The Power of PlayersOne of my favorite memories is rippingthe glistening plastic off a diminutiveblue box, pulling out the blue cartridgeand sliding it into my Gameboy color.Hearing that opening beat of Pokmonwas a defining moment in my lifetimeas a gamer, playing a video game thatseemed infinite with its 150 pocketmonsters and countless battles against

other trainers trying to become the bestthere ever was.

I beat that game numerous times. Duringevery attempt, I cobbled together a newPokmon team that would carry me tovictory, to defeat Red and become thePokmon League Champion. These moments are memorable becausethe game opened my eyes to not onlyturn-based RPGs a genre of game Ienjoy immensely but it was one of thefirst games that hooked me. I couldntget enough.

And Im not alone. Many gamers remember their time with Pokmon Red and Blue, and itsstatus as an historic gaming artifact is set in stone. Many of us go back and play the game toremember how we were young a time when we would need light to play our non-backlightGame Boys.

This year, though, 90,000 people decided to play the game at the same time.

You may have heard of Twitch Plays Pokmon, but to recap, someone created a version ofPokmon Red that would take commands from a Twitch chat channel, a streaming videoservice that allows gamers to watch other gamers play games.

So, starting in the middle of February, tens of thousands of gamers flooded the chatchannels with input commands, screaming a, start, up, down and whatever othercommand they felt was necessary at the time. And the game would respond by completingthe commands in order. Sometimes it would propel the hero forward; other times it wouldrelease his most prized Pokmon.

It was the gaming equivalent of the saying a room full of monkeys could write Shakespeareif given enough time. These chaotic commands compelled the hero toward the PokmonLeague Championship. They captured Pokmon, leveled them up and pushed through eachcity and gym leader.

And on March 1, they beat the game.

90,000 people joined an online chat room and managed to beat a relatively complicatedgame that featured puzzles, tough battles and the ability to screw yourself at any time byreleasing Pokmon. And they beat it together while groups of those 90,000 were trying toundermine the game by running the player into walls or using the wrong abilities during

    battles.

To say its incredible is an understatement. The U.S. Congress cant make decisions on adaily basis and they have smaller groups that communicate together.

The power of people can often be awe inspiring, even if it is used on something as silly asPokmon. It is proof that even through chaotic discourse, we move toward a common goalof success.

Of course, your Pokmon might be named AAAAATTTTTTVVVV, but I guess that comeswith the territory.

Titanfall is out now and games are likelyrodeo-ing and summoning mechs as theyshoot and jump their way to victory in thegames six-on-six combat.

The new game from Respawn Entertainment the team who made Call of Duty: ModernWarfare1 and 2 is a multiplayer-only, fast-paced shooter that pits small teams of playersagainst each other. There are several differentguns and abilities, and each player gets their

own Titan, a mechanical suit that exchangessmall-caliber rounds for rockets and tankshells.

The matches are fast paced and feature NPCcharacters players can kill to earn extra pointsand summon their Titans more quickly. Playersare mobile, able to double jump, mantle upledges and run on walls with ease. It givesthe game a wonderful verticality that makesBattlefieldand Call of Dutylook like snails ina race against agile mice.

So, if you like fast-paced action with giantmechanical suits, then this is the game foryou. However, the game often feels like youare a lone wolf and has a distinct feeling ofa lack of team play that you get with gameslike Battlefield. Fans of large-scale team-basedconflict should stay away.

    OConnellsDear Alexis,

I am newly single. So is my friends friend - lets call him Rob. We both feel chemistry but have waited a while to act on anything justbecause we both came out of rotten relationships. Thing is, Rob and I areboth ready to pursue something, but our mutual friend says no and thinkswere not ready. What should I do? I want to respect my friends wishessince shes in the middle, but I think a re bound is good for me.

    From Conflicted

    Dear Conflicted,

If Rob is a reb ound, dont do it. Go rebound off a wall, or GoodtimeGary, or anyone whos not in your friendship circle.

If you meant youre ready to star t dating again, and you sincerely like Rob,then read on.

Its awesome you and Rob have waited to act on the shared attraction.Thats smart. Coming out of a rotten relationship can leave you questioningyourself, others and life in general. You need to let the dust settle before youpick a direction to travel, and that se ems to be what youve done.

Now that youre ready to pursue something, Murphys Law has stepped in. OFCOURSE it just so happens the obstacle between you and the person of interest isa mutual friendsomeone both you and Rob respect and value. Thats lifes sicksense of humor.

