Jeddah to a Brighter Future...

As I turn the pages of my daily calendar, I can’t believe that it’s already December! Ushering in a New Year brings to mind the beautiful memories of 2012 as well

as the excitement of the possibilities that the New Year holds.

As we congratulate each other on the many accomplishments of 2012, it’s necessary that we also evaluate the progress made in our city. Citizens flooded us with their concerns and suggestions as responsible members of a city, which they love. A civil society provides for its citizens, but also requires cooperation from both residents and those with administrative and municipal responsibilities to work together to constantly improve their society. We sincerely hope that the Jeddah municipality will take note of the citizens’ concerns; open communication and collaboration is the path to future success.

This year-end issue of Destination Jeddah is full of news about the events and people in our amazing city… from the inspirational life-story of Shaikh Abdul Rahman Al Sumait, a Muslim in the truest sense of the word, to an inspiring motivational speech from HRH Prince Khalid Al Faisal Al Saud at the i2 inaugural event, which is dedicated to encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation in Jeddah. We celebrate our unique Hijri traditions as we commemorate the Islamic New Year as well. For Jeddahwis who are interested in planning a mini-vacation, check out the Travel section for a fabulous selection of destinations which are all four hours or less from Jeddah. Of course no issue is complete without a nod to our many dining establishments – the Jeddah Eateries 2012 article attempts to do justice to the myriad excellent restaurants in town.

Let’s all pledge to make 2013 a successful and safe year for all of Jeddah.

You Said It Feel moved or mad about something?Let us know!

Believing in magic and miracles was one of the best things in our childhood years. One of the things I miss the most. A child’s lens portrays everything in bright colors and fairy dust, which glues a smile on their faces. As we grow up, we change and unfortunately throughout the process, our smiles fade. Well here is the fun part; did you know that smiling has many benefits? Stress relief, positive energy, a change of mood, boost in your immune system, and much more! And to top all that, smiling is a part of our amazing Islamic religion as our dear Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) advised us to smile in many Hadiths “ Smiling in the face of your brothers is charity” Basically, we, above all people should be the smiling nation. Our streets ought to be bright with different, yet unique smiles. I’m not saying that we should walk around looking like zombies with penalized smiles, but instead we should be fond of smiling at each other, most importantly in places like supermarkets, malls, schools, and basically everywhere. Smiling really does have a strong power, so come on smiling peeps; let’s all brighten up our community with unlimited smiles. Let’s start this year fresh, with an enormous amount of smiles. Join us at Red Sea Mall (December 19th & 20th) and help me, Alanoud Abduljawad, in building the hugest wall of smiles! Lets spread happiness with positive energy. Girls and Guys, it is simply easier to smile than to frown, after all, the world is a lens so please smile :)

TO PONDERTHOUGHTS

Thumbs Up to...‘The Help Center’

Whether it’s cigarettes or shisha, smoking is a bad habit. It not only affects smokers, but also the surrounding people. The fact that Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s leading consumers of cigarettes raises red flags regarding properly educating society about the risks of smoking. According to recent statistics, the number of Saudi teenage smokers is rising. Shops that sell tobacco and café’s that offer shisha must ask for ID’s in order to minimize the number of teenage purchasers. Recently, a ban on smoking has been implemented. Whether it’s cigarettes or shisha, smoking is no longer allowed at restaurants and coffee shops in Jeddah. Rather than completely banning smoking, restaurants and coffee shops should have smoking and non-smoking sections. With the smoking ban, businesses face a great

loss since the majority of their customers are smokers. A popular shisha café already lost more than 80% of their customers since the ban was implemented. We hope the number of smokers decreases, but we also think it is not fair to completely ban smoking suddenly. I don’t believe we should be against the ban in any way or form, even though I am a smoker and I don’t like it but its a good thing and about time, people will get use to it and businesses that make money on the account of people’s health should be closed, so please change that whole part from sympathizing with smokers and business owners to ways in how to cope with the new law, change the type of business, make more outdoor options, or simply STOP SMOKING!

One of the main issues facing Jeddahwis is finding a housekeeper. It’s becoming harder and harder to find help in this matter; it’s like finding your true soul mate which happens once in a lifetime! Unfortunately the dearth of professional companies that actually deliver what they promise does not alleviate this problem. In this day and age, a company, which provides trustworthy, reliable domestic help, should be available in Jeddah, especially with so many dual-income families where both the husband and wife work outside the home. We hope that companies take this matter more seriously and provide an easy and safe service that would make life easier for working Jeddahwis.

Useful Information

Regardless of how we spend our money, deep down we all have a soft spot for people less fortunate than us. The Help Center is a non-profit organization, which consists of people dedicated to improving the quality of life of individuals with any sort of disability, whether it is intellectual or physical. The ‘Be With Me Campaign,’ has always been highly active in charity events, and has recently collaborated with the Help Center for a common cause. They are currently on a mission to raise as many water bottle caps as they possibly can. Their goal is to collect 1,000 caps and sell them to the recycling company; with the money they receive from the company, they will purchase a wheelchair for a disabled individual. By supporting them and their families, with time, the world will become a better place for all kinds of people.

Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Sumait is an extraordinary human being who dedicated his life to doing good deeds. This man should be acknowledged and known for the major impact he had on millions of lives, not only in his hometown, but also worldwide.

Al Sumait is an Islamic scholar, a medical practitioner, and a role model for all Muslims. Born and raised in Kuwait, he was a qualified doctor specializing in internal diseases and gastroenterology before becoming involved in charity work. He graduated from the University of Baghdad with a BS in Medicine and Surgery, a diploma in Tropical Diseases from the University of Liverpool in 1974, and then completed his postgraduate studies specializing in internal diseases and the digestive system at McGill University in Canada. By the time he was 35 years old, he decided to move and live in Africa, and he dedicated 29 years of his life there with his wife, contributing and helping millions of children with education, starvation, shelter, and religion.

As a young high school student in Kuwait, Al Sumait witnessed a scene outside his school that sparked his interest in helping the less fortunate, and his life changed forever. He observed poor workers waiting for their means of transportation in the heat on a daily basis, and with some friends decided to save up from their pocket money and purchase an affordable car, and from that day onwards, he drove these workers for free.

At university Al Sumait used the majority of his monthly salary to purchase Islamic books and would distribute them at mosques. He also took part in collecting money from fellow Muslim students and all together they used the money to pay for the printing and distribution of Islamic pamphlets throughout South East Asia and Africa.

Al Sumait’s interest in Africa was ignited when he felt and saw that the continent of Africa was being neglected. Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and Angola, among many other nations in the area that were suffering from famine, hunger and disease, were the focus of Al Sumait’s operations.

In 1981, when he was just 35 years old, he established the Africa Muslims Agency (AMA -later renamed Direct-Aid), where he served as chairman from 1981 to 2008. AMA is a charity organization that operates in more than 40 countries worldwide and aims to provide assistance to people suffering from economic and social crisis, mainly in Africa.

Upon his arrival to Africa, he was deeply saddened by the scenes of hunger and disease, so he decided to sacrifice his profession and dedicate himself fully to their benefit. Twenty-nine years of Al Sumait’s life was spent in undertaking charitable works in Africa, only returning to Kuwait for short visits or to receive medical treatment; he was on a mission to assist those in need.

He sacrificed his life, time, skills and efforts to provide people less fortunate with a decent life. Al Sumait also initiated a variety of projects in addition to Direct-Aid, which helped underprivileged people with the sole aim of easing their life from poverty.

Although Al Sumait’s journey in Africa was a major success, it was anything but smooth. Due to his time in Africa, he took numerous trips deep into the African jungles in order to conduct his work; with time he got high blood pressure, diabetes, a number of blood clots, and malaria, among other diseases. He was also the target of several failed assassination attempts by armed militias who were disturbed by his overwhelming presence and the impact he had on the poor and needy. In Mozambique, Kenya, and Malawi, Al Sumait went through more than one near-death experience with deadly cobras. And he also had to experience the adversities of imprisonment at some point in his life. However, he still remained determined to fulfill and accomplish his aim of bringing peace, aid, and relief to Africa, whether it was with food, shelter, education, or religion.

Throughout his life, Dr. Al Sumait’s efforts in charity work were recognized and acknowledged with honors, awards, trophies, and certificates, including the highly prestigious award, the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam. Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Sumait is a remarkable man, truly an inspiration, and the definition

of a true Muslim. He sacrificed his entire being for the benefit of others. His time and efforts are visible today and will always be visible, especially in the children of Africa who continue to receive education at various universities throughout the whole continent. May Allah bless his soul and reward him immensely for the great life he leads. Amen.

However, people are still in the dark regarding a number of issues. Citizens need and want to know more, because of their love for the city, and their concern for its future and their own. So we took the liberty of conducting a survey and distributed it amongst locals, regarding their concerns with the city municipality. Therefore we are hoping the municipality, led by his excellency Dr. Hani Aburas, will address these issues and take advantage of this opportunity to shed light on the challenges the public is concerned with.

Jeddah, “the Bride of the Red Sea,” is and has always been, one of the most beautiful cities within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is a city that embraces diversity and welcomes tourists from all over the world. Recently, Jeddah has been going through some positive impressive changes within its many streets. Citizens have been pleased with the new developments that have been occurring, such as bridges, public parks, and the new Corniche we are all looking forward to seeing. We are all optimistic, and thankful for the many changes that will lead to a better future, and a better Jeddah.

Citizens’ Concerns

Based on the feedback we received from the survey we conducted with Jeddah’s citizens, some of the main issues locals are concerned with:

• Garbage bins• Littering• Street beggars• Unexpected construction• Public parks• Flooding caused by heavy rain

Just like every problem has a solution, every issue can be fixed. Jeddah is a city with so much potential. We, as citizens of our beloved Jeddah, should join hands and work together to reach our mutual goal which is to make Jeddah a better place, and help it reach its full potential.

Suggested SolutionsOne of Jeddah’s main issues is the garbage disposals and littering; unfortunately garbage bins tend to overflow before they are collected, and therefore some areas are becoming dumping sites. In order to avoid that unpleasant scene, rather than wait for the bins to get collected, simply dial 940 and make a complaint.

