About 40 years ago, when I was 13 years old, a schoolmate of mine named Butch became the first young African American man in my life to be murdered by another young African American man. Butch was so innocent; he was just an all-around good kid. His murderer, Patrick, but for the harsh conditions he was brought up in, would have been considered “good.” He was in a way also innocent because he didn’t choose to be born in a country that too often stereotyped him as a criminal than a future college graduate. He didn’t raise his hands to be born to the into poverty caused by generations of an unjust system or to parents whom themselves lived with trauma due to historic, persistent and institutional racism. Nor did he volunteer to grow up in a community plagued by isolation, neglect, disinvestment and policy-induced disparities.

Are all young African American men who grow up in harsh conditions murderers and victims? Not by a long shot. I can tell you stories about Marcus, De’Vonte, and James–all young men in NAZ studying and working hard with the love of their community and parents to be smart, courageous, and prepared for their limitless futures. Though Butch and Patrick are in the minority, aspects of their stories are all too real and persistent. Our solutions to their challenges, however, have been costly and short-lived.

At NAZ We are creating ‘LASTING CHANGE,” by not just focusing on the problems themselves; instead, we are shifting the conditions that are holding the problems in place in the first place–this is called, ‘systems change.’ Together with our 1,163 parents, 2,416 scholars, 40+ non-profit partners and schools, and YOU, we are going beyond perennial short-lived progress by focusing on the layered and interconnected challenges our children and families face.

To do this, we did a number of things in 2018 like changing the way we work by strengthening our focus on parent leadership and power. We hired our first Parent Advocacy Leader to work alongside our parent leadership group. We changed our organizational structure to become more collaborative, allowing our partners to better align their contributions with ours as experts in their respective areas. We created a Community Wellness Framework for our staff, community, and our partner schools to heal racialized trauma giving the adults across our collaborative the self-knowledge and tools needed to bring about racial equity from the classroom to the conference room. We worked to remove barriers to parent and scholar success by changing policies, practices and the flow of resources to what works to end multi-generational poverty. As a result, we’ve seen major results as outlined in this annual report–NAZ is Working!

In 2019, let’s stay focused on what is most important–ending racial disparities in education, income, housing, and health so that the families of the Northside enjoy the blessings of liberty and prosperity in equal portions to the rest of our region. Together–we got this!
