1 Leadership members attended NAR, CAR, and regional MLS and REALTOR® group meetings and events, enhancing the image, reputation, and voice of DAR with others in the real estate industry. Improvements in the MLS have resulted and will continue through cooperation with surrounding area associations and MLS organizations.

Political outreach continued as Association members met with local government elected officials and staff members to discuss matters affecting REALTORS®, their customers, and their communities.

A revitalized Antioch-Pittsburg Broker Tour and Marketing Meeting was started to address the needs of the members working in those cities. There was a strong response, with healthy attendance by those seeking the benefit of networking with their peers and reviewing their listings, wants, needs, and services in a personalized, interactive forum.

The DAR Foundation had an active year, launching a new fundraiser with the Delta Harvest Run and holding a successful Third Rocktoberfest. The activities of the Foundation show the community that REALTORS® care.

Perhaps best of all, many new volunteers have gotten involved in DAR activities for this year and next. That is a healthy sign for our organization. Delta AOR is in good hands next year with Cecily Tippery as 2012 President and Cynthia Alfred as President-Elect. I look forward to helping them as Past President, to continue making Delta Association of REALTORS® a valuable resource for its members. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you, the members of DAR I believe that a lot was accomplished in a challenging 2011 and that DAR is a stronger and more effective association for its members heading into the future.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

As I look back over the past year, serving as your Delta AOR President, I’m struck by the strides made by the Association. The focus of the year was to assess the resources of the Association and the needs of the membership, to make it more effective in fulfilling its Mission of enhancing the success and professionalism of the members.

Early in the year, the Annual Meeting was well attended by members who showed an active interest in the health and direction of the Association. This town hall-style meeting featured DAR leadership volunteers reaching out to members with information and inviting their input and ideas for growing and improving the organization.

Volunteer training is a priority at Delta, and leadership events were held in February and November for Board, Committee, and Foundation Board members, facilitated by consultants from NAR.

A meeting of Past Presidents was convened to gain the benefit of their experience with the Association. It was attended by 15 former Delta Presidents.

Governance of the Association by the Board of Directors and its committees kept a close watch on finances and completed a new strategic plan for the future. A new and more effective Delta website is being planned, and new Association Management software is being implemented to increase efficiency. Leadership visits to several local brokerage offices were made to solicit input and inform members of the Association’s activities on their behalf, as well as educating about member benefits and volunteer opportunities with Delta.

ns Researchers have been working on reflective technology for asphalt roofing shingles since1995. One result of the research was the development of granules that provide superior reflective properties when applied to asphalt shingles. The addition of granules to asphalt shingles creates a combination of the proven weathering performance of asphalt shingles with the energy-saving reflective properties of redesigned roofing granules.

In the past, cool roofs were usually white because light surfaces absorb less solar radiation than dark ones. Property owners prefer nonwhite shingles on a pitched roof for aesthetic reasons. Even though the nominally white roof shin-gles available commercially, are grayish in color, they are unaccepted, despite the solar reflectance.

Between building owner distaste for white roofing on a pitched roof and the need to increase the amount of cool roofing, it became a top priority to cre-ate cool roofing in a selection of colors. The result of the research was a way to manufacture those products using colorants that reflect invisible, near-infrared radiation, which accounts for more than half of the energy in sunlight..

Traditional roofing materials have a solar reflectance index (SRI) of between 5% (brown shingles) and 20% (light green shingles). But reflective asphalt shingles can have an SRI of almost 30%. According to the Cool Roofing Rating Council, Oakland, CA, cool roofs can save a property owner on average 7% to 15% of total cooling costs, depending on geography, building structure, and climate. In addition property owners may also qualify for incentives and rebates for install-ing energy-efficient roofing.

A MESSAGE FROM JOHN BEDFORD, DAR EXECUTIVE OFFICER

First let me say that I’m really proud and happy to be serving this association as your executive officer. It’s been over five years since I turned over listing and selling houses to Doris so that I could take on this job, and I am so pleased because I believe that DAR has really improved during this most difficult real estate market: It’s all due to your excellent board leadership.

Thankfully, you have a talented leadership team - a diverse group of people who are working together to make sure that this association stays relevant and useful to each and every member. Be appreciative of the men and women who have volunteered to be the leaders and decision makers at DAR. They are not “special,” nor are they the “good ole boys.” They are members, just like you.

They have seen the need to be involved. Ralph Garrow, your 2011 President. Cecily Tippery, the incoming President. Cynthia Alfred, current Treasurer and 2012 President Elect. They, along with the other officers and directors, are your leaders. You elected them. It’s very gratifying to observe the extent of their involvement. It tells me that your association has been and da

raen

otes

will continue to be in “good hands” with the volunteer members making important and wise decisions for the association.

You can see that I’m proud of your leaders. I’m also proud of our staff, with three full time and one part-time. This is a great group of people who work hard to keep the assciation running smoothly. It’s not easy.

Right now the association office is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. We answer your questions, send your bills, and collect your payments. We organize education events and clean up after. We make coffee, order food, keep member records, make director’s travel arrangements, and set up and hold ethics and arbitration hearings. We collect your state and national dues and forward them to NAR and CAR, resolve member complaints, set up for special events, pay bills, and create financial statements.

We answer phones, transfer calls, sign up new members, issue keys and cradles, and update website information. We create and publish the email newsletter and create content for the monthly e-magazine, Delta Currents. We coordinate member information with NAR, Supra and EBRDI, handle payroll, update membership and other forms, and prepare statements for the accountant and 1099 forms as needed. Whew!

We keep the store supplied, purchase and sell lockboxes, maintain your lockbox key system, issue keys, change key codes set up and conduct new member orientations, create flyers, sell Store Items and forms, and send member notices. The list goes on and on.

Oh yes, here’s one of my pet peeves. There are only two syllables in the word REALTOR®. Not three. It’s not REL-A-TOR. Help your REALTOR® friends in pronouncing your trademarked title properly. REAL-TOR.

Happy Holidays to All!
