From The Editor Alexis Selby

As the holidays quickly approach, bringing along with them a whirlwindof festivities and celebrations, I wouldlike to take this opportunity to wishyou all a wonderful Thanksgiving fromall of us here at the Carrollwood AreaNeighborhood News & Lifestyles. From our dedicated advertisers to ourloyal readers, it is you we have tothank for our continued success andgrowth over the past few years. It is allof us working together that keeps ourcommunity strong – from our localbusiness owners to all the other hard-working employees and entrepreneursthat call this area home.

To so many, Thanksgiving is notjust about getting together and cele-brating with family and friends over adelicious meal of turkey, sweet pota-toes, and pumpkin pie, but also signi-fies a time to reflect on the past yearand give thanks for the many bless-ings in their lives – including the joy-

ous opportunity to be united forsuch an occasion.

This Thanksgiving I would like totake the opportunity to say how grate-ful I am to be part of such an extraordi-nary community! The past few years Ihave been writing for the Neighbor-hood News & Lifestyles I have had thechance to meet so many amazing localbusiness owners and they have reallyleft a lasting impression! They are someof the most dedicated, honest, hard-working people I have ever met, who,no matter how busy, will still find timeand money to support local school pro-grams, athletics programs and manyother great charities. It has been a realpleasure getting to know the people inthis community and I look forward tomany great years to come!

The Neighborhood News &Lifestyles team would also like tothank you, all of our readers, for yourcontinued support over the past few

Happy Thanksgiving fromNeighborhood News & Lifestyles

years. We wish you a prosperous andbountiful Thanksgiving and manyhappy years to come!

This Thanksgiving, millions ofpeople across the country will cometogether with their closest friends andfamily. Wherever you may be and how-ever you may celebrate, I encourageyou to think about the many things inyour life that you have to be thankfulfor and take a moment to show grati-tude and appreciation.

As Henri J.M. Nouwen once said,“Gratitude goes beyond the ‘mine’and ‘thine’ and claims the truth that allof life is a pure gift. In the past I alwaysthought of gratitude as a spontaneousresponse to the awareness of gifts re-ceived, but now I realize that gratitudecan also be lived as a discipline. Thediscipline of gratitude is the explicit ef-fort to acknowledge that all I am andhave is given to me as a gift of love, agift to be celebrated with joy.”

The Friendship Singers – Bringing Joy Through Love of Singing

By Marcy Sanford

For nearly 20 years The Friend-ship Singers have been entertaininggroups at senior citizen and assistedliving homes throughout Hillsbor-ough and Pasco County. This Decem-ber they’ll be celebrating their 20thanniversary and founder Delores Gastis thrilled with the way the group hasgrown since its beginning. “Twentyyears ago I was retiring from my job of22 years as a church choir director.Several choir members came up to meafter I’d retired and said they wanted

to keep singing with me. After talkingit over, we decided that there was aneed for a choir group to sing to peo-ple at senior citizen and assisted livinghomes. Our first concert was at ShadyPalms Retirement Home in Decemberof 1994.”

Since that first concert TheFriendship Singers have grown from12 members to more than 40 andthey’ve entertained thousands of peo-ple. “We perform twice a month,” saysDelores. “The most wonderful part ofbeing in The Friendship Singers is tosee the happy faces of the residents

Delores says that the group isopen to anyone who is interested insinging, “our youngest member is ahigh school student and our oldest is92 years old. We have people who liveall over the area from Dade City toCarrollwood, Odessa to WesleyChapel. In addition to the joy we getfrom performing for nursing homeresidents, we have all become like fam-ily to each other. It is a wonderfulgroup of people.”

Friendship Singers member JoeBerling agrees that the group is awonderful way to volunteer and meet

other people. “Mywife and I were look-ing for volunteerwork when we cameacross informationabout the group. Ihad been in my highschool glee club andwe both enjoyedsinging. It is wonder-ful to see the happi-ness that we bring toresidents. Usually we

sing songs from the 30s, 40s, 50s, or60s - songs that will be familiar to theresidents of the home. We also try totake a stuffed animal or other gift togive to every resident. It is a great wayto volunteer while doing somethingyou love.”

