Hands up who worries that their teenagermight be at risk from potential childabusers when they go online.It’s a valid concern but did you know thatwe adults are also at risk from thosesame offenders?In the early days of the internet people,including potential offenders, believed theweb offered complete anonymity. Thosedays are gone. High profile celebrityprosecutions have ensured thatpaedophiles now make every effort toconceal their identity.Activity on home internet accounts is easyto trace and no offender wants to lead thepolice straight to their front door so theydevelop ways to cover their tracks andone of the latest is ‘piggybacking’. This isthe unauthorised use of another person’swireless broadband connection.Piggybacking masks the identity of anoffender. They can download or distributeoffensive, illegal material via anunsecured Wi-Fi connection withouthaving to register a service in their ownname. Worryingly that unsecured Wi-Ficonnection may be yours.A staggering one in six Wi-Fi connectionsin the UK is left unprotected and thisopens the way for abuse to occur. TheWashington Post recently reported such acase in the US. Police arrived with awarrant at an apartment block in ArlingtonCounty, Virginia. They were there toarrest a man suspected of distributingchild pornography via his internet

connection. However, the owner of theapartment in question turned out to be anelderly lady with an open Wi-Ficonnection which covered ten storeys ofher building.In this instance the police had to drop theinvestigation but it begs the question:what if she hadn’t been an elderly ladybut a single, middle-aged man? Wi-Fipiggybacking raises the real prospect ofsomeone being investigated or evenconvicted of a crime committed via theirinternet connection of which they areentirely innocent. Even if the police canseparate the crime from the connection-owner the mere threat of police scrutinycan have devastating consequences:people have committed suicide whilebeing investigated for such offences.Take a look at your Wi-Fi connection.Does it use WPA (wireless protectedaccess) encryption or the older, hackable,WEP (wired equivalent privacy)? Is itpassword protected? Both the connectionand the router should be protected andthe passwords should be strong: arandom series of letters and numbers isthe most difficult type of password tohack. Hide the router’s SSID (service setidentifier) to minimise the chance of itbeing compromised. Finally, if yoususpect your connection has beenviolated, report it.By protecting ourselves we make it moredifficult for those who want to harm ourchildren which can only be a good thing.

It’s not just ourchildren we need toworry about. Adultscan fall victim too.

Japanese Maples are surely one of themost beautiful trees. They produce thewonderful foliage in a variety of colours.Add to this the fact that they neverbecome too large and you have a treewhich could have been specificallydesigned for small suburban plots.Acer palmatum is the base variety. It’s ahandsome enough small tree with neatlycut green leaves, but the ‘wow’ factorreally sets in when we get to some of itsvarieties.My favourite is “Atropurpureum”. It is anelegant tree which only reaches 10 feet /3m tall in 15 years. Its leaves arecrimson when they open then turn a richshade of burgundy as they mature. It’sbeautiful in any position but for maximumimpact plant it where you will see the sunshine through the leaves.The feathery-leaved varieties are alsostunning. Their slightly weeping habitgives them a graceful appearance.“Dissectum” is plain green, while“Dissectum Atropurpureum” is a duskyplum colour.For full sun Acer palmatum “Bloodgood”holds the red colour of its leaves best.For a shadier spot try the more delicate“Orange Dream” which opens with freshyellow-orange spring growth and turnslime green in summer.

Acers do prefer a rich, slightly acidic soil,but fortunately for those of us with less-than-perfect growing conditions manyvarieties grow well in pots.Acer palmatum “Little Princess” would bemy first choice. It is such a pretty plantwith small, bright green leaves edgedwith deep red. Being a dwarf variety itwill only reach 1.5m / 5 ft and it producesa lovely display of red foliage in theautumn as a bonus.To grow a Japanese Maple in a pot usea large container and a John Innes No.2potting compost.Every spring remove the top few inchesof compost and replace it with fresh. Thistop-dressing will ensure that the plantstays healthy and vigorous.All maples prefer shelter. Persistent coldwinds dry the leaves and turn thembrown. They are also quite thirsty plantsand it is important not to let the roots dryout.Really, in spite of their exoticappearance they are not at all tricky togrow, and they lend an air of elegantsophistication to any garden. Try one asa specimen plant and I’m betting thatyou’ll add another soon after...andanother...
