Arguably one of the most signifi-cant of the five senses, vision is oftensomething we take for granted, that is,until our eyes no longer work the waythey used to.

As we get older, naturally ourbody begins to age; the eyes are no ex-

ception. At first, impairment in visionmight not seem so noticeable, but astime progresses slowly your vision de-teriorates until one day you find your-self waking up and when you openyour eyes it’s as if you are underwater;everything is blurry and you canbarely see your own reflection.

What a boon for our area, asthey have expanded from three tofourteen employees since then! Andnow, I understand, they are in theprocess of opening a second locationin the Riverview area within the nextfew months to optimize their pres-ence in the southern portions ofHillsborough County as well. By theway, there’s still 3500 square feetavailable in the center of the TrotterTerrace complex should you want topursue your own entrepreneurialdreams and are looking to start asmall business in the area! Talk toJim and Elaine– they are pros!

There are four consultants onstaff who can help you to envision thepossibilities for your home. First, theycan address your specific needs in thewell-appointed showroom and/or sec-ondly, they are poised to assess yourspace on site, taking into account thefollowing criteria: Fashion and style,Heat, Solar, Privacy and Glare control.Elaine quickly noted, “We have a solu-

different vendors. As a result, they areable to offer you great options, pricesand warranties not seen anywhere elsein the industry! Just ask them abouttheir 5-year “No Questions Asked”Warranty Program for their PureVu®and Norman® shutters. You’ll seethat it’s quite impressive.

Here’s the amazing thing, though… The second part of theTrotters’ dream has been undertakenin a big way. They lend their supportto our local Habitat for Humanity bydonating blinds, as well as to Metro-politan Ministries by being a drop offsite for food and toys. Elaine saw myeyes grow bigger while I was takingcopious notes. She then summedthings up rather well by saying,“We’ve been embraced by our localneighborhood and feel it is importantto give back to our community.” Butthat’s just the beginning…

Under the larger umbrella ofBudget Blinds, a division of HomeFranchise Concepts (HFC), they arehelping our returning veterans bypartnering with Homes for OurTroops. They (and other fran-chisees) are donating $1 for everywindow covered, which over a 3-yearperiod, will provide window cover-ings across the country in everyHFOT home. Homes for Our

Troops is a privately funded non-profit organization that builds spe-cially adapted, mortgage-free homesfor the most severely injured Veter-ans who served in Iraq andAfghanistan post 9/11. Most ofthese Veterans are multiple amputees, paraplegic, quadriplegic or have suf-fered severe traumatic brain injury(TBI). The homes built for theseVeterans will help to restore the free-dom and independence that they sac-rificed while serving our nation, thusenabling them to focus on family, re-covery and rebuilding their lives.Wow! There even ways you can per-sonally help, if you are so inclined…just ask and Elaine, Jim or any oftheir staff to fill you in on the details. This initiative follows CorporateBudget Blinds’ existing commitmentto offer veteran-friendly franchise op-

portunities, as well.“Everyone needs a safe haven to

feel comfortable,” Elaine noted.Budget Blinds of Greater Tampa hasthe express desire and the expertise tohelp make that a reality for your homeor business. It’s no wonder that theyhave a steady stream of returning cus-tomers and referrals to delight anew. There are even commercial applica-tions like Burger King, Tijuana Flatsand apartment complexes like CitrusRun, near Sheldon Road) in the mix.

Suffice it to say that the Trotters andtheir staff are equipped to handle allyour window covering needs. Letthem assist you the next time youwant to maximize the possibilitieswithin your home or business, “what-ever the dilemma.” Hope to see youthere soon!

You don’t need to ask the em-ployees of Great Clips if they like whatthey do for a living; the proof is foundon the faces of their satisfied cus-tomers. “It’s quick. They do a greatjob and it’s not that expensive. Theymake me look good,” quipped cus-tomer Alan Bell, “And I’m really notgiving them much to work with.”

It’s this type of friendly banterand customer relationship that sepa-rates Great Clips from the rest of thewallet-friendly hair cutting shops.

Ally Phlipot and Sarah Kahn, styl-ists at the Palms of Carrollwood loca-tion, located on the corner of Fletcherand North Dale Mabry, agreed that‘meeting and talking to new people’was what they enjoyed best abouttheir job.

“It’s never the same – you’re al-ways meeting someone new,” addedstylist Lindsey Willis.

A longtime resident of Tampa, owner Lea Orchard got in the groundfloor in Tampa Bay of a now nation-

wide franchise and opened her firstGreat Clips location in 2001. She wasthe first to bring the Great Clips fran-chise to her community.

It wasn’t always easy. Over adecade ago, Great Clips did not yethave any local renowned name recog-nition or the 60 Tampa Bay locations,3,700 nationwide locations in the U.Sand Canada that it does today.

“At first, people thought we soldhair clips,” said Lea.

Orchard recently opened herfourth and newest location on the cor-ner of State Road 54 and Livingstonnext to Panera Bread in Central Pasco.

