We solemnly swear that we are up to some good.

Jeddah has made strides in creating a community when individuals do their part in making a difference, companies are encouraged to be good neighbors and groups come together to create a positive impact.

Hence, for this issue of Destination, we decided to gather all these wonderful folks together to

show you just what social responsibility looks like and how it has made our city and the Kingdom a wonderful place to live in. We’ve also put together some lifestyle articles that will help you find the balance between being socially responsible and still having fun.

As Albus Dumbledore said, “It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.” The progress of our great city lies in the hands of the people who choose everyday to see its potential for greatness and take action.

Whether you’re into the arts, business, fashion, entertainment or spreading goodwill; what we do to contribute with our passions and skills will determine the future of our community.

So Jeddawis, make your actions count for something worthwhile. You are the unwritten pages of this magazine.

Enas Hashani Editor-in-Chief

intolerable act that cannot and should not be accepted.Statistically speaking, in the US, motorists account for 52 percent of all public litter with age, and not gender, being the main factor as individuals under 30 are more likely to litter in public than the older generation.

Generally I reserve judgment when witnessing uncouth behavior, preferring to extend the benefit of doubt and a positive affirmation towards a genuinely justifiable motive, but not in the case of public littering. There is absolutely no justifiable cause that can rationalize this. It is an

Now, there are many factors that contribute towards public littering, such as absence of adequate disposal facilities, pre-existing waste management issue, and open or improper transport mechanics. Thankfully none of which are an issue in the main areas of Jeddah, which lends to a conclusion that there is a chronic lack of a sense of personal responsibility among the motorists. Which is quite unfortunate, because a car generally comes

equipped with an ashtray, door pockets, seat pockets, cup holders, a trunk and many tips and tricks that one can use to consolidate their waste for proper disposal, such as:

• The simplest and easiest, a plastic bag

They can be hung off the gear lever or placed within the

door pocket; a plastic bag is a great way to compile one’s waste for

later disposal.

• Empty containers

Whether disposable coffee cups or water bottles, once the

beverage is consumed these containers can be used as waste receptacles with quite an ease,

especially since they also fit perfectly into the cup holders.

• Aftermarket car organizers

It is a well-known fact that litter begets litter. However, a desired

side effect of an organized car is an organized person who is far

less susceptible to public littering.

It is unavoidable that some of us spend a lot of time in

our cars, necessitating multi-functionality from

our vehicles to double up as picnic tables, study rooms and even workstations. However,

effective utilization of this space should not translate

into your garbage ending up in public places.

It really must come down to individual responsibility

and an embedded sense of accountability towards

preserving the beauty of the bride of the Red Sea, so that

all those whom are fortunate enough to have access to this privilege, can relish it without

the added garnish of your garbage.

“Removing harmful things from the road is an act of charity (sadaqah).” — Narrated by Abu Dharr Al Ghafari

Automating with AUTOJAKA fleet management service and tailored-maintenance program.By Aabiya Baqai

Officially launched on March 7 at the Big 5 Exhibition, AutoJak is a business-to-business mobile automotive maintenance service, and the first of its kind in the Kingdom “It is the first of its kind in terms of execution, quality and safety. Unlike AutoJak, many existing mobile workshops are very hazardous and inconvenient for the limited number of services they offer.”

AutoJak was the result of a business ideas brainstorming session the managing partners, Ismail Abudawood and Yusuf Albaity had one Saturday evening. “We came across many, which wouldn’t work for several reasons, so we

basically just gave up and continued eating. My partner started complaining about having to take his car for servicing, resulting in an ‘ahaa!’ moment. We started realizing that going to the service center all the time for simple things was a hassle when all of it could be done at home, work or wherever we want. That’s how AutoJak came to life.”

Though a brilliant idea, AutoJak wasn’t short of facing some pressing challenges. “It was quite difficult to find machinery that was made to fit in our vans; time after time we were faced with obstacles and dead ends while trying to

make room for the equipment available in the Saudi market. Nevertheless, we kept on pursuing our dream until we finally landed on the perfect forging supplier that not only had the complete equipment for our services but also the best solution for engineering our van of interest.”

