    Joe Wilhite,

    Editor-in-Chief

As publisher of this magazine, I have never written an article from the couch. I see no reason to start now. Since wewrite articles about things o the corner, I decided to write this article from o the couch. It gives me a dierentperspective with an opportunity to look at Boyd Street and the changes that have been made over the past sixmonths. Oh sure, weve added BoydStreet.com, tness articles, fashion articles, a new sports writer, a ton of newadvertisers and a presence on Facebook and Twitter, but I still feel we can do so much more. For me, not only is the4th of July a celebration of our nations independence, its also a time to celebrate your victories from the rst half ofthe year. And that is exactly what we are going to do at Boyd Street, CELEBRATE!!! The sta at Boyd Street deservesit. They have done a great job!!! But watch out, as soon as the festivities are over, we have many great new thingsplanned. Just to brag a little, starting with this edition, we will be writing an ongoing Greek article. But the mostexciting, when OU football games start, Boyd Street is sponsoring and bringing in a Jumbo-Tron TV for all the homefootball games. Campus Corners own Boomer Village. So get ready, its going to be a great second half!!!!

Until next time, have a safe 4th of July,

    We have a NEW look!

    >>Not the hedge monster again!

    Web 3.0 ByAJLansdale

    >> An indie darling from the PC gaming world, Minecraft has nally made its way to a console.

This seems like an odd choice, considering the games creative nature of building things and

avoiding Creepers (the things that look like hedge monsters) lends itself to modifying the game

extensively, which isnt easily done on consoles. To the extent it can be, though, this is actually a

pretty solid port. Its open-ended nature makes the game incredibly fun for those who like building

things in this form, but the game world on the 360 version is much smaller, which can hinder your

creativity. If youve got a decent computer, Id recommend getting the classic (free) version on PC

and seeing how you like it rst, but this is denitely worth a look.

    Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

    >> Im a bit biased, but Ivealways loved Star Wars. Thechance to re-enact the iconictrench run from A New Hopestill gives me goosebumps. While thats just a bonus levelin this game, Rogue Squadronwas one of the great ones frommy grade school days. Forits time and with the help ofthe Expansion Pak, it brought

console gaming to a pointgraphically that hadnt beenseen yet. It wasnt the rst

Star Wars space combat game(X-Wing and Tie Fighter cameout in the DOS era on PC),but this broke through to themainstream in a time where

Star Wars was coming back, with the originals rereleasedin theaters a couple of yearsago and Episode Icoming outa few months later. Its alsoavailable on PC, but play it ifyou can. Its not a trap, if thathelps any.

    >>Well said, Spiderman, well said.

Gratuitous Picture of Gratuitous PicturesTumblr is the photo-blog site for fandoms across the web and all sorts of esoteric images. Heres an overview as well as some ofmy favorite blogs on the site.umblr is probably one of the mostinteresting blog sites on the Internet. Whilemany blog sites might include big walls oftext and the like, Tumblr is best described

as a photoblog, a site where the visuals are king.Images, macros, art, design and even fashion tendto rule the site.

Where Facebook is being overrun by parentswho are reconnecting with people from theiryouth that they only vaguely remember and(regrettably) getting access to their kids onlinelives, Tumblr still maintains a very youngdemographic: half of Tumblr users are under theage of 25. With over 46 million tumblogs, theresno shortage of entertainment to be had.

A big draw for Tumblr is its numerous fandoms. Most shows and a decent amount of celebrities have

a large followingon Tumblr. Inparticular, thepeople I follow arequite enamoredwith British TV likeDoctor Who and

Sherlock. Thosecertainly arent theonly such fandoms,

    though. Other

large fanbases that dwell on Tumblr include TheSimpsons,Star Trek,Avatar,Harry Potter,Game ofThrones and even Glee. *shudders*

Fortunately for basement dwellers like myself, gaming is also well-represented on Tumblr. Gameslike Minecraft, thePokmon andZelda series seemto be the best represented, but Mario and a bigchunk of the retro/nostalgia community havetheir own stakes on the site.

