As the winter winds become a distant memory, I feel like throwing open my windows and welcom-ing the warmth of springtime into my home! March is a wonderful opportunity to spring-clean, which ties in perfectly with our ‘Green’ theme of the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse, and recycle. Once you’ve cleared away the cobwebs and indulged in some necessary de-cluttering, you may be tempted to buy some fresh new clothes, plant a garden, or visit some exciting new dining spots as part of turning over a new leaf.

Active minds, active bodies, active hands – there’s no excuse not to get involved with one of the many incredible charities around Jeddah. Select a cause you’re interested in so that you’ll truly immerse yourself in the enjoyable experience of making new friends while helping others in need.

If you feel like a change of scenery, Madein Saleh remains the top destination for visitors and locals alike. The opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the ancients is a humbling, yet inspirational experience. Closer to home, a visit to an authentic ‘attarah’ shop will transport you back in time in an entirely different manner – the scents and the sights are reminiscent of souks of a bygone era. After these expeditions, pick up ‘Sara’s Junk’ for a mental exploration inside a uniquely captivating mind. Jeddahahwis continue to push the envelope when it comes to art of all forms!

Thumbs up to...

An exciting and encouraging step to sustain our city’s environment is the new recycling bins placed in the long park along Al-Andalus St. the one across from the wide spaced roundabout with the gigantic lanterns. Funded by the Saudi Envrionmental Society and SEPCO Environment and the Saudi Gov. (Al-Amana), three bins a set, each color designated to contain different types of trash: Paper/Plastic, Food/Plants and Cans. Many families gather there in the evenings in the lovely area where there are playgrounds and colorfully planted flowers. It’s highly encouraging that there will be kids there who will ask about these bins and will hopefully understand the significance of their purpose and perhaps make a habit out of using them.

Public Recycling Bins - Finally!

Where are the Recycling Bins Around Here?

Fed up with stacks of old newspapers and plastic grocery bags full of even more plastic grocery bags piling up around you? Do you feel like your trash is reproducing while you’re asleep? Moving to the Middle East from a country where recycling is de rigeur can seem like a shock to your routine – but Jeddah is jumping on the eco-bandwagon. You can begin by reducing the amount of waste you bring into your home by overseeing the bagging of your groceries & encouraging

the bagger to place more than 1 item into each plastic bag! Collect unwanted bags for deposit in Panda’s or Danube’s recycling bins. If you receive a daily newspaper – make sure to collect a week’s worth & then donate them to a recycling station. Arrange for a regular recycling pick-up of your reusable paper or plastic items – it’s more convenient and affordable than ever. Alternatively, raise awareness at your children’s school, your office, or your gym by encouraging them to station recycling bins for public usage on their premises. Awareness leads to action.

In our community, through decades of industrial developments, littering has become an unconscious habit. Citizens litter from cars, at parks and even into the sea. This pollution affects our health, reverses the efforts such as the parks, causes an awful stench and makes us resent this city we call our home. So it’s unfortunate that there isn’t a preventative system such as Saher against littering, taking a stricter approach could yield better results. Singapore and Malaysia have succeeded in doing it and so can we. Jeddah would be much lovelier with cleaner streets and fresher air; and people must remember that when they don’t litter, they are doing it for themselves.

Littering - It’s Time To StopThumbs Down to...

Finished Unpacking? Start Volunteering!

One of the best ways to become acclimatized to a new place is to meet the locals whenever possible…especially the people who are passionate about the topics which are near and dear to your heart. A great introduction to Jeddah’s environmentally conscious crowd is by volunteering with any of the ‘Green’ organizations which are springing up all over town – some have been quietly working for years as unsung heroes, while others are newer – but all of them have wonderful initiatives and ideas to help transform Jeddah into the ‘Greenest City by the Red Sea’. If eco-issues aren’t your priority, then try pitching in with any one of the worthy charitable organizations listed below, or start a collection drive to donate clothes, toys, or medicines which are always in high demand. Start small and dream big!

