Brethren, As Freemasons we know that the most widely accepted definition of our fraternity in a succinct sentence can be proffered as: a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. We know too, that freemasonry is not a religion, but an institution based on religious principles. Remember, we took an oath upon the sacred book and we professed our belief in a supreme being. Wasn’t our country founded on religious freedoms and the belief in God? Doesn’t the phrase “Masons - Keeping the Promise of America” direct our thoughts to the role that God played in every aspect of our nation’s beginnings - from oaths of office and pledges, even to our coinage. Remember too, what our founding fathers have said about their relationship with God in respect to our country and what many past presidents have also invoked with relationship to their office. Enough said about this as my intent is not to pontificate about religion or God, but to provide a preface to a symbol and practice which many of us are familiar

Knowing the extent to which we utilize symbols in our fraternity, let us consider the “hand” as a symbol of prayer that can be helpful to our fraternity, our nation, and to us.

When you look at your hand or when you fold your hands, the thumb is nearest you. We like to pray for those closest to us - our loved ones. But let us also pray for our Blue or home Lodges. They are the foundation upon which all else in freemasonry depends.

Our index finger is considered the “pointer.” Remember to pray for those who teach us and our children. But let us also pray for our masonic instructors and mentors. These are the ones giving us our masonic education, knowledge, and perseverance.

The next finger is the middle or tallest. We are reminded to pray for those in authority, our leaders. But let us also pray for our masonic leaders - locally, state, and national. Our presiding officers need our support and prayers.

Our ring finger is usually the weakest. Our fraternity teaches us to care for others and to think of charity in all that we do. We need to pray for those in our society, but let us also pray for our sick brothers and sisters throughout the fraternity.

Lastly we see our little finger. Here we are reminded of our smallness in relation to God’s greatness and the greatness of the world. Finally, we need to pray for our needs so that we can continue to be the “good and better men” of the world’s oldest and greatest fraternity.

Remember brethren, this is the year of our 150 years of Caldwell Consistory. Watch for this and other communications regarding the anniversary banquet and other celebrations. Remember our regular meetings and reunions. Most importantly, remember to let us know if we can be of any assistance to you or your family. Hope to see many of you in the coming months. God Bless America, Ill. Brad L. Oman 33°

The Solemn Ceremonial Feast Of The Paschal Lamb

SUNDAY, APRIL 2ND

3:00 PM at Caldwell Consistory

In keeping with ancient custom, and in accordance with the Constitutions of the Su-preme Council, each Chapter of Rose Croix should observe the Feast of the Paschal Lamb by an appropriate ceremony

Chapters of Rose Croix observe this beautiful and symbolic celebration of the Feast of the Paschal Lamb as a memorial service, honoring our Brethren who have passed to their eternal reward during the preceding years. In spirit, we seem to sense their presence at the Mystic Banquet as we seek to strengthen the ties of brotherly love which bind our hearts in holy remembrance.

We humbly remember the brethren who have passed in the last year, and may their eter-nal reward grant them the peace and serenity they truly deserve.

There will be refreshments served at the conclusion of the ceremony in the banquet hall.

If you have never seen this ceremony, we firmly encourage you to join us on the 2nd . This event is open to the public and please feel free to bring anyone interested in attend-ing.

150TH ANNIVERSARY BANQUET

One hundred and fifty years is a very long time. Most businesses and organizations don’t remain in existence for nearly this long, but our Scottish Rite Valley has passed this test of time. To celebrate this milestone, we are having a grand banquet on Saturday, May 6th. As always, the banquet will follow our Spring Reunion which takes place Thursday, May 4th to Saturday, May 6, 2017. Saturday will begin with a lunch served at 11:30 AM. It will consist of sandwiches and light lunch fare. At 1:00 PM the ladies will be taken via bus to Berwick for a tour of the Jackson Mansion.

The Jackson Mansion and Carriage House is a historic home and carriage house located at Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The mansion was built in 1877, and is three stories, with basement, surfaced with Vermont stone in a Second Empire / Italianate-style. The front facade features a three-story central tower with a mansard roof and pedimented portico supported by Doric order columns. The carriage house is a two-story, hipped roof building faced with Vermont stone. If time permits, we will also drive by the Wise potato chip plant, and the factory that produced the Stuart tank during World War 2.

Back at the Consistory, we will be conferring the 20th Degree (George Washington) at 1:00 PM, the 22nd Degree (singing lumber-jacks) at 2:15 PM and the 32nd Degree at 3:30 PM. The Degree work should wrap up around 5:00, in time to meet the ladies who have returned from their trip. At 5:30 PM appetizers will be served in the dining room. They will consist of a vegetable tray with dip, fruit tray with dip, cheese and cracker tray, spinach and artichoke rangoon, sesame chicken, and pineapple kabob.

Dinner will be at 6:00 PM and will consist of a tossed salad with ranch and balsamic dressings, white dinner rolls, entrée duet with parmesan crusted chicken and pot roasted beef with twice baked potato and baby glazed carrots. Drinks will include water and coffee. Dessert will consist of a pineapple square, brownie, and ricotta cookie per plate. For vegetarians, there is an option of eggplant rollatini and stand-ard starch and vegetable. There will also be a cash bar offering beer, wine, and mixed drinks for those wishing to enjoy some libation during the dinner and time afterward.

