The “Hanukkat Habayit,” He-brew for dedication of sacred space, was attended by members of the

Tampa Conservative synagogue as wellas members of the local community.

“It is incredible to think that onlyabout eight months ago we began ourcongregational path toward a shulpremised on two things: connectionwith one another; and welcoming and

valuing each person for who he or sheis, rather than how much they pay indues,” synagogue Board of Trusteespresident Chris Shulman said. “Thesevalues are felt at every Shabbat serviceor Holiday Observance, through thewarm words and inclusive practices ofour Founding Spiritual Leader, Haz-zan Jodi Sered-Lever, through theonegs and Kiddush luncheonsthoughtfully prepared and provided bycongregants, through the warmth offriends gathered together to worship, and through the kind laughter we hearwhen the kids attend religious school.

“These values are also expressedin our adoption of a Voluntary Finan-cial Commitment – the first shul to doso in Tampa Bay – where each personor family gives as they believe they areable to afford.”

At the event, Shulman introducedHillsborough County District 2 Com-missioner Victor Crist, who offered in-spirational remarks and embracedTampa’s newest Conservative Jewishcongregation as part of the vibrant, growing area.

Sered-Lever led a brief but mean-ingful service characteristic of thewarm and inviting environment thathas already drawn over 70 householdsto the shul in under a year.

Board Vice President Susan Mar-

low offeredthe blessingand fulfilledthe mitzvah ofaffixing themezuzah tothe entrance ofthe sanctuary.Afterward, congregantsand guests en-joyed a delicious meal in the atriumwhile socializing.

“This type of environment is ex-actly why we joined. This is a placewhere people give what they can. Peo-ple are here because they want to be;the sense of community is palpable,”said Mekor Shalom member Dr.Amanda Smith, who attended withher husband and two daughters.

Shulman added, “This congrega-tion has answered the call. Through fi-nancial contributions and in-kinddonations of religious items, officeequipment and supplies, beautifulworks of art, and, most of all, congre-gants’ time and services, MekorShalom is thriving.”

As you open the glass and brownmetal door, all the cynicism of adult-hood is wiped away; you have just re-turned to the wonderment ofchildhood. For this generation of chil-dren, it’s like Harry Potter discoveringDiagon Alley in the middle of a quaintMuggle neighborhood.

In the far right corner of anunassuming shopping complex is asecret world filled with vintage cardtricks and modern-day illusions. Theshelves are lined with guides, mem-orabilia and novelty items. This isno ordinary shop, but a specialmeeting place where amateurs andprofessionals, young and young atheart, can purchase tricks and propsand meet monthly to socialize anddiscuss magic.

Since opening its brick andmortar location at 4429 GunnHighway, The Magic Emporium hasbecome a Mecca for magicians lo-cally, throughout the United Statesand around the world.

“I’ve been in the business about10 years,” says founder Gary Barker.“We opened the shop in November2009. Before that we were exclusivelyonline and at magic conventions.”

At the age of 8, Barker had hisfirst introduction to magic when magi-cian and ventriloquist Mark Wade per-formed at his elementary school.

“I bugged my parents to takeme to the library to get a book onmagic and have never looked back,”he explains.

Barker performs at corporateevents, private parties and churches, and does a lot of charity work. Heopened The Magic Emporium to givethe public much more than a retailshop, but the full magic experiencefrom a bygone era.

“I have a passion for magic, but Ihave a passion for the experience thatyou get from a brick and mortar thatyou cannot get online,” says Gary. “Ilove the Internet and technology, butthere is something intrinsically beauti-ful about doing magic and learningface-to-face. You can only get that ex-

perience in a real shop.” From beginners in preschool, el-

ementary and high school to uncon-ventional tattooed twenty-something’s to senior citizens honinga lifetime craft, in his shop Gary hasseen the style evolution of magic, from illusionist David Copperfield tostreet shock magicians like CrissAngel and David Blaine.