Talk to your neighbors about recycling or read the newspaper to learn about city wide events such as a Corniche Clean-Up, anti-pollution campaigns, and even youth-led marches which highlight causes around Jeddah. Keep an eye on your children’s schools as they are all committed to highlighting student’s efforts through education, school events, and extra credit projects. Businesses across Jeddah alreadyincorporate eco-friendly programs as part of their overall Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, so investigate what’s going on in all the companies you come across. Hospitals and clinics are interestedin tour guides, volunteers to staff

information booths, or even people to visit patients in open wards.

Newcomers often send in questions to Destination Jeddah requesting information about non-profit groups or charities in Jeddah. Depending upon your unique skill set, people with a multitude of backgrounds are welcomed across all levels. The desire to volunteer is evident, sometimes it’s only a matter of learning about the myriad

avenues which are available…so select a group, roll up your sleeves, and enjoy yourself!

Profile:Who: Dr. Majdah Aburas What: Board member of SENS and Assistant Professor at KAU Education: Ph.D in Biotechnology and Environmental Microbiology, Honor Fellow of the International Federation of Professional and Business WomenFamily: Blessed with four children

Dr. Majdah Aburas dreamt of creating an environmental committee in Saudi Arabia and in 2006, presented her proposal to Prince Turki bin Nasser. He told her that he had envisioned the creation of such an organization and the proposal had come at the right time. Dr. Aburas then went on to become the head of the women’s division and a board member of the newly created Saudi Environmental Society (SENS).

While finishing up her PhD in Biotechnology and Environmental Microbiology from Surrey University in 2010, she received the Honor Fellowship, a prestigious award which enabeled her to research solutions for KSA’s environmrntal problems. She returned to Jeddah and took on the responsibility of transforming SENS and reorganizing their ideas and priorities by placing educating the public at the very top of her agenda. Her work and passionate drive comes as a great and comforting relief to the community’s environmental concerns. Dr. Aburas is now the Deputy Executive Manager and President of the Women’s Division of SENS as well as an Assistant Professor in the Microbiology and Biotechnology Department at KAU. She has received international praise and recognition for her efforts and has participated in

strategy to acquaint younger generations with public transportation while reducing current levels of air pollution.

Dr. Aburas hopes to remind the citizens of Jeddah of their role in taking care of the environment as the city becomes a more congested urban space. People with actively negative behavior who not only liter, but also empty the new recycling bins, uproot flowers,.. etc. harmfully reverse the process. Dr. Aburas believes if these selfish habits don’t change then matters will become worse.

She would like to send out a message to the community that, while officials have their part, each person has a duty to their community, their family and themselves. Don’t underestimate the power we have over our country and home she says, and that anyone can join the SENS, but everyone should take care of our environment on their own. Dr. Aburas remainins optimistic about Jeddah’s present and future, and has high hopes for the people of her beloved city.

different humanitarian projects. With her global outlook and invaluable input, SENS is now in tune with the environmental developments of the rest of the world and has a blueprint for environmental improvements throughout KSA. SENS organizes environmental forums in Jeddah which attract local and international environmental experts. They’re also in charge of Saudi’s Earth Day events and the prized Eco-Label stamp of approval. In the long-term, Dr. Aburas hopes the SENS will be able to influence nationwide laws and regulations on pollution.

To achieve long-term results, SENS emphasizes on the education and awareness building among Saudis youth. One of Dr. Aburas’s and SENS’s most significant projects is the Environmental School SENSE. In collaboration with the Zainal group and invested by the national government, an awareness curriculum was created to be applied to all of KSA’s schools; so far it is implemented in 60 public schools in Jeddah and counting. The programs are customized for each grade and instill ‘green’ habits within the educational framework and with an emphasis on personal responsibility.

The program teaches children to recycle, avoid littering and wasting water and electricity, compost rubbish and learn how to plant. The school buildings will also be ‘green,’ minimizing waste, using low CO2 light bulbs and installing proper ventilation - thus teaching the kids to maintain a healthy living environment. There’s also an emphasis on voluntary work and how the environment is the long-term goal in order to foster sustainable health and wellbeing for the community.