While the enclosuresare large, we all know that cats like tohide in small places, so the beds areusually placed under the little tableswith a towel hanging over for the kit-ties to hide under.

With over 44 condos and theability to accommodate over 80 cats, safety is of the utmost importance. The facility is equipped with a stateof the art 24-hour security systemand hurricane resistant windows, andabsolutely everything is cleaned andsanitized every day with hospital-ap-proved chemicals that aren’t harmfulto cats. In addition, the doors of the

facility are always locked and nobodygets in or out without all the kittyresidents being accounted for. Dueto the top notch attention to detailand care, Kitty City is even a topchoice among local veterinarians, in-cluding Dr. Mango at All AboutAmore Cat Hospital.

Luxury Feline Hotel at Kitty CityBy Matt Selby

Cindy Flowers founded Kitty Cityover twenty years ago after a personalexperience of not being able to find aplace to board her two cats while onvacation. Technically it’s not that therewasn’t a place, there just wasn’t a placethat provided the level of care Cindywould want for her kitties. Cindy lovesher cats, and like most of us, sees hercats as family. When Cindy returnedhome from her vacation she made thedecision to leave her job as a dentalhygienist and start her very own cats-only boarding facility right here inCarrollwood, which she refers to as a“hotel” for cats. Her small businesswas an instant hit in the communityand quickly became well known as“THE” kitty hotel. Now, over twentyyears later, Cindy’s business still givesher the same joy as day one and herpassion for what she does shinesthrough in everything she does. “I re-ally love what I do and my love andexcitement hasn’t faded in the leastbit,” says Cindy.

Kitty City is more than a board-ing facility; it’s almost like a day spa

for cats and CATS ONLY. No otheranimals have or ever will be boarded atkitty city so your kitty will feel com-fortable. While the owner is away, thecats at Kitty City experience one-on-one attention with Cindy’s friendlyand loving staff, as well as fur brush-ing, ear cleaning, nail trimming, catnip and a plethora of treats all at noextra charge! “Every cat is different soeach day is tailored to what the catswants and needs are. Older cats enjoysleeping longer than younger ones so

by Luna Love, amember of the profes-sional troupe, LeTeaze. Luna fell inlove with burlesqueduring her time livingin Queens, New Yorkand decided to intro-duce her friends to theidea when she moveddown to Tampa.

“We were actuallyhaving a "pamperingday" together in early2010, when it dawnedon me that we couldall explore burlesquetogether... just forkicks. I mentioned itand showed the girls some YouTubevideos, as very few of them had anyidea of what burlesque actually was,”explained Luna. “They loved the idea,so we all decided we'd start havingpractices on a weekly basis; although, initially, we had NO intention to everperform for anyone but us.”

After intensive practices, the groupdecided they did want to experienceperforming in front of a live audience.

“We decided to do a little

"teaser" show, just to briefly showcaseall of us and show off one of ourgroup routines. In December 2010,we performed at a small bar inRiverview, and packed out the place. We were a total hit and got our firsttaste of performance! If we weren'thooked before, we were certainlyhooked after that first show,” she said.

With the success of that perform-ance, the group chose to be a charityperformance troupe, making nothingfrom the performance and donating all

It’s an expression of art as uniqueas the performer – a combination ofdance and old-fashioned tease.

In an age of constant body-sham-ing, Kat Skratch Burlesque rejoices incurves, is proud of their normal, im-perfect, non-stick-thin, voluptuousbodies, costumed in sexy boas, laced-up corsets, fishnets, and stilettos.

And the sold-out, captivated audi-ence during Bitchin’ Burlesque in Sep-tember , a fundraiser for and at TampaPitcher Show, 14416 N Dale MabryHighway, seemed to appreciate these“real,” beautiful women.

Their themed Bitchin’ Burlesqueshow was described on their Facebookpage as “the burlesque and varietyshow that celebrates the power, inde-pendence, allure, and insanity of whatit means to be a woman.”

