News & Upcoming EventsCELEBRATING OUR OWN

Update from our SeminarianGreetings to my sisters and brothers at St. Paul’s Indianapolis! I am writing to give you one more update of my progress as your seminarian. After the completion of this past semester at Virginia Theological Seminary, I had successfully earned my Masters in Divinity degree.

This was the final requirement that was needed for me to be presented to the Standing Com-mittee and to Bishop Waynick for approval for ordination to the Holy Order of Priests. It was a process that began in 2010, sitting in the pews of St. Paul’s, and I am ever appreciative of the community’s unflagging support. The work that so many volunteers put into my discernment and formation as a priest have truly made this a ministry of the community.

I am also writing to let you know that I have received my first call to serve coming out of seminary. It is with great joy that I accepted the position of curate at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Waco, Texas. It is one of three Episcopal parishes in the quickly growing city of Waco. The architecture of the church itself would be very familiar to any of you who remember your own St. Paul’s before the renovation, and the congregation there is roughly of similar size.

My own charge while serving there is to take the first two years to learn and grow into my vocation as a priest, engaging in continuing education projects, peer group development, and work-life balance in the Diocese of Texas. In addition, a large part of my area of focus will be serving as the campus missioner to Baylor University, where I will be in charge of the Canterbury House and all worship, outreach, and formation for the students there. I am very excited about this new and exciting adventure in a new part of the country with a great community of faith.

All is well with my wife, Katie, and my son, Elliott. The whole Balke family is looking forward to getting to know the Waco area and settle down in our first call out of seminary. It is clear that there is much work to be done—the end of seminary is not the end of a priest’s formation but rather only the end of the beginning of it—but I am blessed to have a wonderful and supportive family along the way with me.

Thank you once again for all your support throughout the years. I hope that we may still be in touch in the years to come—it is a small world af-ter all and we will no doubt continue to cross paths in the future. If any of you should find yourselves in the Waco area, feel free to stop by St. Paul’s Waco and say hello. I shall do the same when I find myself in Indianapolis. Please know that you all have been and will continue to be in my prayers, and may God bless the people of St. Paul’s now and always!

Faithfully, The Rev. Steven M. Balke, Jr.