“What is great about this businessis it is a small business; I have theGreat Clips name, but it’s my businessand I have to build it up,” added Lea.

Despite county signage regula-tions making it difficult to advertisethe location of this Great Clips shop,in its 8 months since opening, thisState Road 54 and Livingston locationhas almost as much volume as her flag-ship store in Carrollwood.

Lea is proud that she is a hundred

Great Clips is CutAbove Rest

percent hands-on with her business.Whether it’s frequent visits to each ofher four Great Clips locations, hiringher staff, or mastering the art ofguerilla marketing, this single motherof four balances business and familywith determination and grace.

“I won’t keep anybody that Iwouldn’t let cut my hair,” she said, asshe explained the process for selectingthe talented stylists that have becomeher second family in her four shops.

The stylists stay up to date on thenewest trends in hair, including the“pompadour” and prohibition undercut for men and inverted and texturedbobs, tousled beach waves, and bangs

for the ladies.“We keep notes in the computer

of every person’s haircut every timethey come in,” said Lea. “We check thenotes. Consultation is huge. We askthem if ‘this is what we did last time. What do you want to do today?’ ”

If a haircut request is out of theordinary or is something that haseveryone scratching their heads, Lea ishappy to allow technology to come tothe rescue. The stylists can pull outtheir SmartPhones, find the perfectphoto online to confirm with the cus-tomer the style they are seeking beforeputting a scissor or electric razor totheir head.

Technology has also helped re-duce any wait time at the shop. Guestscan check-in on their computers orSmartPhones and add their name tothe wait list, ensuring little to no waitwhen they arrive.

“Our online check-in is amaz-ing,” said Lea. “You can look onlineand see what the wait is at a particularstore. If there’s a 20-minute wait, yousign in right then and 20 minutes lateryou come in. No matter who came inhere after you signed in online, youare in front of them. You get calledfirst before the people who didn’tcheck in online.”

Being a member of several net-working groups like CABA, where shewas 2012 president, Lea said one ofthe best things about being involvedin the day-to-day operations is thatpeople talk to her about their experi-ences in her shops.

She said, “I have a lot of – basi-cally secret shoppers – but I don’tsend them; they just come.”

She says that her shops are family-oriented. Seventy percent of her cus-

tomers are men and families. Thewomen tend to come after their hus-band or child has had a haircut. Whilethey can spend hundreds of dollars oncoloring, the women have discoveredthe benefit of saving money by com-ing to Great Clips for an outstanding$14 haircut.

Lea’s Great Clips stores also pro-vide a $2 discount to military, fire-fighters and police.

“We do what we do best – hair-

cuts,” said Lea. “Everybody needs ahaircut and we offer affordable qualityhaircuts that can fit into your sched-ule. Great Clips is near and dear to myheart and I’m trying to build it to be afamily business. I’d like my kids totake them over some day. I want tobuild the business and then have it bea legacy.”

Lea Orchard offers four con-venient Great Clips locations:

The Tampa Kids Market gives kidsages 8–17 the opportunity to learncommerce in an open market setting.Kids’ are creative, energetic, and manyof them are ready to start their ownbusinesses before fear of failure everhas the chance to quell their entrepre-neurial spirit. Recently, I wrote a busi-ness feature for RN & Associates forthe East Lake Area Neighborhood News& Lifestyles, a sister publication to Car-rollwood Area Neighborhood News &Lifestyles. The thing that is intriguingabout RN & Associates is that thesetwo Financial Advisors, Philip Nelsonand Ram Ramcharran, focus on teach-ing the children and young adults ofwealthy clients how to manage theirinherited wealth (we should all be sofortunate, I know!), but more thanthat, they encourage them to createtheir own wealth. With families of theirown, they feel that kids can learn im-portant business concepts early. I en-joyed a story Ram shared of his

9-year-old son planning a lemonadestand and puzzling over finding “aprice point that will be acceptable tothe general public.” Kids don’t have tobe born rich to learn these conceptsthough, and right here in Tampa Bay,we have the Tampa Kids Market, where young minds are figuring outprice points, signage, inventory costsand much more!

The Tampa Kids Market was cre-ated by a couple of “mompreneurs”who realized that there are many tal-ented, young “kidpreneurs” in theTampa Bay area who would benefit byhaving a place where they could selltheir wares and learn to manage theirown small businesses. Tampa Baymoms and business partners AndreaBowe and Regina Hord are the own-ers of FIT4MOM Tampa Bay (aMommy & Me fitness franchise) whostarted the Tampa Kids Market, whichthey also manage. The Tampa KidsMarket provides a place where kidsages 8 to 17 can create, sell and learnto manage their small business in a

farmers’ market setting. It featuresboth kid vendors and businesses thatsell family-related products and/orprovide children’s services, as well ascommunity resources and free activi-ties for kids.

