Board of Trustees

2019-2020 Board of Trustees: (Back row) David Walrath, Br. Dan Morgan, FSC, Dan Petrocchi ‘62, Don Fitzgerald (Vice Chair), Steve Mahaney ‘69 (Chair), Mary Ann Burford, Ron Metzker, (Front row) Dr. Heidi Harrison, Tracy Calvillo, Marianne Evashenk, Javier Plasencia ‘74, Margarita Fernandez

The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of 13 volunteers who

are alumni, parents of alumni, friends, educators and professionals dedicated to safeguard-

ing and advancing the school’s Lasallian Catholic college preparatory mission. Before

joining the Board of Trustees, candidates undergo training on Lasallian charism (history,

spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance – a model used by

Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco New Orleans. In the 2019-20

school year, the board welcomed two new members, Margarita Fernandez and Ron

Metzker. Steve Mahaney ’69 serves in the role of chair and Don Fitzgerald is the vice chair.

The Policy Governance model comprises an inclusive, written set of goals for the

school, called Ends Policies, which guide the board in monitoring the performance of

the school through the President/CEO. Ends Policies help ensure that Christian

Brothers High School adheres to the vision of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and

the District of San Francisco New Orleans.

“Participating in the guidance of Christian Brothers High School has been very reward-

ing and inspiring for me,” says Chair Steve Mahaney ’69. “It is an honor to represent

the Brothers in helping fulfill their Lasallian mission of providing a superior education

to a diverse student body comprised of students from all backgrounds, races and

socio-economic levels. We are blessed to have a welcoming faculty and staff at CB

providing students with a safe and positive environment to learn, grow and blossom.”

“The members of the Board of Trustees donate their time and expertise, and are

dedicated to fulfilling the vision and responsibilities entrusted to us by the Brothers.

The Trustees are committed, talented and intelligent people with diverse backgrounds

all with the same goal of ensuring CB provides an excellent education for our students.

We are mindful of our school’s rich history and we embrace the opportunity to ensure

Christian Brothers High School remains the place to be.”

Message From the President

Spring 2020

Dear Alumni, Families and Friends:

LORCAN P. BARNES, PRESIDENT

When we do return to campus, our students will enjoy CB’s

new athletic facilities including the Peter P. Bollinger ’57

Stadium (see page 3). In February, we celebrated the culmina-

tion of the Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I with the grand

opening and dedication of the facilities. Though our time using

the facilities has been limited, generations of students will

benefit from this incredible endeavor.

Economists and civic leaders by and large are predicting the

economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will be significant.

CB is financially strong. The school is not burdened by long-

term debt and we have modest reserves. Further, we have

no major deferred maintenance projects. Most importantly,

we have outstanding PEOPLE. In other words, we have been

careful stewards of the resources that have been entrusted

to our care.

Our conscientious stewardship over the years positions us to

ride out this storm. The Annual Report of Gifts (see page 27)

and list of donors reflects gifts received during the July 1, 2018

through June 30, 2019 time period. We are grateful to all the

alumni, families and friends of the school who share of their

resources to ensure that Christian Brothers High School

continues to thrive. Your generosity ensures that we are

positioned to maintain the CB tradition of excellent, value-

centered, Catholic, Lasallian education for generations

to come.

We pray that you all stay well and healthy.

Live Jesus in our hearts!

As I write this letter, campus is shuttered with faculty and staff

working from home as Sacramento and much of Northern

California come to grips with “stay at home” and “shelter in

place” orders. The directives came in just as Christian Brothers

High School had transitioned to Digital Learning Days. Our

teachers have risen to the occasion with creativity, determina-

tion and an inspirational spirit of collaboration. So, while there

is no substitute for the classroom experience and relationships

at the heart of our Lasallian Catholic community, I have no

doubt that quality instruction, personal connection and

learning will continue for as long as is necessary.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Lasallian

charism is practical innovation. St. John Baptist de La Salle was

known for looking at current realities and adjusting educational

services to meet the needs of students. He would be proud of

CB’s educators for their heroic work at reinventing Lasallian

Catholic education on very short notice.

We are blessed to have excellent teachers and a robust technol-

ogy program anchored by our iPad program and learning manage-

ment system, Schoology. Augmenting these are a host of online

platforms for meeting, connecting and sharing information. As we

see schools and districts throughout the nation, and in our own

community, struggling to identify ways to navigate and educate in

these uncertain times, we are profoundly grateful to be in a

position of strength. We are grateful for the families who entrust

us with the hearts and minds of their daughters and sons. And, we

are grateful for the generations of alumni, families and friends

whose generosity has allowed us to create and maintain a

phenomenal technology program that facilitates our rigorous

learning program, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

As always, we are anchored by our faith. Each morning, our

Director of Campus Ministry and members of our student

campus ministry team, God Squad, post a prayer to allow us to

begin each day as we do on campus, with a reminder that we are

always in the holy presence of God. This is followed by a “midday

moment” of reflection, mindfulness and gratitude.

Christian Brothers High School Announces New PresidentChristian Brothers High School is pleased to announce the appointment of

Dr. Crystal LeRoy as President, effective July 1, 2020. Dr. LeRoy, who will be the fifth

president in school history, takes over for Lorcan Barnes who announced in July of

2019 that the 2019-20 school year would be his final year of service to the school.

She brings considerable experience as an educator and administrator to the role,

currently serving as Superintendent/Chief School Business Official of Kenilworth

Public Schools in Kenilworth, Illinois and adjunct professor at Northeastern

Illinois University. She holds a bachelor's degree in international relations from

Northwestern University and attained her master's degree in cultural education

and policy studies from Loyola University. She later earned her school business

official certification from Northern Illinois University before earning her doctorate

in educational administration and supervision from Loyola University.

This news is the culmination of a thoughtful and thorough process that began

with the formation of a Presidential Search Committee in September and

securing the services of an executive search firm later in the fall. Following an

extensive nationwide search and in-depth review of applications, 18 candidates

were identified and interviewed. Seven men and women advanced to a more

extensive interview after which three finalists were identified. The three finalists

were invited to meet with members of the community including parents, faculty

and staff members, alumni and other stakeholders. The Board of Trustees then

conducted an extensive interview with the candidates and concluded that

Dr. LeRoy will best serve the community.

“I am deeply honored and profoundly humbled to be invited to serve as President

of Christian Brothers High School,” says Dr. LeRoy. “The opportunity to unite my

Catholic faith with my vocation as an educator is a dream come true. To do so in the

rich and transformative Lasallian charism of the Christian Brothers is a blessing and

a trust that I hold sacred. I so look forward to working with the wonderful faculty,

staff, families, alumni and friends of the school to ensure that CB continues to be

a strong, vibrant and faith-filled community for generations to come.”