Dr. Aburas feels that the biggest environmental problems Jeddah faces are air pollution, water waste from factories, and the sewage system. Water waste also affects the soil and ruins the organisms in the sea, while increased traffic and mobility causes even more pollution with car exhaust. Initiatives for public schools to use school buses are in discussion as a

The Saudi Green Revolution Week was a virtual social initiative by Naqa’a Environmental Enterprise that took place from January 18th to January 26th, a movement of young people united to elevate the public’s awareness on the neglected environmental issues in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Green Revolution Week

Each day the initiative handled a different topic and provided relevant short, fun and straightforward tips, videos or articles and shared lesser-known facts about Saudi in both Arabic and English. The aim this year was to ‘break the ice’ for a large range of topics, from water and energy conservation and management to the environment and Islam. The Green Week was a campaign of awakenings, new beginnings and hope for a healthier and cleaner Saudi. The campaign may have been for a week, but the Green Revolution is an ongoing movement towards an eco-friendly society.

of life in other countries. Sadly, in Saudi ”Going Green” is not just a strange concept but perhaps a laughable idea. When in fact, Jeddah alone ranks among the highest polluted cities in the world. Every year millions of tons of resources that could be reused are wasted.

It’s an issue that deeply affects us all; we all live in this environment together, and Naqa’a have helped us to protect it ourselves, and there’s no reason for the Saudi citizen not to take matters into their own hands.

Maximizing the utilization of used materials and waste by processing them into new products.

Reducing pollution from the rapidly growing landfills.Reducing energy consumption when manufacturing new materials.Saving businesses money on new materials.Saving natural resources.

Jeddah’s community is increasingly realizing the benefits of recycling, from households to businesses - and it has never been easier or more urgent. There is an overflow of garbage in the streets and landfills are threatening the quality of air and water we use, and the problem cannot be ignored. Recycling is a foreign practice that became common in other parts of the world when it had to, and as a prolonged result of the industrial revolution, it’s time for Saudis to be concerned as well.

A safe and clean living space is about being at peace with our environment and present surroundings. No matter how much money someone has, it won’t make a difference to their comfort if they don’t maintain a healthy and pleasant living space. The environment is the larger living space that we all share together and people are mad that these simple polluting habits could be so damaging.

People are always complaining about the lack of maintenance on our environment, but we all have our own part to do and inspire others in the process. It’s very simple, do you like trash around you? Your children? In the air your breathe? To even look at in the streets? We already have a barren and overheated landscape. Why are we damaging what we already have and not maximizing the potential? It may not be the most convenient habit to pick up, but if enough people start recycling, an easier system could be implemented in the future.

There are some amazing new recycling services that are making it easy for households and business to participate. Destination Jeddah has ccreated a comprehensive recyclying guide for you to show how easy recycling here can be. Find out what you can do and dont forget to encourage your friends and families!

Step1: Separate Your Recyclable MaterialsThis process could not be any easier. It’s just a slight change in the process of taking care of your home that takes getting used to. You just need to use your trash bins differently. It might seem like a hassle to have a lot of bins taking up space, but you could use smaller bins or a large garbage bag and place them in a convenient area.

cavern with four human-sized recesses. The walls bore signs of chiseling, like crosshatch artwork. Carved out of solid rock, the tombs were located in clusters of tens. We wandered from tomb to tomb, marveling at the designers’ skill and diligence. Some were larger than others, some more ornate, but all had the same basic architecture. However, Qasr al-Fareed, seemingly carved from a single monolithic rock, stood forlornly by itself in the middle of a plain. It was beautiful, but in a melancholic way. “All civilizations die,” we mused. “Will we one day be remembered for our architectural ingenuity, as we remember the Nabateans?”

We reminisced again of waning empires at the Madain Saleh Hejaz Railway station. Inside, a garishly renovated train engine was all that remained of the Ottoman dream of linking Mecca and Damascus by rail one day. On the road to Tabuk, we stopped for tea with our gracious police escorts. Outside, the moon darkened unhurriedly. Under a crisp desert sky, we silently witnessed a lunar eclipse and Saudi Arabia’s austere natural beauty…still withstanding the sands of time and echoing of the past grandeur of bygone civilizations.