“We greatly appreciate thisfundraiser. It was a tremendous suc-cess. We had to turn people away atthe door. Bitchin Burlesque raisedover $2,000 to help us offset the hugecost in going digital,” said TampaPitcher Show owner Wayne Valenti,“We do shows like this, improv, com-

edy open mic, and others to help keepour doors open. Despite affordableprices and state-of-the-art digital tech-nology, movie attendance isn’t what itused to be.”

The women of this amateurtroop have careers and families andsome cannot have their faces pho-tographed during their act. Despitethis burlesque being strictly the art ofa risqué tease and not being strippingdown nude, a stigma is still attachedto the artists who choose this profes-sion or hobby.

Most have backgrounds indance, jazz, ballet and gymnastics. But all have discovered a commonbond through the art of the tease – aconfidence in themselves and theirbodies they didn’t have prior to join-ing the troop.

Kat Skratch Burlesque is com-prised of several fabulous women, who come and go as their circum-stances change. For sake of privacy, the current six go by inventive stagenames to mask their real identities:Luna Love, Autumn Storm, GypsyJames, Ginger Slaps, Moxy AnnMayhem, and Roxy Embers.

The amateur troupe was founded

proceeds to their selected organization. “Burlesque changes you - I know

it has changed me. I think I've be-come a more confident person, confi-dent in my abilities to choreograph asong, for example. And the most funthing about performing, for me per-sonally, is the rush that I get before, during and after I perform - it's a bigjumble of anticipation and happiness,”said Ginger.

Love added, “Without man-bash-

ing (we love men!), thisshow celebrates everything itmeans to be a woman... hergrace, beauty, sexuality, kind-ness, strength, independ-ence... and even a bit ofinsanity! Brainstorming forroutine/song ideas for thisshow was so much fun, asthere are endless possibilitiesthat fit this theme!”

Although some maycriticize that burlesque isbelittling to women, for thistroop, it is a form of femaleempowerment, a way to ac-cept, make peace with, andbe comfortable and confi-dent in one’s own skin.

“In KSB, we focus onaspects of theater, includ-ing facial expressions, andin the art of teasing and

building anticipation, not in strip-ping,” said Slaps.

What initially was meant to be afun girl get-together has evolved intoa personal journey for each of KatSkratch Burlesque members.

“It was empowering! Throughburlesque, we could be whoever wewanted to be. We learned to appreci-ate ourselves a bit more and to cele-brate our shortcomings instead of

hiding behind them,” said Love. To do a performance like this re-

quires commitment – weekly practicesand more leading up to a show.

It also takes a creativity andcraftiness. Members often sew theirown costumes.

“Unfortunately, you can't just godown to the corner burlesque storeand buy a polka dot bustle skirt of apair of tiger-striped pasties wheneveryou need them, so you have to learnhow to make costumes yourself,” saidLove.

She warned that although it looksglamourous on the surface, there wasa lot of hard work that went into eachperformance. Additionally, the timeand cost invested in the costumes, music, choreography, hair, andmakeup made burlesque an expensivehobby.

“I would say that everyone isn'taware of what goes on behind thescenes - the long practices, the dressrehearsal, making props, sewing cos-tumes, searching 5 thrift stores in oneday just to find that perfect jacket tocompliment your solo performance, making song lists, picking the order ofthe performances, timing costumechanges in between songs, making fly-ers, handing out flyers aroundtown.....and the list goes on,” said

Slaps. But no matter the time or mone-

tary investment, this group of womenare hooked on the power of bur-lesque.

“We said goodbye to the unrealis-tic notion that "sexy" is the superskinny girl in the movies and TV. Westopped being ashamed of our bodiesand came to realize that a heapingdose of personality can be far sexierthan any airbrushed model in a fashionmagazine.”

And these changes in the way wefelt about ourselves while we were our"burlesque selves" eventually startedmanifesting into our personal lives aswell. We each had developed a newsense of self-confidence and a renewedappetite for living, and we madechanges in our "real" lives accord-ingly,” explained Love.

Burlesque is acting withoutwords. Burlesque is loud and largerthan life. Burlesque is theater, drama, comedy, and circus. Burlesque is theART of the tease... Burlesque is notjust about the destination, it's aboutthe journey!
