Dashain and Tihar

During the month of Kartik

(late September and early

October), the Nepalese people

indulge in the merriment of the

biggest festival of the year,

Dashain. It is the longest and

the most auspicious festival in

the Nepalese annual calendar,

celebrated by Hindus. The

fifteen days of celebration occurs during the bright lunar

fortnight ending on the day of the full moon. Throughout

the kingdom of Nepal, goddess Durga in all her

manifestations is worshipped with innumerable pujas and

abundant offerings.

Tihar is a festival

which is celebrated for

five days during late

autumn and has its

unique ways of

celebration. It is

considered to be of great importance as it shows reverence

to not just the humans and the gods, but also to the animals

like crows, cows and dogs that maintain an intimate

relationship with humans. People make patterns on the floor

courtyards using materials such as colored rice, dry flour,

colored sand or flower petals outside of their house,

called Rangoli, which is meant to be a sacred welcoming

area for the gods and goddesses especially Goddess Laxmi.

International School Award (ISA)

ISA stands for International School Award which is one of the projects of British Council. Being a part

of ISA makes us enjoy the various benefits that come as a package

while performing projects and activities. It helps in broadening

perspective, aiding in professional development and raising teaching

standards. For youths it is an opportunity to learn about different

countries and their culture, preparing them for a global society. There

are three entry points to International School Award: Foundation,

Intermediate and Accreditation. All members of our school attended an

orientation session regarding this program. Out of the eight projects

we need to do, two are already in progress.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a kind of cancer that develops from breast

tissue. Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a

change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, fluid coming from

the nipple, or a red scaly patch of skin. In those with distant

spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph

nodes, shortness of breath, or yellow skin.

Our school had a fund raising program for the breast cancer

victims. All of us donated twenty rupees each for the victims on

the 28th

October, 2016.

Gardening

I love gardening. My favourite flowers are jasmine, daisy, lily,

and tulip. My favourite herbs are lemon grass, rosemary, cheek

peppermint and tulsi plant. I love to drink tulsi tea and lemon

grass tea. I love spring because varieties of flowers bloom

during this season. Gardening is so much fun. All of us should

plant flowers and plants to make the environment better.

Rangoli

Rangoli is an art form native to

Nepal, India and Bangladesh

(known as Alpana) in which patterns

are created on the floor in living

rooms or courtyards using materials

such as coloured rice, dry flour,

coloured sand or flower petals. It is

usually made during Diwali or

Tihar, Onam, Pongal and other

Indian, Bangladeshi and Nepalese

festivals related to Hinduism.

Designs are passed from one

generation to the next, keeping both

the art form and the tradition alive.

The purpose of Rangoli is

decoration, and it is thought to bring

good luck.

Our school had organized a Rangoli

making competition during the Tihar

celebration. We were divided into

groups for the competition. All of us

made beautiful designs of Rangoli

and had a lot of fun making them.

Flower

Plants are important to us. They give us oxygen to breathe

and help to keep the environment clean and fresh. Like us

plants also have different parts of their body. Leaves are the

most important part of a plant as it helps in making food for

the plant with the help of sunlight, water and air. The most

beautiful part of a plant is the flower. Flowers are of different

colours, shapes and sizes. They look beautiful and smell

good. I love flowers and their colours.

did a lot of calculation while selling

off our thing to the buyers. We also

learnt to deposit money in the bank.

Our parents were glad see how

actively we were selling off our

Poetry Recitation Competition

Poetry recitation competition was one of the events I was

looking forward to. I was very excited on the day I got the

poem and started preparing. That day finally arrived and all

my friends were as nervous as me. I eagerly waited for my

turn and finally when my name was announced I felt a

sudden tinge of fear creeping in me. I went to the centre

stage, took a deep breath and started my recitation and

recited well. I am awaiting the result of this competition.

Haiku Flavours

Haiku is a traditional poetry writing style that started from

Japan. It consists of three lines. First line consists of five

syllables and the second line consists of seven syllables and the

third line consists of five syllables. Each Haiku should embody

something about nature in some way.

We had a workshop for writing Haiku in our school in Nepali

and English and the students were asked to prepare a booklet

consisting of ten Haikus in both the languages.

An official book launch ceremony was organized on Friday 16th

December 2016 where our parents

were also invited. Each of us recited the best Haiku from English and Nepali booklets. Our parents

also participated by writing one in the language preferred by them. Here are some of the Haikus by

our students and parents.

How much can I fit?