Attarah has a long history which flourished under the scientific breakthroughs taking place in the early days of the Islamic empire. Going Through Sarah's JunkBy Rayan Khayat

It's a pleasant thing when someone from our community has written and published their own book, especially when it's from someone as young and creative as Ms. Sarah Taibah, *ahem* I mean Lastika. 'Kinda bilingual' and wholly composed of her own illustrations, Junk is a messy collage scrapbook of a diary to be shared. Part autobiography and part a letter to the world around her, Ms.Taibah uses clever expressions and black ball-point sketches to create this book of scattered ponderings and bittersweet musings.

DESTINATION JEDDAH34

On a special Saturday over Turkish coffee with a skeptical friend, Ms. Taibah’s “brain was working in a sweet way…[she] could eat it.” She remembered some of her old scanned illustrations and decided to draw some more and maybe, just maybe, she could create a book *WHOA.* Her friend laughed, “Make a book?” Taibah said “Fine. I’ll make a book.”

Unfortunately, she sometimes finds her doodles in the trash and once in the kitchen garbage can. “MAMA WHY?!!!” Her lovely mother replied “Sorry baby, I thought it was just junk.” That’s when Ms. Taibah realized she must organize all of these penned thoughts and ideas. And although she named it Junk, to appropriately encompass all of the randomness; the result is a disorderly harmonious and composed piece of work.

The comical illustrations in Junk are visually striking, with a style that’s half political cartoon and half school-day doodles, but as the book progresses we gain more of an insight into what these little stories are trying to reveal. Her quirky little characters seem to be fed up with the frivolities and contradictions of their society and are attempting to live through the perplexities of modern life by questioning and attempts at understanding. It’s as if they’re caught between a supposedly ‘real’ but bizarre world and their own imaginary yet sensible one.

Characters along the way include the Lonely Ice-Cream Cone, Octopus Girl and a thieving ninja. Ms. Taibah also reconciles these illustrated conflicts with musical lyrics brightly come to life, whimsically detailed food recipes and more of what truly holds all of this clutter together.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 35

DESTINATION JEDDAH36

In the introduction, Ms. Taibah recounts the story of a girl who used to live in this curious purple bubble where everything seemed to be almost too special and ideal. She had some really colorful and feathery friends with her but somehow it just didn’t quite work out. And even though she now has to make her way through a bleak and thorny wasteland, far from the purple perspective she’s familiar with, she’s able to share some of the wonderful things she saw in there with even better and ‘realer’ friends. And her so-called ‘junk’ is... actually what she brought with her.

Its strategy is to exhibit the works of various independent designers every two months under one theme to expand their support and maintain an exciting customer experience in a museum-like arena. ‘The Secret Garden’ was hosted from December to January and the next theme, Nuqta, opens on February 13th till mid April, 2012. This event will feature a new dynamic group of up and coming designers and artists. 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The Red Sea is undeniably one of our community’s treasures, it’s where we get away, cool off and have our adventures. Naturally, living in a desert means that taking tace of our water resources is vital and that we musn’t take them for granted. Due to its relatively small size, limited circulation and unique habitat, the Red Sea is particularly vulnerable to the damages of pollution. It’s such a simple and cost free effort to avoid littering the sea, but it becomes a price to pay in the future by hindering our dependence, and ability to enjoy our beloved sea.

LIVEGREEN

An increasingly urgent issue is the accumulating trash in the narrow Ubhur bay where many favorite resorts are. It’s consequently become a heavily polluted area that could quickly resemble a landfill. Because toxic addictives leach out from pollutants and drift into the sea and the pollution also increases the temperature of the waters, the waters will gradually spoil and won’t be a safe, clean or enjoyable area to swim in anymore. In addition, cabins and resorts are becoming ridiculously expensive because they have to maintain a clean beach, which requires a great deal of effort.

The coastlines are also piling up with marine debris. Oil, power, desalination and other industrial activities near the coast have led to sewage outflows. And if you’re wondering why it’s taking so long for the anticipated North Corniche developments to reach completion; one of the biggest reasons is removing the accumulation of trash that continues to pile up on the shoreline. Plastic bags and discarded food products have left a filthy coastline infested with cats and rodents.

