DJ’s 2010 Collector’s Edition

The year-end is a time for reflec-tion, for looking back at the year’s highs and lows, for a moment of

introspection. As I remember all the remarkable events of 2010, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride for the residents of this city, my Jeddah.

When the DJ team set out to shine the spotlight on some of Jeddah’s wonderful ‘civil society’ organiza-tions…we were astounded to realize that there were actually too many to squeeze into just one issue! From supporting breast cancer awareness to cleaning up the Red Sea coast to volunteering with orphans, Jeddahwis were busy all year-round. So please forgive us if we didn’t include your favorite group this time – we look forward to recognizing more everyday heroes in our upcoming issues.

I hope you’ll enjoy reminiscing with me as you read through our expanded In the Spotlight, Red Sea Coast, and Fashion sections. Collecting the ‘best of the best’ wasn’t easy, but Jeddah’s offerings continue to expand and grow every year – 2010 was no exception. The restaurant round-up elicited many good-natured discussions as we debated which of our favorite places to recognize.

The Jeddah Choice Awards is an exciting competition which I hope you’ll participate in as we partner with ‘What’s Up Jeddah’ to reward Jeddah’s premier ser-vices and destinations. Please visit www.jeddahchoice.com to make your voice heard.

Wishing all of our readers happiness, health, and peace for 2011, inshallah. May we unite together to build a strong, compassionate, vibrant city in the coming year.

Dear Melisa,Teatro Mall is quite reasonable - corner of Sultan St. & Tahlia St. - across from Virgin Records. You can also refer to our Arts Directory for a list of galleries you can lease for an exhibition. Spreading the word about your exhibition is what matters most, to attract interest and build a name for yourself. Good luck!

Dear FerdousYou can arrange your trip with Discover Saudi, a tourisim group dedicated to special tourism programs, both on land and water, and includes a number of activities and various sports and adventure games.Office: 00966500894006You can also check their Facbook group : Discover Saudi اكتشف السعودية Two other options would be:1- Mr.Khalid Khafaji (tel: 0505664137 website: arabiancamp.com)2- Mr. fahad (tel:0507678139)

Just read your online magazine for the first time. It is great and I wish I knew about it when I was working in Jeddah a year or so ago. It has all of the stuff one needs. The quality of the articles also are high and I enjoyed the high quality photographs, especially those of Hans Sjoeholm. Keep it up!Chris Pienaar

This month we have to applaud the Kingdom’s efforts to make the roads safer for us all. They are using a high-tech system called SAHER which will improve traffic safety through the use of photo-radar, fixed speed cameras, & roving camera cars. Violators will receive the bad news that they are being ticketed via their mobile phones. According to the Okaz newspaper, the accident rate has gone down 52% , which makes those pesky tickets a small price to pay for our safety. So let’s all watch our speed - the cameras are watching you. Let’s enjoy the safer Saudi roads together.

It is now a generally accepted fact that if you get into a car in Jeddah, you will probably be gridlocked for at least part of that time. There are several railway expansions taking place that will connect the cities of the Kingdom but a noticeable lack of public transportation within Jeddah. As a result, many Jeddahwis are left...stuck in traffic? In 2009, the Ministry of Transportation started a feasibility study for an intercity-train network in Jeddah, one that is desperately needed. Everyone is affected and annoyed by the increasing commutes and with the lack of a hygienic and viable bus or train option for Jeddah residents (male/female, young/old). A big thumbs down to no public transport in Jeddah and here’s hoping that this project will take precedence in the future.

Thumbs up to... SAHER

POLL OF THE MONTHNext Month’s Question:Q: How far would you go to lose weight?

Time to Get Involved! There are numerous avenues for pro-active, positive-minded individuals to get involved in charities and volunteer organizations in Jeddah. The sense of unity is contagious once you meet all the amazing individuals who have dedicated their time and resources to a variety of causes. From volunteering

at orphanages to cleaning up the Corniche to raising awareness about

prevention, DJ has been floored to see just exactly how much Jeddah cares. Instead of complaining about the problems around you...become one of the change-makers by getting involved. Check out the organizations listed in this month’s issue - In the Spotlight and Green Living highlight many of Jeddah’s civil societies tackling important issues of the day. Now that you’ve been given a forum for change, it’s easy to become part of the solution - get inspired!