“Dr. LeRoy is a faith-filled and visionary leader,” says Board of Trustees President

Steve Mahaney ‘69. “We look forward to partnering with her as she leads the

school in living the tenets of our Lasallian Core Principles – faith in the presence

of God, quality education, inclusive community, respect for all persons, and

concern for the poor and social justice.”

Christian Brothers is looking forward to sharing more information about

Dr. LeRoy in the future.

Christian Brothers celebrates the completion of the

Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I and grand

opening of the Peter P. Bollinger ’57 Stadium.

Christian Brothers’ Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I

focused on raising $11.8 million to construct a synthetic turf field

and all-weather track, grow the school’s endowment for tuition

assistance and improve parking. In strategically planning for the

future, school leaders, in collaboration with community stake-

holders, architects and building professionals, created a bold

15-year campus master plan during the 2013-2014 academic

year. In just three years after the grand opening of the George

Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center, President Lorcan

Barnes publicly announced the campaign in the fall of 2017,

sharing the news at the annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner.

Thanks to the generous gifts and support we have received

through the recent years, we are thrilled to announce that we

crossed the finish line in December 2019 and exceeded our

campaign goal. Alumni, families and friends have committed

an impressive $12.6 million in gifts and pledges.

CB BREAKS GROUND ON OUTDOOR ATHLETIC FACILITIES AND PARKING LOT

In July, earth moving equipment was brought in for site prepara-

tion work. Construction began during the summer as hardworking

crews simultaneously worked on the outdoor athletic facilities and

parking lot, with the ambitious goal of completing the parking lot

by the first day of school on August 14, 2019 – a goal successfully

completed. By the time students arrived on campus, 100 new

parking spots were readily available, ensuring more efficient

traffic flow and greater parking capacity.

Christian Brothers officially broke ground on the new outdoor

athletic facilities and parking lot on June 27, 2019. Excited students,

parents, alumni and stakeholders were in attendance on this

beautiful summer evening. Director of Advancement Nancy

Smith-Fagan and President Lorcan Barnes shared brief speeches

followed by a personal account by Lena Mikacich ’22, describing

her experience as a multi-sport student-athlete at CB playing

tennis and lacrosse, and how this new stadium will allow her, and

students like her, to be the best possible student-athlete they can

be. Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I Chair, Willie Nolan ’69,

spoke about the strong impact of volunteers on this campaign.

GRAND OPENING OF THE PETER P. BOLLINGER ’57 STADIUM!

The Culmination of Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I

In commemoration and gratitude of the completion of the stadium,

the Christian Brothers community gathered to celebrate the

dedication, blessing and grand opening of the Peter P. Bollinger ’57

Stadium on February 27, 2020. The event began with a welcome

from Director of Advancement Nancy Smith-Fagan, followed by a

fantastic drumline performance and parade of student-athletes

proudly displaying their Falcon spirit. The American flag was

raised for the first time by members of the athletic department,

Gloria Barela, Melissa Flowers and Jake Hunley ‘96. Emily

Hancock ’20 performed a beautiful rendition of the national

anthem. Honorary alumnus, Msgr. Al O’Connor, presided over a

beautiful blessing ritual as the sun was setting in the background.

President Lorcan Barnes shared remarks about important

moments throughout the campaign and how the entire project

sustains the Christian Brothers mission well into the future.

“Our mission is to produce graduates who are

spiritually rich, morally courageous and intellectu-

ally distinguished,” says President Barnes.

“Athletics is a means to that end. Athletics engage

students in the life of their school.”

“At CB, athletics is more than just competition,”

states Dale Milton, athletic director. “We place the

emphasis on student-athletes, where academics

come first as sports are part of developing the whole

person. We believe that through sports, we help

young people develop skills that will serve them well

into the future – teamwork, sportsmanship, dedica-

tion, perseverance, and winning and losing gracefully.”

On behalf of the school, CB football players presented Mr.

Bollinger with a signed football commemorating the dedication

of the Peter P. Bollinger ’57 Stadium. “It is always a reflection

when you get older; what did your education do for you?”

reflects Mr. Bollinger. “In my case, it made a major difference in

my outlook for life, my approach to people, and the Christian

ethic. I’ve tried to carry that on for my entire life and I want to

thank Christian Brothers for giving me that opportunity…I love

Christian Brothers dearly.”

Lauren Towne ’20 shared how her student-athlete experience at

CB will help her in the next phase of her life, continuing her soccer

career at Gonzaga University, and expressed her gratitude for Mr.

Bollinger and donors like him for making the new athletic facilities

and improvements possible. Student-athletes then took to the

track and field for a celebration of athletic firsts, including the first

of many kick offs, throws, pitches, passes, and sprints to the finish

line. In celebratory fashion, attendees ended the evening by

enjoying delicious food truck eats on the plaza.

This joyous event marked the culmination of CB’s Securing the

Future Campaign – Phase I and an important project that has been

years in the making. The beautiful state-of-the-art multi-sport

stadium includes a turf field, all-weather six-lane track, stands for

1,200 fans, press box, digital scoreboard and lights. Included are

new and improved dugouts and field surface for softball, batting

cages for baseball, a JV baseball field, discus and shotput rings, a

welcoming entrance and a plaza for community gathering. We are

grateful for our partnership with Jackson Construction, who have

built every facility on the CB campus in the past 25 years.

The education of students extends

beyond the classroom into the

athletic arena. Our student-athletes

will now be able to train and

compete on facilities that match

their God-given gifts and talents.

They will grow personally and

physically in an environment that

challenges them to become the

best person they can be. They will continue to hone their skills

in teamwork, leadership and perseverance. The CB community

will have a greater sense of pride and school spirit.

COMING FULL CIRCLE: PETER P. BOLLINGER ’57

In 1956, a seventeen-year-old student by the name of Peter P.

Bollinger ’57 walked onto the newly opened campus of Bishop

Armstrong High School in Oak Park looking forward to running

track and playing on the brand-new football field. Little did this

“All-City, all-Catholic” student-athlete imagine that in 2020 a

state-of-the-art track and field would bear his name. The alumnus

has come full circle, making a transformative gift to his alma mater

to help fund the construction of the Peter P. Bollinger ’57 Stadium.

Bollinger began his high school education at Christian Brothers at

the 21st and Broadway location, before moving to the new

Bishop Armstrong campus in Oak Park, the first year it opened.