The health of marine life is another casualty. As the sea’s ecosystem is contaminated, the quality of marine food resources (that are a favorite in Jeddah), will deplete. What happens is that toxic and poisonous heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, commonly leach out from pollutants and are ingested by fish. The accumulation of trash piling up on the sea floor also damages the health of the plant life and decreases oxygen levels that is vital to the health of fish and various sea creatures. Reassuringly, the Saudi Marine Society was established last month to battle pollution in the Red Sea and conserve marine habitats. Initiatives and efforts are starting up all over the country, yet they’re all saying the same thing, that there wouldn’t be a problem if individuals and citizens were more aware of the larger problems they can cause. People tend to think that a seemingly small contribution won’t make a difference, but we know that’s not true. Cigarettes filters and beverage cans amount for most of water pollution, so if people manage to avoid tossing just those common items, it will make a significant difference. Think ahead and think of yourself, your family and friends. We depend on the Red Sea in the most essential ways, it’s a real shame not to preserve and appreciate this blessing.

WHAT YOU CAN DO?• Use a trash bag when picnicking by the seacollect all your litter – watch out for the wind!

• Ask the owner and staff of beach resorts to put up a sign prohibiting littering in the sea.

• Smokers should have something to use as an ashtray.

• Contact SENS and find out about clean-up campaigns.

SENS (Saudi Environmental Society) Tel: 02 6996193Email: [email protected]

• Rent Duffy Boats, which have zero gas emissions and are electrically powered.

• Owners and employees of factories and plants located on the coast must investigate the company’s waste methods.

• Print out the flyer in the back of DJ map, distribute at the beach, marinas and dive shops.

Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the owners wanted to create a restaurant where you could eat organically on-the-go, because there usually aren’t plenty of options. Pizza Fusion was developed to be an environmentally conscious and organic business with a perfectly healthy and rich menu.

In 2009, Samir Food Co., Ltd. of the Samir Group brought the franchise to Saudi to introduce a more socially conscious approach to restaurant service. Saudi Arabia also happens to be the first and, so far, only international expansion of Pizza Fusion since being available in only 4 states in the US. So it’s a special deal that we have here! Why Saudi? Randy Romano, executive vice president of sales claims that “After much evaluation, Samir Food has shown to be a solid candidate with demonstrated business expertise and a socially conscious mindset,” while Georges Chaoul, business development manager at Samir Food Co, Ltd. claims that “Pizza Fusion combines a cutting edge concept, which we feel is the future of the pizza restaurant industry.”

Their menu is as delectable and diverse as any restaurant could be. They offer salads, sandwiches and a good number of delicious and familiar pastas like carbonaras and lasagnas. For their fantastic pizzas, there’s the choice between original organic white and multi-grain crust and the usual tomato sauce or an adventurous BBQ based-version. All of the pizzas have an original and delicious mozzarella, provolone and parmesan cheese blend and the pizzas are cut into perfectly proportioned square slices.

Pizza Fusion has all your favorite pizza dishes like classic pepperoni and BBQ chicken, but their menu gives a new experience to eating pizza with their signature combinations. Their farmer’s market pizza is a veggie feast with roasted zucchini, artichoke hearts and roasted Portobello, and the founder’s pie has free-range chicken, kalamata olives, roasted red onion and gorgonzola. The sausage & tricolor pepper pizza has a great juicy flavor and texture with sweet Italian sausage, roasted tricolor peppers and chili flakes.

There are many great dishes and flavors to try on their menu but of course you can always create & build your own pizza as well. For dessert, they have all-natural flavored ice creams, along with carrot cakes, apple pies, homemade brownies and chocolate chip cookies. They also offer Boylan’s natural soda in root beer and black cherry flavors and different cocktails such as apple fusion sangria and Pizza Fusion cocktail.

Pizza Fusion has proved to be a great success in the past two years and has developed 8 branches in Jeddah & Riyadh with a great reputation and a strong following. It is also quickly becoming a common opinion that Pizza Fusion has the freshest and most delicious pizza around!