If youre a fan of scenery porn and the like youcan certainly nd that too. Many scenic views oramazing buildings are on the site, and images thatcan really get the travel bug owing in you. Thereare plenty of pictures of delicious food (not goodto see if youre trying to diet), and some otherimages that are NSFW, so just keep that in mind ifyoure using Tumblr in a public place.

And of course, like everything else on the

Internet, politics has a place here, which certainly

breeds trolls. The main blog for President Obamasre-election campaign is on Tumblr, as is ComedyCentrals Indecision 2012 blog. Of course, aswith anything else on the Internet, be warnedthat if you try to comment on anything politicallycharged or emotionally charged, you will beripped apart electronically with the ferocity of allthe trolls who oppose what you say, even if yourenot being serious.

Tumblr is a fun site to use, particularly if yourean art nerd, or just a nerd in general. Therescertainly no shortage of hipsters or teenage emokids on the site, but in spite of that, theres a nichefor you there if you want to look. If nothing else, its a good way to nd cool pictures. A picturesworth a thousand words, right?

    Norman Music Goes Abroad

    Music

I bring you late-breaking news from the local music scene: NORMAN INVADES THECZECH REPUBLIC! I recently met with local producer Jarod Evans of Normans own

Blackwatch Studios and was regailed with stories from his recent trip to Prague in theCzech Republic to record two local music acts, Jacob Abellos new band Prettyboy andOklahoma Citys Modern Rock Diaries. The group recently spent a number of weeks inPrague tracking new, forthcoming material. I talked with Jacob Abello and ModernRock Diaries front man, Brantley Cowan, about their experience abroad.

Jacob Abello, singer, songwriter, and pop

artist based out of Norman, OK:

    1) What did you work on while in Prague?

I wasnt sure exactly what I was going to work on before embarking on the trip. On my debutrecord, I had been writing some of the songs for three or so years and had specic ideas of

how I wanted the record to sound. This wasnt the case at all for this EP. I originally intended

to write a song entitled Campaign 4 Champagne... However, Jarod and I wrote a song

impromptu in Prague. Recording is usually very daunting and scary for me. Faust Studios in

Prague reminded me of Blackwatch but something being in a foreign environment was both

freeing and inspiring. I wrote the lyrics for the verses of the new song in ve minutes. We also

took an entirely dierent direction on a song previously demoed entitled Falling 4 U. All of

that to say, I recorded an entirely dierent EP than what I expected, and I couldnt be happier about it. Though the EP was originally going

to be called Campaign 4 Champagne after the intended title track, it will now be titled after metro stop nearest the studio.

Brantley Cowan, front man and rhythm guitar player for Oklahoma Citys grunge-

inuenced indie rock outt, Modern Rock Diaries:

    2) How do you feel the city of Prague and your time there aected the sound of your music?

Prague is an incredible city with an unreal amount of historical signicance. Being the

birthplace of classical music, it denitely aected

the feel of our music as we usually have a strong

presence of violin and string parts in our sound.

We recorded all the strings in a 500-year-old

cathedral in the heart of Prague. All of thepiano was recorded in the studio there on a 19th

Century Steinway that had the most beautiful dark tone. A lot of rare European vintage mics

were used on vocals. Every element in some way was shaped by being there, from the studio

    to our overall environment.

Add a Chapter to Your Story

ncoming freshmen girls across the nation are cleaning up their Facebook pages and buying new outts

in preparation for the upcoming all-important rush process. Formal recruitment at OU starts August 9,

and rushees will be introduced to 11 chapters in the ve-day period. After the chaos of it all, about 25

percent of female students in the new class are expected to sign a house.

Why? Sisterhood of course! But what does that mean? It means joining the ranks of the scholars, stewards

and leaders that came before them. In fact, the all-sorority GPA for fall 2011 was 3.24. That number is

consistently higher than the all-woman GPA and has not been below 3.1 since 1998. Furthermore, OU

sororities logged over 6,000 individual community service hours and 25,800 group hours last year. Being

part of such a great organization adds a signicant point on any rsum, so it is no surprise that Greek

women hold leadership positions both on and o campus.