According to Bollinger, Bishop Armstrong’s first principal, Brother

Gabriel, certainly had his hands full. “This large cohesive group of

young men had to adjust to the presence of females. It took a

long time for us to settle in,” he recalls with a laugh. “He took the

brunt of our rebellions and handled it very well.” When Bollinger

wasn’t in the classroom, he was busy with co-curricular activities.

A multi-sport varsity athlete, he excelled at track, football and

basketball. He was also Bishop Armstrong’s first student council

president. Bollinger remembers his high school years fondly.

“I treasure the education I received from the Brothers,” states

Bollinger. “The biggest lesson I carried with me from school

was the value of honesty and simply, treating other people how

you would want to be treated. My parents, grandparents and

the school all taught me the importance of this value and I’ve

carried it with me all my life.”

After high school, Bollinger went on to attend Sacramento State

University and make his mark on the Sacramento region

through commercial development. He became a world traveler

and an avid hunter and fisherman. Along the way, his family

grew to include children and an abundance of grandchildren.

“Family is very important to me,” states Bollinger. “I always find

great joy in having the whole family together.”

Even after his time at Bishop Armstrong, Bollinger continues to

be a proponent and supporter of Lasallian Catholic education.

“One of the things that impresses me most about CB is its

longevity,” says Bollinger. “I have witnessed big changes in

Catholic education through the years and CB is on an ascending

trajectory. I am encouraged by the fact that CB is doing so well.

It’s important to keep the school and the scholastic level where

it is, so the tradition goes on.”

Bollinger’s gift to the Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I is,

indeed, helping to ensure that the tradition goes on. “I can’t say

enough how grateful we are for Mr. Bollinger’s incredible

generosity,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “His transformative

gift is a testament to the Brothers who touched his heart in the

1950s and a gift to current and future Falcons. Not only does

his gift help give our students a facility that matches their

God-given gifts, it positions CB well for future growth.”

When asked about the inspiration behind his decision to give so

generously, Bollinger explains, “I felt obligated to give. I owe the

school, the community and the Brothers so much. Everything I got

out of the school, I felt I should give something back.” In recogni-

tion of the important role CB has played in his life, Bollinger’s

generous gift will help the school continue to provide that same

formative experience to students today and future generations.

To sum it all up, Bollinger notes, “There’s a real love for the

school by a large cadre of people. I am happy to be able to give

back. It’s a very positive feeling for me to be able to do this.”

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM RECEIVES BOOST FROM ENDOWMENT COMMITMENTS

Recent fundraising efforts were not limited to construction alone.

Through the Securing the Future Campaign – Phase I, Christian

Brothers has received $2.6 million in commitments for the school’s

endowment for tuition assistance. We believe every student,

regardless of economic status, deserves a quality education. With

an enduring commitment to service to the poor, CB is the region’s

leader in tuition assistance, providing $2.8 million to 421 students

in the 2019-20 school year. Nationally, only 51% of low incoming

students attend college. At CB, we are proud to say 99% of our

low-income students attend college. Tuition assistance creates

educational opportunities and breaks the cycle of poverty.

We are grateful to all volunteers and donors at every giving

level for their support of CB in the Securing the Future Campaign –

Phase I. Thank you for helping build the foundation of the

school’s future.

Christian Brothers High School cele-

brated its 143rd commencement on

Friday, May 24, awarding diplomas

to graduating seniors and adding 263

young men and women to its renowned

ranks of alumni.

The day began with Baccalaureate Mass at the

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament officiated by

the Most Reverend Bishop Jaime Soto. Following

mass, graduates and their families enjoyed a

luncheon at school and celebrated graduation that

evening at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium.

The evening proved to be the ideal ending to four

years of hard work and fond memories. Senior

class president, Evdokia Tsiopos (School of the

Art Institute of Chicago) served as master of

ceremonies. Nicholas Kennedy (University of

California, Santa Barbara) provided the salutatory

address with Alanna O’Neill (Pomona College)

serving as valedictorian. CB’s class of 2019

instrumentalists earned a loud roar of applause

for their vibrant rendition of Bruno Mars’

“Finesse” followed by a performance of Charlie

Puth’s “One Call Away” by Honors Vocal Jazz.

Kennedy’s overall theme in his salutatory address

was love, stating “Everything is love. From the

minute I showed up on this campus, I was shown

love. Each and every lunch that I spent with a

new group of people who sat with me and gave

their friendship to me, expecting nothing in

return, was an act of love. The teachers and the

staff who have dedicated their lives to making

Christian Brothers what it is – a community and a

home for so many – have done so out of tremen-

dous love. Every time we showed up to a sporting

event, went to a dance, volunteered or went on

retreat, we did so out of love. All of us, this whole

class, have been so generous and so giving of

ourselves in ways that continue to surprise and

impress me. And I’m comfortable in knowing that

that’s not something that ends tonight. It’s inside

each of us. That love goes wherever we go.”

An alumnus of Christian Brothers, Capogreco

(best known as ‘Cap’) found his way back to

CB unexpectedly.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Spanish from California State

University, Sacramento and later attended school in Guadalajara,

México for his master’s degree in Spanish. Through the program,

he got the opportunity to teach English at a local high school,

where he fell in love with teaching. After completing his master’s

program, he returned to the states and worked in a lumber yard

as he took his passion for teaching to the next level in the

teaching credential program at Chapman University. One day, a

coworker showed him a Spanish teacher job posting, which

happened to be a position at his high school alma mater.

Capogreco made a call to CB, scheduled an interview for the

next day, earned the job on the spot in the fall of 1994, and

hasn’t looked back. “It’s awesome to come back and teach at

2019 Lasallian Educator of the Year

TOMÁS CAPOGRECO ’86

the place I went to and give back to the community that gave

me my high school education,” reflects Capogreco. “I enjoy

working with former teachers.”

During his 26 years at the school, he has taught Spanish II, III,

and IV, and is involved with the KBFT senior video class,

which had begun as a video club in the 90s. Sarah Slakey

Colwell ’99 had asked him to be the club moderator and the

club soon took off in popularity, later being incorporated into

what is now KBFT. Capogreco also formerly moderated the

junior class council, Black Student Union for 10 years,

Lasallian Youth, and the study abroad program where he took

students on Mexican and European learning excursions. He

annually attends the Student Television Network (STN)

Convention for KBFT and currently participates in the

Diversity and Inclusion Committee, VENAVER and Kairos

retreats (even before the Kairos retreat program began),

faculty and staff choir, and performs with students and

Happy Retirement!Thank you Jill Bennett for your 29 years of dedicated

service! We are grateful for your service to the

the many “miracles” you performed. We wish you

St. John Baptist de La Salle

colleagues at Open Mic Night. With music being a large part

of his life, Capogreco is known for incorporating music into his

lesson plans as well.