Chef Tarik Afifi Mohammad aims to create a unique and unexpected menu with experimental and unique flavors. He worked with customers from around the world at his time in Harrods in London to successfully concoct innovative dishes to suit his audience’s tastes. Along with the owner, Zaki Moustafa Idrees of local restaurants Tempura and Osaka, Chef Mohammad has scoped the range of Jeddah’s Asian restaurants to familiarize himself with what the community likes and says he feels confident that T.Y. Lounge offers an exciting and uniquely flavorful dining experience.

Menu highlights include the Tarabani with Black Bean Sauce and the bursting and spicy Seafood Noodles. Chef Mohammad specializes in creating sauces that complement and enhance seafood flavors, and he always maintains the seafood’s freshness by avoiding frozen products. Their Sago Rice Fruit Shot dessert/appetizers are an unusually refreshing effort and their

popular Tempura is a juicy and perfectly flaky new take on an old favorite. Mr. Idrees and Chef Mohammad work tirelessly to create a special menu sure to please diners with its originality, and even though they experiment with presentation for visual delight, their unique dishes aren’t just for the adventurous - they are created to satisfy their customer’s appetites in style.

When someone says “live organic”… do you start imagining an idyllic green dream of a lush paradise with unicorns and soothing harp music? Can we find this in Jeddah? DJ takes you as close to that “organic land” as possible with an in depth exploration of Manuel and Danube supermarkets’ healthy/organic selections. Losing weight and living healthy can start at the supermarket. Change your groceries - change your habits. Here are 5 tips to shop smart, eat healthy, and enjoy your paradise on Earth.

The first meal of the day is important to raise your blood sugar levels, rev up your metabolism, and supply you with the energy to last till lunch! If breakfast means granola (fiber can help digestion, relieve constipation and prevent diseases like colon cancer), first read the list of ingredients to ensure you select a low-fat, low-calorie product. Sadly, many varieties of granola taste delicious because they are extremely fattening! In general, granola/muesli has more nuts, dried fruits and whole grains than the high sugars andpreservatives in many of the commercial cereal brands. But choosing an affordable and healthy one can be achallenge. Dorset Flakes fits the bill in terms of taste, variety, and price. Get some fiber and lose all that sugarin one simple step!

Are you guilty of leaving chips, cakes, cookies, and chocolates lying around the house? Hit the fruits and veggies section and pick up some bananas, apples, and other favorite fruits. Also make sure

you get some carrots and cucumbers and celery to cut up into snack-size pieces. Last but not least, head

over to the dried fruit/nut section and stock up - make your own creative mix. A variety of snacks will help you improve your intake of vitamins and fiber while reducing your intake of fats and sugars. Save the tempting ‘C’ treats as a weekend indulgence.

Organic breakfast – granola or muesli?

Healthy snacks

Healthy bread The beauty of Manuel's is that they have their own bakeries…saving you from the big, bad monster of processed and refined breads. Their German baker Nikoulas Gosselk offers a selection of tastes including honey and walnuts, oats, raisins and more. The variety is interesting and soft, and you get to watch the men in action. Avoid the high glycemic index bland white breads in favor of a whole-grain variety chock full of nuts instead. Spoil your taste buds with something you've never tasted before – it’ll tempt you back into the world of healthy carbohydrates.

Food Network star Emril Lagasse uses his catch phrase “BAM!” Naked Chef Jamie Oliver says there are three things that can make anything taste heavenly; lemons, chili, and olive oil – we can’t live without our spices! If you’re looking for something to dip your bread in or as a replacement for a fattening salad dressing, try olive oil and balsamic vinegar with the addition of chili and spices. Any brand of olive oil is preferable to mayonnaise-based salad spreads or salad dressings, plus youcan mix up your ownfavorite flavors.Try marinating withtomatoes, basil, and rosemary instead ofpre-mixed marinades.

Organic lunches and dinners

Many brands of brown rice and brown pasta taste similar to their white flour counterparts. Some actually impart an addictive nutty taste to your protein man-dishes. Reducing your consumption of ‘white’carbohydrates and replacing them with ‘brown’ alternatives, especially organic ones which are available at both Manuel’s and Danube, will save you calories while aiding your digestion, and still taste delish.

