Mining and mine processing facilities face different water treatment challenges throughout the whole life cycle of operations. Those range from the provision of potable water and the treatment of sewage from mining camps to the generation of process water for as well as the treatment of waste water from the mining operations.

On the waste water side, the mining operators are subject to strict discharge limits imposed by the regulators, which brings along a need for innovative and efficient treatment solutions. Typical mining wastewater will have oil by-products, high turbidity and suspended solids in addition to other contaminants.

Food & beverage as well as agricultural industries require a lot of water for their production, while correspondingly they generate large volumes of waste water out of the production process as well. Waste water from these industries generally has a high organic content, which needs to be removed prior to discharge into the environment.

Due to the nature of the food processing or beverage industry, requirements to the process water used in the production process in these industry segments are extremely high. This comes along with a need for high quality water treatment systems.

The oil & gas industry has a need for high-volume water and waste water treatment in many different areas, whether upstream, downstream, refining, or other segments of the industry.

Waste water often has a high content of oil & grease and chemicals, which need to be removed prior to discharge. In industry segments such as refining, many other contaminants such as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) or chemicals are observed in the waste water. Those can be very toxic and are subject to strict regulations, which require them to be removed prior to discharge. Due to the nature of the industry water treatment systems often need to be designed and built “explosion-proof”.

The electronics industry needs huge amounts of water in their production processes. Often, such as in semiconductor production / wafer fabs, the quality of the water must meet highest standards – the provision of “ultrapure” water is necessary, which requires highest standard water purification systems.

Aquatic centers and swimming and spa facilities use a lot of water, and are subject to very special requirements in different countries. Unless proper treatment processes in place, there is the danger of the formation of bacteria in the water such as legionella which can be very harmful to humans.

De.mem offers a wide range of products for aquatic facilities. Those include standard pool filters for the treatment of the pool water.

Furthermore, depending on water and discharge tariffs as well as electricity cost, it can be economical for the operator of the facility to re-cycle the “backwash water” from the regular pool filtration. This recycling of backwash water is often subject to detailed regulations, such as the DIN 19645 in Germany. De.mem offers systems which are in full compliance with all requirements of the DIN 19645.

Products deployed include:

UV

Media filters

Ultrafiltration systems

Reverse Osmosis systems

Backwash water recycling systems

Fleet operators and car wash2

Fleet operators and car wash stations obviously use a lot of water for the cleaning of vehicles. In the mining industry, due to the extremely large size, vast amounts or water are required.

After the washing process, the water contains a wide range of contaminants such as non-dissolved and dissolved oils, suspended solids and chemicals. De.mem offers processes and systems to remove such contaminants, so the water can be discharged into the environment in line with government regulations.

De.mem also offers systems that enable the operator of vehicle washing bays to recycle water from the wash process for re-use. Furthermore, De.mem can also provide systems that generate ultra-pure water. Ultra-pure water leaves no residue on the vehicles and increases the efficiency of the washing process.

Products deployed include:

Dissolved air floatation

Chemical dosing

Ultrafiltration systems

Reverse Osmosis systems

Municipal & Residential

Municipal & ResidentialThe municipal & residential sector drives a huge demand for modern water and sewage treatment systems in countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region and in particular China.

While in countries such as China, the large urban centers already have proper water treatment in place, in many areas outside of the big cities there is still no or no reliable water supply. Given the pollution of the rivers and surface water, the Chinese government has recently approved new legislation which stipulates much stricter sewage treatment.

De.mem Products and Solutions

Services Offered

In the case of sea water, it may include process steps such as screening, Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) in case of algae removal, gravity driven or pressurized filter systems, membranes (UF, NF, RO) and remineralization plus disinfection system.

In the case of river water, it may include screening, MBR, membranes (UF, NF, RO) and remineralization plus disinfection system.

Well water requires simple treatment which may include filter and cartridge filtration, membrane system and disinfection.

Treatment of sanitary waste will be provided with equipment for screening debris, oil and grease removal, anaerobic and aerobic processes using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB), MBR, SBR, Activated Sludge processing systems, sludge treatment and disposal systems and disinfection for effluent reuse.