If you are interested in par ticipating in rush this year, registration is due Friday, July 13. Visit www.ou.edu/

    >>OntheAir

hen the temperature rises but the nightsstay cool, its time to take advantage ofhow great the outdoors are. Althoughthere are plenty of things that require

daylight, thankfully movies are not one of them. Sohere is a movie-lovers brief guide to how to makethe most of the summer weather.

Drive-ins are a bit few and far between inOklahoma, but you can nd them. The WinchesterDrive-In in Oklahoma City is located convenientlyclose to Norman, but there are a few other theatersscattered across the state for those of you who are up

for traveling during the summer.Drive-ins are a good way to enjoy the nighttime

and watch a movie in a dierent way than usual. Rolldown your windows, tune your radio to the rightstation, and take in the night air while you sit in aseat thats probably more comfortable than the onesyou nd in movie theaters.

Theres another way to enjoy both the summerand the movies, though. Across the country, its fairlycommon for neighborhoods to host free outdoorscreenings of lms. Whatever local committee ishosting the event sets up an enormous inatablescreen and lots of high-end speakers and folks fromthe area bring chairs and food to camp out andwatch the lm.

Unfortunately, this doesnt happen much inOklahoma, but theres no reason that you cantreplicate it. Summer-bummin and missing yourfriends? Host a movie party. You may not have a 50-foot screen and a eld, but maybe you have a shedand a backyard.

If you can get your hands on a projector, a whitewall (or a wall with a white sheet taped to it), and aset of external speakers, then you can host your ownoutdoor movie. If this sounds a little too technicalfor you, dont be afraid! Lots of local businesses andstudent organizations have the equipment, and if

you talk to the r ight person you might be able toborrow it. Its not as daunting as it sounds.

Invite your friends over to grill out, potluck orpicnic and catch up on your summers. Then have achili-o, wrestling match or pie-throwing contestto decide who gets to pick the movie. Pop somepopcorn, make some ice cream sundaes, and setup some blankets and lawn chairs to let the magicunfold.

If you keep the volume at just the right level, youllbe able to hear the movie in perfect balance withthat Oklahoma cicada sound of summer.

rrested Development follows the story of the Bluth family, a once-wealthy set of characters

who continue to lead excessive lifestyles. Michael Bluth, a widower with one son, is the center

of the show, and his parents, brothers, sister and other family members come in and out of his

life in quirky, dysfunctional ways. The show is shot in an atypical style: though it borrows from

documentary lms like many popular comedies, it uses handheld camera and frequent cutaways to photos,

archived family videos, security cameras and screenshots. The show has won several awards, including IGNs

Funniest Show of All Time. In 2009, plans to turn the series into a lm were set in motion, leading to the

re-installment of a new season to be shot this summer.

    Summer Sizzler ByMelGuapo

Summer Sizzler Series Volume 3Hit up Main Street for a new take on Summer Sizzlin.

Welcome back to the Summer Sizzler

series here at Boyd Street. I you dont

know me, Im your host Mel Guapo, and

my motto is, Ill never come at you the same

angle twice, unless I happen to do. [sic]

    This week were

    going to take a look

at what I hope will be

    an ever-increasing

    phenomenon in

    Norman. I call it:

    Sidewalk Sizzlin.

Its perhaps the most primitive orm o patio

culture, because as everyone knows, beore

there were patios, there were sidewalks(naturally). Yet do not underestimate the

power and glory o the sidewalk. There is

something electriying about being in the

ootpath o society. It eels good and lively

to see lie passing by; to rub elbows with

ones community. It provides an invigorating

    atmosphere.

    So let us

    turn to two

    o my newer

    personal

    avorite

    Norman

    patios. While

they may not technically be patios, they

are in act outdoor seating, and can be

utilized or both eating and drinking. And

thats patio culture. The best part is that

theyre neighbors. Im talking about Tres/

Pink Elephant and The Garage on East Main

    between Craword and Porter.

Sports ans o Norman are neigh guaranteed

to know The Garage. Its the home o the $3

Thunder turkey burger (during games), and

was packed every Thunder game o the na

And Norman oodies know Tres delicious

Southwestern are. (Now merged with Pink

Elephant?! Now serving both menus daily?!