The first step to this de bacle is figuring out what you really want. Take intoconsideration with any relationship there are risks, and when youre dating afriend, or a friend of a friend, dating will change your friendship. It might onlynudge it, or maybe it will sculpt it into a diamond ring, or maybe it will eventuallyresemble a pile of poo. No one knows.

There are a ton of different outcomes for your relationship if you decide to date, but the one Im sure you fear, as does mutual friend, is the one where you and Robfantasize about keying each others cars and your friend circle is busted. Thatswhy you need to think before you act, and think hard.

After you do that, go with your gut and invest in your happiness. If you decide dating Rob is what you want, have a talk with mutualfriend first. You dont do this because you have to, but out of reverence for your friends feelings. When you talk, you dont ask forpermission on your life decisions. Have a ver y open, honest discussion explaining where you sit. Spotlight your respect and considerationfor everyone involved. Highlight your concerns, and add that you will do your best to protect and preserve the circle of friendship nomatter what. Tell your friend you value her opinion, but this is about yourhappiness, and as your friend, you hope she supports your happiness.

Clich reminder: Your job is not to always agree with, understand, judge orscrutinize your friends. Your job is to love and support your friends, stinkyarmpits and all.

    Good luck.

This week Im going to do something a little different. I may be your friendly neighborhood rock-and-roll writer, but Ive gotideas about a lot of things in this wide world, and one of those things is fashion. I see it all around me. I would say that thereis a lack of fashion in Oklahoma, except that I dont believe in such a thing as lack of fashion, because that in and of itselfis really just another kind of fashion. This week I would l ike to share with you my experience with fashion growing up inOklahoma. So please sit back and relax as Mel Guapo takes you cat walking

    AND NOW:

CAT WALKING, by Mel GuapoFashion is a form of communication, and the essence of that communication is this: I think I look great, and I think you look likean idiot.

Nothing wrong with that. The truth is that youve got to respect Fashion because thats all there is. Theres no such thing as NoFashion. The absence of Fashion is just another kind of Fashion, the way zero is just another kind of number. Zero is actuallymy favorite number. My second favorite number is 1. Those two can do a lot together.

But fashion is no numbers game. Fashion comes from the gut. Standing in f ront of your wardrobe is a holy thing. When I wasa child, my mother would remind me to put on the whole Armor of God ever y morning. That was a holy act too, and it was allabout fashion.

First there was the Belt of Truth. Not sure why you would put a belt on rst, but again, fashion is not always practical. It justmakes sense to you in your gut. Then there was the Breastplate of Ri ghteousness, and then I would shed my feet with the Gospelfor its quickness and good grip, lik e Air Jordans. Finally, the Shield of Faith, a good shield.

Then I would get dressed up in my regular clothes as well, because it wouldnt be appropriate for me to show up at school

wearing only the full armor of God, although for years my mom had a difcult time explaining that to me.We nally agreed that it wasnt right, but it was just something that I would have to do.

My favorite shirt when I was a kid was a no-fear Second Place is the First Losershirt that I tricked my dad into buying me at aFoot Locker. Mom wasnt with us and Dad didnt know any better, so I got away with it. It was my birthday and Mom couldnttake it back from me on account of Dads pride, which is admirable. Of course Mom never let me wear it to school because it

was too aggressive, as she said. So I wore my Know Fear shirt she got me at church camp instead, which was my number-two shirt.

These days my favorite shirt i s a blue button-down Oxford because its neutral and doesnt come off as too aggressive. In theend, thats what fashion is really all about: getting comfortable. I say get comfortable.

    The belt of truth.

Whats Going Next to the Deli?

Id like to see an H&M, said Kylee, an OU alumnus.

Maybe a custom shoe boutique, suggested Sam, a current student.

A skate shop would be nice, Mike, a local worker, added.

All around Campus Corner, everyone has been buzzing about what will take the place of the blank spot currentlyinhabiting 315 White St. a.k.a. the b uilding next to the Deli. The building used to belong to Totos Italian Pizza. And although customers were reassured that the pizza they were ingesting wasnt some off-brand Canadian orLatvian pizza, they didnt seem to spread this heartfelt compassion to the online reviews of the fare that used to beserved there. Alas, the compa ny shut down and the building sat dormant until recently. A fire eventually ravagedthe building, and it was torn down, lea ving behind a vacant lot in between the Deli and Campus TV & Music. Inthe immediate years since then, everyone has forgotten what used to be there, and now the pervasive q uestion oneveryones minds is Whats next?

In 2012, some answers finally started to come in.