Just Basic Black & White? A Guide To Saudi AttireLadies, have you ever wanted to buy an abaya, but been bewildered by the styles and different components? Gentleman, have you ever wondered about the ubiquitous thobe and what you’re supposed to wear underneath it? DJ boldly goes to the heart of these common concerns – look no further for all your questions are answered right here.

The ABC’s of AbayasThe abaya is a loose, wide-sleeved garment that is usually black, but not necessarily. It has become an extension of the wearer’s personality, often embellished and brightly colored and spawning a whole industry of its own! The abaya can be worn elegantly on the shoulders as an overcoat or over the head.

Tarha (Scarf)The tarha comes in many different variations of color, length, and decoration and is used to cover the hair and in some cases, the face. While many Saudi women simply wrap it around their head to cover their hair, the niqab is a face veil that is worn over the tarha and has a rectangular eye slit. The burqu, similar to the niqab, has a vertical strip of fabric between the eyes which connects the top and the bottom sections together.

The BumpThe bump definitely deserves its own section! This style consists of putting your hair into a high bun (or using a hair piece to enhance your tresses) and wrapping the tarha lightly so that it’s raised by the bun, affording a taller silhouette to your outfit.

CautionBe careful when walking behind shopping carts, getting on and off elevators/escalators and into cars that your abaya doesn’t get caught in any doors or wheels. May be hazardous to health and/or prestige (any woman who has suffered these embarrassing situations knows exactly what we mean!)

Just Basic Black & White? A Guide To Saudi Attire

CautionSome definite thobe mistakes to be avoided include wearing a thobe which is too tight or stained. Also beware of leaky pens in your pockets - nothing ruins your style like ink-stains. We are also wary of ordering spaghetti when we’re out to make a good impression...needs no explanation!

ThobeThe thobe is a long-sleeved, ankle-length loose flowing garment. Although it’s usually white and made of cotton, thobes can be made for winter in thicker, darker fabrics. The thobe is the apparel of choice for almost all Saudi businessmen, and with the introduction of trendy alternatives over the last few years, has also become a fashion statement for the younger generation.

KuffiyaThe kuffiya is a white knitted cap that is worn under the ghutra.

AgalThe agal is a thick, black, braided cord that is worn on top of the ghutra/shmagh to hold it in place. The agal differs from region to region within the Kingdom and other Gulf countries.

Ghutra/ShmaghThe main part of a man’s headdress, this is a square piece of cloth that is either checkered red and white (shmagh) or plain white (ghutra). Many Saudis, particularly the younger generation, take great pride in arranging their headgear in very specific configuration with names likes ‘Cobra’ and ‘Royal’. Observing a skilled Saudi deftly flick his headdress into place is truly poetry in motion!

Sirwal SunnaLong underwear worn under the thobe.

KabakThe cufflinks make the man! Although not required, cufflinks are an elegant and expressive addition to the traditional thobe attire.

MadasMadas are the sandals worn by males. Usually made from leather and ornately patterned, European styles are also becoming increasingly popular.

Those words were written by DJ’s Editor-In-Chief, in sorrow, yet also as a tribute to the overwhelming response from Jeddahwis of all ages who came together to transform tragedy into triumph during those painful days after the floods. Join DJ in our remembrance of the 1st anniversary of the Jeddah floods, but also celebrate with us the numerous volunteer groups that exist all over the city – some have been in the public eye, but many others work selflessly in anonymity. It’s when ordinary people perform extraordinary deeds that true kindness and compassion can flourish. Pure hearts full of inspiration to alleviate poverty, to clean up the environment, to heal the sick...this is the heart of Jeddah. Perhaps these tales of local heroes will inspire you too to take action. Let Jeddah’s motto be ‘inspiration, motivation, participation’ – enjoy!

When I arrived in Jeddah in August 2009, I could not have imagined that such an amazing experience was coming my way. Although I wasn’t familiar with Saudi women, I knew in my heart that these women were unique. I began chatting with them and immediately became more curious about learning about their culture firsthand. In September, I joined the Breast Cancer Campaign. Princess Reema undertook this initiative to spread awareness of breast cancer and also to create the world’s largest “human pink ribbon” here in Jeddah to break the existing Guinness World Record. Her goal to eradicate breast cancer suffering by spreading the word of early detection became our inspiration. In the course of our campaign, we soon aimed not just to enlighten the citizens of Saudi Arabia, but send a message to the entire world.