AutoJak offers preventative maintenance services such as:• Oil change and oil filter change.• Tire change and tire rotation.• Wheel balancing. • Wheel alignment. • Battery inspection and battery change.

Soon they plan on offering computer diagnostic services in order to spot future malfunctions before they actually happen, as well as roadside assistance.

SIMPLE CAR HACKS

• Check your tires regularly and

never use an impact

wrench (drill) to fix your

tire bolts after a wheel change; always have

your mechanic use a torque wrench and do

them up manually as there is a specified torque

for these bolts, and an impact wrench exceeds the

torque specification.

• Don’t always run your oil on its

maximum mileage. For example, if it is oil specified for

10,000 kilometers, change it at 8,000 kilometers

due to the extreme heat and humidity in our

environment.

• Inspect your batteries regularly to avoid being

stranded on the road.

What is money personality?Your money personality is the set of characteristics and traits that govern your behavior toward money and finances.

Why is your money personality important?Understanding your money personality will help shape your approach to spending, saving and investing.

How can you learn about your money personality? The easiest way is to take a test that is widely available in various lengths and levels of detail online. The test will indicate the type of money personality type that you fall under in reasonable accuracy.

According to investopedia.com, there are five key money personality types:Big Spenders They are comfortable spending money, don’t fear debt and often take big risks when investing.Savers Conservative people who do not care about latest trends, are often debt-free, and do not take big risks in investing.

Shoppers This type finds great pleasure in spending money, even if they do not need the purchased items. They shop to entertain and maybe even never use what they buy.

FINANCIAL PLANNING W I T H R E E M A S A A D

Debtors They do not spend much time thinking about money, and generally spend more than they earn. They also often go into debt and don’t consider investing much.Investors They are cautiously aware of their money and try to put it to work. Their logic is: invest to cover your expenses and maybe make some extra money. Their actions are generally driven by careful decision-making. In general, people tend to fall under one of these personalities or simply are a hybrid of two. So, what word of advice do the experts have for each type? We’ll take a look at that next month.

We at Destination believe that taking care of our city and its people is our prime responsibility.

So we rounded up a number of ideas that Destination’s staff consider to be imperative in making our community a healthier, happier and sustainable place because, really, sustainability is the new cool.

1. CLEAN UP litter at parks and the Corniche with a group of friends.

2. RECYCLE WASTE by disposing them off to recycling bins or reusing the items to create new products for our homes.

3. ALWAYS TURN THE LIGHTS, AC AND TV OFF when not in use to conserve energy.

4. KEEP THE WORKPLACE CLEAN at all times by putting everything in place and throwing away trash.

10. SPREAD KINDNESS. As cheesy as this one sounds, it's the simplest and most important one.

These are just a few ideas that we spoke about at our office, there’s a lot more out there that we can do. It’s just about commitment.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E

5. PAINTING SPEED BUMPS a different color as indication for cars to avoid accidents.

6. HOLD A GARAGE SALE of excessive things we have been hoarding for a while, and donating the proceeds to charity.

7. GO TO A RANDOM DISTRICT and teach its people a certain skill like origami or painting; something they can cherish.

8. KEEP WATER, SNACKS AND CAT FOOD IN OUR CARS for those occasions when you meet a thirsty human or cat.

9. ORGANIZE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS for the less fortunate in order for them to acquire skills that can make them financially independent.

SUSTAINABILITYThe New Way of Life

Be the helping hand of

community by doing your part.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Jeddah’s Initiatives

“EYES FOR JEDDAH”Volunteers aiming to clean up

and beautify Jeddah.

“Le Ayoon Jeddah” or “For Jeddah’s Eyes” is both a Facebook and Instagram group under the administration of Hattan Hammouda. This group aims at shedding light on societal and community problems; it then sets up events and finds volunteers to help improve them. We spoke to him in order to discover more about their most recent initiative.

Hammouda explains that a recurring problem is the unkept state the beaches of Jeddah are due to people’s trash.

Page 33: DJ Issue 87

31DESTINATIONKSA.COM

We were very tired of seeing people enjoy the beauty of a place then

ruin it with their trash. It is indeed very disrespectful

to the entire city.