    Thats sizzlin!)

    Summer SizzlerWhat I am here

    to ask is this:

    has anyone

    begun to ully

    appreciate thesidewalk seating

    now available

    at both ne

    establishments? I

    this thought has

not yet crossed your mind, and i it entices you,

hen please allow me to salivate your senses.

    Is that even sensical?)

However, beore you dismiss my argument or

what may or may not be a valid reason, lets get

one thing straight. Im like you. Theres nothing

worse than when one o your riends comes

back rom a year or a semester or a summer

abroad and they wont shut up about how

great it is over there or how dierent or how

hey miss the best bar or restaurant or ca just

over the Rue Dijonnaise or at the top o the hill

overlooking the universitesi and the Bosphorus

or whatever have you. Its horrible and nobody

should do that. And I can say that, because I,

Mel Guapo, have done that and come back and

wouldnt shut up about it. Its nobodys ault,

its just cultural jetlag. We cannot, and mustnot, however, dismiss

    anything European just

    because some travel-

    dandy brings it up.

    Having said that: LET ME

    TELL YOU ABOUT THE

    STREETS OF EUROPE! Just

kidding. I dont give a care. The point that I am

trying to make is that the Europeans are on to

something: Sidewalk Sizzlin is where its at.

Just take a look at that sidewalk seating. Thats

our Main Street, and it eels good to sit out

there with a pint or a margarita and watch

trafc drit by while you hash out your busines

or your pleasure. And i Mel Guapo had things his way, youd

see the whole lled with tables and chairs

(although well need more, tinier tables and

chairs once this Sidewalk Sizzlin thing takes

    o). And with Tres

    Pink Elephant and

    The Garage right

    next door to one

    another, you dont

    need to choose

    between the two!

    Keep a tab open a

    either bar!

    Changes at the Zoo Amp

Howard Pollack loses management of the OKC Zoo Amphitheatre.

    ByColinParajon

omething Phish-y is happening on August 29 when Phish will be playingfor the rst time in Oklahoma at the Oklahoma Citys Zoo Amphitheatre.Something shy also just happened last month, though, when the OKC ZooTrust unanimously voted to transfer management of the Zoo Amp after a30-year history with Howard Pollack.

Pollack, on-and-o president of the venue since 1978, considered the process unfairand voiced his opinions on the Zoo Amps Facebook Page in a series of rants titledRamblings of a Hopeless Insomniac. He alleged that the OKC Zoo Trust had a personalagenda to oust his company, F.M.G., in favor of 3Horse Productions, a companyincorporated one day prior to the date bids had to be submitted. Pollack is suspectof the winning bidder for several reasons, but among them are 3Horses associationswith Global Gaming/Remington Park Casino. He also claims 3Horse took credit for

shows in their bid actually booked by F.M.G.s parent company and argues that 3Horsesuse of a booking agent in Texas will take money away from Oklahoma. In attempts tokeep the venue, Pollack got 1,526 signatures on a petition named Keep the OKC ZooAmphitheater in the Hands of People Who Care and invited supporters to a specialsession of the Zoo Trust.

In the end, he failed to win the contract. So now Oklahomans await a new generationof shows at the Zoo Amp, named Best Concert Venue by The Oklahoman and OklahomaGazette for the past seven years. Pollack has not given up on the war to save his venueand promises to nish out the concert season, and the sta here at Boyd Streetwishes him luck. Thank you for bringing great rock and roll to our great state.

Visit www.zooamp.com for more info and a schedule of upcoming shows.

Here is an example of some of Pollacks Facebook musings:

Further Ramblings of an Insomniac by Howard Pollack

Here I sit one more time of many other times that I sat here in my rocking chair.

Thank god for my rocking chair, everyone who knows me knows that Im a Rocker androcking in my rocking chair just plain soothes my soul.

I sit and I ponder as all that has happened and all that is about to happen is going onsimultaneously within my being. I know that everything leads up to this point and inreverse everything that will happen leads back to this point that is now me sitting inmy rocking chair contemplating all my next moves.I am so lucky that at times I get to contemplate to sit back and listen to all that has beenand will be my makeup.

