A tradition unlike any other returns once again to Emerald Greens Country Club and Carrollwood Village. Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s this coun- try club put on one of the best Independence Day fireworks shows in all of Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, the show didn’t go on. Last year the new owners and management of Emerald Greens (formerly Carrollwood Country Club) made it their mission to bring this great event back to the community to enjoy. And boy did they succeed! On Thursday, May 2nd theNeighborhood News ran a very flat-tering article featuring Hattie'sCafe & Beanery. The article high-lighted our dedication to providingfresh, unique foods and specialtycoffees, along with our personal-ized customer service. We antici-pated seeing an increase in businessdue to the story, but we were un-prepared for the intense volume ofguests that we received the follow-ing Saturday.

To our great embarrassment,we were so busy as a direct resultof the Carrollwood community’ssupport of our cafe that we wereunable to provide the level of guestservice and customer interactionthat we demand from ourselves.While everyone enjoyed their food,there was one busy point in theday where many orders took muchtoo long to be served. This is un-acceptable. We admit we were notprepared for such a heavy volumeof visitation. We apologize sin-

cerely to each of our guests whohad to wait so long for their food.

At close of business, that day,we revisited our high-volume pro-tocols to help serve our guests bet-ter and more quickly. The nextday, we implemented those policiesand used them to serve an evenhigher volume of guests, this timewithout the wait or depersonalizedservice. Everyone got their food ina timely fashion and they were ableto enjoy it while engaging withtheir friends, family, and commu-nity – and THAT is what Hat-tie's is all about.

If you were a part of the crowdwho got stuck in that Saturday

rush, we would like a chance toapologize personally to you. Tomake amends, please come inany time during the month ofJune and mention this letter;Make yourself known to us andwe will gladly give you 10% offyour order. Community Calendar Chamberlain High SchoolNeeds Your Help!!

The Chamberlain High SchoolAthletic Booster Club welcomes yoursupport in raising funds to resurface theexisting asphalt track with a latex sur-face. The CHS track, installed in the late1950s is scheduled for repaving. Theirgoal is to raise $80,000, and with addi-tional funding from the School Districtof Hillsborough County restore the richtradition of track and field to Chamber-lain High School by resurfacing with amodern latex material.

Currently, seven HillsboroughCounty public schools have the latexsurface; with several schools scheduledfor resurfacing over the next few years.It is becoming more difficult to field ateam and stay competitive with otherhigh school track programs without thelatex surface. With your help Chamber-lain High School can change that byraising funds for a new and improvedsurface on which to run, as the otherHillsborough County public schoolshave in the past few years.

Chamberlain athletes are a dedicatedgroup of young men and women withseveral state champions in recent years.Think of how many more outstandingathletes Chamberlain could produce withupdated training facilities. The season begins the week of June15th, with all games played on Satur-days following practice. There are noweekday practices.

The program is for boys and girls,ages 3 to 14, and players of all skill levelsare welcome. I9 Sports has a strongfocus on fun, safety and convenience.There are no tryouts and each child re-ceives equal playing time. Each week theplayers are taught sportsmanship valuesthat can be used throughout their lives.

Les Misérables Les Misérables School Edition will

Now open to Carrollwood resi-dents, the Carrollwood Village SwimTeam is hosting a fun, interactive sum-mer camp designed to teach your childthe essentials of swimming and poolsafety. The camps are broken in togroups:

rative effort among the University ofSouth Florida’s School of Music, theCarrollwood Cultural Center andTampa Bay Harvest. The program wasdesigned to help with the increasingneed for food aid in the Tampa Baycommunity. Members of the TampaMetropolitan Youth Orchestra andfriends from Tampa’s youth music com-munity will team up to present a concertof classical chamber music for this finalconcert of the inaugural season of IfMusic Be the Food. Corbett Preparatory of IDS’ 7thgrade math team won first place at theFirst Annual Independent DivisionMath Competition held at BerkeleyPrep on Sat., April 27.

HIMSS Analytics HonorsFlorida Hospital Carrollwoodwith Stage 7 Award

HIMSS Analytics announced thatFlorida Hospital Carrollwood, an Ad-ventist Health System facility, has re-ceived the acute care Stage 7 award. Theaward represents attainment of the high-est level on the Electronic MedicalRecords Adoption ModelSM(EMRAM), which is used to track EMRprogress at hospitals and health systems.

