The Institute was established in 1970 withUNDP assistance and is intended for trainingspecialists in meteorology, hydrometeorology andagrometeorology at all levels and for undertakingresearch in applied meteorology.

The résearch in applied meteorology which isundertaken is mainly concerned with the problems ofarid or semi-arid zones in the fields of operationalhydrology and agricultural meteorology, and alsowith numerical prediction. The research programmehas been drawn up by agreement with the Technical