Gary says, “I personally believewhat’s good for magic is good for allof us. From the different styles of per-forming, huge illusions to shockmagic, there is a place for all of that.Magic – for most of us in the arts – iskind of a culmination of all art forms –theatre, drama and pantomime, music. It a culmination of all performing artsmelting together as one.”

Gary believes that even today’syouth, with technology at their fin-gertips, still appreciate a good magicperformance.

And longtime magicians RudyHernandez and Dick Johnson “TheOld Pro”, who were meeting at theMagic Emporium for the monthly

Tampa Magic Club, Warren Hamil-ton International Brotherhood ofMagicians (I.B.M.) Ring 175, agreewith Gary.

“I’ve been a magician all of mylife,” says Johnson, who regularly per-forms at holiday shows, especially dur-ing Halloween. “I think if the kids sit

down and pay attention, they are nottoo jaded to appreciate magic. Liveentertainment is still a good thing. Ienjoy what I call apparatus magic –with the birds and a rabbit; I used tohave a girl doing illusions with me.”

Hernandez, who has been per-forming for 40 years, explains, “Thekids today are learning magic onYouTube and away from other magi-cians. When I was learning, the onlyway you could learn was from othermagicians and going to a group likethis and actually having social contact.Magic is secondary to the entertain-ment. Magic is a tool and entertain-ment is the show. It’s good to havethe social interaction.”

“The Masters of Magic”Beginning 7 p.m. on June 1 and

repeating each Sunday through Au-gust 31, the Magic Emporium willpresent “The Masters of Magic.” Forjust $10, families can enjoy anevening of magic and other varietiesof entertainment.

“We will have quality, professionalmagicians coming in, with differentmagicians each week to perform forthis family-friendly event; hopefully itwill spark some interest in the art ofmagic,” says Gary.

Kid’s Club The Magic Emporium also

hosts a Kids Club called the Societyof Young Magicians the second Sat-urday of each month, with itsyoungest regular magician with thestage-name “The Amazing JohnJohn (Humphries) having started atjust 4 years old.

Gary says, “At first I was bit skep-tical about how engaged someone thatyoung could become, but surprisinglyover the last year he has grown, honedhis skills and done a really fabulous jobat learning both the tricks and how topresent them well. It’s exciting to seekids especially that young really getsomething out of this experience.”

AbraCAMPdabraSummer Camp

In addition to a monthly club, young budding magicians, ages 7 toseventeen, can practice their skills inThe Magic Emporium’s summercamp, AbraCAMPdabra on June 23-27, July 21-25 and August 11-15.

“It’s a focused, concentratedcamp centered on magic,” says Gary.“We teach them a wide range ofmagic, performance techniques andshowmanship and we also have a spe-cial day that we teach them balloonsculpting. The camp culminates withan evening show where the childrenperform the magic they learned for

family and friends.”For $150 per week, campers re-

ceive a camp tee shirt, certificate ofcompletion and a magic/balloon kit.

In his five years at his GunnHighway location, Gary has also dis-covered the magic is being utilized bynon-magicians in unique and innova-tive ways. He says, “We get a lot ofeducators who come in and ask formagic they can use to engage theirstudents and use as teaching tools. Wehave several math and science teacherswho come in frequently to get magictricks like optical illusions that theycan use to reinforce what they areteaching in their classrooms.”

Several magic and balloongroups, like I.B.M., Gulfcoast chap-ter of the Fellowship of ChristianMagicians, and the Balloon Jam,comprised of full-time and part-timeentertainers, hobbyists, and new peo-ple simply interested in learningmore about the craft, call the MagicEmporium home for their monthlymeetings and lectures.

“We live in a crazy world and thestresses of life are sometimes heavy,”concludes Gary. “Magic can take youback to that moment of wonder andbelief that you had when you were achild when you had hopes anddreams and really believed they couldcome true. I love that about magic. If I could communicate one thing toCarrollwood it would be that we arethe best-kept secret in Tampa Bay!We love magic and our communityand we’d love to share that momentof wonder.”

