Un destino náutico de primera clase

A first-class nautical destination

Esta publicación de la Consejería de Turismo expresa el firme deseo del Gobierno de Canarias de reforzar entre el público general el conocimiento y reconocimiento de la extensa oferta de productos y servicios náuticos de las Islas Canarias, las competiciones y torneos de distintas disciplinas depor-tivas de prestigio internacional que se celebran en las Islas, así como de los deportistas canarios que participan en las principales competiciones a nivel nacional e internacional. La revista lleva el nombre del sello Islas Canarias Water Sports Experience cuyo objetivo es promocionar y difundir todas las ac-tividades que se pueden practicar en las Islas, conforme a la estrategia de promoción diseñada para dar a conocer la excepcionalidad del Archipiélago como destino náutico. Dentro de esta estrategia de promoción se encuadra el programa de patrocinios de la Consejería de Turismo en eventos y campeo-natos náuticos de relevancia internacional que se celebran en sus costas. En paralelo a los centros de perfeccionamiento, la existencia de centros de iniciación y variados establecimientos dedicados a los deportes de mar, unido a las facilidades de clubes y federaciones, convierten a las Islas Canarias en el escenario ideal para fundirse con el mar en una experiencia única.

Tourism Council answers the Government of the Canary Islands’ wish to reinforce among the general public the knowledge and recognition of the extensive offer of nautical products and services available in the Canary Islands, the competitions and tournaments of different sport disciplines of international prestige which take place in the Islands, as well as the Canarian sportsmen and sportswomen who participate in the main national and international competi-tions. The magazine is named after the Canary Islands Water Sports Experience brand whose aim is to promote and spread all the activities that can be carried out in the islands, following the strategy designed to promote the exceptional qualities of the Archipelago as a nautical desti-nation. Within this promotion strategy we find the sponsorship program of the Tourism Council for nautical events and championships of international relevance which take place in its coasts. Together with improvement centers, the existence of centers for beginners and an array of companies dedicated to water sport activities, as well as the facilities offered. This publication of the y clubs and federations, make the Canary Islands the ideal scenario to unite with the sea in an unique experience.

las siete Islas, considerando a la Islas Canarias Water Sports Scude-ria como eje integrador y central de esta comunicación y actividad común. Ésta es una apuesta decidida del Gobierno de Canarias para impulsar la presencia de las Islas Canarias en las

grandes competiciones, apoyan-do a los equipos y deportistas dedicados a los deportes náu-ticos vinculados con sus Islas. La Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia tiene la vocación de convertirse en un referente tan-gible e integrador que permita transmitir al público, tanto cana-rio como nacional e internacio-nal, la riqueza que contienen las siete islas.Entre todos estos de-portes, la Consejería de Turismo promocionará en 2010 un total de 23 eventos deportivos. La riqueza de este destino turístico y las posibili-dades que ofrece la diversidad de las condiciones náu-ticas, así como las óptimas condiciones climatológicas para la práctica de los deportes náuticos, son de sobra conocidas por los profesionales de la vela, el surf, el windsurf, el buceo, etc. Pese a ello, esta oferta no cuen-ta con el reconocimiento que se merece entre el gran público, y ésta es la razón que ha llevado al Gobierno de Canarias a poner en marcha Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia.

Esta iniciativa trata de agru-par a todos los activos deporti-vos y humanos de primer orden con los que cuentan las Islas, en-carnados en los deportistas ca-narios de élite de todas las dis-ciplinas náuticas. Este proyecto de la Consejería de Turismo contempla también coordinar la comunicación de todas las acti-vidades náuticas que existen en

Canary Islands Water Sports Scuderia was born with the object of reinforcing the general public’s knowledge and recognition of the effort and trajec-tory of the Canarian sportsmen and sportswomen who participate in the main national and inter-national competitions, as well as competitions of international relevance which are held in the Islands’ waters. The main objective is to promote the unequalled tourism offer of the Canary Islands among other elite destinations for the practice of water sports.

The wealth of this tourism destination and the possibilities offered by its diverse nautical condi-tions, as well as optimum weather conditions for the practice of wtaer sports, are well known by sailing, windsurfing, diving and other professionals. Even so, this offer does not hold the recognition it deserves among the great public, so for this reason the Government of the Canary Islands has started the Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia.

This initiative tries to unite all the first-class sports and human assets that the island has to offer, embodied by the Canarian elite sportsmen and

sportswomen in all the water sports categories. This project of the Tourism Council also contemplates coordinating the commu-nication of all the nautical activities which take place in the seven islands, with Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia as the central axis that will integrate all the communication and com-mon activity.