In regards to the disturbing litter all over Jeddah’s streets, we hope the law will be implemented, and people who litter will finally be fined. In the meantime, neighborhoods can collaborate and assign a different member per month from their district, to be on neighborhood watch duty for littering and vandalism. We can also put our heads together and initiate campaigns on recycling, littering, water usage, and green living.

Another displeasing issue we face in Jeddah is the increasing number of beggars on the streets. We are urging people to stop encouraging them by giving them money. If you want to donate money, or give to the less fortunate, there are charities made for that. Street beggars are beginning to show signs of violence such as slamming on cars and opening car doors. These actions jeopardize our children’s safety and could lead to terrible consequences.

Unfortunately in Jeddah, it is normal to wake up to unannounced construction workers digging holes right in front of your home or workplace without prior notice! However, rather than just complain to your friends and family, dial 940 and make a complaint. This sort of behavior may affect businesses in terms of parking spaces and convenience, but with a notice letter in

Citizens’ Suggest• Public campaigns in the local media announcing the municipality’s future projects, affected areas, and duration.• The use of urban gondolas or Metrocables for cost effective and quick public transportation.• Covering play structures with sun shades at public parks.• Designate a specific time of the day for waste trucks and all other trucks in order to avoid rush hours and tragic accidents.• Install more speed bumps, especially around school areas.• Severe penalty for contractors and maintenance companies.• Reviving and activating the role of neighborhood centers.

advance, business owners will have time to make their necessary arrangements. We do not mind the construction as much as not being notified in advance.

Citizens of Jeddah, this city is our home. If we do not take good care of it, no one will.

There are a number of unfortunate issues that require immediate attention in the city, some of which can be taken care of by us, the people, and some only by the municipality and government officials. We wholeheartedly hope our opinions and suggestions regarding improvements in our city are taken into consideration, and we hope to see a better Jeddah inthe upcoming future.

November 16-17 marked the beginning of a journey of discovering and building opportunities for the hidden talents within our community. The Institute for Imagination and Ingenuity (i2) aims to empower young innovators, and create a bridge for them to cross and find access to new opportunities through education and inspiration on the other side.

Dr. Hayat Sindi, the founder and CEO of i2, is one of the world’s leading biotechnologists, the first female from the GCC to earn a PhD in Biotechnology, an MIT and Harvard graduate, and an inspiration to us all. She embarked on her journey of self-discovery when she was a teenager, and with hard work, motivation, and determination, she is the woman we see and admire today. Her reason behind creating i2 is to make success stories like hers a possibility for every young entrepreneur.

The inaugural event took place at the Hilton Hotel in Jeddah, on November 16 and 17, with the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al Faisal Al Saud. Speakers from all around the world flew in to share

with us their opinions and success stories regarding innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship. A few of the speakers at the event included Mohamed Al-Mady, CEO of SABIC, Esther Dyson, Chairman of EDventure Holdings, and Robert Fabricant, Vice President of Creative at Frog.

Topics of discussion at the event were the various barriers to entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia. Challenges entrepreneurs may face in Jeddah range from fear of failure, lack of potential investors, or the lack of formal business skills. In order to overcome those barriers, i2 aims to provide young innovators with the right resources and provide them with the opportunity to live up to their potential.

We envision a world in which the only barrier to an innovator’s success is the quality of his or her ideas.

Esther Dyson shared a truly inspiring story in which she compared a product with soup; if you like your soup, keep making more and more soup. She went on further to explain why you would need to build a company to produce more soup. Truly an inspiring story, explaining in simple terms that when an entrepreneur begins his or her journey, they will begin with a small product or service such as soup. With time, dedication, determination, and the right resources and mentoring, it will expand and become a success.

Entrepreneurs are highly encouraged to plan and execute their ideas once they have a vision and an aim. The five factors that determine the success of an entrepreneur are as follows: the quality of their business idea, it needs to be a suitable for the needs of the Middle East, entrepreneurs must have role models, a strong support network, and excellence in the delivery process. Jeddah does not lack entrepreneurs or young creative minds. What we lack is a motivating and supporting team that will guide us along on the right path to success. Young Jeddawi innovators can see the light at the end of the tunnel, they just need a little push to walk through and reach the other side.

In 1976, the North Campus (NCS) was built in order to accommodate the rising number of students, by 1985 the school changed their name to Saudia-Saudi Arabian International School, and by the year 2000-2001 it had its first 12th grade graduation, and became the first international school in Jeddah that had a diploma program. The school changed

its name to the American International School of Jeddah (AISJ) in 2004, after Saudia officially announced that they would no longer continue their sponsorship of the school due to their need to focus solely on the airline business. AISJ started in 1952 with just 40 students in a house, and now have over 1,100 students.