The Magic Emporium is lo-cated at 4429 Gunn Highway inTampa. They are open Mon. – Sat.10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more infor-mation on magic classes, lectures, shows, meetings, and camps, pleasecall (813) 265 -9263, visitwww.TheMagicEmporium.net orFacebook.com/MagicEmporium.

Missy’s pas-sion for leading a healthy lifestyle andher full belief in the benefits fromcleansing through colon hydrotherapy, stems from her own personal life expe-riences. When Missy was in her mid-twenties she began feeling tired, achy,worn-down and foggy. After missingout on work from debilitating symp-toms, Missy pursued a mission to find

the reason behind her illness. Shefound that she had developed SystemicYeast Overgrowth called Candida, dueto excess amounts of sugar and yeastand/or overuse of antibiotics, and ac-cording to www.candidaclinic.org,“Systemic Candida overgrowth has be-come a virtual epidemic, affecting mil-lions of people.”

Once Missy realized that sheneeded to take charge of her body, shedid just that; a change from her nor-mal diet to a healthier, more whole-some regimen reduced Missy’sSystemic Candida symptoms by 80%within 8 weeks. Missy says, “Growingup in California, I was always aware ofnatural health and lifestyles, but it was-n’t until I became very sick and healedmany of my personal ailments that Idecided to go back to school. When Iwas able to heal myself I knew that Ireally wanted to teach others.”

At 27, Missy signed up to attendNutrition School in Napa Valley andsoon after, moved to Florida wherewhile working at Whole Foods in theNutrition Department, Missy met her

role model, BrendaWatson, the propri-etor of cleansingproducts calledReNew Life. “Ifound that manypeople were insearch of coloncleanses to ridthemselves of toxinsand heavy metalbuildup,” saysMissy. “FromGMOs to the over-use of antibiotics, tovery little nutrientsin our soil, we arebeing assaulted daily with chemicals ineverything. In fact, according to a re-port by WHO, The World Health Or-ganization, ‘1/4 of Global disease iscaused by environmental toxins.’ OnceI realized this I began searching for myown colon hydrotherapist to furtherdetox my body.” Missy says that afteronly six colonic treatments she wasshocked at how amazing she felt.

“I knew then that I wanted to

pursue becoming a colon hydrothera-pist to help people feel better in thesame way I did,” shares Missy. “Thetruth is our bodies are not designed toendure the daily intrusion of chemicalsingested, from our food to the waterwe drink and bathe in…colonic ther-apy helps rid the body of those excesschemicals and toxins.”

sauna session and the experience waswonderful. My body was relaxed andmy mind found peace; you will lovethe sauna treatment, which allows youto have complete “me” time. Whatmakes the infrared thermal systemunique? Infrared radiant energy re-leases out of panels within the steam-free sauna and penetrate the body’stissues up to two inches deep; you areliterally heated up from the inside. Theenergy output from the sauna is tunedto correspond with our body’s naturalradiant energy and induces 2-3 timesmore sweat output than a traditionalsauna. Missy compares her infrared sys-tem to a “medical sweat,” clearing tox-ins out of the body through the releaseof a heavy sweat session. The saunawill completely relax you and is a greatpurification tool before your colonicsession. After my sauna treatment, myskin glowed for days; the sauna is anexcellent purifier and increases bloodcirculation – what a wonderful gift!During your sauna treatment you willbe in a clean towel, receive water withelectrolytes and once you have com-pletely relaxed and sweat out toxins, you will wrap yourself in a new clean, fresh towel and head to the colonicroom for further cleansing treatment.