The Government of the Canary Islands has decided to support this initiative to promote the presence of the Canary Islands in big competitions, supporting those team, sportsmen and sportswomen dedicated to nautical sports linked to their islands. Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia wants to become a tangible and integrating reference

which will transmit to the public, local, national or international, the wealth of the seven islands of the Canarian Archipelago.

Among all these sports, in 2010, the Tourism Council will promote a total of 23 sport events. This first-class offer and the sponsorships will be supported by this pioneer action, which will aid the Canary Islands in attracting tourism interested in water related activities.

Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia is a multi-category project which unites, under a single identity and like values, all the sport assets of the Canary islands: Sport sailing teams and events; windsurfers, surfers, kitesurfers and competitions of all these categories; divers and diving meets; deep-sea fishing events; and basic sport (beginner’s clinics).

Emocionante temporada

Entre los meses de abril y noviembre son múltiples las competiciones y torneos que ponen a las Islas Canarias en el punto de

mira de los aficionados a los deportes de mar. Con un calendario ambicioso, el público puede disfrutar de numerosos eventos de alta calidad y que cuentan con el patrocinio del Gobierno de Canarias, a través de la Consejería de Turismo.

Algunos torneos de pesca ya han tenido lu-gar, inaugurando la nueva temporada. Entre los madrugadores está el V Open Mundial de Pesca Deportiva Surf Casting y Embarcación Fondea-da, que se celebró en Los Llanos de Aridane (La Palma), y que tuvo como brillante campeón a Ju-lio Castro Rodríguez. En la primera quincena de junio y organizada por Marina La Gomera, tiene lugar el X Campeonato de Pesca de Altura Isla

de La Gomera, una iniciativa que congrega a de-cenas de embarcaciones de todo el mundo.

En las mismas fechas, en la isla de Lanza-rote se celebrará la segunda edición de Rubi-cón Fishing Jigging Record, una competición de pesca creada para intentar batir el récord IGFA (International Game Fish Association). La tem-porada de 2010 contiene otros cuatro torneos de pesca que tienen el patrocinio del Gobierno de Canarias. Se trata de la VIII Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup, y el Trofeo de Pesca de Altura Puer-to Calero, ambos en Lanzarote; además de los torneos de pesca de altura de Pasito Blanco y Puerto Rico, en Gran Canaria.

A thrilling season Between the month of April and the beginning of November, numerous competitions and tourna-ments take place in various points of the Archipe-lago which place the Canary Islands in the point of view of water sport lovers. With and ambitious calendar, the public can enjoy a great selection of high quality events sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Tourism Council.

Some fishing tournaments have already taken place, inaugurating the new season, among the early birds is the V World Sport Fishing Champion-ship Surf Casting and Anchored Boat, which took place in the Llanos de Aridane (La Palma), whose brilliant champion was Julio Castro Rodríguez in both the categories. During the first half of July and organized by Marina La Gomera, the X Deep-Sea Fishing Championship Isla de La Gomera takes place, an event that attracts numerous ships from around the world.

On the same dates, but in the island of Lanzarote, the second edition of the Rubicón Fishing Jigging Record, will take place. It is a fishing competition created to beat the IGFA (International Game Fish Association) record, which was a hit last year in its first edition. There are other fishing tournaments in the 2010 season -see calendar- sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands. These will take place in July and August and, as in previous edi-tions, a great number of participants is expected. These are the VIII Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup, and the Puerto Calero Deep Sea Fishing Tournament, both in Lanzarote; there are also deep sea fishing tournaments in Pasito Blanco and Puerto Rico, in Gran Canaria.

In the following months, windsurfing will turn the Archipelago, birthplace of many professionals of this sport, in the center of attention of millions of enthusiasts from around the world. The World Windsurfing Championship returns to the Canary Islands with three PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) events. These international circuit events which will take place in Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), Sotavento (Fuerteventura) and Costa Teguise (Lanzarote), with their thrilling speed, spec-tacular free styles and world class races, guarantee a spectacular show in the water for the audience, and of course the participants, to enjoy.

The world championship will also take place in Fuerteventura, which will host the kiteboarding PKRA (Professional Kiteboard Riders Association) event, where those present will be able to enjoy watching the most radical free- stylers.