AISJ has come a long way since it was founded in 1952. It all started in 1945, when King Abdul Aziz received a DC-3 aircraft as a gift from US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This gift led to the development of a civil aviation, the beginning of Saudi Arabian Airlines, and a signed contract with TransWorld Airlines (TWA) to manage the airline. The signing of the contract brought with it job opportunities and led to the arrival of many expatriates entering the city. The lack of a formal American curriculum school in Jeddah was an issue TWA employees faced because they needed schools for their children. Parents then formed the Parents Cooperative School (PCS, founded in 1952), in which they volunteered to teach students using a home school curriculum. When the expatriate community kept expanding with time, the school began to notice a rapid growth, and therefore built a new facility in 1968, and again in 1975.

AISJ is what it is today because of the hard-working, ambitious and determined staff, parent board, and alumni. The school has recently celebrated their 60th anniversary by hosting a Gala Dinner at the school on November 26. In order to mark this milestone achievement, AISJ is planning a yearlong series of activities. The first of these events and programs is the launch of their new building for middle school, and the launch of the AISJ Alumni Association. Alumni are extremely important assets to the school because they represent the past and future of AISJ. One of the many projects for the Alumni Association is the AISJ Stories Project, in which students, staff, and alumni can record and share personal stories and experiences they had with the school. Many benefits come along with this project, including getting back in touch with your circle of friends and teachers from school, and re-living your experiences. The association also plans to provide AISJ students with scholarships, financial support to the school, and highlight distinguished alumna/alumnus at an annual commencement.

The American International School is, and has always been, on a mission to promote academic excellence, and inspire their students to develop themselves and become critical thinkers and future leaders. AISJ staff members are united by a set of shared

visions and goals that provide them with the determination to transfer a set of skills on to their students. They have excelled at doing so for years now, and are a proud international academic institution that aims to shape their students in a way that ensures their success after graduation. AISJ students graduate from their school knowing that they have been well prepared to face life after school, and all the obstacles that come with it.

We wanted to escape the heat of Jeddah so what better place to go to than to the coldest place in Saudi Arabia which is in the Asir region called Jabal Sawdah sometimes written as Jabal Soodah, which literally means Black Mountain. With a height of approximately 3000 meters (9842 feet) it is the highest mountain of the Kingdom. It is part of the Sarawat mountain range that stretches from Jordan running through Saudi Arabia and ends in Yemen. The Sawdah peak boasts of beautiful views and incredible weather making it one of the best tourist spots in Saudi Arabia.

We set off early in the morning and we opted to go to Abha, which is around 25 km from Jabal Sawdah using the route through Taif rather than the Jizan Highway, as we wanted to explore the mountainous region along our journey. It turned out to be a very good decision as we travelled through some of the most beautiful valleys and were able to visit many interesting villages on the way. We also had a great time gorging on the food available in these different villages. After the long 9-hour journey that had some of the most dangerous curves, the sharpest ascents and descents we finally reached Jabal Sawdah. To my surprise there were many hotels located close to it of all price ranges to suit different traveler’s different requirements from low budget local ones to high budget five star hotels such as the Intercontinental Hotel. When we reached we were extremely tired so we decided to take a hotel to rest and decided to visit the peak the following day.

The next morning we found our way to the peak of Jabal Sawdah and once on top we

saw an amazing view unlike no other in all of Saudi Arabia. We saw the rugged yet beautiful mountains that pervaded the landscape, the misty clouds combing the hills, the meager sunrays trying to pierce through the clouds, it reminded me that it is the first time I am witnessing such a sight in Saudi Arabia.

The peak offers a spectacular view of the scenic villages located deep inside the valley that probably enjoy pleasant weather all year long and it also offered an amazing view of the twisty roads that run across the mountains, to observe them was mind boggling as it made us wonder on how we reached the top safely. As the weather was pretty cold it allowed us to enjoy the hot tea more as the combination does not get better than drinking a cup of hot tea in cold weather enjoying the beautiful view all at the same time.

There are plenty of red-bottomed longhaired baboons which one is bound to spot, as there are countless numbers of them that reside in the mountains. It was nice to see the tourists

playing with them and giving them food and water. And to my surprise they were pretty tourist friendly.

There is a cable car or a gondola as some people may call it which is moderately priced at SAR 45 that takes you down the valley from Jabal Sawdah and back to the top, which gives a fantastic experience as it offers a closer view of the rugged mountain peaks along with a sight of dramatic escarpments that are adorned with lush green vegetation.

Jabal Sawdah is becoming increasingly popular due to its close proximity to the cities of Abha and Khamis Mushayt. Most tourists visit Jabal Sawdah during the Abha summer festival and there are a lot of paragliding activities that take place on Jabal Sawdah at that time.

Located nearby Jabal Sawdah is an old Ottoman fort though currently in ruins it’s still worth a visit. It will take a small trek to reach the fort, once inside one can observe the granary, the armory and the Ottoman graveyards that are designated by their respective distorted sandstone burial markers, which pervade the fort.

On the whole Jabal Sawdah is an amazing weekend destination, it gives a remarkable experience that allows travelers to give into Mother Nature, enjoy the spectacular view, decompress, relax, and of course enjoy the pleasant weather.