HIMSS Analytics developed theEMR Adoption Model in 2005 as amethodology for evaluating the progressand impact of electronic medical recordsystems for hospitals in the HIMSS Ana-lytics™ Database. There are eight stages

(0-7) that measure a hospital’s imple-mentation and utilization of informationtechnology applications. The final stage,Stage 7, represents an advanced patientrecord environment. The validationprocess to confirm a hospital hasreached Stage 7 includes a site visit byan executive from HIMSS Analytics andformer or current chief information offi-cers to ensure an unbiased evaluation ofthe Stage 7 environments.

The hospital will be recognized atthe 2014 Annual HIMSS Conferenceand Exhibition on Feb. 24-26, 2014, inOrlando. As of Quarter 1, 2013, FloridaHospital Carrollwood, is among the106 U.S. facilities, or 1.95 percent, ofthe more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals inthe HIMSS Analytics® Database, to beawarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7Award.

“Florida Hospital Carrollwood isproud to be able to take the lead in pa-tient safety through our use of elec-tronic medical records (EMR) inHillsborough County,” said Joe John-son, Florida Hospital CarrollwoodCEO. Ad-vantages to this level of technologicaladvancement include the ability to sharepatient information with other healthcare providers via a secure standardizedsummary record and using a vast data-base of clinical information to improve

Weather Forecast at CorbettPrep: Sunny with a Chance ofSnow?

Prepared with mittens, extra socks,scarves and hats, the Early Primary stu-dents geared up for a “snow day” aspart of their interactive, experiential les-son on the effects of weather.

Students in PreK4 and Kindergartenbegan the unit by experiencing the watercycle as they transformed into water mol-ecules moving from classroom to class-room. They started as part of the oceanshining in the sun. As the little “mole-cules” were heated, they evaporated andformed clouds amidst a sea of mist andfog. Once they condensed as clouds, theyfell as chilly precipitation upon a snowymountain to be absorbed into the earthto nourish plants and grass.

To understand how change in the

wind impacts the weather, the small sci-entists traveled to Lake Park to fly kitesin order to see and feel how wind cre-ates lift.

The weather patterns thematic unitat Corbett Prep integrates the Interna-tional Baccalaureate (IB) focus on howweather patterns inform, prepare, andaffect the daily lives of people aroundthe world.

Always encouraging students to askquestions, Early Primary teachers use aninquiry approach to create joyful experi-ences that engage the students in allphases of their learning. The areas of in-quiry for this unit included weather pat-terns, classification of clouds, and

meteorological instruments. As a special celebration of the

weather unit, PreK4 teacher AshleighElozory asked Dan Shaffer, ABC ActionNews anchor and former meteorologist,to pay the junior meteorologists a visitto “talk about the weather.”

“What is it called when water con-denses from the atmosphere?” Mr. Shaf-fer asked.

Little hands flew up. A proud PreK4student exclaimed, “precipitation!”

“What are examples of precipita-tion?”

“HAIL! SNOW! RAIN!”“The kids asked very intelligent

questions” says news anchor Dan Shaf-fer. “I am impressed with the level of so-phistication of their comments andquestions. From precipitation to cloudstructures, these PreK4 and Kinder-garten students knew their weather!”

Simulating professional meteorolo-gists, Kindergarten students will presenttheir own reports to their classmatesafter researching weather patterns ofcities they have selected from aroundthe world. The reports will include highand low temperatures, precipitation,wind, and preparations/weather warn-ings. Technology teacher, Matt Melnick,will video their reports in the school’sTV studio for the students to share withtheir families.

You could easily have spent a cou-ple of hours (as I did) taking in thevarious sights, sounds and aromaswhile meandering through the pleas-antly tree-shaded grove. Indeed, I wasthrilled to learn that The Fresh Marketat Westchase Town Center became theNorth Tampa Market at the Carroll-wood Cultural Center this month,moving this wonderful market to theCarrollwood community. The NorthTampa Market, which was held di-rectly behind the Carrollwood Cul-tural Center, will take place at thissame location every second Saturdayof the month, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. –rain or shine!

Even before stepping foot on themarket grounds, you could smell thefood vendors preparing for the lunchcrowd that would soon descend uponthem. Not yet feeling terribly hungry,I walked a little further and my eyesfeasted on a positively radiant displayof nature’s bounty – huge peppers,multi-colored heads of cauliflower,sumptuous fruit and vegetables galore.I thought, how truly fortunate we are

to have a bevy of local growers, bakers,and artisans, and even better, havethem come to set up shop for us toenjoy every month!

After chatting with a number ofbooth owners, it became evident thatthe shade provided by the tree canopywas indeed a welcome relief. Severalfolks had noted how cruel the suncould be when bouncing off asphaltparking lots – both for the vendors

and their inventory, as well as the cus-tomers sampling their wares. Needlessto say, everyone seemed relativelycomfortable and unimpeded by theheat of the day.