The Tampa Kids Market rotatesat several of the Tampa Bay Markets

locations in Tampa Bay, includingthe North Tampa Market in Carroll-wood, the Seminole Heights SundayMorning Market and the Fresh Mar-ket at Hyde Park Village. Please visitTampaKidsMarket.com and click onthe “Upcoming Events” tab to viewthe calendar.

It’s all about girl power and sister-hood for the Citrus Park Rockies, thefirst ever all girls t-ball team at CitrusPark. Making history, this all girlsteam has been working hard to provethat their team has what it takes tocompete with co-ed and all-boysteams in the league.

Ranging in age from 5 – 7 yearsold, these girls sure have heart andprove that girls can play ball too! Itwas the vision of mother Danielle Diazand other parents in the area thatbrought this team to life. Wanting togive their daughters the same bondingexperience that many of their sons gotto experience by playing on an all-boysteam, these parents banded togetherto start an all-girls team. “We startedthe Citrus Park Rockies with thehopes of having these girls grow to-gether as a team throughout the years, giving them the opportunity to formthat camaraderie that all- boys teamsget to experience,” says Danielle.

“We want our daughters to growup and be well-rounded and know alldifferent types of sports and not just

ballet and gymnastics. Being a part ofa team is a completely different experi-ence,” adds one mom.

For many of these girls, this is theirfirst time playing a team sport, but youwould never be able to tell – the waythey work together as a team is really

impressive and they have already beganto show such immense progress.

On the other hand, there are quitea few girls on the team who have beenaround the ball field their entire livesand have already played a few seasonson a coed team. They have graciously

welcomed the new girls and madethem feel right at home on the field.“Half of the girls have older brothers sothey are accustomed to being at thepark and many have played on othercoed teams,” says Danielle. “Now, it’stheir turn to shine!”

After talking to many of the girls,it was clear to see that they were reallyhappy with the opportunity. Com-ments ranged from “It’s really fun”and “It’s better because we get to playwith all girls and no boys,” to “We getto meet new friends and play withfriends from school.”

Joining a team is a great way foryoung girls to build their confidence, and when it comes to the ColoradoRockies they are all about positive rein-forcement and proving that girls arejust as good as boys when it comes toplaying ball! “The coaches are so goodwith them,” says one mom. “The rein-forcement and positivity is amazing. They are all about encouragement.”

Danielle adds, “It’s important toteach these girls from a young age theimportance of teamwork and for themto get out there and play against theboys to help build their confidence

to refer their friends and family. Theyhave taken care of three generations offamily members in their office.

"My patients trust that I will tellthem the truth," says Dr. Redmon. "Ienjoy talking with my patients and dis-cussing with them what they want toaccomplish. Many patients don't knowwhat to expect. Some have an ideabased upon what they have read onthe internet. I get to know my patientsand help to point them in the direc-tion that is the best option for them. Iwork with them to achieve the best so-lution to their problem; the one thatwill give the best result. One reasonwe do not use computer imaging isbecause what you can show on a com-puter screen is not necessarily repro-ducible in the operating room. Everypatient is different and needs a cus-tomized approach. I am very thor-ough at discussing what is going tohappen and what to expect at surgery.

With their own unique touch, and many times sharing their own per-sonal experiences, the staff at Dr. Red-mon's office is very personable andcaring and will welcome you in and

make you feel at ease. "We have a lotof patients who come back for newprocedures because they feel comfort-able," says Kathy. "Our office is verywarm and our patients enjoy the at-mosphere. Our patients love thestaff!"

Patient J.S. writes, "If you'relooking for a great plastic surgeon, Dr.Redmon, without a doubt, should be

your first choice. I have had two pro-cedures - a facelift and an abdomino-plasty - and both had fabulous results.Dr. Redmon is professional, yetfriendly and caring. I had to go forcardiac clearance prior to my surgery, and the cardiologist indicated that Dr.Redmon had 'some of the best hands'in his field. His staff is also veryfriendly and professional. Deb did per-

manent eyeliner for me, and I havebeen very pleased. I give Dr. Redmonand his staff an A+."

When it comes to plastic surgery,Dr. Redmon has made a name forhimself. One of the youngest gradu-ates to receive his certification in plas-tic surgery, Dr. Redmon's work ethicand dedication to excellence is per-fectly complemented by his precisionand passion for plastic surgery. Histhirst for knowledge and excellencehas remained strong to this day, whichis why it will come as no surprise thatfor over 8 years he has been namedone of the top plastic surgeons byTampa Bay Metro Magazine. If youare having plastic surgery, especiallyon your face, you want to have aBoard Certified Plastic Surgeon, which is different than someoneBoard Certified in another area who isdoing Cosmetic Surgery.

Dr. Redmon’s passion for plasticsurgery is the driving force behindhis practice and the reason why afterover three decades he is just as ex-cited to be in the operating room.“Operating is fun,” he says. “Every-day is different and each patient isunique. I have experience and I amvery well qualified. I tailor the proce-dure to the individual needs of each
