BTEC Level 3 National DiplomaMusic TechnologyMusic Technology is a subject with many transferable skills and here at St John Rigby College, we have numerous links with other institutions such as the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester University, York University, Edge Hill University, Birmingham Conservatoire, Salford University and BIMM to name a few.

Introduction

Music Technology is a creative and hands on approach to music covering everything from studio recording to contemporary composition.

You will develop skills that will enable you to write, record, produce and market your own music whilst getting an appreciation and understanding of the software and equipment that enable you to do so.

You will be given the opportunity to start building a professional portfolio of work that you can use to attract future clients and employers.

Specific course entry requirements

Either:+ GCSE Music (minimum grade 4)+ Grade 5 in an instrument+ Grade 5 in music theory+ Related experience of music inside/ outside of school+ By audition

What will I study?

You will cover a range of units including Acoustics for Musicians, Audio Engineering, Music and Sound for the Moving Image, Music Production, Live Sound and Sequencing to name a few.

You will look at the recording studio, create original music and look at sound design for moving image including Foley artistry.

There are many opportunities to work with local community partners and professionals in the industry.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is undertaken in a variety of practical ways with some written assignments. These will all be completed in our purpose built facilities.

Where will this course lead me?

Due to the transferable skills that music offers, it is a highly regarded course for Higher Education institutions. Students progress to study Music and Music Technology at university and many are invited to apply for a conservatoire for further study of this specialist subject. Through our Maestro Programme, we work in partnership with many prestigious universities as well as the Royal Northern College of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire.

Students have gone on to study at Salford, Derby, Huddersfield, Edge Hill, Bath, York, London School of Music Theatre, Guildford and Birmingham.
