BLOOMSBURG HEAD COACH: In each of his two seasons as head coach, Paul Darragh has guided the Huskies to a PSAC East title and an appearance in the NCAA Playoffs. He boasts a 21-5 overall record at Bloomsburg and was tabbed the AFCA Super Region One Coach of the Year in 2014 after leading the program to the regional championship game for the first time since 2008. Prior to being appointed head coach, Darragh served 16 years (1997-2012) as the defensive coordinator with the Huskies under longtime head coach Danny Hale.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Last year, Bloomsburg opened the season with 10-straight wins before falling in the PSAC Championship and NCAA Super Region One Championship. The Huskies traditionally boast one of the top rushing offenses in the country, but have to replace over 2,000 yards and nearly 30 touchdowns from last season. In the season-opener, Bloomsburg was limited to only 86 rushing yards - their lowest rushing total since 2011. Junior Lawrence Elliot, Jr., a two-time All-PSAC East return specialist, and true freshman Alex Gooden combined for 14 carries and 51 yards in the loss against Stonehill. Senior Tim Kelly returns as one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the PSAC. He has totaled over 2,300 yards of offense in each of the last two seasons and passed for more than 50 career touchdowns. Bloomsburg featured one of the top defenses in the country last year, leading NCAA Division II with a staggering 43 takeaways while allowing only 15.4 points/game. Senior defensive back Donovan Morris led the team with five interceptions last season and is the team’s top returning tackler with 64 stops. On special teams, Elliot led the PSAC and ranked sixth in the nation with 15.9 yards/punt return, while junior Will Wagner returns for his third year as the punter with a career average of 38.6 yards/punt.

AGAINST THE EAST: Since 2004, Cal U holds a combined 26-9 record against PSAC East opponents with more than half of the losses coming against Bloomsburg (2-5). Six of the last seven contests between the two programs have been decided by seven points or fewer, including two games in the NCAA Playoffs (2008, 2010). The Vulcans have lost the last two meetings against Bloomsburg at Adamson Stadium with their last home win in the series coming in Week 3 of the 2007 season (31-13).

SCRATCH THAT: Reversing back to previous policy, all league-scheduled crossover games (Week 2, Week 3) this season will not be reflected in the PSAC divisional standings. The league adopted a rule last year that counted all conference-mandated crossover games towards league records.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Vulcans were picked to finish fourth in the preseason PSAC West poll after tying for third place in the divisional standings in each of the last three seasons. Cal U had earned at least a share of the top spot in the preseason divisional poll every year from 2005-12. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg was picked to finish first in the PSAC East after appearing in the league title game in each of the last two seasons.

QUICK STRIKE: Cal U scored touchdowns on drives of three plays or less four times last week at Virginia State. On the game’s opening play, senior quarterback James Harris connected with senior wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 50-yard touchdown. Harris later found junior wide receiver Garry Brown for touchdowns of 90 yards (two plays) and 87 yards (three plays). Midway through the second quarter, the Vulcans scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown after the drive started with a 56-yard pass from Harris to Scott.

STATISTICAL COMPARISON

CALVULCANS

2015 Cal U Football Game Notes www.calvulcans.com

DOUBLE CENTURY: Junior Garry Brown and senior Kowan Scott both registered 100-yard receiving games last week at Virginia State. The duo has now eclipsed the century mark in the same game three times in the last nine games after the Vulcans went nearly two years without accomplishing the feat. Brown has posted six 100-yard games in his career (11 starts), while Scott has reached 100 receiving yards in a game five times. In addition, Brown is the first player in school history with multiple 200-yard games (two) in a career.

RACK ‘EM UP: Senior quarterback James Harris opened the season with 387 passing yards and four touchdowns – all over 30 yards – on 12-of-14 attempts in the win at Virginia State. He averaged over 27 yards per attempt and registered his third-straight game, and fifth career, with at least 300 passing yards. Harris, who has totaled over 2,000 passing yards and 19 touchdowns over the last six games, already boasts three of the top-10 single-game passing marks in school history while having made just 17 career starts.

NFL PICK UP: A trio of former Cal U All-Americans enter Week 1 of the NFL season signed with NFL franchises. Offensive lineman Eric Kush was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday and was then claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following day. Former defensive back Rontez Miles made the initial 53-man roster for the New York Jets before being cut and signed back to their practice squad. Fellow defensive back Dewey McDonald was cut by the Indianapolis Cuts and resigned to their practice squad.

MR. TAKEAWAY: Junior defensive back Jordan Bowman continues to force takeaways, as he recorded his seventh career interception in 14 starts last week at Virginia State. A preseason All-American, he has already tallied the most interceptions since All-American Rontez Miles posted 12 interceptions over 42 career starts. Bowman also has recovered a pair of fumbles in his career and scored touchdowns on a blocked punt and fumble return.

NEW RB TANDEM: The Vulcans have utilized multiple running backs in recent years and the latest duo gained their first extensive NCAA experience last week. Sophomore John Franklin III led the team with 53 rushing yards on 12 attempts with one touchdown after entering the season with only six career attempts. Redshirt sophomore Nate Goldsmith totaled 45 rushing yards on 12 carries in his first action since playing at Erie Community College. The last year Cal U featured a player with at least 200 carries was in 2011, also the last 1,000-yard rusher.

IN BUNCHES: Cal U finished with 476 yards of total offense last week on just 46 plays for a staggering 10.3 yards per play. The Vulcans hadn’t averaged double-digit yards per play in a game since amassing 757 yards of total offense on 72 plays in an 88-12 victory at Mansfield during the 2005 campaign. Cal U eclipsed 500 yards of total offense in a game four times last year with a season-high 660 yards on 78 plays in a 56-34 win at Shippensburg.

GROUNDED: The Vulcans enter the weekend having held seven of their last eight opponents to under 100 rushing yards. Cal U limited Virginia State to only 70 rushing yards on 37 attempts last week after ranking fifth in the country last season in rushing defense. Bloomsburg looks to avoid being held to under 100 rushing yards in consecutive games for the first time in recent years. One of the nation’s top rushing offenses each year, the Huskies have averaged over 200 rushing yards/game in all but three seasons since 1999.

ETTRICK, Va. – Quarterback James Harris passed for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns and wide receiver Garry Brown totaled almost 250 all-purpose yards and two scores, as the Vulcans posted a 35-16 victory in the season-opener at Virginia State on Saturday afternoon. Harris finished with 387 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 12-of-14 attempts. He helped the Vulcans jump out to a 28-9 lead after passing for 299 yards and three scores in the first half. Brown posted 203 yards and two touchdowns on just four receptions against the Trojans. He totaled a staggering 177 yards on his touchdown receptions and added a 40-yard return on the game’s opening kickoff. The Vulcans raced out to a 7-0 lead on the game’s opening play from scrimmage when Harris connected with wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 50-yard touchdown. Virginia State failed to convert a fourth down on the ensuing drive before Brown scored on a 90-yard touchdown reception. Cal U stretched the lead to 21-0 when Harris found Brown for an 87-yard touchdown on the initial play of the second quarter. The Trojans then mounted an 80-yard scoring drive before the Vulcans responded with a three-yard touchdown score by running back John Franklin III. Defensive lineman Tyler Haddock finished with five tackles, 3.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks, while fellow defensive lineman Jawan Turner added five stops and 2.0 TFL. A trio of players collected four tackles and eight different players registered at least 1.0 TFL.