His ability to connect with students begins instantly in the

classroom. “The most important part about Cap is his heart,” says

Anthony Sweha ’19. “He doesn’t just teach you, he cares about you.

Cap never fails to spread positive energy wherever he is.”

The connection he has with his students extends beyond their four

years at Christian Brothers. When there’s a Wine, Beer & Food

Extravaganza or a CB 10- and 20-year reunion, there’s Capogreco.

“His heart touches everyone with whom he has contact,” notes

Tom English. “This is continually evident in the vast number of

alumni who seek him out at school social functions many years

after they have graduated. The alumni are all there to tell him what

they are doing with their lives and expressing thanks for the

connection he had with them while they were students. And most

importantly, because of his unending care for his students, he is

interested in and cares about everything they are telling him and

everything they are doing.”

Having taken part in a wide variety of activities, groups, and

events, Capogreco has gotten to know a significant number of

students both in and out of the classroom over the years. If it’s

not the rock n’ roll shirt, leather jacket, boots, and the long hair

that people remember about him, it’s certainly the infamous

wall of photos of former and current students in his classroom

dating back to his first year of teaching at CB. What begun

simply as students wanting to bring in and share pictures with

him turned into an elaborate display that everyone wants to be

a part of. “Cap’s wall is the manifestation of his importance to

the CB community: he loves and cherishes the personal bonds

he has with his students,” states Sweha.

Capogreco’s sincere dedication, love, and compassion for his

students, colleagues, and the Christian Brothers community

are among the numerous reasons why he is CB’s 2019 Lasallian

Educator of the Year.

“He doesn’t just teach you, he cares about you. Cap

never fails to spread positive energy wherever he is.”

32nd Annual

The Christian Brothers Wine, Beer

& Food Extravaganza is the annual

party with a purpose that’s not to

be missed.

Each September, CB alumni, friends and families

enjoy a vibrant evening of Sacramento’s excellent

food, libations, entertainment and fellowship.

Attendees enjoyed samples from 53 vendors in

the wine garden and 54 beer garden vendors. In

its 32nd year, the event generated a record-break-

ing $187,000 in support of tuition assistance at CB.

A big thank you to Mike Genovese, Lon Burford '73

and Kelly Brothers for their continued support as

the event's Presenting Sponsor.

Attendees of the Private Reserve Tasting had the

special opportunity to arrive an hour before the

main event and enjoy exclusive food and drinks. A

live performance by Mark Wellendorf ‘83 provided

tunes to set the mood on the Mary Lawn. Rolf

Schumann, Tomas Capogreco ’86 and Christian

Bohm served as “CB-lebrity” bartenders.

The popular Cigar Bar, sponsored by Northern

California Carpenters Union, hosted a variety of

quality cigars and bourbon tastings. The Kyle

Tuttle ‘05 Band provided the entertainment on

the wine lawn stage. Uptown Funk, the electrify-

ing Bruno Mars tribute band from Los Angeles,

performed on the beer garden stage on Koppes

Plaza, resulting in nothing short of fun and

high energy.

“This evening is phenomenal for many reasons, most

importantly the huge impact it has on our tuition

assistance program in supporting and giving more

students the opportunity to have a quality educa-

tion at Christian Brothers," says CB President

Lorcan Barnes. “This event would not have been

possible without the behind the scenes work by

event chair Rick Pires ‘79, Events Coordinator Joan

Schubert ‘00, Director of Advancement Nancy

Smith-Fagan, Director of Alumni Giving Yolanda

Torrecillas, and a dedicated group of alumni,

generous support of the event as well as all of our

sponsors. Thank you to the classes of 1982, 1983,

1984, and 1989, and the Athletic Department for

CB Ambassadors Celebrate the Past, Present and FutureA crisp October evening served as a wonderful

time for the 35th annual Ambassadors’ Club

Dinner at Christian Brothers High School.

The event served as an opportunity for members of the CB

community to express their gratitude and thank those who

have generously supported the school. As the sun was setting,

attendees had a firsthand viewing of the construction of the

Peter P. Bollinger ’57 Stadium. Nancy Smith-Fagan served as

master of ceremonies for the event.

The evening began with remarks from President Lorcan Barnes

and prayer with CB Board of Trustee member, Brother Dan

Morgan, FSC. Following them was a wonderful performance from

Honors Chorale, under the direction of choral director, Christian

Bohm. The students performed several pieces, including “For

Good” from “Wicked” to recognize the donors’ support.

This year’s special Ambassadors of the Year honorees were was

Jerry ’53 and Rosemary Kirrene for their dedication to preserving

and sharing the history of Christian Brothers. Inspired by his

father’s service as The La Salle Club’s longest-serving volunteer,

Jerry assembled a history committee to organize and document

the school’s achievements. A project that has been 10 years in

the making, the CB archives has expanded to an online database

of over 2,000 reference items. Thanks to the dream team of

Jerry and Rosemary, CB’s history and legacy lives on for future

students and guests. Together, they are faithful donors and role

models for philanthropic support.

In the spirit of the evening, various members of the CB community

spoke on behalf of the past, present and future of the school,

including Sal “Chado” Vasquez ’52, Ekenna Anya-Gafu ’10 and

President Lorcan Barnes. In his speech, Anya-Gafu expressed the

impact Christian Brothers had on his life and how it has helped

shape who he is today. He learned important qualities, including

competition and compassion, and how they apply to his life. It was

because of CB that he found good role models who helped him

stay on the right path and people who became like family.

CAMPUS LIFE

Jerry Kirrene ’53 credits his father, Joe Kirrene,

Sr., with inspiring his service to Christian

Brothers High School. Joe, who joined The La

Salle Club as treasurer in 1945, continues to hold

the record as the longest-serving volunteer in

club history with an extraordinary 39 years.

Jerry fondly remembers rolling coins as his father tallied the

profits from La Salle Club Frolics, baseball dinners, coaches’

nights and the like.

“Our dining room was covered with ledgers and notes as my dad

worked on events to help support the school,” said Jerry. “Long

after my brothers (Joe ’49, Robert ’56 and Thomas ’63) and I

graduated, my dad continued the work because he believed in the

work of the Brothers and was happy to support it. In fact, he was

named an honorary alumnus because of his dedicated service.”