The good temperatures and winds are also a lure for surf lovers, who travel from around the world to the Canary islands practically throughout the year

de aficionados de todo el mundo. El Campeo-nato del Mundo de Windsurf regresa a las Islas Canarias con la celebración de tres pruebas de la PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association). Las pruebas del circuito internacional que ten-drán lugar en Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), Sotavento (Fuerteventura) y Costa Teguise (Lan-zarote), con velocidades emocionantes, estilos libres espectaculares y carreras de categoría mundial, garantizan un magnífico espectáculo sobre el mar para el disfrute de los espectado-res y, como no, de los participantes.

También en Fuerteventura se celebrará el campeonato del mundo con la prueba de ki-teboarding de la PKRA (Professional Kiteboard Riders Association) y los espectadores tendrán la ocasión de ver a los profesionales del estilo libre más radicales.

Las buenas temperaturas y los vientos son también un reclamo para los amantes del surf, que tendrá esta temporada varias citas ineludi-bles y de un alto nivel, entre ellas el Campeona-to Mundial de Surf Islas Canarias Ocean Earth & Pro que se celebrará en noviembre, en El Confi-tal, en la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Los amantes del surf tendrán otras dos citas sur-feras relevantes, esta vez en aguas de Lanzarote: Islas Canarias Santa Pro y Santa Pro Junior.

La vela, alma máter de los deportes náu-ticos en las Islas Canarias será la gran protago-nista en septiembre y octubre, en Gran Canaria, Tenerife y Lanzarote con cuatro pruebas de un alto nivel de calidad y profesionalidad en sus diferentes clases: ORC 670, ORC 570, Regata y Crucero. El Trofeo S.A.R Príncipe de Asturias, que se disputará en la bahía de la ciudad de Las Palmas, abrirá de nuevo el circuito canario de regatas, a la que le seguirán el Trofeo S.A.R Infanta Cristina (Tenerife) y el Trofeo César Manrique (Lanzarote), que coincidirá con la ce-lebración de la prestigiosa Prueba del Circuito Mundial Regata RC 44.

La temporada de fotografía submarina la abrió en abril el Open Foto Sub Sardina, en Gáldar (Gran Canaria). El alto poder de convo-catoria de los certámenes de fotografía sub-marina que se celebran en distintos puntos del Archipiélago, confirman la extraordinaria rique-za de los fondos marinos de las Islas Canarias, que atraen cada año a los mejores fotógrafos submarinos del mundo. La isla por excelencia para la práctica del submarinismo es El Hierro, que este año celebrará la XIV edición del Open Foto Sub Isla de El Hierro. La élite de la fotogra-fía submarina se dará cita una vez más en esta competición.

to enjoy the waves. This season there are several high-level, must-see events, among them the Ocean Earth Pro World Surf Championship, which will take place in November. The ninth edition of the WQS will take place in El Confital, in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In the 2010 calendar, surf lovers will still have two more important dates in the waters of Lanzarote: Canary Islands Santa Pro and Santa Pro Junior.

Sailing, alma matter of all water sports in the Canary Islands, will take center court during the months of September and October, in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote with four high level events in its different categories: ORC 670, ORC 570, Regatta and Cruise. The S.A.R Príncipe de Asturias Cup, which will be held in the Las Palmas city bay, will open the Canarian regatta circuit, followed by the S.A.R Infanta Cristina Cup (Tenerife) and the César Manrique Cup (Lanzarote), which will coincide with the prestigious World Regatta Circuit Event RC 44.

In April, the Open Foto Sub Sardina, in Gáldar (Gran Canaria) opened the underwater photography sea-son. The high number of participants attracted to the various underwater photography competitions held in different spots of the Archipelago, confirm the extraordinary richness of the sea beds of the Canary Islands, which attract every year the best underwater photographers of the world. The island par excellence for the practice of diving is El Hierro, which this year hosts XIV edition of the Open Foto Sub Isla de El Hierro. The top underwater photogra-phers will meet once more in this competition.

Bajan de un barco para subirse a otro y sobra entusiasmo en cada una de las competi-ciones donde se ponen a prueba. En pocos años, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero ha ido tomando posiciones en el competitivo mundo de la vela, y así lo confirma su triunfo como campeón del Trofeo de Portugal, primera prueba del Circuito Audi MedCup, en la GP42 Series que se celebró en mayo en aguas de Cascáis (Portugal). .

El Trofeo Portugal supuso el estreno GP 42 en una temporada que se prevé intensa y en la que el equipo canario combinará por segunda temporada consecutiva su participación en los dos circuitos de referencia en la vela mundial: Audi MedCup y RC44 Championship Tour. El equipo inició la temporada de 2010 en febrero, en aguas de Dubai, con su partici-pación en el Al Maktoum Sailing Trophy, en el apartado de match race, seguida de la prueba de la RC 44 Austria Cup, y a continuación Portugal, donde consiguió revalidar su triunfo del pasado año.