— Hattan Hammouda

He had undertaken two activities before with the help of several volunteer groups to clean up the shores and try to raise awareness. The latest endeavor that garnered support by many volunteer groups was entitled “My Environment, a Mirror Reflecting My Image.” On March 5, all the groups met at an assigned checkpoint and then rode to their destination at the Southern Corniche. The cleaning process was very extreme as it wasn’t only on the surface but managed to clean the water itself. Since a group of the volunteers were divers, they were able to get the necessary permits and swim underwater to keep the water crystal clear. A videography group was also present to record all the work being done. An added bonus to tidying up was the sense of solidarity everyone felt. The groups were all in tune and worked hard together to reach this collective and honorable goal.

“Le Ayoon Jeddah” will not stop there; it is going to raise the bar

by branching out to different places and undertaking various activities to make Jeddah even

prettier.

How We Can Get Involved

• Take own reusable bag to the supermarket or simply reduce the number of bags

per groceries.

• Avoid plastic and foam packaging.

• Avoid using straws.

• Send recyclables to Mawakeb Al Ajer for recycling.

ALNABTABetter Life and Better Environment

Objective To spread environmental awareness in society and implant eco-friendly values through workshops, school curriculums, kids’ clubs, events and eco-friendly products. Alnabta relies wholeheartedly on young volunteers and its activities are quite diverse, targeting different segments of society to make the maximum impact. HistoryAlnabta began in December 2005, when a group of women concerned about social issues in Jeddah met and decided that the environment was a topic that wasn’t given enough attention and was something that affected so many different things like health, cleanliness, the economy, waste management, consumerism, sustainability and future generations, and so Alnabta was born.

• Reuse materials before discarding to increase lifespan.

• Dispose waste properly.

• Save energy by turning off unnecessary lights.

Park Hyatt’s hospitality reaches the community.Based on the above pillars, Park Hyatt has been involved in a variety of community activities for the last couple of years such as:• Reduction of environmental impact through the cleaning of public areas around the hotel. • Celebration of Earth Hour. • Clothes and food donations to under-privileged individuals around town.

Hyatt Thrive

Being involved in such movements has motivated Park Hyatt and its staff to do more.

This year, with April being the month of Hyatt Thrive, Park Hyatt plans on continuing its efforts to help in the making of a socially responsible community by participating in the above campaigns again and adding other initiatives. These include: internal recycling policies that reduce waste sent to landfills and the conservation of natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.

In addition to that, Park Hyatt plans to integrate visits to houses of elderly people to spend some time with them, and learn from their experiences, all the while catering to their needs and happiness. The hotel also aims to take it a step further with donations this year by providing blankets, duvets and food to those in need, depending on their individual requirements.

The campaign that raised SR 76,248 for the CSR program.

Al Mathaaq Hospitality, a leading casual dining company in Jeddah, reinforced its support for education through its CSR campaign, which ran from June to October, collecting SR 76,248 to train and employ the Saudi youth in collaboration with Ektefaa NGO.

To celebrate the achievements of the campaign, Al Mathaaq hosted media personnel, where they witnessed the check handling ceremony and also took part in a round table discussing the success of the campaign with Al Mathaaq and Ektefaa representatives.

The program stemmed out from the company’s knowledge of the local Saudi community and its needs, and is in line with the recommendations of the Annual Saudi CSR 2014 summit. The program was designed around three main pillars which include educating, training and employing Saudi youth. The program mechanisms are targeted to building a brighter future for the local community.

DOUBLE THE HAPPINESS WITH LGA CSR Initiative for Newlyweds. Staying true to their motto “Life’s Good,” LG has launched an initiative called “Wedding Festival” that aims to help newly married couples with some of their expenses by providing free home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. to those who are not able to fully cover these costs.

Being the basic needs of a running household, these home appliances are a major chunk of the expenses a family needs to take on during weddings. LG intends to alleviate this burden.

“We thought about creating a gesture for the community, but we believed in executing it in an untraditional way with an idea that really helps people in our community in a very productive and direct approach,” points out Salman Al Sabban, the Corporate Marketing Manager of LG Saudi Arabia.