It’s pretty fabulous that our culture gets to celebrate two new years. Maybe if someone fails on a resolution they started in January, they can restart it in Muharram? To some, the New Year symbolizes a fresh start and exciting new endeavors, to others it’s just another time where we replace those tiresome small Arabic calendars that we have to flip every day or mistakenly write 1433 and cross it out in our notebooks during the first week. In the end, something’s different and it suddenly feels like we’re being pushed into the future and we’re in a new chapter of our lives and thinking, “I can’t believe it’s 1434!” How weird – but let’s have some almond coffee.

Before we go into more of the traditions, let’s take a look at how our Hijri calendar is so unique. It was in 622 AD that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) migrated from Makkah to Medina. The Hijri calendar is a lunar one, which means that each month begins with a new moon. The Gregorian calendar is solar because it is tied to the seasons to ensure that the Christian Easter Holidays fall on the spring equinox (the first day of Spring - March 21st) every year. Although marked by Islamic significance and history, the Hijri New Year is not a religious holiday. However it is a time when Muslims reflect on the migration of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), the struggles of establishing Islam and the effort (or ‘jihad’) Muslims go through to adhere to their faith.

There’s also a celebratory side to the Hijri New Year. It’s a time when people send greetings and call each other up to give their new year wishes and prayers. Some people in Jeddah also have a fun colorful little tradition: On Muharram 1st, they drink a glass of milk in the morning so that the rest of the year is pure and white, they eat something green (Mulukhia is a big favorite) for lunch so that the rest of the year is green (not as in environmentally friendly green, but more as in blessed green) and then later on, they drink some almond coffee (which is also very popular). Some people also like to have some honey so that, well, the New Year would be just as sweet! HAPPY NEW HIJRI YEAR

Jeddah also has some even quirkier and older Hijri New Year traditions; these are mostly done to prevent negatives from happening throughout the year. To avoid being in many tiresome situations such as vacuuming/cleaning the house or lighting the fire, people would not do those specific things on Muharram 1st. The idea is to not do a foreboding act that will ripple throughout the entire year. Another old, although perhaps inappropriate, tradition is not going to a funeral on the first day. And similarly to the ones practiced today, this last one includes having 7 pieces of fruit to sweeten the year.

At the beginning of a new year, a whole 12-month period lies mysteriously and excitingly ahead. And there’s no better way to celebrate than by sticking to traditions, which are just really there to cement relationships together and thus remind us what’s important. New years can be a serious thought provoking time and holiday, but what’s a holiday without getting together over a pot of almond coffee.

5 restaurants I loved I had dinner at Amara with a few of the women I met at the Entrepreneurs Conference and I adored the food and the way it was presented. When in Jeddah one must have a quick bite to eat at Al Baik, the chicken is delicious! Vera Pizza was my favorite spot for Italian, Wakame for sushi and Ice land for fruity lollies ice-cream flavor post dinner.

5 stylish boutiques I visited I spent some time at Ana ‘3air mall, where I checked out so many cool boutiques like Sotra boutique, which has an amazing arrangement that I loved, it felt like I was in London’s Westbourne Grove.

I also liked Alathaar shop and gallery. I attended Tanween Boutique designed by Ghalia of Al-Ghalia Interiors! I was only in Jeddah for a short while, but managed to explore so many of the cool underground boutiques. I still think there is more to see and definitely worth another visit.

My 48 hours in JeddahIt is always great to travel with a purpose of visit. I was lucky enough to be invited as one of the speakers and presenters at the Jeddah Entrepreneurs Week held by the PR team Traccs which brought an amazing blend of successful entrepreneurs to share their story and career choices.

Through the event I met so many interesting, strong, powerful women who have invested so much in their education and are making such diversified career choices that the conversation is constant and interesting.

My first impression of Jeddah Jeddah was a delightful shock to me; the society was open minded, friendly, multi cultured, and full of energy. There is a great deal of activity by locals; everyone is brimming with ideas and passion in what they do. I also felt free walking around on my own and exploring the city by myself. There is so much to see, the city is bursting with holes in the walls, fresh concepts, and cool creative working in attractive studios. I really cannot wait to come back, especially as I hear great things regarding the Red Sea for diving.

I would love to take from Jeddah… The great support and funding entrepreneurs are receiving in Jeddah. I single handedly saw ministers having one on one sessions

with people of a young age of 18, as they tried to problem solve key issues in the ministry that prevented many from starting businesses. There is a positive community of women trying to break boundaries and venture into less crowded industries.

Where I see my magazine in 5 yearsI see it in print being distributed all over the GCC, and hopefully in key spots in the US, UK, Japan, Brazil, and India. We have such a strong and loyal fan base; it would be great to be able to offer them something tangible to purchase and collect. Our contributors come from over 15 different countries and I feel like my goal is to increase the growth of the Sketchbook family year by year and to continue the support and growth of our strong community of designers through our network.

Ginza i Chome: A Name You Can TrustThe name Ginza i Chome is derived from Ginza, the oldest district in Japan. Ginza is known worldwide for its luxurious lifestyle; its name represents upscale shopping, entertainment, and most importantly dining. Ginza i Chome is located on the second floor of the luxurious Rosewood Corniche. Seating areas at the restaurant overlook the beautiful Red Sea, allowing customers to enjoy divine Japanese cuisine while they enjoy the breathtaking view.