El equipo del armador lanzaroteño José Antonio Calero, sólido y con un palmarés im-portantísimo, forma parte de la Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia. Un equipo ganador que este año sigue apostando por una tripulación totalmente canaria, de campeones olímpicos, de patrones exitosos, y de grandes conocedores de los secretos del mar y del viento.

“Los valores profesionales de la vela, la importancia del trabajo en equipo y al mismo tiempo los valores náuticos que ofrecen las Islas Canarias para la práctica de este deporte”, son algunas ideas que destaca el project manager, Daniel Calero, quien se muestra muy satisfecho con el equipo.

Islas Canarias Puerto Calero tiene como principal patrocinador a la Consejería de Tu-rismo del Gobierno de Canarias la cual se ha propuesto promover al Archipiélago canario como uno de los destinos náuticos por excelencia del mundo occidental. Puerto Calero, el segundo de sus sponsors principales, es una marina deportiva de Lanzarote, que durante sus 25 años de historia se ha volcado en adaptarse a las novedades de última generación del sector y apuesta constantemente por eventos náuticos de alto nivel.

They get off one boat to hop on to another, and there is an excess of enthusiasm in each of the competitions where they put themselves to the test. In just a few years, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero has been climbing positions in the competitive world of sailing, as confirmed by them winning the Portugal Trophy, the first event of the Audi MedCup Circuit, in the GP42 Series which took place in May in the waters of Cascáis (Portugal).

The Portugal Trophy was the GP 42 debut in a sea-son which we predict will be intense and in which the Canarian team will combine for the second season in a row their participation in both the circuits of reference for world sailing: Audi MedCup and RC44 Championship Tour. The team started the2010 season in February, in Dubai waters, participating in the Al Maktoum Sailing Trophy, in the match race category, followed by the RC 44 Austria Cup, and followed by Portugal, where they repeated their win of last year.

The team owned by José Antonio Calero from Lanzarote is solid and with an impressive list of tiles, and is part of the Canary Islands Water Sports Scuderia. A winning team which one more year believes in a totally Canarian crew, with Olympic champions, successful skippers, and those privy to the secrets of the sea and the wind.

“The professional values of sailing, the importance of teamwork and at the same time the nautical con-ditions offered by the Canary Islands for practicing this sport”, are some of the ideas highlighted by project manager, Daniel Calero, who is very satis-fied with the whole team.

The Islas Canarias Puerto Calero boat main sponsor is the Tourism Council of the Government of the Canary Islands, whose aim is to promote the Canarian Archipelago as the nautical destination par excellence of the western world. Acaban de regresar de Portugal, ¿cómo ha sido la experiencia?Ha sido muy emocionante, tuvimos muchas complica-ciones para llegar a tiempo a la primera prueba del campeonato. Por diferentes motivos, el barco llegó a Portugal el mismo día en que empezaba la regata. Si a esto le añadimos los retrasos en los aeropuertos a causa de la nube de ceniza, la verdad es que pensábamos que no llegaríamos al primer día de la competición. Pero no fue así, eran tantas las ganas que teníamos de participar que llegamos a tiempo, ganamos las dos primeras pruebas y acabamos la competición con bastantes puntos de ventaja sobre el segundo clasificado. ¿tenían esperanzas de reva-lidar su triunfo? Salimos a la prueba con muchos deseos de ganar, pero desconocíamos cómo estaban nuestros rivales. Todos los equipos han hecho mejoras en sus barcos y cambios en las tripulaciones, sin embargo en ninguna otra regata hemos tenido tanta distancia con el segundo clasificado como en este campeonato.

¿qué supone ser el equipo ganador? Anímicamente es un paso

¿Necesita el equipo un líder que entusiasme al grupo?Es fundamental que haya alguien que dirija los pasos del equipo, en este caso tenemos a la familia Calero, tanto el armador José Antonio Calero, como a sus dos hijos, José Juan y Daniel, que son las personas que mueven los

you have just returned from Portugal, what has the experience been like?It has been thrilling; we had several setbacks to reach on time for the first event of the champions-hip. For various reasons, the boat arrived in Portu-gal on the same day the regatta was starting. If to this we add the delays at the airports due to the ash cloud, we really thought we would not arrive for the first day of the compe-tition. But this was not the case, we won the first two events, the team was very concentrated, we won two more events and finished the competition with a lead of several points over the ship in second place.

did you have hopes of winning again? We went out to sea wan-ting to win, but we were unaware of the situation of our rivals. Every team has improved their boats and has made changes in their crew, nevertheless we have never had so much distance with the second place as in this competition.