I visited numerous colleges, schools, businesses and compounds in order to promote this event. I met some amazing females, students, teachers, principals and directors, all of whom were so supportive of this campaign. These are the real-life women of Saudi Arabia - women who have chosen to work hard on improving their lives as well as the lives of others through education, cultural activities and community service.

On Thursday, October 28th 2010, I arrived at the stadium. After an hour at my VIP section post, I spotted a very elegant figure exiting a charter bus. She was very friendly and with great poise introduced herself to me. “Hello, I am Haifa”, she said. My jaw dropped open…

I was speechless! The words finally tumbled out of my mouth, “Princess Haifa, Your Highness, welcome.” Within seconds she put my awkwardness at ease. One by one the guests exited the bus and soon after Princess Reema arrived, also with a gentle smile, followed by Princess Noura and the rest of the VIP guests.

Nearly 6,000 participants gathered that evening – the old and the young alike. A Guinness official recorded the females who stood on the green grass football field in the form of a pink ribbon. 3,952 females of Saudi Arabia stood strong and proudly broke the record and put their mark on history!

As I downloaded the event pictures from my camera, I realized a whole month of stress, sleepless nights and hard work were well worth it - it was an overwhelming team effort. Truly, it was very humbling when both Princess Reema and Princess Haifa personally thanked me and let me hold the Guiness World Record Certificate. They were just as excited as I was when the females of Saudi Arabia made world history. We did it!

That night the women of Saudi Arabia proved my motto, “Empower women… Improve the World!”

One of the group’s recent causes is ‘Rawasheen’, an initiative that works to renovate historically significant buildings in old Jeddah, beginning with the 200-year old Rabat Al-Khunji Al-Kabeer. Said Khalid Dahlawi, the initiator of the Rawasheen project, “My dream is to preserve and restore Old Jeddah. We do care about details authenticity. We want to feel that we are [at a] home away from home when we come and visit. Let’s not forget the handicapped; easy access to alleys and buildings must be a requirement where possible.

Change Your Life and Rawasheen is putting a call out for a special kind of volunteer, “We need people with clean souls. We need seekers not advertisers to rescue our old Jeddah and make our community a better place. They are difficult to find these days yet they do exist. Those who are looking for propaganda, fame and glory can stay away. For our work to be blessed we need to work in silence and focus our positive energy at the work in hand.” For the volunteer who strives to make a change without the glory, Change Your Life is the organization for you.Contact: Facebook Group “Change your Life”

YIG accepts any willing volunteers to participate in worthy events and causes in Jeddah. DJ sat down with Maha Taher, co-founder and CEO, to discuss the initiative and its goals.

Taher recalled the humble origins of the initiative, “YIG began when I first moved to Jeddah and wanted to create a club to keep myself busy. A good friend of mine, Mohammad Al-Bakhri (Co-Founder), suggested a social welfare club and things took off from there. I organized our first outing which was distributing air-conditioners to under priveleged families who needed it during the unbearable summer heat. That was the first time a lot of the volunteers met and since then, we’ve become inseparable. The secret that unites us is active spirits, generous souls and an eagerness to help others.”

After being dubbed “Young Initiative Group” by fellow co-founder, Dania Al-Masri, the YIG went on to a range of diverse welfare projects. The Iftar Sayem project consisted of distributing 2,500 meals per day to the poor during Ramadan. YIG is also involved in helping underprivileged patients obtain medical care and establishing educational campaigns for orphanages or less fortunate schools. Their “Innovators” committee focuses on renovating housing

Individuals For Positive Change

Young Initiative Group, or YIG, was founded in 2010 and built on a simple premise: to make a positive change in the community. The YIG is based on the principle that within every individual lies the potential to affect change within our community.

DESTINATION JEDDAH30

“I found myself when I met the YIGis. They brought life into my life.” - Maha Taher

in poverty-stricken areas. The initiative has also developed campaigns aimed at cleaning the streets of Jeddah and distributing home appliances (i.e. stoves, freezers, etc.) to needy families.

Taher spoke about the personal attachments many of the volunteers form with the cases. “We actually get personally involved. For example, if it’s a medical case, we pay for the medical bill, we sleep in the hospital with the patient to make sure they are well taken care of, we clean their houses..we cry when the patient is in pain and smile [to see them] smile.”

YIG has experienced a huge increase in members as more and more individuals decide to do their part. Taher praised this growing sense of community among volunteers: “People are very receptive...everyone has a good heart and people want to help others. YIG is just another group that aims to do good.”