That example set into motion a project that has been over a decade

in the making and has necessitated significantly more space than a

kitchen table throughout the years. In 2009, Jerry assembled a

history committee comprised of former students, teachers,

coaches, and parents to launch a comprehensive effort to organize

and document the school’s achievements. Rosemary, Jerry’s wife,

who he describes lovingly as the “wind beneath my wings,”

prepared sumptuous dinners for the group to entice them to attend

meetings. “There is no way this group would have been successful

without her,” enthuses Jerry. “Nobody would have showed up!”

Aided by yearbooks, private scrapbooks, old photographs,

personal testimony, and newspaper articles, the committee put

together detailed historical accounts of football, basketball,

baseball, and the La Salle Club. They collected information on the

medical, scientific, legal, and academic contributions made by CB

graduates. One member of the group, Dr. Bill Iliff ’76, even wrote a

book, the aptly titled “Let Us Remember.”

Jerry also began scanning yearbooks and important documents.

With significant assistance from Thomas Colby ’53, a database was

born. Today, this online archive (www.CBarchives.com) contains

more than 2,000 reference items with more added each week.

“They also collected a large stockpile of school memorabilia that at

one time filled the basement of their home,” says CB President

Lorcan Barnes. “Jerry and Rosemary’s dedication to preserving and

sharing the history of this great school is truly above and beyond.”

“Jerry dedicates at least two days a week to building the archive,”

says Rosemary. “We love the school. It is such an important part

of our family. Jerry, his brothers, our sons (Kenny ’78 and David ’81)

and six of our grandchildren (Kaalen ’13, Mary ’14, Jerett ’15,

Remington ’17, Kamryn ’18 and Keaton ’19) are graduates. Our

son-in-law, Chuck Zannetti, taught there for many years. It’s a

very special place to us.”

In addition to the considerable time dedicated to history

preservation, Jerry also serves as the unofficial president of the

Brotherhoods, a social group of CB graduates who began gathering

monthly, in the name of Christian Brothers, over 45 years ago.

Though its founding members were from the graduating classes of

the 1930s and 1940s, membership today has expanded to include

“youngsters” from the 1950s through the 1980s, with the youngest

member being from the class of 2007.

“I’ve met some incredible people through the Brotherhoods and this

history project,” says Jerry. “I like history. I love the school. Thinking

back, I was not the best student during my years at CB. Thankfully,

the Brothers never gave up on me. Their patient expectations got

me through, and I left CB equipped with an excellent education,

well prepared for college and beyond. As I look back, I appreciate

their caring patience even more. They didn’t just make me a better

student; they made me a better person.”

The legacy of the school not only exists within alumni experiences

but also those currently attending Christian Brothers. History

starts today. “I want younger students to know they are a part of

this incredible legacy,” says Jerry, who also works with freshman

class religion teachers to coordinate alumni visits. “I want the

students to know they are really important to us. Helping them

understand that is really important to me.”

“It’s remarkable to think that what began seventy-four years ago

with ledgers and receipts spread across the Kirrene family’s kitchen

table has evolved into three generations of graduates and a lifetime

of service,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “Thanks to Jerry and

Rosemary, countless CB students, alumni and guests will know they

are a part of something special as their work lives on in the CB

archives and the impressive collection of memorabilia that is now

displayed in various sites throughout our campus. Through the

years, they have been incredibly generous in sharing their time,

talent and treasure in support of our mission. We are profoundly

grateful for all that they have done for CB over the years and on

behalf of the 1,157 students who enter each day to learn, and will

soon leave to serve, I proudly congratulate and humbly thank

Jerry ’53 and Rosemary Kirrene, our 2019 Ambassadors of the Year.”

32 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT

DONOR PROFILE

A recently retired Christian Brothers track and field coach of

15 years, Dan ’72 and his wife, Vickie, are excited about the

future of the school and what the sport can do with a proper

facility thanks to the Securing the Future Campaign. Running has

always been in Dan’s blood. He began running in grade school

and ran track and field and cross country during his time at CB.

He fondly remembers his time as a student-athlete. “My

experience was great. Those were some of the best times of

my life. I ran on the same track almost 50 years ago. The new

all-weather track and synthetic turf field will provide our

athletes with the opportunity to train in all weather conditions.

This will allow our teams to better compete with schools that

already have similar facilities.”

Dan’s experience at CB came full circle when he became a

coach for the sport he was incredibly passionate about. He got

the unique perspective of working with what he describes as

“two types of athletes. Those who were naturally talented and

those who may have struggled at first but improve as they go.

Both types were equally rewarding to coach.”

“Dan’s commitment as a CB coach over the past 15 years was a

labor of love on his part for the school and the students,” says

Vickie. “I know he will miss this connection with the CB

students and staff. While we have consistently donated

financially to CB through the years, Dan’s time as a track and

field distance coach is a great example of the many ways

alumni can give back to the school.”

Not only did Dan retire from coaching, he retired from his

business, Dan Smolich Plumbing, after 30 years. Vickie also

recently retired from her clinical trials work at the UC Davis

Medical Center. Both are currently enjoying the retired life,

spending time more time with family and traveling. They love

coming back and supporting the Falcons at track and field meets

and events, occasionally attend CB’s Alumni Dinner, and often

gather with fellow alumni for lunch every few months.

The Christian Brothers tradition runs deep in the Smolich

family. Dan’s father, Anthony ’41, siblings (Carolyn Meza ’64,

Tom ’67, Beverly ’78, Dave ’84), and members of the couple’s

extended family attended CB. Their two children, Lauren ’10

and Matt ’06, are graduates as well.

Dan ’72 and Vickie SmolichGIVING BACK

“Dan’s commitment as a CB coach over the past

15 years was a labor of love on his part for the

school and the students.”

What is it that makes Dan and Vickie continue to support

Christian Brothers? “Christian Brothers has a long history of

offering a safe and inclusive learning environment,” says Dan.

“As a coach it has been great to see the kids grow and mature

both as students and athletes over their four years. We

appreciate the sense of community the faculty and staff

provide and their emphasis on the development of the whole

person. It’s great to see the improvements to the campus and

we want to continue to support these efforts.” They are

thrilled about the new Peter P. Bollinger ‘57 Stadium and

looking forward to witnessing CB’s student-athletes perform

to their highest ability in the best possibly facility.

