Northside Achievement Zone

The Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) began in 2003 as the PEACE Foundation, which used grassroots organizing to reduce violence in North Minneapolis. By 2008, organiz-ers and residents drew on the inspirational results of the Harlem Children’s Zone and they pulled together to explore solutions to issues that continued to plague the neigh-borhood. Today, NAZ leads a collaboration among 40+ partners, which includes schools and nonprofit organizations that work together on a single goal to end multigenerational poverty through education.

The Northside Achievement Zone is a bold and innovative effort to close the educational achievement gap in North Minneapolis.

Northside Achievement Zone

NAZ uses a data-driven, evidence-based, achievement-focused model in which both children and their families move through a “cradle-to-ca-reer” ecosystem that provides comprehensive support to families and their children.

The Northside Achievement Zone operates as one integrated program across multiple partners, with NAZ families at the center. Together these partners provide families with an unbroken ecosystem of best-practice supports from prenatal development through college and career. Each of these supports builds toward measurable academic out-comes for children.

As the Northside Achievement Zone learns which measures effectively address the com-plex issues related to urban poverty, it develops best practices and strategies. These take the form of blueprints, called NAZ Results Plans. These evidence-based peer-re-viewed plans receive ongoing scrutiny for continuous improvement. Importantly, Results Plans are designed to be replicated by communities throughout the country - thereby multiplying NAZ’s positive effect exponentially.

In 2012, the Northside Achievement Zone was awarded a $28 million, five-year Prom-ise Neighborhood Implementation grant by the United States Department of Education. This seed money supported NAZ as it successfully scaled its pilot program and vastly increased family enrollment.

The results speak for themselves. The Northside Achievement Zone’s game-changing approach works. The youngest scholars (students) are ready for kindergarten at un-precedented rates. In anchor schools where NAZ strategies and out-of-school support are integrated, NAZ scholars perform substantially better than non-NAZ scholars. The organization’s two-generation approach shows that families are stabilizing their housing, employment, and health. These documented successes are driving a culture change on the Northside and assisting the community in ways that until now were unimagined.

North Minneapolis

Incorporated as a city in 1867, Minneapolis is named for the Dakota word “Minne” (mean-ing “of the waters”) and the Greek word “polis” (meaning “city”); fitting for a town that contains 22 lakes. Today, Minneapolis and its twin city, St. Paul, have over 3 million resi-dents. Together they make up the 14th largest metropolitan area in the country. The city of Minneapolis officially consists of 11 distinct communities determined by the City Council. Each of these is further defined by the many neighborhoods that reflect the character of the area.

North Minneapolis encompasses two of the 11 communities - Near North and Camden. Together they encompass 15 of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods the city has to offer.

The arts are an important part of the cultural expression in North Minneapolis. With over 10 art spaces or public galleries, the district celebrates the arts each July with a three-day arts crawl known as FLOW. This self-guided tour takes visitors through studios, galleries and theaters along the West Broadway corridor that forms the backbone of the area. North Minneapolis also has more than 15 public parks, with picnic areas, baseball fields, foot paths, wading pools and playgrounds. On Fridays during the summer, residents can enjoy the West Broadway Farmers Market, which brings healthy food to the neighbor-hood while promoting economic development and providing a lively gathering space for everyone in the area.

Vibrant NeighborhoodsWhen people live in close proximity and develop social ties they form a community and a neighborhood is born. Neighborhoods naturally take on the culture of the people within their borders. The citizens of North Minneapolis represent a wide spectrum of culturally diverse people that have come together to form some of the most unique communities in the city.

• Cleveland Neighborhood - Considered by locals to be a small neighborhood with a big heart, the Cleveland neighborhood is a mostly residential area. It is centrally located with easy ac-cess to shopping, recreational areas and employment centers.

• Folwell Neighborhood - As a predominantly residential neighborhood, Folwell includes over 2,000 households with a total population over 6,000. With its 27 acres, Folwell Park is one of

the largest parks in the metro area offering nearby residents a full set of outdoor amenities.• Harrison Neighborhood - Once known as Finn Town for the predominance of Finnish immi-

grants, Harrison has evolved into a multi-racial area that includes one of Prince’s boyhood homes.

• Hawthorne Neighborhood - The Hawthorne neighborhood is also the home of Farview Park (Minneapolis’ oldest park), the Nellie Stone Johnson School, and the Orvin Olson Park near the Mississippi River.

• Heritage Park - Originally known as the Sumner-Glenwood neighborhood, this small en-clave encompasses just 15 city blocks. The area has seen significant revitalization in recent years through the assistance of Hope grants and other public funding.

• Jordan - Named after Charles Morison Jordan, one of the city’s historical figures in pub-lic education, this neighborhood centers on the junior high school, which bears the same name. Residents have reclaimed this neighborhood adding a community garden and work-ing together to keep Jordan park a beautiful natural amenity.

• Lind-Bohanon Neighborhood - This neighborhood is one of the north side’s greenest neigh-borhoods, centered on two naturalized landscapes - Bohanon park and the North Missis-sippi Regional Park.

• McKinley - Named for the former President of the United States, this neighborhood sits along the west bank of the Mississippi River. This mainly residential neighborhood includes Perkins Hill Park, a well-kept green space for residents to enjoy.

• Old Highland - Designated as a “Best Old House Neighborhood” by the popular This Old House magazine, this beautiful part of town includes some of the most vibrant revitalization projects in the city.

• Shingle Creek - Named for the meandering creek that flows through this neighborhood, this area is filled with historic landmarks and a rich urban history.

• Upper Willard Homewood - An area for community artists, this neighborhood includes Homewood Studios, founded on the belief that artists in residence contribute to the vibran-cy of the community.

• Victory Neighborhood - This neighborhood is named for the beautiful parkway that winds through the area - Victory Memorial Drive.

• Webber Camden - One of the largest neighborhoods in the district, this area includes both industrial zones and a mix of middle-class and working class homes.