When asked what advice she would give to people starting similar organizations, Taher very passionately replied that the key is to get started as soon as possible. “Don’t procrastinate on doing good and Allah will facilitate the process for you!”

The YIG has plans to perfect their current projects before taking on new causes and for now is proud of the accomplishments undertaken. Taher shared the initiatives biggest achievement with DJ: “Our achievement was the transformation from strangers and invdividuals to a loving, caring, and helpful family. [The] YIG family does not only include volunteers, but also the people that we help. We are all one big family who would do anything for each other.”

Wadi Khadra Issue 12 (Jan): Wadi Khadrah, or the Green Valley, is a valley of lush springs and palm tree groves that belies its arid desert surroundings. Deserted other than the ruins of old buildings, said to be a historic market for dates and a mosque, the beauty of the valley is enough to entice any adventurer for a return visit to do some camping or hiking.

Hadda Issue 13 (Feb):Once a bustling stopping point for passing caravans on their way to and from Makkah and Jeddah, this unpretentious town was home to many historical events and even contains monuments and artifacts dating back to Turkish origins.

Easily accessible, but well worth the visit, Sadiyah Valley offers an abundance of wildlife, vegetation, and mystery to the curious soul. Be sure to visit the ruins of a watchtower that houses rock carvings from an ancient civilization.

Self-Portraits: Mirrors on the Wall

Why does an artist represent oneself? When do self-portraits act as masks asserting a surface and only alluding to hidden truths? What is revealed? How does the artist transcend the limits of self-representation?

Self-portraits are not only confined to the artist but evoke their connections with others, and are thus imprinted with others’ experiences and existence, along with one’s own.All portraits are portraits of the self, portraits of a viewer. At a time when differences are sources of conflict, acknowledging similarities should foster tolerance and acceptance.

The exhibition at leading contemporary gallery, ATHR, featured the work of Sabhan Adam, Anwar Al-Rahbi, Ara Azad, Oussama Baalbaki, Hanan Bahamdan, Ayman Yossri Daydban, Raouf Rifai, Nadie Safieddine, Saddek Wasil, Chawki Youssef, the exhibition focused on self-portraits and what they represented. A surprisingly contemporary exhibition, ATHR’s -Self Portraits: Mirrors on the Wall- was a journey into each artist’s experiences and expression.

Opening night was on 2 Nov, and the exhibition went on till the 2 Dec.

An unusual collaboration between a businessman and a musician back in 2006 has resulted in the recent release of a beautiful song & music video filmed entirely in Jeddah. Dr. Walid Fitahi, CEO of the International Medical Center (IMC) Jeddah, and renowned musician Sami Yusuf envisioned a song which would encapsulate the spirit of ‘Heal and You Will Be Healed’. Together they wrote a song called ‘Healing’ which has gathered over half a million viewers on YouTube in only one month!

Their desire to raise social awareness dovetailed with their different career paths – one as a medical executive and one as a musician. IMC is committed to uphold a vision of serving all of humanity. Its counterpart, ETM International, is a British record label company that aims to become the leading international producer of socially conscious music. Sami Yusuf was selected as the musician to bring the song to life…and he does so with uplifting lyrics accompanying touching scenes of Jeddahwis at work and play. By reaching out to help others in need…you in turn will be helped by others – a simple message which is artistically depicted in this music video. A smile, a helping hand, a kind word; these basic acts of charity can prove as powerfully healing as the skilled expertise of an emergency technician or a talented surgeon. Heal and you will be healed…truly a motto for humanity.

Coral: Foundation of Life and the Seas - Issue 13Corals themselves form the basis of life in the seas and oceans - without them, the underwater aquatic show we enjoy would have no performers. Do your part to encourage our coral reef to remain vibrant and healthy while still marveling at this wonder of nature.

Jeddah’s Original Outdoor Activity: Fishing - Issue 14A photographic journey of fishing in Jeddah, Michael Bou-Nacklie takes readers on an exploration of one of the most biodiverse marine habitats in the region, the Red Sea. Pane Caldo successfully celebrated their first anniversary. This new Italian restaurant provides a fresh… well, everything. With fresh décor, fresh and friendly service, and fresh ingredients on display, this place take fresh to a new level. Pane Caldo does not use anything canned, frozen, or boxed. Even the fish is fresh and the pasta is homemade.