What does being the win-ning team mean? It’s a very important step for our morale, the team is very motivated and it has given us a lot of confidence.

does the team need a leader to motivate the group?It is fundamental to have someone who directs the team’s steps; in this case we have the Calero family, José Antonio Calero, the owner, as well as his two sons, José Juan and Da-niel, the people who pull the strings of the team. My role is mainly carried out in the water, organizing, coordinating maneuvers

and having everything under control, that is my job.

tell me about your tra-jectory In the beginning, the team started having little experience; neverthe-less, the Calero family believed in this crew, made up of young and prepared people who had limitted experience in this type of boats. In 2007, the Islas Canarias Puerto Calero project was born, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands, and little by little we have been taking positions with the help of the sponsorship by the Tourism Council. That is why winning the MedCup two years in a row is recognition of the hard work carried out for many years, proving this way that we are on the same level as any team. With hard work and friendship we have achieved some-thing important for this project.

What would you highlight of sailing as a sport? Our contact with nature, there is pretty much only sea and wind when we sail. Nowadays there are many facilities offered by the federations and clubs so that any adult or child can sail. The sensation you get when you sail through the water thanks to the wind is one not many sports can offer. The Islands have all the conditions so that anyone can practice this sport. And for the professionals, the Canary Islands give us the chance of having a training base in the same place where we live in and whe-re we can train throughout the year.

Las sensaciones que produce el desplazarse por efecto del viento en el mar es algo que en muy pocos deportes se puede dar. En las Islas tene-mos todas las condiciones necesarias, y a los profesio-nales nos permite disponer de una base de entrena-miento en la que podemos prepararnos durante todo el año.

En el Archipiélago se está desarrollando una nueva estrategia para promocionar las Is-las como destino preferente del turismo náu-tico en Europa, con el objetivo de fomentar, mejorar y consolidar la oferta de actividades de ocio de las Islas Canarias de forma soste-nible, y posicionarlas como destino turístico preferente. The offer of the Canary Islands is exceptional; there isn’t any other destination in Europe which can boast optimum conditions throughout the year for the practice of water sports.

A new strategy is being carried out in the Archipela-go to promote the Islands as the preferred destina-tion for nautical tourism in Europe, with the object of fostering, improving and consolidating the leisure activities offer of the Canary Islands in a sustainable manner and position them as a preferential tourism destination. Through this initiative, the Government of the Canary Islands also wants to attract tourists passionate about water sports, and elite sportsmen and women interested in establishing their sport preparation and recovery centers in the Archipelago.

The aim of the new marketing strategy adopted by the Tourism Council is to place the Islands as a preferential destination as opposed to other tourist locations, both for the unique characteristics of the Archipelago (climate and natural conditions) as well as for the excellence of the services offered. This has led to the creation of the Canariy Islands Water Sports Experience brand, which certifies the quality, professionalism and security of the products and services offered by every establishment, within the nautical sector, which has joined this initiative.

This brand is, therefore, a guarantee of quality, which allows all type of establishments, as well as munici-palities, to join and benefit from a series of advan-tages. This action answers to the need to specialize and differentiate ourselves from other competitors, in a tourism sector in which the competition is greater every day. Las excelentes condiciones de mar y viento, más de treinta puertos deporti-vos y empresas expertas en chárter náu-

tico convierten a las Islas Canarias en el des-tino ideal para los amantes de la navegación. Las principales agencias náuticas de Europa consideran las Islas Canarias como uno de los lugares del mundo más privilegiados para el desarrollo del turismo náutico, y así lo con-firma Ecc Yacht Chárter, una empresa canaria con amplia experiencia en este sector y adscrita al sello Islas Canarias Water Sports Experience.

Esta entidad empre-sarial se dedica desde hace quince años al alquiler de barcos de motor y recreo, y a la impartición de cur-sos de vela a través de su academia náutica. El usuario de estos servicios tiene un claro perfil: Aunque también hay jóve-nes, en general se trata de hombres de entre 50 y 70 años de edad con mucha experiencia en navegación, de origen alemán y austriaco, fundamentalmen-te, seguidos de ingleses, franceses y polacos. Con respecto a la academia náu-tica, la empresa indica que al principio la demanda era muy baja pero poco a poco ha ido creciendo, porque tam-bién ha crecido el interés por obtener la titulación que permite dirigir un barco de recreo. “Suele ser gente muy joven, y el curso con mayor número de inscritos es el PER (Patrón de Embarca-ción de Recreo)”.

With headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and bases in the main ports of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, this company has been, for the last 15 years, renting out motor and recreation vessels, and offering sailing courses through its nautical academy. As to the nautical academy, the company explains that at the beginning the demand was

very low but it has been growing little by little, as the interest for obtaining the license to operate a recreational boat has also grown. “It’s usually very young people, who or come from navigating families or come just for pleasure, to have the opportunity of hiring a boat and enjoying the experience”. The cour-se with the highest number of inscriptions is the PER (Recreational Boat Skipper), probably because it is the easiest of all the courses taught at the academy. It lasts three months, includes practice and theory and allows for operating ships of up to 41 feet in length (almost 12 meters).

En noviembre, El Confital volverá a ser escena-

rio del campeonato de surf y parada para los

participantes que aspiran a ganar puntos en las

pruebas clasificatorias del mundial de surf masculino

WQS. Este evento deportivo se celebrará este año en-

tre los días 3 y 9 bajo la denominación Islas Canarias

Ocean & Earth Pro, teniendo como principales patroci-

nadores al Gobierno de Canarias, a través de la Conse-

jería de Turismo, y a Ocean Earth.

El campeonato de surf de El Confital, que este

año cumple su novena edición, ha sido posible gracias

al empeño y tesón del equipo liderado por Federico

García, surfista como no podía ser de otra manera, y

Dun Nunder. En el año 2000, el tour manager de la fe-

deración internacional, sabedor del potencial de Gran

Canaria, le animó a presentar una propuesta para ce-

lebrar las prueba clasificatoria del mundial en la Isla.

“Empezamos a trabajar, a la marca australiana le gustó

la idea y presentamos la propuesta en 2001”, indica Fe-

derico García.

La primera edición se celebró con el apoyo pre-

supuestario de Dun Nunder y Ocean Earth, y el patro-

cinio del Centro Comercial Las Arenas. “No tocamos

organismos públicos, lo hicimos con financiación

propia porque el surfing era conocido pero no tenía

el reconocimiento de hoy en día”. Por entonces, la ini-

ciativa fue objeto de muchas miradas críticas “porque

se cuestionó si teníamos capacidad para organizar un

evento deportivo de estas características en Gran Ca-

naria”, a excepción del Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de

Gran Canaria, que consideró la iniciativa “una apuesta

importante”, aclara.

Con un presupuesto aproximado de 40.000 euros

y un premio por valor de 10.000 dólares, se celebró la

primera edición en el Muro de Lloret, y aunque debían

seguir el manual de la ASP no tenían muy claro a qué

se enfrentaban. Prueba de ello es que “no teníamos

baños químicos, no acreditábamos a la gente, no ha-

bía zonas perimetrales para los competidores…en fin

habían muchas carencias, pero las hemos superado to-

das”. Con todas estas circunstancias y falta de apoyo,

el campeonato se celebró con la participación de ocho

deportistas y la categoría de una estrella. “No teníamos

experiencia pero superamos la prueba, demostramos

nuestra capacidad de organización, y la

federación nos permitió después subir

de categoría”.

De esta manera, el campeonato

de surf de El Confital ha ido escalando

posiciones a lo largo de su trayectoria

y cuenta con el respaldo popular y el

apoyo del mundo del surf. “A día de hoy

todos aquellos detractores de enton-

ces nos dan palmaditas en la espalda y

nos animan a seguir adelante”, comen-

ta Federico García, quien destaca la im-

portancia de esta competición depor-

tiva. “Tenemos unas condiciones muy

buenas, la ola de la bahía de El Confital

es muy especial, en una cancha natu-

ral excepcional y con una climatología

que nos favorece. Estos factores, más

los ocho años que tenemos de trayec-

toria, hacen que esta prueba merezca

el máximo prestigio”.

Como ha venido ocurriendo en

las últimas ediciones, el campeonato

se retransmitirá vía on line para todo el

mundo. El año pasado, aficionados de

80 países pudieron seguir de cerca la

prueba. “Hay que tener en cuenta que

Canarias, después de Hawai e Indone-

sia, es un lugar importante para el mun-

do del surf. Las Islas son el mejor lugar

de Europa para surfear”, recalca García.

y un premio de 120.000 dólares en la

categoría de cinco estrellas. “Sí pue-

do adelantar que Jonathan González,

nuestro mayor exponente, por supues-

to que estará”. Este profesional obtuvo

el año pasado el primer puesto en la

Movistar Ocean & Earth Pro y se procla-

mó hace nueve años campeón de esta

cita deportiva.