Relatives of the newlyweds or the bride and groom themselves can sign up on the LG microsite, filling in details such as location of the “Milkah” and other details for LG’s team to survey and decide. CO

Although there was initial hesitation from some brand managers, LG still managed to convince the entire company to support the cause, and it has been gaining success ever since. In just the first week of the launch, there were 250 responses, motivating LG to move further with this innovative concept in the Kingdom.

LG also hopes to bring other companies, which can add to the needs of every newlywed couple, on board through an entire package that includes furniture, a car, a house and

Every month, around two winners are picked to whom these appliances are delivered on the day of the event.

The reason for it to be supplied on the Milkah day is to avoid the family spending on these items before the main wedding event. Therefore, not only is it a valuable notion, but time-effective as well.

At the moment, this drive is running in Jeddah with hopes to expand to other cities like Riyadh and Dammam in the second half of the year. After evaluating the overall performance of this idea in those cities, Al Sabban hopes LG will be able to expand to other regional cities as well.

WAZEN A wellness program designed to raise awareness about obesity and endorse ways in fighting it successfully.

It includes a weight loss competition around the Kingdom, where individuals hoping to counter obesity, participate and involve themselves in exercise and healthy eating. The key is to “gradually change their lifestyle.”

During last year’s competition, Nahdi put weighing machines at their branches, and uploaded many videos and information on their social media pages to help the participants stay up-to-date and track their progress. Celebrities also got involved, promoting this great cause.

In the end, prizes were distributed to those who lost the most weight. A total of 3,748.7 kilograms were lost across 189,000 participants in the entire country.

As is apparent from these initiatives, Nahdi is a strong advocate and believer of practical and creative approaches, where the society can be fully involved and motivated.

“We aim to be the thought leader in health and wellbeing of society because we have a responsibility and we love the community,” adds Sarah Turkistani, Senior Manager of the Health and Community Service Program at Nahdi.

Art and Desert DesignsDesert Designs is my family company, which was started by my parents in 1990 during the Gulf War. I grew up surrounded by beautiful things and learnt about the business from a very young age. My parents always had a passion for local art and artifacts.

An MIS graduate with experience in various companies, Bukhari opened and ran a cafe in her parent's store, before realizing that her true passion is art and organizing art events. It took a while, but that eureka moment when you figure out what you're good at changes everything.

That Curating LifeI am still learning how to properly curate and work with the artist from A to Z. Every year with each show I learn more. I did do a few courses in the summer at Sotheby's but nothing is like learning on the job. Life is good. Hectic and a lot of doing things last minute because of gallery availability or broken artwork to fix, so staying calm is also the key. To be a curator you must be very aware of your market but at the same time not affect the artist's vision or style too much.

and my parents love music and they took me to museums, art shows, and musical events from a very young age. My grandfather was a professional photographer (and certified computer nerd, hence the MIS).

Our store, Desert Designs, dedicated a large area to art and art events in 2007 but always had art and artifacts in it. The impact wasn't sudden but gradual over two decades. Art ShowsI started helping my family by pouring coffee and tea at art show openings and moved slowly into organizing, curating, selection and then doing my own events. My first art show was LoudArt in 2012. My partner Najla AlSuhaimi and I started it and are still doing it together every year.

It is really a very opinionated process so we try and get a few more people than just Najla and myself to take a look so that we are sure of our selection. We assess based on concept first then style and skill.

Loud Art Loud Art is my first and only art movement that I have worked on. It is now a traveling art show where we move around the country during the year. I also am a founder of an art community called Huna Art, with a partner Najla Abdullah and an awesome team. This takes place in Khobar, where we do an art gathering every other Saturday. We select a topic and invite a professional in its field to hold discussions. It is open to all and hosted in Desert Designs.

Art and CommunityI do believe when Loud Art first started there was a lack of art events and a lack of differentiation in mediums, specifically in the Sharqiya art scene. We might have not directly affected it but we did give the artists that were trying to do something different a platform to preform and create. Huna Art has directly created a creative community where people discuss and learn things every time.