Upon your arrival to Ginza i Chome, you will be given the option to sit either at a private table, or at the long bar that spans the length of the restaurant through the middle. As you walk through to your seat, a wave of relaxation and serenity will overcome you due to their subtle dim lights and cozy ambience. The restaurant adopts the Omakase concept, which means you “have trust in the chef.” If you choose to experience this intriguing concept, you will be seated at the bar, and the chef will prepare your meal in front of you. This concept gives customers an opportunity to bond with the chef, which makes the whole experience even more delightful. The Ginza chef will simply ask you if you have any allergies, and based on your reply, he will whip up nothing but authentic Japanese cuisine that will allow you to live a true Japanese cuisine experience on another level!

The Ginza chef has been awarded a Gold medal for the Best Sushi in Saudi Arabia at the Horeca contest in Riyadh 2011, and indeed he is worthy of the medal. He personally prepares sushi using only high quality crabs and salmon imported from the Atlantic Ocean, Nishiki (premium sushi rice), and soy (shoyu) sauce imported from Japan. The vinegar he uses is imported from Mizkan (pronounced Mitsukan), which is a Japanese company that produces vinegar. At Ginza i Chome, authenticity and superb quality are guaranteed.

December is an exciting time for Ginza i Chome’s staff, and sushi lovers because it marks the beginning of their all-you-can eat “Sushi Sensation” promotion, beginning from the first Monday in December, from 7:30 pm till 12:30 am. With just 225 SR, you will indulge in a delicious steaming bowl of Miso soup, followed by a choice of the absolutely exquisite Japanese King Crab Salad or the deliciously green and dressed Japanese Caesar Salad, which will leave you wanting more. As tempting as it is, don’t get filled up with the soup and fresh salads

because it gets better. When the sushi platter is set in front of you, you won’t know where to start! The platter consists of all types of sushi including spicy and non-spicy Maki rolls, Sashimi, and Nigiri, all of which consist of a delicious variety of shrimp, tuna, salmon, and crab. At the center of the platter, in between what appears to be sushi heaven, you’ll find a generous amount of Gari (ginger) and Wasabi. To top it all off, the promotion also includes soft drinks and water.

At Ginza i Chome, there’s an option to suit all tastes. Whether you are a vegetarian, or you like your meals spicy or mild, you’ll find your perfect match here. In addition to “Sushi Sensation” there’s the a la carte menu that includes a wide range of tantalizing options such as different types of tempuras, noodles, and teriyakis. Ginza i Chome is a must-try for all sushi lovers out there. The exquisite taste, the friendly and welcoming staff, the restaurants ambience; truly a memorable experience.

Back in 1919 in the Italian city of Bologna, two families joined forces and founded one of the most ancient coffee roasters in Italy. They were mainly focused at providing their excellent quality products to hotels, restaurants, and cafes. However, since 2006 they have been building the brand and began to expand to foreign countries. Those two families are Filicori and Zecchini, and until today they run the business. Since the beginning of the year 2012, we have had this little part of Italy right here in Jeddah, at Red Sea Mall.

Filicori Zecchini: An Italian Experience!

Located conveniently between gates 4A and 4B, right below the Frozen Yogurt Factory, Filicori and Zecchini occupies a spacious yet cozy area of the mall. They are the best in town!

Since the best is always saved till the end, before you leave the restaurant you absolutely must have something sweet from their “Cafeteria Creativa” menu. Just like the name suggests, this menu offers creative mixes, drinks, and desserts. For example, for fans of mint-chocolate, the After Eight Cialdino would be perfect since it consists of espresso, hazelnut syrup, a delicious crunchy biscuit wrapped in chocolate, mint flavor and leaves, and finally shredded cacao sprinkled on top! If that’s not enough, try their signature Dish Coffee, which is a beautiful long plate with four empty spaces;

one for fresh fruits, one for cream, one for chocolate sauce, and the last space is filled with espresso covered with biscuits.

Filicori Zecchini’s selection of coffee and tea is believed to be among the best in Italy. Their tea flavors vary from fruity, minty, to honey sweet, depending on what you’re in the mood for. The aroma of their coffee alone will have you ordering more than once! Once you have that first sip of their coffee, you will realize what real coffee should taste like. In case you want to take some home, which you will, they have their coffee beans and tea selection on sale at the bar. Don’t forget to get yours on your way out!

Leqaona MaqdesiOur Islam, our religion. It calls us to defense. It calls us to peace. The first Kiblah CALLS. The third Holy Mosque SCREAMS. Is there amongst us an ANSWER!Fatima Al Zanan

Leqaona Maqdesi is a foundation that organizes the best youth cultural projects in Jeddah, as it spreads awareness to the Palestinian cause. This project was founded by the youth for the youth.

The title of their cause is derived from the Arabic words leqa’t means meetings and moqaddas means sacredness. In short, Leqaona Maqdesi is a series of meetings, each of which comprise lectures, intellectual dialogues, and projects that serve the cause. Our long-term goal is an academy that graduates young influential leaders who will be able to defend the Palestinian cause through developing persuasive dialogues and real projects that support it.