38 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT

DONOR PROFILE

With a rich Lasallian family history, it’s no wonder Mike

Stinson ’82 feels connected to Christian Brothers. His father

Mike Stinson ’59, uncle Tom Stinson ’58, godfather Jerry

Stinson ’60, niece and current freshman Alessandra Salvini ’23,

as well as numerous other family members attended Bishop

Armstrong and Christian Brothers High School (with two

nephews and an additional niece as future Falcons). During his

time at CB, Stinson enjoyed playing sports, spending time with

his core group of friends, and going to school dances with

sister schools, Bishop Manogue and St. Francis. After high

school, he continued his Lasallian education and attended

Saint Mary’s College of California where he earned his

bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in communications.

“I had such a connection with the Brothers that St. Mary’s was

the only school that I applied to,” recalls Stinson. “Christian

Brothers and St. Mary’s were a significant part of my

development.” He fondly remembers and credits much of his

personal growth to his CB teachers, particularly Brother

Edward Oliver, Mr. Dennis Eagan, Mr. Jack Witry, Mr. Jack

Papin, Mr. Dave Griffith, and Mr. Steve Crutcher who kept

classes interesting, taught him to think outside of the box

and were people he admired.

Stinson currently owns a swimming pool repair business in

Folsom, Mike the Poolman, initially getting into the field

unexpectedly. After college, he had a successful job in sales

but realized he didn’t have the desire for it. He preferred

working with his hands, leading him to the pool business. It

was then that he found his true calling. “I was a natural at

understanding mechanical concepts and I loved working

outdoors,” says Stinson. “I decided I’d rather be happy and

passionate about my work than miserable with a fat wallet.”

With that passion and the drive to be his own boss, he started

his company in 1995, which continues to grow.

The Lasallian message of serving others has stayed with

Stinson to this day. “I attended CB and St. Mary’s at a very

vulnerable time in my life and I’m indebted to the Christian

Brothers for their guidance and care,” states Stinson. “I could

easily have turned out much differently if it wasn’t for their

love. I would have been lost in a public school and I want

current students of need to have the opportunities I did.”

Stinson makes monthly contributions to the Alumni Fund to

support tuition assistance at Christian Brothers. He empha-

sizes that gifts of any size make a difference.

“We are thankful for the generosity of Mike Stinson and all our

donors,” says Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement.

“We have seen that monthly, recurring gifts are an easy and

manageable way for donors to give. Small monthly donations

contribute to a big impact for CB students.” Thanks to Stinson

and donors like him, Christian Brothers can be a reality for

students, just as it was for his family members and him.

2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT

DONOR PROFILE

Life was not always easy for Judge Troy Nunley and Susan

Lawrence-Nunley ’84, who grew up in less fortunate households

and whose parents sacrificed time and money to put their

children through school. The two have incorporated what they

have learned from their backgrounds, education, values, and

common desire to make a difference in the community in their

lives and line of work today. They have a strong belief in the legacy

of the Brothers and the importance of the Lasallian mission.

Lawrence-Nunley attended Bishop Manogue and Nunley went to

Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco along with

his brothers. The couple met at Saint Mary’s College of California

where they were both English majors. In fact, Lawrence-Nunley

was the first in her family to attend college. Three of their four

children, Cimone ’08, Celeste, and current freshman Dylan ’23,

attended Christian Brothers, as well as Lawrence-Nunley’s

brother, Patrick Lawrence ’87, and uncle Roger Caetano ’53.

The pair instilled a rule for their children that if they did well in

grade school, they could choose where they would go for high

school. “I had always hoped they would choose CB,” says Nunley.

“I like the values the Brothers impressed on me there. Students

learn about various aspects of life – spiritualism, academics, and

how to be a young adult.”

“I wanted them to go to CB because that’s where I went,”

explains Lawrence-Nunley. “Christian Brothers is connected to

the Sacramento community. You learn what it means to give

back and how to be connected to the world. We need more

people to feel connected.”

Nunley is a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of

California, appointed by former U.S. President Barack Obama in

2013. “I have always wanted to be a lawyer,” recalls Nunley. “The

death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deeply influenced me. He

passed away when I was four and my whole family was in tears. I

remember that day – the sense of hopelessness. From that day

forward, I knew I wanted to give back to society.”

Lawrence-Nunley is a real estate agent proudly based in

Sacramento. “I have always wanted to have an impact on the

community,” states Lawrence-Nunley. “I love Sacramento. Home,

family, and community are really important to me. I enjoy

connecting people and helping them find a sense of place within

the community through owning a home.”

The Honorable Troy Nunley and Susan Lawrence-Nunley ‘84MAKING AN IMPACT

Even with full-time jobs and busy schedules, they always find time

to give back to Christian Brothers with their treasure and time.

They contribute through the Annual Giving Program and Parent

Pledge Program. Nunley was involved with CB’s Campus Master

Plan to help enhance the physical structure of the campus.

Lawrence-Nunley recently served on the Auction Committee for

the 2020 “Golden State of Mind” Auction. The couple is looking

forward to being more involved as they get settled into being

current CB parents once again.

What is it that inspires these two parents to give back to Christian

Brothers? For Lawrence-Nunley, it’s the importance of a quality

education. “I know that when I was at Manogue my parents didn’t

have a lot of money. It’s important to have a diverse community.

Everyone should be able to have a good education. You never

really know how much your contribution is going to mean. You

don’t know what kind of difference you’re going to make in

someone’s life.”

For Nunley, it’s the Lasallian mission-centric community at

Christian Brothers. “The vision that Christian Brothers has for its

students is clear to me. The students are going to be leaders in

the community, in all walks of life. I always think it’s important

that we give back to institutions like Christian Brothers. It was

there for me and for other people like me. It was there for people

who may not have had a lot of confidence in themselves. It’s

important to support Christian Brothers to help the school meet

its mission in terms of educating the whole person.”

46 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

Held at Christian Brothers High School on

June 1, the 49th annual Alumni Dinner

was a great night for seeing old friends

and classmates and building on the

strong CB connection.

Alumni, family and friends gathered for a social

hour on the main lawn, complete with dinner and a

raffle held in the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium.

Members of the Class of 1969 were honored with

Golden Diplomas in recognition of 50 years of

shared legacy and spirit.

The Honorary Alumni Award was presented to

Stephanie Cooper-Noe, a proud parent of Dominga

Noe ’11 and Samantha Noe ’18 and an active

member of the Lasallian Parent Ambassadors. She

has been volunteering at CB events since 2007

when Dominga began her freshman year and has

continued her service even after Samantha

graduated. At the ceremony, her daughters

surprised her and presented her with the award.

The Alumni Service Award, the highest award

bestowed by the Alumni Association given to an

individual who regularly gives back to CB and

helps make the community a better place,

was presented to Laine Himmelman ’06.

