Someone call the police because a savage business beating happened on June 10 at theElectronic Entertainment Expo. It was brutal.

Sony learned its lessons rom the PS3 launch, which was a disaster. Their E3 conerenceocused on games, gamers and the people who make games. Oh, and they also undercutMicrosots console price by 20% and split with the Xbox One philosophy on used gamesand console connectivity.

Lets rewind a bit rst: A ew weeks ago, Microsot underwent a somewhat savage PR stormas news leaked out that us ed games wouldnt be playable on the new Xbox, the Xbox One.Microsot released some ino that said that wasnt true but publishers could charge eesor gamers to play used games on their Xbox One accounts. Or they could bar gamers romplaying used games at all.

Microsot also put the onus on loaning games on the publisher. I a publisher allows it, gamelicenses could be shared with riends or amily, or you could give someone a game, but thelatter could only be done once or each game. Ever.

This upset some people who were conused and thought Microsot was completely barringused games (they werent) and trying to limit a persons ability to loan out their games (sorto).

The reality is Microsot is giving more power to the publishers to try and control the used-game market, which they think cuts into prots. Sure, some people wait to buy used games, but cheaper games means more gamers buy more games.

Fast orward to tonight: Sony waltzes onto the stage and starts laying out games. They dropKingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV, The Order 1886 (Whoa, a non-sequel!) and a myriado indie games, which was a push they promised as the anticipation to E3 built up.

Microsot had some good games too: They showed o the indie game Below, DicesBattleeld 4, blew my mind with a Killer Instincttrailer and maybe brought some hope backthat the Xbox One wouldnt be just about Kinect and Skype and limiting used games.

There were two key moments when Sony dragged Microsot into the street and kicked itsbusiness strategy in the teeth.

First: Sonys Chie Executive Jack Tretton walked on stage and said used games wont evercost an extra ee, you can lend games to your riends all that you want. All you have to dois give them the disc. Microsots loaning system requires transerring game licenses ratherthan the disc itsel.

Then, since Tretton didnt think that was enough, he also announced that the PS4 wouldnthave to run an online check every 24 hours, which the Xbox One will do to make s ure it isconnected to the internet. Microsots reasoning is to make sure the system is always up todate, but a ailed 24-hour check will prevent playing games until the system reestablishesan Internet connection.

Tretton could have dropped the mic and walked o the stage ater that. Instead, Sonyannounced the PS4 will cost $399.Microsots Xbox One will cost $499.In a slowly growing economy, that$100 will make a dierence. Thetwo hardcore gaming titans havedrawn their lines in the sand. I cantwait to see who nishes on top.

My money is on Sony. And thanks tothem, Ive got an extra $100 I canbet.

I know I just went o about how Sonybeat up on Microsot, but there is stillone more industry giant that hasntshown its E3 goods Nintendo.

But I dont think Nintendo is goingto make that big o a sp lash. Their newsystem, the Wii U, was released lastyear and its sales have sucked.

Nintendo will be looking to announcea lot o games or the squandering WiiU and the weak Nintendo 3Ds, bothsystems that need a consistent streamo good games to get them out o aslump.

Nintendo went through the wall rstwith the Wii U and took a big risk withthe tablet controller. Unlike the Wii a ndits motion controls, the tablet controllerwasnt an unmitigated success. NowNintendo is playing catch up.

They might drop a ew surprises, butI wouldnt expect more than a newannouncement oMariogames, aLegend o Zelda Wii U title and somePikmin 3 ootage.

It will be cool or the gamers that haveWii Us, but thats about it.

The beauty o song-poems is that they are a result o the intersection, orcollision, o ordinary peoples expression and the desires o musicians/businesses to make a quick buck, making the music as ast as theycan, usually in one take. When those two orces combine, they createstrangely compelling songs that are unlike anything youve ever heard. - lmmaker Jamie MeltzerA song-poem is when people respond to those ads that you see in thebacks o magazines, tabloids, comicbooks, that say, send us your lyrics,or, songwriters needed. An averageperson writes a poem or a set olyrics and sends it to a company thatpromises to take those words, set themto music, have them recorded, have arecord made. The inerence being thatyou could get into the music businessthis way There are hundredsand thousands o these records outthere. Most o them are ver y normal, average, in one ear and out theother sort o things, but then theresthat 10 to 20% that are just romanother planet somehow.- From the lm O the Charts: TheSong-Poem Story

There are certain moments withinthe vast realm o human experience, certain thresholds that, oncecrossed, one can never return rom. These moments are philosophicaland spiritual and they dene us as the human beings that we are a ndthe human beings that we will become. These moments are not only

dening, but also redening in that they redene what our denitiono is is. Our values are orever reshaped by such experiences; entireworlds can be altered with the understanding o a single idea. Andwhen this happens, you cant go home again.