Do you have pets? If you do, theyare very welcome to join the festivitiesall through the market. As a matter ofnote, I have two grand dogs that keepme company a couple of days a weekand they positively loved the goodies

growl, big time. I nosed my way backto the food vendors’ row of boothsand found Brooklyn Knish, wherethere’s “A bit of heaven Wrapped inPastry” with “Warm memories on theside.” Yum. I had a thirst that neededquenching at this point; so a few stepstoward the back offered me the perfectsolution – freshly squeezed lemonade!Delicious.

Continuing on, there were wineslushies to try, olive oils to sample, aswell as recycled and fused glass designsto buy; and then I had to just stop fora minute. An engaging young boy was

creating the most beautifully,intricate origami flowers,(and for a small donation,one became mine) with theproceeds benefiting kids withautism. I truly love the factthat this is a caring and shar-ing community event thathas something for everyone.While most of us were shop-ping, there were even kidsdancing and frolicking onthe lawn to live music. Fun!

While I felt like I got alay of the land on my firstventure, I’m looking forwardto seeing new vendors partic-ipating next month andwatching this enterprise ex-

pand through the entire back lot.Who knows, maybe we’ll have achance to run into each other nextmonth. See you there!

sphere weaknessMother Nancy Lucas first noticed

something was unique with her

daughter Cynthia when Cynthia wasover a year old. Nancy says, “She wasalready talking non stop and by theage of two she was speaking full sen-tences and paragraphs. Cynthia and Iboth were born very gifted with lan-guage.” But it wasn’t until Cynthiaturned three that Nancy recognizedthat something might be wrong.Nancy says, “By the age of three, weknew something wasn’t right. She hada hard time with self – regulation andcalming down; going to bed and tak-ing naps was also a challenge for her.She was hard to manage and it was ex-asperating. Food was also an issue forher, especially the texture. It had to bea certain consistency or she wouldn’teat it. She was also hyper sensitive andwas greatly affected by noise andlacked the ability to withdraw if shegot upset.”

After years of dealing with the be-havior and endless hours spent search-ing for a solution, Nancy was at herbreaking point. She says, “We triedeverything – diets, food allergy testing,counseling for both her and me, at-tachment disorder training, and hadspent over three years and endless dol-

lars in conscious discipline classes onhow to manage children. I would goaway for weeks at a time to differentseminars and read over a dozen books,and still it didn’t change the outcome.She was also extremely thin; her bodycouldn't absorb the food. We fed herhealthy food but her body wasn't pro-cessing her foods. Her motor skillswere a big one and sports were a chal-

lenge for here, due to the lack of coor-dination of the left and right sides ofthe brain.”

It was at this time that Nadinemet Laura Crumley and set up an ap-pointment to have Luke assessed. Itwas a two day assessment. At BrainBalance, they don’t diagnose; insteadthey pin point the problem - Luke hadissues with weakness on the left side ofthe brain.

“A lot of their non invasive testsshowed us why he was having issues;for instance – his eyes,” says Nadine.“His vision was fine, but it’s the wayhis eyes communicated with his brainthat was the problem. They had a so-lution which included a series of dif-ferent exercises to strengthen his eyes.We learned the importance of corestrength and brain function – and theyhad exercises for that as well. We alsolearned all about the importance offood sensitivity and how that can af-fect your child’s behavior and learn-ing.”

It was then that Nadine decidedto sign Luke up for Brain Balance,which consisted of one hour sessionsthree times a week, in addition tohome exercises, and nutrition changes.Nadine says, “We started seeing a re-markable difference in his overall atti-tude within the first week. He stoppedcomplaining so much and he washappy all the time. Towards the end ofthe program I was able to have a fullblown conversation with my son, with

him being able to understand andcomprehend what I was saying. Hisrelationships with his father, brother,aunt, and friends all got so much bet-ter. Instead of everybody being frus-trated all the time, we were all happyand having fun. As far as his learningchallenges go, he is in a normal rangenow. For the first time ever he has justmade honor roll. Thanks to Brain Bal-ance he now has confidence and feelssmart. He actually says that his brainis working right now. I just wish wewould have found Brain Balancesooner; but better late than never!”

was going through. Nancy says, “Heis the first person that really under-stood what I was going through andwhat Cynthia was going through. Hegave us hope, and when we went toBrain Balance and Cynthia got the as-sessment – dysfunctional hemisphericimbalance (weak on the right side ofthe brain) – there was no question inmy mind that this approach wouldn’twork. My husband and I were con-vinced.”

