone and players were able to share the sentiments with him as well. The night was a night to remember for all. (Submitted by Billy Cinkay.)

CLASS NOTESChris Gray, class of 1995, was recently appointed by the McHenry County College Board of Trustees as the College’s new Vice President of Academic and

Student Affairs. After LC, Chris earned his bachelor’s degree in theatre from Eastern Illinois University, and his master’s degree in theater and a doctorate in educational administration and foundations with a research area of theatre assessment from Illinois State University.

Natalie (Jeckel) McGee, class of 1997, and husband Case McGee celebrated the birth of their daughter Iris Eloise McGee on December 19, 2016.

2000s

Jaemin Chon, class of 2000, received her AS (pre-nursing) at LC, then graduated with a BSN from ISU in 2003, and a MA in Counseling from UIS in

2010. She started working as a Mental Health (Nurse) Clinician, MA, RN/BSN, at UnityPoint Health Methodist’s emergency department in Peoria in January, and hopes to take the exam for Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor after completing her second full-time supervised year of working. She writes: I’m passionate about doing my part and contributing my time and resources toward humanitarian and environmental causes. I’m a member of The Womens’ Fund, the Sierra Club, and the REI co-op. My favorite hobby is trail running and ultra-running. I’ve discovered a comradery amongst the local trail running community like nothing else I’ve ever known. My longest trail race to date is 50 miles. I hope to complete my first 100 mile race in the coming year. I’ve come a long way from the days in high school when I could not run one mile without stopping continually due to side stitches. My love of the outdoors extends to hiking, cycling, and backpacking. I am hoping for lots of snow this winter in order to take up snow shoeing and snow shoe running (such running equipment does exist apart from regular snow shoes!). Having spent my childhood growing up in Alaska, my wonder and amazement with snow still remains. (Photo was taken at the beginning of my first 50 mile race in April 2015, Potawatomi Trail Runs in Pekin, Illinois.

CONSISTENT GIVERSEvery single gift has an impact, but it’s the many gifts, large and small, given over many years, which sustain Lincoln College. We recognize our many donors—alumni, friends, parents and businesses—who have faithfully supported Lincoln College by giving ten or more years, including at least one gift in the past last five years. Thank you!