In the span o 54 minutes, O the Charts: The Song-Poem Story oreverchanged my perspective on the meaning and the art o music andsongwriting.

I was working in a warehouse ora distributor at the time that I rstdiscovered the lm. It was yourtypical college work, somethingsimple enough to pay the bills thatworked as long as it didnt taketoo much out o you. My job wasto ll orders. Day in and day outor a little over a year, all I did was

ll orders. The warehouse was lled with racks o books, DVDs, CDs,kitschy inventions to help around the house, etc. My interest was rarelypiqued until my boss told me to toss a rack o DVDs. Take one homei you like, he said to me. So I did. And thats how I discovered thegreatest and best movie o all time.

To understand the importance oO the Charts, one must rstunderstand the inner working o the song-poem industry. The song-poemindustry is what many Americans might typically reer to as a scam, theinerence being that you could get into the music business this way Beginning in the 60s, the way it works is that the consumer (or, as I willreer to them, the Creator Patron) se nds in their very own lyrics to theproducer (or Proessional Service Provider). The consumer (CreatorPatron) covers the cost o the recording, which is then printed as asingle or part o a compilation. Over time the industr y has changed

and segregated on philosophical lines (as demonstrated in the lm),but at the core, the song-poem industry thrives on the principle o quickrecording turnaround. Although the chances o breaking into the musicbusiness this way are quite slim, the product is very real.

Over the years a lot o record collectors and people interested in popculture oddities and the avant-garde o popular American culture haveound these [recordings] and become interested in them. - Ellery Eskelin

Director Jamie Meltzer juxtaposes a variety o worlds. Meltzer ollowsseveral representatives rom the Creator Patrons, several representativesrom the Proessional Service Providers, and provides refective musingsrom what I reer to as Historians (appreciators o the song-poemindustry and artistry rom an outsiders perspective). A wide range ostrong characters emerges as Meltzer dives deep into and uncovers thissecret world.

[These recordingsare] something thatwould normallybe thrown on thecutting-room foor oany normal session, that would beorgotten. But in thecase o song-poems,thats the stu thatgets released, andI think thats kind o beautiul in a way because it gives music a certainintensity. The musicians know that this is itone timei we make a

mistake, whatever happens, i somebody alls o their chair, whatever, its staying in.

    - Ellery Eskelin

Essentially, everything about the song-poem itsel is wrong andrepresents direct opposition to all that we think o as holy in Art. Themusic is tossed o in a matter o minutes. The lyrics are untrained andunproessional. Its merely a business product. There is, however, acertain sincerity and simplicity in the songs, and a cer tain charm tothe immediacy o the music. And more importantly, NONE OF IT WASEVER MEANT TO EXIST. And when it did exist, it existed or only a brieficker in time. With the death o this lm, Im sure, will come the deatho the Song-Poem Industry. Things die, and thats okay, but you shouldreally watch this lm.

People are wild. Whatever comes in their mindyou never know whatit could be. Thats part o thegreat thing, I think, about it.So they wrote these things, and then they go about gettingthem recorded I dont thinktheyre doing it as a joke. They

were real sincere. They reallythought they had a good thing. And that they really wouldmake that million dollars orwhatever.Tom Ardolino

Families looking or un and serious cyclers alikecan nd what they need to go or a spin on a sunnysummer day at Buchanan Bicycles, 561 BuchananAve., on Campus Corner in Norman.

We have everything a amily will need to get rollingon a bike, said Tobin Vigil, owner, pointing to a smallbike without pedals that a child could ride easily. Andthats just or startersthere are bikes o pretty muchevery genre, Vigil says, including hybrids, which oera stable, comortable ride, and townies, which arethe perect town bike. Flatoot technology availableon some models is condence inspiring or some riderswho like to be able to set a oot fat on the groundwhen stopping. No matter the type o bike, seat orpedals chosen, Vigil can x customers right up.

Rows upon rows o bikes, saety equipment, gadgetsand accessories line the walls o the small bike shop inront and a workshop in back. The variety o bikes andrainbow o available colors is staggering. Customerswho want more choices are likely in luck because Vigilhas even more bikes in his warehouse out back. But Vigil is happy with his little store and warehouse overfow arrangement.