As the development director at Habitat for

Humanity Greater Sacramento, Himmelman is

responsible for the organization’s public relations

and fundraising efforts. This past spring, she

collaborated with CB and gave the students the

opportunity to work at a Habitat for Humanity

worksite and assist with building homes for

low-income families in the community. She was

also recognized as one of Sacramento’s 40 Under

40 for 2019.

In addition to service at Christian Brothers,

alumni were also recognized for distinguishing

themselves in the professional world and

making an impact. Honored with the Rising

Falcon Award was Viviana Becerra ’09. After

earning her bachelor’s degree in political

science from University of California, Santa

Barbara, Becerra is now the chief of staff at

California State Assembly for Rob Bonta. She is

also a board member of the California Latino

Capitol Association Foundation and has already

had service as a Senate fellow and legislative

advocacy on her resume.

tion that prepares underserved community

members to be journalists, media specialists and

communications professionals. He serves on the

Sacramento Metro Chamber of Directors and the

CARES Strategic Initiative for HIV/AIDS Care and

Prevention Steering Committee. He is a senior

fellow of the American Leadership Forum. In

addition to these accomplishments, Lee has

served on many reputable boards as well.

CB’s spectacular alumni have also made a

significant impact on the history and legacy of

the school’s athletic program. Christian Brothers

Athletics continues, as in the past, to be an

example and a model of a successful athletic

program in the greater Sacramento Area. The

individuals inducted into the 2019 Hall of Fame

helped lay the groundwork for a Christian

Brothers athletic program that has a reputation

for excellence in the Sacramento Area.

The following seven individuals and one team were

inducted into the 2019 CB Athletics Hall of Fame:

JOE KIRRENE ’49

A native of San Francisco, Kirrene was a three-time All-City

Prep baseball player for the Brothers. In his three prep seasons,

he was a part of three Sacramento City Championship teams

from 1947 to 1949, routinely hitting over .400 as the starting

third baseman. After his prep career, Kirrene signed with the

Chicago White Sox in 1950. On October 1, 1950, the regular

season’s final day, he made his major league debut starting at

third base for the White Sox going 1 for 4 with no errors in the

field. Kirrene was out of baseball for three seasons while

serving in the Coast Guard during the Korean War and was

honorably discharged in 1954. Returning to baseball in 1954, he

led the Class A Western League in batting average, hitting .343,

and was selected as the third baseman on the league’s all-star

team. He appeared in nine games for the White Sox that year,

batting .304, six as the starting third baseman, and had three

multi-hit games. He played baseball with the San Francisco

Seals and Oakland Oaks in 1955–56 before leaving professional

baseball. In later years, Joe worked as a manager for California

State Auto Association for 41 years. Kirrene passed away in

2016 and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Grace.

MCNAMARA BROTHERS (JIM ’47, JOHN ’50, AND FRANK ’51)

Jim McNamara ’47 was the starting shortstop for the legendary

1946 undefeated Brothers baseball team. The following year,

he made the All-City team and led Brothers to the City

Championship with a 12 and 4 record. Considered to be one of

the finest fielding shortstops to ever come out of Sacramento,

Jim was drafted by the New York Giants in 1947 and spent five

years in the minors. Jim was inducted into the La Salle Club

Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996 and distinguished himself by

chairing that event for 13 years. Jim passed away in 2012 and

was married to Mildred Petralli for 56 years.

Frank “Muggs” McNamara ’51 was the captain and center

fielder of the 1951 Brothers team. He went on to play two

years at Sacramento City College and hit .360 for the 1953

State Championship team. His baseball career continued at

California State University, Chico where he was once again

voted captain of the team and led them to the Far West

Conference Championship in 1958. Frank hit .316 and made

the All-Conference team. When several professional con-

tracts were offered, Frank chose graduate school and became

an esteemed Sacramento educator for 44 years. He was

inducted into the La Salle Club Hall of Fame in 2000. Frank

has been married to Sally Byrne for 59 years.

John McNamara ’50 was an outstanding defensive catcher for

the Gaels, earning All-City selections in 1949 and 1950. In 1959,

he became a player and manager with Lewiston in the

Northwest League, a minor league affiliate with the Kansas City

A’s. In 1967, John reached the big leagues as a third base coach

for the Kansas City A’s. The team soon moved to Oakland, and

in 1969, he was named manager at the age of 37. He would go

on to manage for 19 years, compiling a record of 1,167 and 1,242,

ranking 48th on the all-time managerial list. He also managed

and/or coached the Giants, Padres, Angels, Reds, Red Sox, and

Indians. John will be most remembered by the 1986 post-sea-

son as the manager of the Boston Red Sox when he earned the

Manager of the Year award. His last year managing was in 1996

with the California Angels.

CHUCK CHATFIELD ’54

Chatfield was a three-year varsity letterman in both football

and baseball with the Brothers, earning All-City in football in

1953. He went on to graduate from College of Pacific in 1958

where he played as a wide receiver and field goal kicker from

1954 to 1958; he was seventh in the nation as a wide receiver

in 1957. Chatfield also played on the baseball team as a

pitcher at COP and was the team MVP in 1958. After graduat-

ing, he coached football and baseball at COP in 1958 and 1959.

He then served as head football coach at Sacramento City

College in 1960. He coached as an assistant coach for

Washington State from 1961 to 1962 and Utah in 1963.

Chatfield also worked for the Dallas Cowboys under Tom

Laundry in 1964 as an assistant coach in charge of player

personnel signing for the Cowboys All-Pros Jethro Pugh and

“Bullet Bob” Hayes, the only athlete to ever win both the Super

Bowl and an Olympic Gold medal. Chatfield lives in Clements,

CA and is the grandfather of 12.

JOSEPH GUTIERREZ ’70

Gutierrez was a three-year All-Star varsity basketball and a

two-year varsity football player for the Falcons. As a basketball

player, he was an All-Metro performer averaging 20.8 points

per game. In football, Gutierrez was a two-time All-City

performer as a receiver; he played in the first Holy Bowl against

Jesuit, which was a 20-13 victory in 1969 in front of 6,000 fans.

In his senior season, the Falcons basketball team managed a

16-6 record although Gutierrez was the only basketball player

over six feet tall. He lists CB Hall of Fame coach, Jack Witry, as

the best coach he played under. After high school, Gutierrez

went on to Santa Clara University where he played football and

basketball and earned his bachelor’s degree in political science.