Leqaona Maqdesi is divided into two parts, Academic which they achieve through lectures that help obtain information about particular Palestinian topics that serve the cause and Intellectual Dialogue that deals with the main issues regarding the Palestinian cause. The purpose is to acquire a certain level of advanced cognitive knowledge, and therefore produce practical projects to serve the cause.

Throughout history, one question in specific has been frequently asked, “What can one person do?” Unfortunately people in general, the media, schools and the entire society chose to shut down this topic feeling helpless towards it and literally submitting that it’s not in their hand, but we know that it isn’t so…

To answer this question, Einstein, Newton, Gandhi, Salah Al-Deen, and on top of them all, The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions showed us the way. History proves to us that one person CAN DO SOMETHING.

One of the questions asked from one individual “If you ask any Muslim, in your opinion what is the Ummah’s most important cause?” a reflex response would be, “To free Palestine; to free Al-Quds.” Then if you ask them, “What have you done for it?” Their faces would have a blank expression and they would say NOTHING” - This is just one question asked by Malath Huwait, a team member of Leqaona Maqdesi. Another team member, Tamara Ajeeb says, “Leqaona Maqdesi is the product of our belief that we must DO SOMETHING for Palestine.”

This amazing organization hopes to create an intellectual dialogue that will transcend and enrich our knowledge of the Palestinian cause to produce practical projects for the victory of Palestine. Their long-term goal is to create an academy that graduates young influential leaders who will be able to continuously serve the Palestinian cause by educating more people and sustaining old projects and developing new ones.

TIPS• over-washiNg: Don’t over-wash your hair! Using shampoo daily will strip your hair of its natural oils, which are the best moisturizers for your hair.• read the iNgredieNts: When reading the back of our products half the time we don’t even understand what they are! Harsh chemicals along with other ingredients can lead to frizziness. Try to avoid hair products that contain sodium, calcium, lye and lithium hydroxide. Many OIL based conditioners can also contribute to frizzy hair.• over styliNg: Too much of a good thing, can become bad. Excessive blow-drying and hair straightening is a big cause of frizziness. Give your hair a break and try to air dry it as much as possible.

Here are some Natural Remedies, Product advice and Helpful Tips on how to tame frizzy hair:

Natural Remedies• Mix together some extra virgin olive oil and an egg to create a paste. Apply it all over your hair and let it sit for half an hour. Use your regular shampoo and conditioner to rinse out the mixture.

• Smooth out the cuticles of your hair by using vinegar to achieve an appropriate PH balance.

• Mayonnaise can really help calm down frizzy hair. Mix one cup of mayonnaise with ½ an avocado to form a paste. Apply evenly all over, and then cover your hair with a plastic shower cap. Then, wrap a heated towel around it. Twenty minutes later, wash it out. Apply once a week.

• Mix together ½ cup of Olive oil and ½ cup coconut oil. Heat and apply all over, focusing on the roots. Cover with plastic and wrap a heated towel around it. The longer you leave this mixture the better (30 minutes minimum). Reheat the towel as needed because you will require constant heat. Shampoo and rinse with cold water for best results.

In-Store ConditionerMany women tend to skip conditioner because they think their hair will fall. This is a myth. Use a moisturizing conditioner to calm down frizzy hair. Just apply on the ends and avoid the roots. Look for coconut or castor oil in the list of ingredients.

TOP DANGEROUS FOOD PRESERVATIVES

5We are all naïve regarding how much coloring and food preservatives are added into our food. Sur-prisingly in Jeddah most of us don’t know the dangers of consuming foods with additives. Although not all preservatives are dangerous and there are natural additives such as sugar, and salt, nowa-

days, most people tend to eat the ready-made food available in the market, rather than preparing it at home. Such foods contain some kind of preservatives, so that their quality and flavor is maintained

and bacteria and yeasts do not spoil them. More than 3000 additives as well as preservatives are available in the market, which are used as antioxidants and anti-microbial agents. At DJ we have

broken down the top five additives to look out for when consuming your everyday foods.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a highly refined artificial sweetener, which has become the number one source of calories in most countries such as Saudi Arabia. It is found in almost all processed foods. HFCS packs on the pounds faster than any other ingredient, increases your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, and contributes to the development of diabetes and tissue damage, among other harmful effects.Found in: Most processed foods, breads, candy, flavored yogurts, salad dressings, canned vegetables, and cereals

1. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and many restaurant foods. MSG is known as an excitotoxin, a substance that overexcites cells to the point of damage or death. Studies show that regular consumption of MSG may result in adverse side effects, which include depression, disorientation, eye damage, fatigue, headaches, and obesity. MSG affects the neurological pathways of the brain and disengages the '' I'm full'' function, which explain the effects of weight gain.Found in: Chinese food, chips, cookies, seasonings, most Campbell Soup products, frozen dinners, lunchmeats

2. MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE (MSG / E621)

Aspartame is believed to be carcinogenic and accounts for more reports of adverse reactions than all other foods and food additives combined. Aspartame is a neurotoxin and carcinogen. Known to erode intelligence and affect short-term memory, the components of this toxic sweetener may lead to a wide variety of ailments including brain tumor, diseases like lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue, emotional disorders like depression and anxiety attacks, dizziness, headaches, nausea, mental confusion, migraines and seizures. Acesulfame-K, a relatively new artificial sweetener found in baking goods, gum and gelatin, has not been thoroughly tested and has been linked to kidney tumors. Found in: Food labeled diet or sugar free sodas, diet Coke, Coke zero, jello (and over gelatins), desserts, sugar free gum, drink mixes, baking goods, table top sweeteners, cereal, breath mints, pudding, ice tea, chewable vitamins, toothpaste

3. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

Trans fat is used to enhance and extend the shelf life of food products and is among the most dan-gerous substances that you can consume. Found in deep-fried fast foods and certain processed foods made with margarine or partially hydroge-nated vegetable oils, trans fats are formed by a process called hydrogenation. Numerous studies show that trans fat increases LDL cholesterol lev-els while decreasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol, increases the risk of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes, and contributes to increased inflam-mation, diabetes and other health problems. Oils and fat are now forbidden on the Danish market if they contain trans fatty acids exceeding 2 percent, a move that effectively bans partially hydroge-nated oils.Found in: margarine, chips, crackers, baked goods and fast foods

4. TRANS FAT

Blue #1 and Blue #2 (E133)Banned in Norway, Finland and France. May cause chromosomal damageFound in: Candy, cereal, soft drinks, sports drinks and pet foods

Red dye # 3 also Red #40 a more current dye (E124)Has been proven to cause thyroid cancer and chromosomal damage in laboratory animals, may also interfere with brain-nerve transmissionFound in: Fruit cocktail, maraschino cherries, cherry pie mix, ice cream, candy, bakery products and more!

Yellow #6 (E110) and Yellow Tartrazine (E102)Banned in Norway and Sweden. Increases the number of kidney and adrenal gland tumors in laboratory animals, may cause chromosomal damage.Found in: American cheese, macaroni and cheese, candy and carbonated beverages, lemonade and more!

Studies show that artificial colorings, which are found in soda, fruit juices and salad dressings, may contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ. Animal studies have linked other food colorings to cancer. Watch out for these ones:

materials:Clean glass baby food jars (labels removed), paint, and a shallow bowl.

method:1. Pour out some paint into the bowl – you don’t need much, maybe 1/2 cup or so.

2. While holding the bowl on an angle, dip the jar in, and begin slowly turning the jar as it touches the paint.

3. Sit the jars right side up to dry, perhaps overnight. It’s important to let them dry right side up first so that no paint drips in the wrong direction.

4. Turn the jars over for a few more hours to let the bottom dry.

Fill with flowers or tea lights, and let the celebrations begin!

Paint-dipped Baby Food JarsAlmost nothing creates a magical atmosphere more than colorful twinkling lights and patterned decorations. And if you’re bored with your old ones and you don’t want to purchase new ones, why not try to make something fabulous at home. Anyone with a baby knows how quickly those glass baby food jars can fill up the recycling bin, so stock a few and start your own crafty and ‘green’ decorations!

Health care has leaped tremendously in providing service through a vast range of advancements and breakthroughs. Informatics has moulded the shape of modern medicine… fast, reliable and more service-oriented both in the physical setting and the cyberspace.

Since its start in 2007, First Scan is, indeed, always on the “go”. being the first and fully-equipped radiology center in Saudi Arabia, it has kept its stature as the center known for high-end radiological services where patient experience is at its best… where technology meets ultimate care… where speed meets quality.

Through its Jeddah and Makkah sites, and soon in other places within the kingdom, expansion of service is part of the plan not for anything else but to be able to exist according to its mission of providing quality care to a much wider coverage of clients. Indeed, the First Scan Radiology Center is your first step for cure!

In a short span of time, it has achieved a lot… state-of-the-art radiology equipment, advanced information technology through its RIS and PACS system, and continuous education, all of these topped by optimal quality care. It is also on the verge of conquering other areas of service though its online medical transcription and remote image access for physicians and patients. As it serves with compassion, cArES for your health, AImS for quality, and NurTurES your well being, the center will always be your partner in health care and is always proudradiologically yours… the First Scan!

Unfortunately, cancer has become part of our lives, people all around the world are trying to raise awareness, find a cure and make their voice heard to the world. A lot of organizations have worked so hard for this issue by spreading the word around and raising money to help cancer foundations find a cure for cancer patients through their campaigns and one of those campaigns is the Movember Campaign that started back in 2003 in Australia. Each year during the month of November men across the world grow their moustaches to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Each year during the entire month of November you find people across the globe walking, talking and promoting this important matter.

This amazing campaign has inspired Jeddahwis to raise their own campaign locally and try to alert people regarding the unknown threat, which is the prostate cancer that is neglected because most men are embarrassed to talk about it. This campaign is a new way for approaching this important issue and giving people the chance to understand its danger and help with the matter. This campaign is called “The Moshaneb Campaign” created by Libra Productions and Infra Red Studios. Their aim is to encourage our society through entertainment to get involved and try to do something for this matter. These campaigns should be an inspiration to all of us; all we have to do is spread the word