This is a small space. Its my home. I dont want to grow out o this space, Vigil says. Norman has been very good to me andmy amily.

The bike shop, owned by Tobin Vigil, is the oldest bike shop in Normanand has been in the same spot on the corner since 1973 when Fred

Cartcher opened it. Vigil apprenticed with Cartcher and learned to buildcustom bike rames, then worked or the next owner and in 2002, henally bought the business when he graduated rom college.

Dan Mattmiller, Norman resident and patron, says hes been requentingBuchanan Bicycles or over 30 years and hes known Vigil or well over 20

    years.

[Vigil] carries a ull selection o bikes or moms, kids, commuters andtownies, and Buchanan Bikes has everything as ar as racing tooMattmiller said. I youre a racer, Buchanan Bikes is the center o theculture. Its the Tun Tavern and the Haight Ashbur y o bicycling culture inthis area.

Avid cyclist Steve Vasilo, who has traded at Buchanan Bicycles since1984, echoed Mattmillers sentiment.

I anyone wants a high-end bike, theyll go to Buchanan Bicycles, Vasilosaid. Tobin has kept the legacy o Buchanan Bicycles. He still works withormer owner, Fred Cartcher, to build high-end custom bikes that are kindo neat, and he has new but vintage-looking kinds o things. There is acultural atmosphere at the bike shop. Hes laid back. Its just that kind oplace.Vigil lives and breathes bicycles, and no matter what kind o ride patronsare looking or, they can nd it at Buchanan Bicycles. I Vigil doesnt haveit, he can get it because, as Vasilo says, Tobin is interested in helpingNorman become a more act ive cycling community.

You know Barney rom How I Met Your Mother? I you dont, hes a hoe o sho.Barney slayed in Pantytown or eons, and during those loose years he accumulated along list o rules he believed to be key or any man chasing skirt. Ted, Barneys BFF, gotintroduced to one o those relationship rules when he regretully announced to Barney hewas meeting up with an ex or dinner. It went down like this:

Barney: Ted, what is my one rule?Ted: You can tell how old a girl is by her elbows?Barney: My other one rule.Ted: Flax seed relieves upset stomach?Barney: My other one rule.Ted: Always have a ake pair o concert tickets in your pocket in case Lily invites you tosomething stupid?Barney: My other one rule.Ted: Lebanese girls sprint to third base and then stay there?Barney: My other one rule.Ted: New is always better?Barney: New is always better!

As much as I dont want to co-sign with Barney, considering hes not real and the characteris a chauvinistic slut-puppy, I must say he-whore is onto something. Ive even quoted thisparticular rule in real lie. I havent LIVED by this rule, but Ive quoted it. When I say I agreewith it, Im saying I 80% agree with it. I something didnt work in the past, us ually theres adarn good reason and its doomed in the uture. However, usually isnt always.

Good or horrible, humans commonly revisit an exs arms. A ew hopeless rationales orgoing in relationship-reverse are:1. Sex Drive2. Loneliness3. Jealousy

    4. Comort in the known as opposed to discomort in orging the unknown5. Sugar-coated memories smothering current realityThose are a ew bad examples. But sometimes people reconnect with old lovers because o:1. Happenstance2. Lie change3. Re-evaluation o wants and needs4. Better timing5. Forgiveness and many other legitimate and understandable reasons.

Sometimes peoples paths re-cross due to a mixture o healthy and unhealthy reasons, andtheir relationship ends up looking like a giant haphazard salad a stoner made rom productsound in Grandmas ridge.

Maybe it will work. Maybe it wont. Thats lie. Unknown outcome is true o any relationshipno matter i youve been married 20 years or two minutes, dating or keeping it casual, hanging with the love o your lie or kickin it with a subpar dumpster tur key, beginning a

relationship with a new hottie ortrying round deuce with an ex youused to want to choke out. No oneknows how the story is going to end.The rule to ollow is i youre happy, youre good.

So, i youre considering re-dating an ex fame, try to remember the past asvividly as possible - the whole past, not just the gushy bits. Careully consider thereasons you split. I you can healthily, ethically, morally and with ull sel-esteemintact accept those reasons, then orgive and move on with your par tner into anew and dierent version o being together. This rarely happens, by the way, butit can, so i you eel youve crunched the numbers and ended up with a positivesum, go or it. Otherwise, take a page out o Barneys Playbook. New isalways better.