First to come was their complimentary dish: rosemary, olive and tomato focaccia bread elegantly stacked on top of each other, served with olive paste and spiced olive oil. Then we ordered the mixed antipasti, the Buffalina pizza, which is a regular pizza topped with sundried tomatoes, fresh basil, and parmesan flakes, and the margarita pizza, a four-cheese pizza. We also ordered the pasta spaghetti al a Ligure, pasta with fresh pesto, prawns, red chili, black olives and home made Napolitana sauce, and lastly, Maccheroni ducale, delicious fresh macaroni in

Pane Caldo:

a creamy chicken, mushroom, and mascarpone sauce. The pizza is definitely one of the best in town, with its thick dough made from fresh Italian flour. The food was so great that we were too full to try the dessert, but we are definitely planning on going back to sample their desserts with their fresh Italian espresso. Pane Caldo is an Italian restaurant that will appeal to all your senses, especially with their emphasis on freshness which jumps off the plate.

In addition, that elusive quality of ‘je ne sais quoi’ will ensure the popularity of any establishment…Mabu has hit upon this winning combination with their new Jeddah branch of their celebrated Beirut restaurant.

Their international menu which specializes in Pan-Asian cuisine (their spring rolls and sushi combos are excellent), as well as French/Italian offerings ensures culinary satisfaction for all diners. The salads and pizzas are fresh and innovative, while the entrees such as the Mabu Grilled Chicken with potato puree and a deliciously rich mushroom sauce and the Salmon Teriyaki served with sautéed spinach and mushrooms both demonstrate the chef’s expert touch. Save room for dessert as the French items are all excellent, in particular the Chocolate Fondant with orange sauce/ vanilla ice cream and the Crème Brule are some of the best in town. Their business lunch special includes a salad, a main entree, and shisha for SR60 - an irresistible invitation to sample both their cuisine and atmosphere.

Good food can be found all over Jeddah…but the elegantly sophisticated atmosphere at Mabu is the singular element which will elevate your meal into a memorable dining experience. Entering the heavy wooden doors and the delightful courtyard is just the first step into the world of Mabu – a surprising restaurant which reveals its secrets as you penetrate the interior rooms past the Moroccan-style foyer with its delicately carved stone-work panels. The main dining room is decorated in purple and black, a stylish combination accented by spotlights and enhanced by subtle mood music and elegant artwork. The ambience is akin to a trendy restaurant in New York or Beirut. The waiters are prompt and attentive, and they’re also knowledgeable about the unique menu items. In fact, it’s so easy to lose yourself in your surroundings that you’ll emerge from your meal with the feeling that you’ve actually made a quick trip abroad!

It’s just before the Farm Grocery Store com-plex, (if you get to Shawarmatac – you’ve gone too far.) They serve up delicious falafel sandwiches for only SR3, plus side orders of hummous, ful, and all the salad accompaniments. Honestly the best falafel sandwiches in Jeddah, they’re tasty, fresh, and oozing with a special sauce! Of course you can always order the falafels a la carte if you’re a purist & prefer to eat the falafels as a portable snack.

Gesaab Sayeedi looks like your typical fruit juice bar, but the gleaming interior and prompt, efficient service set them a notch above your average neighborhood spot. The variety of juices is extensive - select the sugar cane juice with a touch of lime for a truly refreshing drink for SR10/gallon. The freshly squeezed orange is reliably sweet, while their fruit cocktails concoctions are sublime. Prices vary be-tween SR18-20/gallon for most juices.

When it comes to customer service, there really is no gray area - it’s either good or it isn’t. Sadly, White Restaurant & Lounge fails to meet with the standards of customer service that other Jeddah restaurants have achieved.

Initial impressions of White are positive - the all-white concept and decor is soothing and elegant. However, once our large group arrived and was seated, our experience be-gan to go downhill. After waiting a consid-erable amount of time for the waiter to take our orders, our food was finally brought to us...but unfortunately, it wasn’t our food. Belying its cool, calm interior, White is a chaotic space full of shisha smoke, overly loud music, and a constant stream (four times!) of other tables’ orders brought to our own and vice versa.

The positives in this experience was that the salads we had ordered were excellent. However, as much as we enjoyed them, we didn’t enjoy the 30 minute wait between ap-petizers and our main courses. With our ap-petites quickly fading, the main course was finally served...cold. After asking the waiter to reheat the dish, it came back to the table obviously microwaved rather than reheated properly. The vegetables in the various dishes didn’t seem fresh. As the cherry on top, the bill was incorrect.