What would be one of your most memorable performances? It has to be our first ever performance as Continera, which was at the Beat Jam VII.

Do you have any plans on eventually producing and recording your own music? Not yet, but eventually maybe. What do you think of Jeddah’s music scene?Jeddah’s music scene is very unique with what it has to offer. There are talented musicians in Jeddah and most importantly, the audience really appreciates good music, but there aren’t enough platforms or opportunities given to the local talents to flourish as they should.

What piece of advice would you give to other upcoming bands hoping to make it big?Make sure your band has the chemistry as friends before the chemistry as musicians. You have to be open and eager to learn, stay down-to-earth, never forget what the audience wants and most importantly, have fun.

soundcloud.com/jeddahmusicians/sets/continera

How did Continera come about?Continera was formed by Bob and CJ over a phone call, with the main idea being to keep our musical talents alive. Initially it was a hobby, but once the multi-talented Deniz and Daniel came into the equation, things started to take off at a much faster pace.

What was the inspiration behind the name?At the beginning, we didn’t think we would need a name. However, when we finally needed one, Deniz suggested we use Continera, which is a Latin combination of Continente (Continent) and Continuera (Continuation); we thought the name suited us well.

How do you decide on what songs to cover? As we come from different backgrounds, we were able to draw on that and we agreed that the most important aspects are the audience age group, nationality, type of music they may like, etc. We also try to cover a wide variety of songs from rock to reggae and dance to funk to ensure a wider audience. It is all about entertaining them and when you see the reactions, it is worth it.

En Pointe with JUMANA KHALID

extraordinaire by night. By Aabiya Baqai

How It All BeganLiving in the US for seven years handed Jumana Khalid the opportunity to begin a career in performing arts. At a very young age, she began with figure ice-skating, enjoying the concept of “movement in music.” She then tried gymnastics, gaining the strength needed for ballet.

When she moved back to Saudi, Khalid went on to ballet classes in KAUST, igniting her passion for dance. Next, she joined the Jeddah Ballet Academy (Motion Boutique), learning the skills needed to become a junior instructor and advanced dancer.

Teaching and LearningIn addition to practicing techniques throughout the week, Khalid teaches children aged 3-12, twice a week. “I enjoy being a junior teacher and assisting in the 3-5 year old classes, but being able to dance in the advanced classes to further my technique is what I really want to do.”

Dancing in HijabKhalid has done all her performances and practices in a hijab. “It was hard at first, but after my first performance, it was okay. I was trying to capture that you can dance in many ways and religion doesn’t constrain you.”

Practice RoutineKhalid typically rehearses for three hours a day, starting with stretches and combination movements in the morning, and then doing a similar nightly routine after school. She also tries to stay fit for the job. “One of the most important aspects of being a dancer is eating right and maintaining good sleeping habits, while not limiting yourself to one type of dance.”

Memorable MomentSpecifying a particular performance as her most memorable was difficult for Khalid. “If I’d have to say one that stood out the most, it would be the dance showcase at the British School, where I danced en pointe. It’s the most memorable because of the large crowd and professionalism. I was the only participant doing a solo ballet production, so it was pretty exciting.”

Awareness in the RegionWhen the ballet extraordinaire was asked on how to tackle the lack of understanding of ballet in the region, she responded, “At the moment, there are new ballets schools opening up all the time and parents are realizing the benefits of proper ballet education along with academics. Ballet provides not only physical elegance and grace, but also a well-rounded mentality. It’s an important activity.”

Supporting Others “I decided to support those who are going down the same path. People started calling me to ask about cancer-coping mechanisms. I truly believe that support and solidarity helps women get over cancer and gives them the strength to move forward. We don’t have awareness programs for families to be educated on how to deal with cancer patients. This is why I dedicated my MA to the importance of establishing a unit for the psychological support of those with breast cancer.”