Missy says, “We all need to cleanseand be aware of importance of elimina-tion. Here at Westchase Colonics itfeels like coming to an Internal BodyCleansing Spa versus a clinic. I want myguests to feel great when they leavehere…refreshed, energetic, yet relaxedand definitely lighter!” The colon hy-drotherapy session lasts about 45 min-utes and the final 10 to 15 minutes isspent in the bathroom to eliminate anyexcess water as you replenish your sys-tem with a delicious dairy-free, elec-trolyte and probiotic infused beverage.

“Seeing someone transform fromfeeling ill, lethargic and depressed tocomplete vigor, lightness and vitality isvery rewarding,” says Missy. “I under-stand what it feels like before and after ahealthy detox – helping people reachthis healthier, lighter feeling is the rea-son I love, love, love what I do!”

The machine used for your closedsystem colonic treatment is a class twomedical device that utilizes gentle pres-surized water to clear out the colon fromtoxins and buildup. The pressurizedwater works to exercise the colon mus-cles, which also may unravel any twisting

of the colon that may be present and ul-timately help to retrain the bowel. Allfecal matter within the bowel is toxic.Other problems occur when the excessmatter seeps through the colon wall andinto other areas of the body. Colon hy-drotherapy clears out that excess toxicwaste and gives overall improvement tobowel muscles. Three sessions within a10-day time frame are usually needed toclear the bowel completely. Some mayrequire more sessions, due to many yearsof medication use and overall poorhealth that contributes to years of consti-pation. Missy covers every detail of theprogram. She even helps you plan acolon-clogging-free diet. Missy says, Iam going to be 45 this summer and Ifeel much healthier and energetic than inmy 20s, since I’ve been aware of the im-portance of healthy cleansing over thelast 15 years.” Missy detoxes abouttwice a year using the same colonic hy-drotherapy treatment and protocol herpatients receive.

If you are looking to improve youroverall wellbeing, health and energy, youwill be greatly satisfied with the upscalepurifying program at Westchase Colonics.Janet from the Westchase area says, “Iwas nervous at the thought of having acolonic but Missy was so helpful and reas-suring. Deciphering The Code: How To Read Nutrition LabelsLet’s be honest, we have all

stared at nutrition labels blankly try-ing to understand what in the worldis really going on. It can be confus-ing and frustrating, but there aresome easy ways to develop a betterunderstanding. The following tipswill help you crack the code of nutri-tion labels so that you can make edu-cated, health driven choices whilegrocery shopping!

1. Ignore the front of thepackage. Products use phrases like“Heart healthy!” “Fat free!” and“Low sodium!” on the front of thelabel entice you to purchase them, butoften these claims prove to be lessthan accurate when you look at thenutritional information. If you takenothing else away from this article, re-member this number one tip!

2. Start with the serving size. All packaged food labels are requiredto show the serving size of an item. Itmay be in grams, ounces, cups, etc,but it has to be there, and the servingssizes of the package will also vary. Ifyou look on a box of whole grain ce-real versus one of its more sugary

counterparts, you will often find theyuse different servings sizes.

3. Understanding “caloriesfrom fat.” For many of us we glossover the “calories from fat” section ofthe label, but it’s hugely important. For instance, a jar of coconut oilshows it has about 120 calories per ta-blespoon. It also states there are 120calories from fat per serving. Whatdoes that mean? It means oil is 100%fat. On the other hand, a piece ofbread that has 80 calories per slice and5 calories from fat makes it 16% fat.Understanding this difference will goa long way in your journey of choos-ing healthy foods!

4. Look at the “total fat.” Addi-tionally, making sure your foods arelow in saturated fat (no more than 7%of your intake) and trans-fat free is im-portant. According to the USDA, av-erage men and women should get nomore than 20-30% of their caloriesfrom fat, so keep this number in checkto encourage overall, lasting health.

Hidden Fat Alert! Be sure to re-view “fat free” items too. Companiescan label a product “fat free” if it con-

tains less than .5g fat per serving. So insome products, such as cookingsprays, you will see that the servingsize is so small that it can carry the “fatfree” label, when it is really 100% fat, just like liquid oils.