Anita Roddick was a human rights activist and environmental campaigner who started the Body Shop in 1976. She wanted to start a business which would “Make Profit with Principal,” which is the underlying core of the business today. The Body Shop was one of the first to ban the use of ingredients tested on animals and one of the first to promote fair trade with third world countries. Over the years they have developed great products that are both effective and ethical.

The Body Shop strongly believes that there is only one way to be beautiful, nature’s way. They constantly search for impressive ingredients from all four corners of the globe. They bring you skin care, body care and makeup full of effectiveness to enhance your natural beauty. Whilst doing this, they have always strived to protect the beautiful planet in which we live in today and the people who truly depend on it.

“I just want The Body Shop to be the best, most breathlessly exciting company – and one that changes the way business is carried out. That is my vision.”

The Body Shop is different then most cosmetic companies. The way they do business, the way they make products, the way they source ingredients, the way they use their “voice”… they are different because of their values. THE BODY SHOP IS A COMPANY BASED ON PRINCIPALS AND HAS 5

Anita Roddick - Human Rights Activist. Founder of The Body Shop.

CORE VALUES INTEGRATED DEEPLY INTO THEIR BUSINESS:

1. AGAINST ANIMAL TESTING The Body Shop was the first international cosmetics brand to be recognized under the Humane Cosmetics Standard for their strict policies against testing on animals. Every single one of their products is animal cruelty free and vegetarian!

2.SUPPORT COMMUNITY FAIR TRADE Deeply committed to the cause for over 20 years - The Body Shop set up their very own fair trade program called Community Fair Trade. Today Community Fair Trade works with over 30 suppliers in more then 20 countries, which provides over 25,000 people across the globe with essential income to build their futures.

Anita Roddick3. ACTIVATE SELF ESTEEM The Body Shop believes that true beauty comes from confidence, vitality and inner wellbeing. Their philosophy is that “looking good stems directly from feeling good”. They strive to bring products that enhance your natural beauty and express your unique personality.

4. DEFEND HUMAN RIGHTS Since 1994 The Body Shop has helped to raise funds and global awareness for domestic violence. Other campaigns, which The Body Shop funds are: fighting human trafficking and human, civil and environmental protection across the globe.

5. PROTECT OUR PLANET As a global business, The Body Shop is constantly seeking new ways to improve their business practices. They have strict targets to reduce energy, waste and

water use. Every product they use has consequences for the planet, which is why they have the “ECO-Conscious” Symbol displayed at their stores. They respect the aquatic environment, meet strict biodegradable standards and limit packaging waste to name a few of their efforts.

The Body Shop Jeddah has also been doing its part by sponsoring recycling projects around town and is keen to help local organizations, which will help to make Jeddah “more green”. The Body Shop Foundation was set up in 1990 as a registered charity, which supports pioneering front line organizations that often fall outside the scope of conventional fundraising. They focus on issues such as human rights, the environment and animal protection.

“For me, campaigning and good business is also about putting forward solutions, not just opposing destructive practices or human rights abuses.

New and exciting changes are coming to The Body Shop as they unfold their “new expression”. Not too much can be said now but their new “pulse” store concepts will be here in Jeddah in May. Pulse – represents a heartbeat in the community and with this brings a new direction to the brand. The new “pulse” stores are a vibrant place where beauty, creativity and activism combine.

The beauty behind the Body Shop is what they do, why they do it and what makes them so different. Their products help their customers look good, feel good and DO good.

Beauty !Q&AQ: I’ve heard oil is great to rejuvenate skin and hair. There are so many different oils on the market, I don’t know which one is the best. Suggestions?

DJ’s Beauty Editor Nilo shares her knowledge and expertise with our readers. Her goal is to impart confidence, share tips, revamp beauty routines, and let you in on Jeddah’s latest beauty news and great finds - enjoy!

REUSE! Beauty Tip !

Oils hold many benefits for the body, skin and hair. Olive oil & coconut oil generally are the most popular hair/skin oils, but a must try is jojoba oil as it is such a multi-purpose oil. It has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties and is very easily absorbed into the skin. Jojoba oil is the closest oil to which the body produces naturally. Apply it on your face, body and even in your hair - it is absorbed into the skin quickly and helps to moisturize skin, reduces breakouts, and even prevents hair loss!