Here are the most important lessons she has learnt from her battle and hopes that she can help, support and guide others while they endure similar trials and tests. Relying on Yourself “This is the time to focus on yourself. A lot of women I talked to during their illness were more worried about what those around them will think or do, but this is not the time to do that. You have to have to maintain a positively healthy psyche for better progress.” Positive Outlook “When I first learnt I had cancer, I was very weak and sad, but I also felt really close to Allah, this made me feel better and consequently more appreciative of everything else that is going right with me. Another important insight I gained was filtering all the negative people around me. So remember to only surround yourself with those who make you happy and don’t engulf you in a web of depression and pity.” “I also learnt that I had to keep myself busy; that gave me purpose and took my mind away from the pain. It seemed like I blamed my illness for not being able to do as I wished, but I realized I had to stop feeling sorry for myself. I finally understood the importance of never putting anything off.”

What can you do to be part of the change?

Since 1950, the UN has marked April 7 of every year to be World Health Day. It’s a day to commemorate and celebrate the founding of the WHO and bring to attention major health related issues on a global scale.

This year’s concept is to combat diabetes, a life-long disease that affects the way your body handles glucose in your blood with alarming repercussions. There are two main forms of diabetes: type one and type two, both somewhat genetically linked but type two comprises 90 percent of people with diabetes worldwide.

Many believed that type one is mostly common in children

and adolescents but with all the lifestyle changes the world is

going through, more and more children and young adults are

being diagnosed with type two than ever before. This is a major

concern for health care providers and according to the IDF in the

MENA region, it’s been recorded that there were 3.4 million cases

of diabetes in Saudi Arabia as of 2015.

Tips to Remember Here’s what you could do in support of World Health Day

• Include your children in some type of physical activity.

• Get your blood pressure checked.

• Reduce salt and sugar consumption.

• Play sports or exercise.

• Go for a jog or a long walk.

It’s no secret as Saudis, we love our local rich diets, and with the influx of restaurants everywhere, more and more Saudis are looking to fast food chains and local restaurants at least once a day for their meals. Physical activity is pretty much not integrated into the average Saudi lifestyle resulting in an increase in obesity, higher risk of having a heart attack, hypertension, definite increase in the possibility of getting diabetes and other major

health risks that are very easily preventable.

This year’s concept aims to break this bad habit. As a community, everyone should play a part in increasing and promoting healthy habits such as taking walks, letting children roam around and play, include more fruits and vegetables as well as provide healthier options in your meals, putting down that cigarette and quit all together, cut down on the

fast food and sugar products and simply try to enjoy life. The burden of diabetes is increasing globally, specifically in developing countries such as Saudi Arabia.

Small and simple changes can be very effective and beneficial for you and your family in the long run.

Don’t Stress Out

An herbal tea a day keeps this silent killer away.By Dr. Rehan Al Taji

"Stress is not a state of mind... it's measurable and dangerous, and humans can't seem to find their off-switch." These words of warning come from renowned author and award-winning neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky in the documentary “Stress: Portrait of a Killer.”

For many of us, our imbalanced lifestyle, inadequate rest, unhealthy eating habits and zero proper physical activity has placed us in the sights of many silent killers that are ready to trigger at any moment. It is imperative that we identify problems very early on and take measures to prevent them from getting worse. It is all the more important to be proactive and not let these issues occur at all.

Let’s talk about one of the most dangerous of these silent killers:

STRESS

Being able to recognize common stress symptoms can give you a jump on managing them. You may think illness is to be blamed for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or even decreased productivity at work, when really stress could be behind it all. Stress can cause many negative behaviors, including a change in eating habits, anger outbursts, smoking and social withdrawal. Left unchecked, stress contributes to many health problems, from high blood pressure and heart disease to obesity and diabetes.

In order to combat stress, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body. While they don’t take the place of strong social support, herbs are a wonderful, natural way to help the body and mind to cope with stress. Whether your stress shows up as muscle tension, scattered thoughts, upset digestion or a racing heartbeat, there are traditional herbal remedies to soothe these reactions. Some of the following herbal teas taken after dinner can manage your stress and bring dramatic change in your life.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

This humble, apple-scented flower is traditionally taken

as a tea after dinner because it’s a nervine that supports digestion. Chamomile has

been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory—reducing “inflamed” thoughts as well as

inflammation in the body.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

This is called “the gladdening herb” for its ability to uplift and calm at the same time,

both as a tea and through its lovely scent. Traditionally, it’s

been used to decrease anxiety and ease sadness.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

This makes the sun shine a little brighter as an effective tool

for lifting depression. It’s been found useful in mild to moderate depression and traditionally was

used to relieve anxiety and lift sadness.