On September 30, 2012, a demolition permit wassubmitted for the building, and a year later, onSeptember 22, 2013, a commercial construction permitwas submitted by CAMC LLC, for a three-story $1 million

    restaurant with office space.

Now, in early 2014, the ground has yet to b e broken onthe site, but on January 9 of this year, the city of Normanapproved the commercial building permit and issuedBill Wilson permit #5277, the million-dollar restaurantconstruction plan for an estimated 11,851 square feet. The plot of land itself is actually 4,308 square feet, so thethree stories definitely checks out.

It was exciting to learn that the historic Campus Cornerwould soon be getting a swanky new building, but whowas exactly responsible for this?

    The answer may surprise you.

Digging into CAMC LLC, I was able to find out that a man by the name of Peter Walker was the principal ownerof the company and that he also had a hand in some other businesses here in Norman. When you cross-referencethe headquarters for CAMC LLC, it just so hap pens to be the sa me listing as one of Mr. Walkers other enterprises,Top of the World caps.

Tyler WorshamFeature Top of the World has been around since the CEO Peter Walker began selling collegiatefootball games. As his companys website exbegan in a converted gas station is now a 100foot warehouse in Norman, Oklahoma.

Located off of NW 36th Street, Top of thbeen busy expanding over the recent yearsand more Normanites. On top of that, somto learn is that Peter Wilson is always strihis businesses not only profitable for the co

also impactful in a positive way. For instthe World is committed to having the smallethe environment as they possibly can. Fro

company claims to have saved approximately 3,000 trees and 1,000,000 gallons of water. On recycle over 5.5 tons of cardboard each month, along with the thousands of pounds of paper and pthey also recycle every year.

When I learned that the same guy responsible for Top of the Worlds success here in town was thevacant lot next to the Deli, I became excited for what the three-story restaurant could be. It seemeanyone to set the theme of their restaurant to a flat bill hat, so I kept on digging to see what else I about Peter Wilsons other endeavors.

I cruised on over to Top of the Worlds Facebook page, which you should also hit up. One status themy eye. Featured was an advertisement for Terra Verde Caf, an event to help raise money and awaRegional Food Bank of Oklahoma. T he ad mentioned the fact that the event would be held at CEO

    own restaurant

    Benvenutis.

Thats right! The guy who owns Top ofthe World caps also owns Benvenutis,a gourmet eatery offering old worldItalian with a new world twist thatopened in March of 2005 behind theexpertise of Chef Anthony Compagni.Benvenutis is really fancy, and youmay have only been there once forValentines, but its basically the best

you can get around here. Featuringan old Tuscan design inside of whatused to be a historic trolley station, the

restaurant has been a staple for promnights and anniversaries.

Sure, Peter Wilson may have a great apparel company that has offered many residents one of the work in the state while also reducing his companys carbon footprint, saving a historic Campus Cdegradation and donating his restaurants time and money to great causes. But just when you thoutake a break, he up and co-founded a private alternative learning school in his community with his w

Terra Verde Discovery School, whose students help raise the moneyfor the Regional Food Bank throughBenvenutis Ristorante, is a privatenot-for-profit school expanding agrade level per year, which wasfounded by the couple in 2010 anddesigned around ideas gained fromexhaustive tours of similar institutionsaround the nation. The couple wenton the tour of schools, hoping to

offer their own children an education that was focused just as much on social development as academia.

Our major inspiration for founding a school was our children, Shelly Wilson told the Norman Transcript on May25, 2012. We wanted our kids to have the best education possible and learn to be critical thinkers and not justgood test-takers.

I spoke with Bill Mason, the worker listed on the construction permit, andhe wouldnt tell me any specifics on the project. However, he did confirmthat Peter Wilson was the man behind the project. The good news: Therewill soon be a million-dollar three-story restaurant with possible office and/orliving space available soon, next to the Deli at 315 White St. The bad news:we dont know what kind of restaurant (Urban project forum OKCTalk.comspeculates it will be an upscale pizza place).

Given the fact that Peter Wilson has already established himself as a successfulrestaurateur and businessman with Benvenutis Ristorante, Top of the Worldand Terra Verde Discovery School, Id say historic Campus Corner is in goodhands. And knowing now what I do about all of the good this man has donefor the city of Normandonating time and money to charity, as well ascreating jobs and educational programs in the communityI cant wait to seewhat amazing changes his newest project brings to 315 White St. No matterhow you slice it (upscale pizza pun), whatever is going there should be coolenough to make us stop calling it the building next to the Deli.