White Restaurant & Lounge has the poten-tial to be a unique dining destination in Jed-dah. The gorgeous interior and European/International fusion menu will definitely appeal to diners. However, the backbone of any restaurant is flawless customer service and White is lacking in that respect. We hope to visit again in the future and see some much-needed improvements.

Atchoo! Are you always reaching for a tissue to catch your excessive sneezing or dripping nose? Are you constantly clearing your throat, coughing, or having trouble breathing? Chances are your body is reacting to allergens in your environment. Pollution, daily exposure to chemicals/toxins in the environment, and seasonal allergens can all contribute to your nasal misery…but you can alleviate your symptoms without resorting to conventional drugs or allergy medicine.

A 2006 allergy study conducted by the King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah found that 73% of the participants suffered from allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal airways)! The most common allergen culprit was the house dust mite. No matter how clean your house is…these microscopic mites can be found in the crevices of your mattress, your fabric sofa, your carpets etc. But following a few home remedies can help control both the overall level of dust mites in

your home as well as limit their nasty effect upon your body’s immune system.

Environmental Solutions•Encase your mattress in plastic - keep dust mites away from your lungs•Eliminate unnecessary indoor carpeting – stick to stone/tile floors•Use green cleaning products to cut down on chemical exposure•Vacuum frequently instead of dusting – remove dust mites instead of redistributing them!

Medical Solutions•Limit exposure to animals, flowers, known allergens/irritants (ie: perfume, cat dander)•Use saline nasal spray or a ‘neti pot’ to remove allergens from your nasal passages•Use local honey on a daily basis – eat lots of raw fruit/vegetables•Consider acupuncture or allergy shots to desensitize your system

Jeddah's Green Organizations

Going green in Jeddah has never been easier. With several environmental organizations established in recent years, each group provides something for everyone - the casual volunteer, the student, the business looking for CSR opportunities.

FASEELAH - The green group, established in 2009 at Effat University, effects big change in small ways. The organization launched a campaign in order to kick-start recycling at the university and hosts guest lecturers to spread awareness on a host of green issues. Faseelah “promotes an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way of life, through the principles of Islam.”

Contact: [email protected]

GREENation - "Saudi Arabia's first youth-led eco-friendly initiative." This group, which operates out of both Riyadh and Jeddah, began in earnest in July of 2009. The initiative supports other green organizations in the area, such as the KAUST Kompost Cooperation. Founded by Alaa Al-Mizyen, Lulwa Bin Mahfooz, Menal Nour Hussen, Rana Jan, GREENation promotes "green practices...in the name of sustainability."

NAQA’A - A social enterprise with its roots in Dar Al-Hekma's environmental club. The group's vision is to "incorporate ecological life standards with the social values in the society." Naqa'a performs environmental research and implements projects focused on recycling initiatives throughout the community. Naq'aa holds environmental awareness lectures at schools and collaborates with other establishments to introduce environmental awareness throughout Jeddah.

AL-NABTA - Focused on spreading environmental awareness through educational programs, Al-Nabta has held lectures and workshops at several schools in Jeddah. It aims to affect environmental change through the youth of the country. The group also offers their services in designing and developing programs focused on environmental awareness and activities.

FRIENDS OF JEDDAH PARKS - FJP believes that “the quality of neighborhood and city parks is one of the main elements determining livability of urban settlements around the world." A non-profit organization that focuses on renovating public spaces and reforming them into usable recreational areas for Saudi youths, FJP is partnered with the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and the Jeddah Municipality.

RECYCLE YOUR CITY - "An environmental advocacy organization that promotes recycling as a viable alternative to current environmentally destructive waste management practices." Launched in 2008 by the Jeddah Mayor and the the JCCI, Recycle Your City focuses on spreading environmental awareness, supporting individuals and organizations that are interested in going green, and promoting recycling over other harmful practices.

Useful Arabic Words& Pronunciation

Linguists acknowledge that pronunciation is one of the most challenging steps in learning a different language. For example, spoken Arabic has many different dialects, slangs and accents. Some of these dialects can’t be understood by all Arabs. The most common dialects are the Egyptian and the Lebanese. In this article we attempt to shed some light on the traditional Hijazi accent. To illustrate this, we’ve added a picture of a throat to show how the different Arabic letters are pronounced.