In November, El Confital will once again be the host of the surf championship and a stop for those participants who aspire to win points in the qualifying events of the world male surf champion-ship WQS. This sport event takes place this year between the 3rd and the 9th and is known as Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro, with the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Tourism Council, and Ocean Earth as main sponsors.

The El Confital surf championship, which celebrates its ninth edition this year, has been possible thanks to the determination and effort of the team lead by

Federico García, a surfer - of course-, and Dun Nunder. In the year 2000, the tour manger of the international federation, who knew the potential of Gran Canaria, encouraged him to present a proposal to hold the world championship qualifying event on the island. “We started working, the Australian brand liked the idea and we put in out offer in 2001”, explains García.

The first edition was held with the help of Dun Nunder and Ocean Earth towards the budget, and the sponsorship of the Las Arenas Mall. “We did not approach public organizations, we financed everything ourselves because surfing was known but it did not have the recognition it has nowadays”. In those days, the idea was eyed critically “our capacity to organize a sporting event of these characteristics in Gran Canaria was questioned”, except for the City Council of Gran Canaria, who considered the proposal “an important endeavour”, he clarifies.

With an approximate budget of 40,000 Euros and a prize of 10,000 dollars, the first edition was held in el Muro de Lloret, and although they had to follow

the ASP manual, they weren’t very sure of what they were up against. Proof of that is that we didn’t have chemical baths, we didn’t accredit the people, there weren’t perimeter areas for the contestants…well, there were lot of things lacking, but we have overcome them all”. With all these circumstances and the lack of support, the championship took place with 8 participants and a one star category. “We didn’t have any experience but we passed the test, we proved our organizing skills, and the fede-ration allowed us then to increase our category”.

This way the El Confital surf championship has been climbing positions throughout the years with the backing of the public and the support of the world of surf. “Nowadays all those detractors pat our backs and encourage us to continue”, explains Federico García, who highlights the importance of this sport competition. “We have excellent con-ditions, the waves of the El Confital bay are very special, it is an exceptional natural court and our climate is an advantage. All these factors, together with our eight years of experience, make this event worthy of the highest prestige”.

As in the last editions, the championship will be broadcast worldwide on-line. Last year, the event could be followed closely by enthusiasts from 80 countries. “You have to take into account that the Canary Islands, after Hawaii and Indonesia, are an important place for the world of surf. The Islands are the best place in Europe for surfing” stresses García.

The organizer doesn’t want to venture into telling us the names of the participants in this five star ca-tegory event in which points and a 120,000 dollars are at stake. “I can tell you that Jonathan Gonzá-lez, our biggest representative will definitely be present”. This professional obtained the first place in the Movistar Ocean & Earth Pro last year and was the winner of this event nine years ago.

En las Islas Canarias son numerosos los lugares por descubrir a través de excursiones y rutas turísticas, un lugar donde se puede vivir la me-

La ruta marítima que proponemos en estas pá-ginas transcurre a lo largo de la costa del sureste de la isla de Fuerteventura, entre Morro Jable y Gran Ta-rajal. Se embarca en el puerto de Morro Jable, al sur de la Isla, hacia la punta de Jandía donde está el faro del mismo nombre. Según se parte del puerto, tene-mos frente a nosotros una costa de arenas blancas y justo encima el macizo montañoso de la península de

Jandía. Esta península desde el punto de vista biológico, geológico e incluso histórico ha sido considerada una isla dentro de Fuerteventura.

La península alcanza la mayor al-tura de la isla con el pico de La Zarza con 807 metros sobre el nivel del mar. La cima del macizo es el punto donde se concentra buena parte de su bio-diversidad. Una gran mayoría de los endemismos botánicos y de fauna de Fuerteventura se encuentran en esta zona, y una buena parte de la penín-sula está dentro del Parque Natural de Jandía, con 14.318 hectáreas. En este macizo, encontramos un paisaje más acantilado, con playas hermosas y alargadas como la de Cofete, con varios kilómetros de longitud y un mar más bravo.

The Canary Islands have many places to discover through excursions and tourist routes, it is a place where you can live the best fusion between diver-sity and the ideal conditions for practicing open air activities, where visitors find themselves in the perfect surroundings for carrying out their favorite activities. Among the wide range of possibilities offered by the Canary Islands for practicing water related activities, are maritime excursions, which allow the visitor to discover magical places where volcanoes create unique scenarios and experiences.