I sit back and realize that I am one lucky man to have so much in a world where othersmight not have so much.

I see that our children and our grandchildren are the future and what we do now is onlyan imprint of what is yet to come.

I am thankful that my parents taught that to me and I am blessed that I get to teachthat to them my kids and grandkids.

I nd myself sweating the small stu when always all along the big stu is inside of meand yet to come and screams to be let out.

I know my makeup and what I am possible of achieving yet I cry for the small stu that

    has aected me so dearly.

I know the best is yet to come because my soul demands it and I have to know to letgo some of those things that have held me back to not let me grasp for the stars that Iknow are a part of me that are apart of everyone and everything.

I am coerced by all that my being demands yet I stie it because I let myself just seewhat is here and now but dont see the glimmer of what is still yet to come.

I am a survivor I have sailed the wind have scaled the mountains, I oat like a featherin the wind and I surf theuniverse to hear its call. I getstunted by choice becauseI lose my sight but I surviveonce again because I open my

eyes to see.So once again, here I amsitting in my rocking chairsitting like I sat so many timesbefore- the best is yet to comeand now calmly I slip intosleep to dream the dreams Idream even as here I sit in myrocking chair.

Summer Olympics PreviewIts time to go for the gold!

You can follow Chris Joseph on ...

    @chrisjoseph1400

And listen to his show 360 Sports on Sports Talk 1400from 5-7 P.M. Monday through Friday.

t is time once again for everyone to put on the red, white and blue and c heer

on the good ol US of A. The Games of the XXX Olympiad are set to take

place in London in just a few weeks. Now come the hours and hours of TV

coverage of everything ranging from the original sports like track and eld tothings that look like activities that you would participate in with friends at a

BBQ, like badminton. It doesnt matter what the event is, it just seems like if

USA athletes are on the tube with a chance to win medals I know you, like

me, will be watching and cheering them on.

Everyone has their own special memory from watching the Olympics, an event

where extreme sacrice both rewards and crushes those who have worked so

hard to reach this level. Look at U.S. track and eld star LoLo Jones, who was in

the last Olympics coasting to a surere gold medal in the womens 110-meter

hurdle when she clipped the nal hurdle, sending her tumbling. She lost the

race without even placing in the top three. The look on her face, the look of,

wait this wasnt supposed to happen, I was meant to win. In this round ofthe Olympics, Jones has made great strides to ensure she wins.

I remember all the way back to the 84 Olympics in Los Angeles, that is my rst

true memory of how people get behind their country in athletics. I can recall

Carl Lewis burning up the track, Edwin Moses winning gold in the 400-meter

hurdles, and who could forget the darling of the 84 Olympic games, Mary

Lou Retton and her perfection in the world of gymnastics, becoming the rst

woman outside of eastern Europe to win the all-around competition.

Seoul, Korea held the 1988 Olympics and the lovely Florence Grith Joyner set

the Olympic record in the 100-meters. Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson stol

the glory from Carl Lewis, then the 100-meter championship was taken away

when Johnson tested positive for steroids. I remember it most for the robberyof Roy Jones Jr. in the boxing event, after a 3-2 loss to a South Korean boxer, and

allegations circled that Korean judges xed the ght. Oh yeah, this was also th

last time the USA Basketball team would not be represented by NBA players.

The 92 games in Barcelona this is short and sweet THE DREAM TEAM

This collection of NBA Hall of Famers and Christian Laitner made up the mos

dominant team in all of sports history. It was fun to watch, and the world tuned

in and saw what basketball was all about. The other thing to take from thi

Olympics was in the mens 400-meter seminals when Great Britains Derek

Redmond tore his hamstring and his father came down to the track to help hi

son nish to a standing ovation the true Olympic spirit.

I could go on and on about the great memories of Olympics past, but I will spare

you all for now. Just be sure to tune in and cheer on the USA in any event it ma

be. Stand proud and hope to hear The Star-Spangled Banner play loud and

    clear. USA! USA! USA! USA!