MONTY BUCKLEY ’91

Buckley was an accomplished track star at Christian Brothers

and is listed four times in CB’s track and field record books

(4th for 200 meters, 2nd in 400 meters, 1st in both 4x100

relay and 4x400 relay). However, Buckley was known mainly

as a basketball star, playing on the varsity team for three

years. As a senior, Buckley was named the Sacramento Metro

Area Player of the Year in 1991. He enjoyed a four-year

scholarship basketball career at UC Berkeley. Buckley helped

Cal win a NCAA basketball tournament game against

defending champion, Duke, by scoring two key three-point

baskets, helping the team advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 on

March 20, 1993. During his Cal career, Buckley was known as

a great defensive player and was named best team defender

in 1992 and 1995. Buckley is in the Cal basketball record book

for points scored in a career: 45th all-time with 1,035 points.

After Cal, Buckley played professionally in the NBA with the

Golden State Warriors and Portland Trail Blazers as well as

internationally in the Philippines and Argentina. Today,

Buckley is a highly regarded basketball trainer and basketball

coach. He has coached nationally ranked AAU basketball

teams and is involved in high level basketball training for

youth in Northern California.

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ’81 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM

This record-setting team was the only team in the Falcons’

varsity football history to win the Metro League championship

title both undefeated and untied in Metro League games; held a

no. 1 ranked Division I varsity football team to zero first downs

for an entire game in the victory over no. 1, Grant, at Hughes

Stadium on November 27, 1981; defeated three Division I

varsity football teams in a season that were ranked no. 1 in the

Sacramento Area at the start of the game; and defeated a

nationally ranked Division I prep no. 2 or higher. The team was

the first in school history to win the Division I Sac-Joaquin

Section title by defeating previously undefeated no. 1, Napa,

14-10 at Hughes Stadium, the first of two Section titles in

school history. This legendary team was also the first team in

school history to win the Sacramento City Championship

defeating no. 1 Grant. The team was honored at the CB vs.

Capital Christian game in September 2019.

A special thank you to the

Alumni Association members

60 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS CONNECTION

John Silva ’98 is remembered by many of his class-

mates as a fun-loving guy with a big heart, and a

smile that lets you know you were in on the joke. He

is also remembered as a man who cared deeply

about his friends, family, and those

in need.

A cause close to John’s heart was the tuition assistance program

at Christian Brothers High School. When he passed away

unexpectedly in 2017 at the age of 37, his friends and classmates

rallied to carry on John’s legacy of helping others by coming

together for two of the things he loved – golf with friends and

tuition assistance at CB. From there, the John Silva ’98 Memorial

Golf Tournament was born.

The tournament, held annually at William Land Park, raises

funds for an endowed scholarship in John’s name. Thank you to

the organizers and participants who came together this past

September for a great time and great cause.

The John Silva ’98 Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide

tuition assistance in perpetuity for students in need. If you

would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, the organizers

invite you to make a gift to Christian Brothers and indicate that

it is for the fund. If you would like to be added to the mailing list

for the next tourney, please call (916) 733-3647 and we will put

you in touch with the organizers.

Our Night with Harry PotterA NARRATIVE BY: TOM JOHNSON

We attended the Christian Brothers

auction and dinner in spring 2019

without much knowledge about Harry

Potter. In short, we didn’t know “the

Sorcerer’s Stone” from “the Order of

Phoenix.” But we have Potter fans in the

family; our children, Clara ’13 and Sean

’22, are both devotees. We knew that

when the auction item for a weekend in

Manhattan, seeing the play, “Harry

Potter and the Cursed Child,” and

meeting James Snyder ’99 came up, we

had to win it and make it a great end of

the summer trip. So, we held up our

paddle long enough and after what felt

like a long few minutes, we had secured

the trip. Little did we know that Snyder

would treat us to an incredible perfor-

mance and a magical evening.

When we arrived, there were hundreds

of people in line for the play already.

There was a certain unmistakable

energy building even outside the

theater. There were serious Potter fans

there and the reviews had been

outstanding; everyone was anticipating

something great. As the stage lights

dimmed and the curtain raised, we saw

Snyder as Harry Potter take to the stage.

In the production, he plays Potter as a

father and husband, looking exactly like

what Potter would look like as a young

father. We were immediately drawn in

by the play, actors and the sheer

wonder of the special effects. At one

moment you could hear a pin drop and

the next, uproarious laughter.

While the play was spectacular, meeting

Snyder after it was quite the VIP

experience. With throngs of people

roped off from the actors, we stepped

through the stage door leading to a

small waiting area with walls decorated

with old playbills and photographs. “You

must be the Johnsons?” Snyder asked

as he welcomed us with a warm smile.

He thanked us for being there and

remarked how nice it was to see people

from home. He was down to earth and

very much interested in Clara, Sean and

their lives.

After meeting, we joined Snyder for

dinner at a famous Broadway theater

district restaurant named Sardi’s, which

is full of images of famous actors,

directors and playwrights. For a night, it

felt like we were part of that history. He

introduced our family to the other

actors, and we even got to meet the

actor who plays Ron Weasley!

As the evening went on, Snyder told us

about his time at Christian Brothers. He

cherished his years at CB, which is where

he first discovered his love for acting. He

got his start by practicing for his first

play on the green linoleum tile of the old

library. After high school, a bigger stage

and city were calling his name. He then

went on to attend University of Southern

California where he studied theater.

After graduation he began his climb into

professional acting. Snyder has seen the

breadth of the world of acting, having

been in movies, on TV shows and in

theatre. He now performs on one of the

biggest stages with a lead role in what is

arguably the most phenomenal theater

venue in the world.

In addition to playing a father and

husband on stage, Snyder is both of

those roles in real life. He, his wife,

Jacqueline, and their children moved to

New York a few years ago. We asked

him how he had time to do these kinds

of meetings and dinners with visitors

from Sacramento with such a busy

schedule. He humbly responded, saying

“I know the motto ‘enter to learn, leave

to serve.’”

Snyder embodies what it means to be

from Christian Brothers and from

Sacramento. He is not only talented and

funny, but also genuine. He gives of his

time and effort for CB despite the

demands of leading in a play of this

magnitude and the enormity of his

success. He continues to serve our

Christian Brothers community and we

couldn’t be prouder.

Tom Johnson is the Christian Brothers head men’s varsity tennis coach.

He and his wife, Maria, are the proud parents of Clara ’13 and Sean ’22. As

a result of the Christian Brothers “One Night in Casablanca” 2019 Auction

and Dinner, his family attended a Broadway production of “Harry Potter

and the Cursed Child” in New York featuring CB’s own James Snyder ’99

in the lead role of Harry Potter.