Cynthia started at the center inMarch 2012, which consisted of threeone-hour visits each week. With exer-cises uniquely tailored for her individ-ual needs, Cynthia worked oneverything from physical activities andmultitasking, to creative writing andlogical thinking.

The change happened almost in-stantly. Within the first month Cynthiawas willing to eat more foods and hersense on smell improved. Most impor-tantly, she was able to sit down and eatbecause now she had enough ability toself- regulate to be calm enough toeat. Her outbursts became less fre-quent and less violent and her overallbehavior dramatically improved.“Within three weeks of her startingthe program I could see a difference,”says Nancy. “Brain Balance was a com-plete miracle. “I love Laura Crumley,Center Director and Larry and therest of the staff at Brain Balance, and Iam so grateful for what they havedone in our lives. Cynthia is free, sheis healed, and she is able to move for-ward in her life. She is now the de-lightful little girl that I always dreamedof raising!”

Luke Henderson – A left hemi-sphere weakness

Mother Nadine Henderson firstbecame concerned about her sonLuke when at 18 months old he wasstill not speaking words and as he gotolder, would make up his own lan-

guage which sounded much like Chi-nese. The older he got, the more shebegan to notice that he had a reallyshort attention span and had severalsensory issues. She says, “We couldnever take him to a grocery store orrestaurant because of all the distrac-tions; he would misbehave from sen-sory overload.” Transitioning was alsoa big challenge, but more on a longspan as opposed to immediate. For ex-ample, if he stayed with his grandpar-ents for the weekend, it would take2-3 days for him to adjust to hisschedule; the same thing would applyif he had time off of school, etc. Dueto lack of comprehension, Luke’s ex-hibited ‘bad behavior’, which resultedin lots of frustration for the wholefamily, and especially Luke.

When Nadine had Luke tested atthe age of 3, they were told he had se-vere delays in language, speech, com-prehension and fine motor skills andwas showing signs of autism. But, de-spite all this, Luke was never given aspecific diagnosis. Nadine says, “Sinceage 3 he was in the FDLRS program,and continued with IEP’s in Kinder-garten through 3rd grade. He hadOccupational therapy, speech therapy,and language therapy.”

The breaking point came in thethird grade, when Luke was placedwith a new teacher that Nadine feltwas not suited for him. “He had a newlanguage therapist who he wouldcomplain about, which never hap-pened before,” says Nadine. “He al-ways loved the therapists. He couldnot focus with her because he washighly distracted by her breath andfoot smell – a sensory issue.” After histeacher was out half the year due toher daughter’s illness, Luke had sub-stitute teachers most of the time, andwith his transition challenges, it causedhim to come home, having broken allsorts of rules. He couldn’t keep fo-cused, which in turn ended with no

On November 13, 2012,beloved local chiropractor Dr. NealSayers died in a tragic accident. Onbehalf of Dr. Sayers' staff and all ofhis patients, in honor of Father’sDay, we are writing this to not onlyacknowledge him as the wonderfulfather he was, but also to celebrate allhe brought to the lives of the peoplewho loved him. We still cannot de-scribe the heartbreak we feel at hispassing; we miss him – not just as anamazing doctor – but as a father,mentor, and dear friend.

“Doc” had the greatest sense ofhumor; the party didn't start until hewalked in! He was obsessed withLady Gaga's “On the Edge ofGlory,” and his competitive naturewouldn't allow anyone else to win,even if it meant going 12 rounds ofWii boxing! And, if he had a trade-marked sound effect, it would’vebeen the incessant pen clicking.

But that was just his fun,slightly Type-A side, personality.

Overall, he was selfless and humble–someone who exuded humility andgrace. His ability to discern whensomething was wrong and offer in-sight was uncanny, and we all bene-fited from it. He was a man of God,who not only fulfilled his purpose asa doctor healing the body, but by al-lowing God to speak through himto heal souls.

Although he gave his love toeveryone unconditionally, undeni-ably, his family was his heart. He wasdedicated to providing for them inevery way.

We honor you today and everyday, Dr. Sayers, as our guiding influ-ence. Not only did you raise threeboys with an unshakable foundation,but you helped raise us as your

daughters. We are heartbroken and selfishly

miss your presence, but we are hum-bled to see the manifestation of yourpositive impact on your staff, pa-tients, family, friends, and commu-nity. We love you, miss you, blessyou, bring honor to your name, andpraise God for you, our belovedboss, father, and friend.