After dinner, we will have remarks from our distinguished guests. The Valley of Bloomsburg is honored to have in its attendance for our banquet a host of Masonic dignitaries. The list of dignitaries includes Illustrious Brother Raymond Dietz 33°, Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Most Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania and Masonic Jurisdiction Thereunto Be-longing and his officers accompanying him. We also welcome Illustrious Brother John William McNaugh-ton 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Northern Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite Freemasons. Accompany-ing Commander McNaughton will be Illustrious Brother David Glattley 33°, who will succeed Illustrious Brother McNaughton as leader of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction upon his retirement in August 2017. We will also be welcoming Illustrious Brother Thomas Sturgeon 33°, RWPGM, who is serving as the Scot-tish Rite Deputy for Pennsylvania. He will be accompanied by our own Illustrious Robert Dluge 33° RWPGM, Deputy’s Representative for the Valley of Bloomsburg. Other dignitaries that will be in attendance will be Ill Russel Baker 33°, Past Deputy for Pennsylvania, and Ill. George Nakonetschny, Active member of Supreme Council for Pennsylvania. There will also be other dignitaries present who are not yet registered to attend. Service awards for 50,60,65,and 70 years of service in Scottish Rite Masonry will also be awarded on this evening. Since parking is an issue, parking will be available at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds. A shuttle will be con-tinually running to transport members, visitors, and guests to the Consistory. Signs will be posted at the Fair-grounds as to where to park, etc. The cost for the banquet is $40.00. Reservations need to be received at the Valley office no later than Fri-day, April 15th. A registration form for both the banquet and ladies program is included as a separate insert included with this mailing. We also are putting together a commemorative program book for this anniversary. In it will be included a history of the Valley of Bloomsburg. We will also be selling advertising for inside the program. A form for that is also included separately in this mailing. And last, but not least. Let’s go out there and gets lots of candidates for our 150th anniversary class. A lofty goal is 150 new members this year. Wouldn’t that be a fantastic testament to the future of our Valley? A petition is also included separately with this issue.

The Valley of Bloomsburg is fielding a team to participate in the third annual Dodgeball for Dys-lexia tournament sponsored by Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of Demolay.

The event takes place on Saturday, May 13th, starting at 1:00 pm at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd, Manheim, Pa., 17545

Members of our team will be soliciting sponsorships right up until the day of the tournament. Please help us by donating to the cause, and thereby continuing to support the learning center right here in our Valley.

There will be a trophy for most money raised, and we’d appreciate your help in bringing that tro-phy home to Bloomsburg. I think we all know that the old guys aren't going to win any trophies for our athletic prowess competing against teenagers, so this is the only hope we’ve got.

If you are inclined to donate a few bucks to sponsor our team, please contact any officer of the Val-ley. There will also be donation jars conveniently located around the building during the Spring Re-union as well.

VALLEY OF BLOOMSBURG CLAM BAKE SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 2017 1:00 PM - ?

With his help, and the help of his committee, we are pleased to announce that the first annual Valley of Bloomsburg Clam Bake will be held on Sat. June 11 from 1:00 to ?. The menu will be as follows:

VALLEY OF BLOOMSBURG SPEAKERS CLUB

At our monthly meetings at the Valley, I have noticed that we have some excellent speakers. From Dave Reichart speaking on the promise of Freemasonry to Larry Surkin on concealed carry permts, we are fortunate to have such an array of fine speakers. For those of you who don’t attend these meetings, you are missing some great speakers. We have been doing lodge visitations with programs on Scottish Rite for quite a few years, and it has helped us in getting new members. But, you can only provide the same program for so long before it gets old. So, here is the plan: The Valley of Bloomsburg is putting together a Speakers Club. We are looking for volunteers willing to speak at Blue Lodges. They will be representing the Valley of Bloomsburg. Out plan is to create a catalog to give to incoming Worshipful Masters so they can use these programs in their year in the East. If you are interested in being one of our speakers, please email me at [email protected] and I will add you to our list. Speakers do not have to speak on Masonic sub-jects. We are looking for a wide range of topics to be able to offer. Thank you in advance for your support. Ill. Robert Thomas 33° MSA

WHAT ABOUT OTHER FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS?

Part 2 In the last article, we gave a little syn-opsis of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Continuing in the series, we will ex-plore the Loyal Order of Moose. The Loyal Order of Moose was found-ed in 1888 by Dr. John Henry Wilson in Louis-ville, Kentucky. Initially, Dr. Wilson, along with a small group of men, were only interest-ed in creating an opportunity for men to gather socially through a series of men’s social clubs that would be like the Elks, but run like the Masonic fraternity. Subsequently, Lodges were instituted in Cincinnati, St. Louis, and several small towns in Indiana. Before the end of the 1800’s, Dr. Wilson grew unhappy and left this struggling order. The several Indiana Lodges kept the Moose alive until 1906, when John J. Davis became the 247th member and quickly realized that the Order had the potential to become a haven of protection and security for its mostly working class membership. By 1912, Davis grew the fraternity from 247 members to over 500,000 members in over 1,000 Lodges. Around this time, Davis and the others instated plans for a centrally located facility

that would become a home, school, and voca-tional training center for the children of de-ceased members. Consequently, the end of 1912 saw the purchase of over 1,000 acres of land jus west of Chicago - an old farm that re-ceived the name Mooseheart. By 1920 the stu-dent population reached over 1,000. During the 1920’s Davis’ continued with the realization for the need to do some-thing for the fraternity’s elderly membership. The year 1922 saw the birth of Florida Moose-haven with the purchase of 26 acres of land south of Jacksonville. It has since grown to a 63 acre campus providing a home and health care to over 400 residents. As to the name, Moose, the fraternity explains: “He takes only what he needs, noth-ing more...yet for his size and strength he lives in peace with other creatures. He uses his size and power not to dominate, but to protect, not to spoil, but to preserve…” Clearly, the Loyal Order of Moose is a great and enduring fraternity - a tribute to the principles of our nation. Consider the four U.S. presidents that became members: Har-ding, both Roosevelts, and Truman. In our next issue: The Odd Fellows
