An Introduction to the Project
In November 2009, Workingtons Northside Bridge was swept away during devastating floods in Cumbria,
tragically killing PC Bill Barker who was on the bridge diverting traffic. The collapse of the landmark bridge
effectively split the town in two, resulting in an 18-mile round trip to get from one end of Workington to
the other. Following the collapse, the Army erected a temporary footbridge named Barkers Crossing
in memory of Bill Barker and this was dismantled to allow for a multi-million pound construction of
Northside Bridge.
The works involved the fabrication and construction of a 152m three-span composite steel/concrete
highway bridge, being erected in the same position as the former structure over the River Derwent. The
bridge reinstated pedestrian, vehicular and cycle access along the A597, which provides the main highway
link to Workington from outlying areas. The structure is supported on concrete piers with bored pile
foundations. The completed bridge was clad in sandstone, similar to that used on the original structure
with reclaimed stone. Sandstone blocks were actually recovered from the collapsed structure of the bridge
and stored for re-use in the replacement.
The construction project was funded by the Department of Transport at an approximate cost of 11 million.
Carried out over a 50+ week contract, A-Plant Acrow worked alongside the contractors Birse Civils and
Mabey Bridge, the supplier of the steel beams, to provide a unique solution to help Workington become
connected once again.

Cantilever String Course Formwork Solution
A-Plant Acrow was heavily involved in the consultation and design process for the new Northside Bridge.
Through this we were awarded the work for the supply of the formwork for the pier bases, along with
producing detailed schemes for the North and South abutments, which included design for a specially
fabricated formwork end bull nose using Slimlite Soldiers and Mammoth Panels so the abutment could be
cast as one.
Following several visits to site, the experienced A-Plant Acrow Sales and Engineering Team devised a
bespoke solution using a range of Acrow formwork products. Primarily based on the ESS21 Parapet
Support System developed in-house, A-Plant were able to utilise our expertise in the market to ensure that
Birse Civils and Mabey Bridge had a cost-effective, flexible and practical solution to enable construction of
the bridge that had a curve on plan and elevation with inclined soffit on the cantilever.
The ESS21 parapet formwork is a system of components that allows the user to construct cantilever
formwork off the edges of steel beams. For this project it was clear from the start that due to the complex
curve and slope on the new bridge we would need to provide tables of various lengths to fit its geometry.
As part of the agreement the contractor built all the tables in the yard at the A-Plant Acrow depot in Glasgow
and tagged the tables with a code number. With the aid of two yard staff and a forklift for their use they
completed the tables in just one week, which enabled a significant cost saving for the table assembly. The
system was of further benefit to the construction of the bridge deck cantilevers and as there was no lay downarea on the site where the tables could be built.
A-Plant then delivered all the items to site, and by creating a temporary jig onsite the contractor was able to
basically clip and pin all the parts together quickly and efficiently, before they were lifted into place. Once
lifted the tables were connected to bridge beams via a simple triangular frame that was tied back using a tie
rod. This then provided the base to set the forms and cast the concrete.
The bridge cantilever formwork was erected to provide access along each edge and allow the sequential
pours to be carried out. The design called for loads to be applied from the new deck in a precise process to
ensure stability while the structure was being constructed. Due to the complex nature of this project, withsome of the bridge being over a road and some over water, the formwork was attached to the beams at
various stages before eventually the main 66m and 88t centre beams were spectacularly and with expertise
precision lifted by crane into place.
Opened by Princess Anne in October 2012
A-Plant Acrow is proud to have played such a
key role in facilitating construction of this new
structure.