SPIRITUALITY

Streaming through the clouds overhead, beams of silver light splash like a silver ocean, accentuating the moon overhead, not only spellbinds its viewers, but also marks the advent of the sanctimonious month of Rajab.

The month of Rajab is one of the sacred months of which

Allah says:“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” [At Tawbah 9:36]

THE HOLY MONTH OF RAJABUnderstanding it and knowing why it’s special.

By Bint Ayesha

The Sacred Months

Rajab, Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram. In

these months, sins are more forbidden and bear greater

consequences. Also, the sanctity of these months is such, that we are rewarded more than other times for

fulfilling good deeds.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G

Page 93: DJ Issue 87

91DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Innovations committed by those who exaggerate the holiness of this month are as follows: Celebrating Prophet’s Night Journey on the 27th (Isra’ and Mi’raaj). Performing Salaat Al Raghaaib. Observing Voluntary Fast specifically in this month. Visiting Graves. Singling this month for frequently performing Umrah.

The aforementioned acts are innovations; as they haven’t been properly authenticated. Without a doubt fasting and Umrah are good deeds, but bid‘ah begins when we single out a specific date, time or month for a deed, as in this case Rajab is singled out for carrying out specific deeds. If a person performs Umrah during Rajab without believing that there is any special virtue in that, then there is nothing

theislamicteam

wrong with that. Similarly, one who offers voluntary fasts, simply out of his usual habit without singling this month or time of year is permissible.

Hence, we should take measure to gain proper knowledge and protect ourselves from falling into bid‘ah for verily Ayesha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that is not a part of it, will have it rejected.” (Related by both Imam Al Bukhari & Imam Muslim)

So, dear friends, let’s prepare ourselves for this month, let’s purify our intentions, abstain from transgression, desist from committing bid’ah, spread the message and enrich our and others’ knowledge with regards to this month.

WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR RIZQ

SPIRITUALITY

1. Continuous Istighfaar

Allah says, “Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving, He will send rain to you in abundance, increase you in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.” (71:10-12)

Rizq: Provision is the blessings of this world and of the Hereafter.

One should work, and take up the means to attain his rizq. As always, there are tips from the Qur’an and Sunnah to aid us in this endeavour.

2. Having Taqwa

Allah says, “Whosoever fears Allah, keeps his duty to Him, He will make for him to get out from every difficulty and will provide for him from (sources) he could never imagine.” (65:2-3)

Allah will open doors, which you never knew even existed.

6. Du‘aa’ (Supplication)

The Prophet (PBUH) used to say, when he said the salaam at the end of Fajr prayer: “Allaahumma inni as’ aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘ilman naafi’an, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan (O Allah, I ask you for good provision, beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds).” (Saheeh Ibn Maajah)

5. Giving Charity

Allah says, “Whatsoever you spend of anything for Allah, he will replace it. He is the best of those who grant sustenance.” (34:39) Spend charity for Allah and be blessed in what remains and your rewards in the Hereafter will be multiplied.

3. Raise in the Ranks

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “If you were to rely on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out early in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.” (Tirmithi)

Let’s get started following these tips and

watch as the provision rains from Allah above.

Allah is Al Razzaq, The Provider, who gives to

whom He wills. Our blessings are a test and as such, we must appreciate and thank Allah whether

we have little or a lot. I ask Allah to bless you, and to open your doors for you.

4. Ties of Kinship

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “He who desires that he be granted more rizq and his life be prolonged should maintain good ties with his kinship.” (Bukhari and

An insight into Makkah through the ages.

Located on the road that leads to the Ayesha Mosque in Makkah, this former palace has been converted into a museum that goes by the name of Makkah Museum for Antiquities and Heritage.