The maritime route we propose in these pages moves along the south-east coast of the island of Fuerteventura, between Morro Jable and Gran Tarajal. You embark in the Morro Jable port, in the south of the Island, towards the punta de Jandia where we find the lighthouse with the same name. As we leave the port, we have in front of us a white-sand covered coast and right on top the massif of the Jandia Peninsula. This Peninsula has been considered an island within Fuerteventura from the biological, geological and even historic point of view.

The Peninsula holds the highest point of the island with the pico de La Zarza at 807 meters above sea level. The peak of the massif is the spot where a great part of its biodiversity is concentrated. A great part of the endemic botanical species and fauna of Fuerteventura are located in this area, and a great part of the peninsula is situated inside the Jandia National Park, of 14,318 hectares. In this massif observe cliffs, with beautiful and long beaches such as the Cofete, with several kilometers and rough sea.

In the east side, directly in front of us, the sea hardly brings waves to the beaches, and right on top of them there are a few tourist resorts where visitors can enjoy heavenly natural and maritime surroundings. Then we pass by the southernmost point of the island known Punta del Jable where we find the Morro Jable Lighthouse. The word jable comes from the Norman period of Bethen-court, and derives from the French word sable, which means sand.

From our point of view towards the massif, we observe the ravines formed in other periods when the island’s climate was more humid, like Butiondo,

En la cara este, la que tenemos frente a nosotros, las playas tienen un mar casi sin oleaje, y justo encima de ellas se encuentran algunos complejos turísticos donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar de un entorno natural y marino paradisíaco. Pasamos por el pun-to más al sur de la isla denominado Punta del Jable donde aparece el Faro de Morro Jable. La palabra jable procede de la época normanda de Bethencourt, y deri-va del término francés sable, que significa arena.

Desde nuestro punto de vista hacia el macizo, se abren los barrancos formados por otras épocas, cuan-do la isla tenía un clima más húmedo, como Butiondo, Esquinzo o Los Canarios entre otros. En esta costa, el aporte de jable ha formado una laguna de agua marina de poca profundidad separada del mar abierto por una franja de arena. Seguimos nuestro recorrido por la cos-ta y dejamos atrás Costa Calma y el Itsmo de La Pared, que es la frontera natural con el resto de Fuerteventu-ra. Cuentan las crónicas, que en la época de los majos un muro que cruzaba el itsmo dividía dos reinos que gobernaban la isla; al sur, en la Península de Jandía, el rey Guize y al norte el rey Ayoze. Hoy en día se conser-van trozos de ese muro que dividía los dos territorios.

Continuamos la navegación fren-te a una costa con numerosas playas, al-gunas con núcleos de población como La Lajita, Tarajalejo y Gran Tarajal. En esta costa encontramos también Punta Paloma, donde el aspecto del acanti-lado se asemeja a una tarta con capas de nata y chocolate. Estos colores se deben a la erosión marina que deja al descubierto una sucesión de coladas de basaltos y traquibasaltos. El color blanco es fruto de la corrosión marina que reacciona con ciertos materiales volcánicos dando lugar a carbonatos, arcillas y sales de este color.

En Gran Tarajal terminaremos nuestro paseo marítimo pero antes de-bemos navegar hacia el acantilado de la Entallada donde se encuentra el Faro del mismo nombre. Después de esta maravillosa travesía por la costa de Fuerteventura, nuestro viaje termina en el puerto de Gran Tarajal.

We continue our trip around the coast and leave behind us Costa Calma and the Isthmus of La Pared, the natural border with the rest of Fuerteventura. According to the chronicles, in the Majos period, a wall that crossed the isthmus divided two kingdoms that ruled the island; in the south, in the Jandia Peninsula, King Guize and in the north King Ayose. Nowadays there are pieces of that wall that divided both territories.

We continue sailing by a coast with many beaches, some with population such as La Lajita, Tarajalejo and Gran Tarajal. In this coast we also find Punta Paloma, where the Cliff looks like a cream and chocolate layered cake. These colours are due to the maritime erosion which uncovered a succession of flows of basalts and trachybasalts. The white colour is due to the marine corrosion which reacts with certain volcanic materials which produce carbonates, clays and salts in this colour.

We finish our maritime excursion in Gran Tarajal but before we must sail towards the la Entallada cliff with the lighthouse of the same name. After this wonderful trip, our journey ends at the Gran Tarajal port.