Braun Satin Hair 7 straightener and brush Braun has discovered that straightening with temperatures over 200°C is irreversibly damaging the structure of the hair. True to our passion to care for the health of your hair, the Satin Hair 7 straightener operates with superior IONTEC which is a unique technology specifically designed to protect the hair plus and accurate temperature control up to 200°C.

You can see and feel the difference as your hair will become shiny, glossy and smooth.

Teapot LampTurn a collection of china castoffs into a whimsical, conversation-starting lamp.

Materials:An assortment of china teacups, saucers, teapots, and bowls - the more colorful and patterned, the better! Or stick with one set for a more uniform look.

Method:1. To create a balanced arrangement, choose components that form a pyramid -with large, heavy items on the bottom and lighter teacups up top.

2. Fill the top cup with self-hardening clay or plaster of Paris. While the clay is wet, press in a socket-and-cord unit and a lamp-shade holder and allow to harden for 24 hours.

3. Assemble the remaining elements together with a thin line of Super Glue , letting each piece dry for a minute before adhering the next. Sandwiching saucers between the teapot & cups gives added stability. Then screw on a suitable lampshade as the final touch!

The Teapot Lamp doesn’t require any drilling because the cord runs behind the lamp instead of through it. Keep the cord flush against the base with a few pieces of electrical tape, and then position the lamp against a wall.

Enjoy carbs again and still lose weight? Yes, Dr. Oz, the miracle guru of weight-loss and healthy living, helps you regain your energy AND your figure with some easy guidelines when it comes to carbs. Simple substitutions will satisfy your appetite while cutting calories.

The furry yellow Lorax fights the greedy Once-ler and his giant polluting factory from chopping all the colorful Truffula trees in this CGI movie based on Dr. Suess’s pro-environment classic book - voiced by Danny Devito, Ed Helms, Betty White and Taylor Swift.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax

LISTEN TOTrust - Sulk (Single Edit)Toronto’s Trust released their first single, “Sulk” to give us a peek at what to expect from their new album, “TRST”. “Sulk” is expansive and full with its hazy synths and thin, dancey beats—it’s moody, skulking pop that reminisces downcast ’80s dance at its best.

WATCH In Time Action, Sci-Fi & Thriller In the future, people have stopped aging at 25 and can only live one more year to try and live longer. Will Salas is a fugitive accused of murder who tries to fight this unjust system.

MUST -DOS OF THE MONTH!

READ The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern At the Le Cirque des Rêves, an extraordinary circus open only at night, a destined duel between two magicians, puts everyone in danger and despite themselves, they fall into a deep magical love - but only one can live.

DJ Staff Pick of the MonthDJ staff are out and about bringing the best of Jeddah to DJ readers. Here are some of their latest picks – maybe you’ll spot something you have been looking for!

WALAA AL-ATTASNespresso Machine

The Nespresso system is excellent for making an

outstanding cup of coffee. Better than any standard

coffee machine, it warms up fast, is easy to use,

mess-free and has a small ecological footprint. You can also use a large mug

for more than an espresso. This machine’s a must

if you love good and authentic coffee!

MAYDA HASHANIFootball Manager 2012

Football Manger is a dream come true for

football lovers like me. You play as the manager

of any club from over 50 nations across the

world. You control the tactics, substitutions, instructions and who

plays and who sits – it’s perfect! You realize

how good you are strategically and how

much you really know about football.

RAYAN KHYATRetronaut.co

The site is as close to a real time machine as I’ve

ever encountered! Its archive of photo albums

is massive! A circus in the 1900s, imperial

Russia in the 1910s, Egypt and England the 1920s, rebellious teens, high school dances and private parties from the

1940s and 50s. I’ve spent hours on Retronaut being

fascinated by the past.

YOUSEF KURASHIMatcha Green Tea

Matcha is finely ground quality green tea powder

celebrated for Japanese tea ceremonies. It boosts metabolism and reduces

stress with its anti-oxidants. Made into tea, baked goods and more.

It could be a bit bitter with too much powder or

to unaccustomed tastes. Drinking it makes me feel

revitalized and a bit Japanese!