We stood there in front of the stark white structure that didn’t appear ostentatious wondering if it was open for visitors. We couldn’t see anyone going on inside, although it was located on a busy road. The only thing that made the structure look imposing was its massive size and the palm trees that lined its courtyard. But this was nothing compared to the opulence of its interiors.

Formerly known as the Zaher Palace, the construction on the building began in 1946 on the orders of King Abdulaziz; it finished seven years later in 1952. The palace was initially used as royal guesthouse but later on it was converted into a school. After its tenure as a school it was restored and converted into a museum.

The lone security guard showed us the way up the driveway towards the burgundy colored main door. We opened it and were flabbergasted by

the interior; regal in every sense of the word. The light was shimmering down the glass panels lighting up the main corridor gracefully.

The museum is divided into a number of rooms or halls where the flow of visitors is designed in such a way that a visitor starts the tour by witnessing the oldest artifacts found in the Makkah region first and literally goes era after era to the most recent past right at the end.

The first hall we entered displayed a general history of various regions across the Kingdom and highlighted some of the major archaeological finds from each. The hall adjacent to that had stone tools and arrowheads made from chiseled rock by the earliest inhabitants of the region. There were various pottery items on display in the same hall as well.

While moving around the hall what I found most beneficial was the fact that it had bilingual informative posters and signage. Museums in the country desperately need such signage and posters to educate visitors on what they are seeing and the history behind it.

Walking down wide palatial corridors, I was overwhelmed by the grandeur of the building. The polished marble floors, high ceiling, decorated glass panels and a royal staircase at the end of the hall; the palace is a masterpiece from the inside.

As we climbed the grandiose stairs with a few moments of being overwhelmed to take in all the regality that surrounded us, we saw old copies of the Qur’an in front of us. Here as well there wasn’t a single person.

Page 104: DJ Issue 87

DESTINATION JEDDAH APRIL 2016102

We traversed room after room and found the artifacts on the upper floor to be from a fairly recent past of Makkah.

Noticeable halls include the currency hall that displays several currencies dating back to the successive Islamic periods and the Saudi state hall that tells the story of the formation of the Kingdom.

Also not to miss out on is the hall of the development of the grand mosque. Here visitors are educated on the different phases of development that have been undertaken at the grand mosque in Makkah under successive rulers.

But what was slightly sad to see was that apart from us there were only two other visitors, despite it being one of the best museums in the region. Overall, the museum is impressive but what I personally felt awestruck with was the structure in which

the museum was housed. The place was well maintained and should definitely be seen.

It will take you around an hour to tour this museum. It will help you understand Makkah and its rich history better.

The oil well that changed the Kingdom’s fortunes.By Mohammed Mirza

The Prosperity Well

It is this well that was later renamed as the ‘Prosperity Well’ in 1999 for bringing in a renewed hope in the country’s oil prospects.

By the early and mid-1930’s SOCAL (Standard Oil Company of California) had pumped millions of dollars in exploration and drilling in the hunt for oil in the Kingdom, but all their efforts had been to no avail so far. There was hope in the Dammam Wells 2,3,4,5 and 6, but after two years of drilling even their prospects turned poor.

However, the executives at SOCAL decided to take the leap of faith and continue with the deep test well, Dammam Well No. 7. After drilling to SO

a depth of 1,382 meters even it fell short of expectations leaving the executives at SOCAL in a dilemma.

SOCAL’s chief geologist Max Steineke persisted in convincing the execs at SOCAL that large quantities of extractable oil lay beneath the deserts of Saudi Arabia.

On March 4, 1838, the drilling reached a depth of 1,440 meters at Dammam Well No. 7. It started to pump out 1,585 barrels of oil a day. The other wells were also deepened soon after and together they began to produce oil on a large scale. Then in October 1938, Saudi Arabia officially declared the discovery of oil in commercial quantities.

It was due to the unearthing the large quantities of oil at Dammam Well No.7, that there was a renewed faith in the prospects of the vast oil deposits in the Kingdom. In 1982, after continuing to produce oil for close to 45 years, Dammam Well No.7 was taken out of production. It produced around 32 million barrels of oil in its long production history.