Effluent or treated water will be disinfected using chemicals or UV or ozone prior to reuse such as irrigation and service water.

Rain water can also be collected and process for reuse.

The treatment process depends on the feed water and requested output water quality:

Reliable and safe access to water supply is the basis for economic growth. This is of particular importance in Australia or in the emerging economies of the Asia-Pacific region, where access to raw water can be scarce, or where the water source can be heavily polluted.

De.mem Pte Ltd offers a wide spectrum of chemical, physical and biological processes for water treatment in line with different water sources. This includes state of the art membrane technologies as well as pre-treatment and post-treatment processes. The design of the systems is optimized by De.mem to the benefit of its clients, and to meet the client’s requirements and budget. The water produced by De.mem’s systems can meet highest quality standards and government or WHO regulations.

The systems can be standardized or customized, according to the specific client’s needs. For easy deployment in de-centralized locations, the systems can packaged in an industrial sized container for easy transport and installation. If deployed remotely, particular importance can be put on robust design for low maintenance requirements when deployed remotely, and a high degree of automation for ease of operations.

De.mem also has the ability to offer so-called Build, Own, Operate (BOO) or Build, Own/Operate, Transfer (BOOT) arrangements to its clients.

Under a BOO arrangement, the ownership in the respective water or waste water treatment system remains with De.mem, and De.mem runs the system on-site on the client’s behalf. If a BOOT arrangement is requested, the ownership in the water treatment system will be transferred to the client after a certain, pre-agreed period of time.

As a result, beyond the provision of operations & maintenance services, in the case of BOO/BOOT arrangements, De.mem also provides the financing of the system to the client.

This offer comes along with the following advantages for De.mem clients:

Cost savings: Based on the De.mem proposal, our clients can easily calculate the cost and/or potential cost savings resulting from the implementation of the water treatment system

No upfront capital expenditure: De.mem charges a recurring, monthly fee for the client – which means that no or only limited upfront capital investment by the client is required

Limited liability: As De.mem provides a performance guarantee for the treated water, liability for the client from the water of waste water treatment process is limited.

Focus on core activities: De.mem is responsible for all manpower, operations and maintenance. This frees up manpower and resources for the client, which helps them focus on their core activities.

Minimum disruption: As far as possible, De.mem will base its solutions on the existing processes which are already in place. This will lead to minimum disruption for the client when the new system is implemented.

Technology

De.mem low pressure hollow fiber nanofiltration membraneDe.mem has exclusively licensed a novel low pressure hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane technology from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. The innovation is based on many years of research by the NTU scientists.

The new membrane is based on a proprietary materials formulation. Its surface is positively charged, which ultimately results in better rejection of contaminants that is less dependent on pore size. A loose substrate structure allows for high water permeation.

The De.mem nanofiltration membrane has potential applications in many different areas. It is operated at a comparably low pressure of only 2 bar. This leads to significant savings in power consumption vs. traditional flat-sheet based Nanofiltration or Reverse Osmosis, ultimately resulting in reduced operating cost. The De.mem nanofiltration membrane is a hollow fiber membrane. This also allows for easy and automated cleaning by a simple backwash routine.

The filtration process works as shown in the following chart. Hollow fiber membrane bundles are placed in the inside of so-called membrane modules. The water is then pumped inside these modules. As pressure is applied, clean water passes through the pores of the selective layer of the membrane. The contaminants remain outside. The clean water then leaves the modules. In a regular and simple backflush routine, the dirt is cleaned out of the modules.

De.mem sees potential applications for the technology in both industrial waste water treatment and potable water treatment. The company is currently in the process of setting up a pilot manufacturing plant for the De.mem nanofiltration membrane in Singapore.

De.mem NF 2000 – which allows for high flux. The specs sheet can be found here

De.mem NF 600 – which enables high rejection of contaminantsThe specs sheet can be found here

De.mem uses the nanofiltration membrane in two different formulations:
