Excellence and Opportunity BHPS News Issue 32 Term 4 18 October 2017 News from the Principal Improving safety around our school As part of classroom programs students are regularly taught about road safety. Our Year 5 students also implement the Stay Safe Ranger Program to identity potential issues in the Kiss and Drop Zone. Last week I met with a number of our Year 5 students who have done an excellent job this year and they shared with me some of their concerns about driver and pedestrian safety. Transport NSW provides the following advice to families. Drop-off and pick-up by car Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in school zones. Look out for buses pulling out. Always park and turn legally around schools and avoid dangerous manoeuvres like U- turns and three-point turns. Give way to pedestrians, especially when entering and leaving driveways. Drop off and pick up students on the school side of the road in the designated drop-off and pick-up area. It's safest for the children to get out of the car on the kerb side of the road away from passing traffic. Walking together to and from school Where possible, use pedestrian crossing areas. Always hold your child's hand up until the age of eight. Drop off and pick up your child near the school gate and avoid calling them from across the road. Talk to your children about Stop, Look, Listen and Think every time they cross the road: - Stop one step back from the kerb - Look for traffic to your right, left and right again - Listen for the sounds of approaching traffic - Think whether it is safe to cross I would also encourage you to discuss with your children the importance of safe behaviours when travelling to and from school. If students are ever approached by a stranger they should know to walk away and report the situation to an adult as soon as is practical. Outstanding Sport Representation Congratulations to Ella W, Lexie W, Polly V, Harry U and Mack M who were selected to represent Sydney North at the Metropolitan Waterpolo Gala Day on Monday 13 November 2017. We are very proud of the students' achievements. P & C Meeting The next P & C Meeting will be held on Monday, 25 October at 7pm in the School Library.
