Many of you may not be aware of alittle-known service your Societyprovides. AFCDJS maintains an archiveof over 2,400 small band musicarrangements, which we make availableto school and youth bands, community, church, startup, and other non-profitprofessional music groups. Where didthis extensive library come from? Howdo I get my hands on some of thesetunes? How much do they cost? Well,I’m glad you asked!

Set your clocks back 20 years to thespring of 1998. Charles B. Anderson, alifelong musician and longtime collectorof popular music, contacted AFCDJSabout donating two of his massive “fakebooks” and assorted arrangements he’dcompiled over the years. We happilyaccepted, and under the guidance offellow musician and Society mainstayHowie “Wicked Fingers” Nielson, theSmall Band Music Archives were born.

No short essay can do justice toHowie’s work on this endeavor. Hisorganization of the assorted files is awork of art. Filling two full-sized filecabinets, Howie organized every copyof arrangements by name, arranger, type, instrumentation, and source. Hedeveloped his own system for locatingany file at any time. With the burgeoninginternet and email revolution coming on,Howie educated himself on the

The ‘Small Band Music Archives’… what’s that?electronic side of things and soon thebest of 20th Century music was availablethrough 21st Century technology.

Howie continued collecting songsanywhere he could, and made thesefiles available to his fellow musicians, and anyone interested in them. He evenhad a mission statement: “To get asmuch as possible of this great old musicout of dusty storage boxes in the closetand into the hands of musicians at anylevel, but especially young people, whocan help to keep it alive for some whilelonger.” In 2014 Howie retired from theArchives, but (thankfully!) passed

along all of the materials and veryspecific instructions on how tosuccessfully continue this great service.

The Archives, along with being alabor of love, are an amazing collectionof some of the greatest songs of the 20thCentury (and some even older!). Thelibrary is stored electronically, is evergrowing, and tunes can be orderedindividually (and sent over email) or inour very popular “Top 1000” DVD,containing 1000+ of the most requestedsongs.

Looking for a specific song? Startinga new band and need copies ofarrangements? Let us know if we canhelp. Email us at [email protected] the complete index of songs as wellas the “Top 1000” index and a FAQsheet. Requesting copies ofarrangements can be done over email, via our website (www.sdjazzfest.org) orcheck us out on Facebook atw w w . f a c e b o o k . c o m / s m a l l b a n dmusicarchives. Suggested dona-tion perchart is $3.00 or $200.00 for the “Top1000” DVD, with over 1000 great songs(also now available via Dropbox forthose that don’t want to wait for themail!). Every donation that comes ingoes toward our extensive educationprogram, which has paid for camps, classes, materials and instruments formany young recipients, and continuedAFCDJS’s goal to “Keep the MusicAlive.”

Mad Hat Hucksters - May 27The Mad Hat Hucksters was

founded by swing dancer Morgan Dayin 2015. Originally starting out as ajam band that played traditional jazztunes of the 1920s, the band evolvedto find its sound in the musical styleof small combo jazz bands of the 1930sswing era.

The band has performed at manylocal San Diego venues, including theFirehouse Swing Dance, Tio Leo’s,the Hep Spot, and Henry’s Pub, andwere part of the lineup up at the SDJazz Fest in 2016 and 2017.

In November 2017, the Huckstersreleased its debut album “Swing andJazz Music For Dancing,” which canbe found on Bandcamp, iTunes,

Following a stint in the ArmedForces from 1943-45, Gomez workedon the West Coast, with guitaristNappy Lamare, cornetist Pete Dailyand on a European tour with theeccentric reedman “Mezz” Mezzrow. In 1953 he joined Muggsy Spanier’sgroup for two whirlwind years whichinvolved touring, many location jobsand recording sess ions for theWeathers and Decca labels. Theserecord ings i l lus t ra te Gomez’musicality, even at Spanier’s belovedbreakneck tempos. Benny Goodman’sinfluence on Gomez’s style is alsovery apparent th roughout bo thsessions. In December, 1954 Gomezplayed with the Spanier ensemble atClub Hangover in San Francisco, thenstayed on in San Francisco to workwith the band he is most oftenassociated with — Kid Ory’s CreoleJazz Band.

Gomez appeared with Ory on aKCBS broadcast from Club Hangovershortly after he joined the band (itcan be heard at this link: http://w w w . j a z z h o t b i g s t e p . c o m /105801.html). Though Gomez had notyet learned all the Ory band routinesand s ignals , he absorbed themquickly, and also familiarized himselfwith Ory’s extreme use of dynamics. His well-developed ear and musicalinstincts ensured that he alwaysplayed the right thing at the righttime, including perfect harmony partsalongside trumpeter Alvin Alcorn. That was important since in the course

of a single performance, Ory mightdouble the lead, play long lines thatsometimes clashed with the melodyand chords, blow several measures ofstaccato “tailgate” phrases, thengrowl into a mute rather than playingthe traditional trombone counter-point. But Ory’s unpredictabilitynever affected Gomez’s playing.Instead, whether on the broadcasts, live performances or commercialrecordings, he sounds like he ishaving the time of his life. Obviously,Kid Ory appreciated Gomez’ greatmusicianship and esprit-de-corps. Ontheir recording of “Bourbon StreetParade,” when Ory shouts “Take it,Chico!” the pleasure in his voice isevident.

Gomez p layed a number ofengagements at Club Hangover withOry, and also worked with him at theBeverly Cavern in Los Angeles andthe Pioneer Village in Lafayette. Hewas wi th the band when theyperformed onscreen for “The BennyGoodman Story” and on BobbyTroup’s TV show “Stars of Jazz.” In1955 and ’56 he appeared on twooutstanding recording sessions withOry for Good Time Jazz. In 1956,Gomez toured Europe with Ory. Theband was recorded live in Paris at theTheater des Champes Elysees, andalso performed for a French televisionshow. Excerpts from that program maystill be viewed on YouTube andDailyMotion.

After leaving Ory, Gomez workedin Los Angeles with trumpeter AndyBlakeney, who had played with KidOry in the ’40s. His group alsoincluded former Ory sidemen EdGarland and Minor Hall. He playedand recorded with the famous pop-eyed comedian Jerry Colonna (whoalso happened to be a fine Dixielandt rombonis t ) and New Or leanstrumpeter Wingy Manone. In 1959,

he led an excellent group called the“Jazzbos” on a recording session thatresulted in the album “DixielandMambo!”

In later years, Gomez freelanced ina variety of locations, includingArizona, Las Vegas and SouthernCalifornia. He played with groupssuch as the Steamboat Strutters,Igor’s Jazz Cowboys and his ownSwinging Kings. Jazz pianist BillMitchell interviewed Phil Gomez forthe Mississippi Rag, not long beforeGomez passed away in 1992. Fortunately, Gomez’s Good TimeJazz recordings with Ory are relativelyeasy to find online. Look for “ThisKid’s The Greatest,” “The LegendaryKid” and “Kid Ory Favorites.” Thelive recording from Paris is includedin an eight – CD set of Ory’s musicreleased by Mosaic and also on ananthology CD produced by the BritishAvid label. The sessions by MuggsySpanier are available from BillBissonne t te ’ s Jazz Crusade .“Dix ie land Mambo” and therecordings by Wingy Manone andJerry Colonna have not been re-re leased on CD, bu t the LPsoccasionally show up on eBay andAmazon. Also , there a re twobroadcasts from Club Hangoverfeaturing Gomez with Kid Ory at the“Jazz Rhythm” link mentioned above.Phil Gomez’s facile, tasteful clarinetwork is definitely worth the effort tosearch for these recordings!