5. Check the sodium. TheUSDA recommends that the publictake in less than 2,400mg of sodiumper day, and in some cases even lessthan 1,500mg. Currently the averageAmerican is taking in over 4,000mg,which is associated with high bloodpressure and other cardiovascular is-sues. By choosing foods with a 1 calo-rie to 1 milligram sodium ratio or less, you can be sure to stay below theserecommended numbers.

6. Read the ingredients. As ageneral rule you probably shouldn’teat something with ingredients youcan’t pronounce. Keeping foods intheir whole, unprocessed form is agreat way to make sure you’re stickingwith a healthy plan.

Be sure to take these tips withyou the next time you’re groceryshopping to check your favorite“health” foods and see: Do they re-

ally fit the health bill when pushcomes to shove?

When we think of health for our-selves we list eating right, exercise, weight control, mental stimulation andregular early detection or well care vis-its with our physician. It really isn’tdifferent creating a plan to keep yourpet healthy. For your pet it is impor-tant to feed the correct type andamount of food and avoid inappropri-ate or excessive treats. Appropriatepreventative care, vaccinations andmedications should be tailored to yourpet’s needs. Pets should have an exer-cise plan that works for their age andbreed and your time constraints. Plan-ning regular visits with your veterinar-ian can help you make the best healthplan to extend the life of your pet.

Choosing a pet food can be moredifficult than you think. There arethousands of commercial pet foodsavailable. Visit our website, plantation-petvet.com, to read about choosing anappropriate pet food. It is importantto read ingredient labels, consult withyour veterinarian and stick with onefood. Animals do best with consis-tency. The vast majority of pets I seewith diarrhea have experienced a re-cent diet change. Even a planned

change in diet should occur very grad-ually over a course of 7days to avoidgastrointestinal upset.

Taking your pet to the veterinar-ian for an “annual” visit can be adaunting task. Owners worry abouttransporting their pet, what will berecommended and what it will cost.Veterinary sevices should be based onyour pets breed, age and lifestyle.Vaccinations especially should bebased on your pet’s daily life. Yourpets “personal” information shouldalso be used to determine the type ofheartworm and flea prevention that isdispensed. Many pets in this area ofFlorida will need a product that in-cludes tick prevention.

Vaccines, especially a complete se-ries for your kitten and puppy, andmonthly heartworm, flea and tick pre-vention medication are the cornerstoneof a healthy pet. Most owners do notrealize that their dog and cat’s monthlyheartworm prevention also protectsthem from intestinal parasites. Intes-tinal parasites like roundworms, hook-worms and whipworms can causediarrhea, weight loss and other less ob-vious signs of illness. Some of these in-testinal parasites are “zoonotic” orcontagious to humans, especially tovery old, very young and immunosup-

Wehave found thesetests and proce-dures can help usprevent or slow theprogression of is-sues like heart, kid-ney and liver disease. When detectedand treated early, these conditions re-spond the most favorably to treatment.

A healthy pet needs exercise, justlike in humans. The most difficult partof exercise, for most people, is makingthe time to incorporate it into ourpet’s daily routine. It helps our dogsand cats with obesity prevention, jointhealth and mental health. You will findthat most dogs love exercise and be-have better when they can get out ofthe house and interact with others.Cats can be given food or treat puz-zles, trained to chase a toy or laserpointer and given cat trees or otherareas to climb and enhance their envi-ronment with vertical challenges.

Your furry companion’s longterm health starts with a once or twiceyearly physical and discussion withyour veterinarian. Vaccines alone arenot the basis of health. You and yourpet require the same type of personal-ized care. Find a veterinarian who willexamine your furry family memberand discuss issues like diet, exercise, and preventative laboratory screeningsand needed dental or surgical proce-dures. Your pet ages much quickerthan you do and recommendationsmay change frequently. You are thekey to keeping your pet healthy be-cause you feed, walk, play, clean upafter and most likely sleep with yourpets on a daily basis.
