Dear Bend Brewfest Enthusiasts:

For the last 106 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been making a significant impact in the lives of children across the nation. The mission of BBBS is to empower youth to achieve their highest potential through meaningful one-to-one relationships with caring mentors. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon has been providing mentoring services for 16 years.

The simple act of mentoring a child can have long-lasting benefits. We are in the business of “Changing how our Children grow up in our Community.” A Big Brother or Big Sister match is carefully administered and supported by rigorous standards and trained personnel. Professional agency staff strive for matches that are not only safe and well suited to each child’s needs, but also harmonious and built to last. That is why so much care is taken in screening and orienting volunteers, and then in matching them with children. In 2009, we served 450 matches throughout the tri-county area. However, there are many more children who could benefit. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ recipe for success is quite simple. We need “Bigs” and “Bucks.” These two elements are critical in sustaining our current program and paramount in order to help vulnerable children beat the odds.

We partner with the Bend Brewfest each year to create awareness and utilize the event to recruit potential Big Brothers and Big Sisters to join our organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters is very appreciative to the Bend Brewfest event crew and organizers for selecting us to be a part of this community-wide event.

Please consider being part of something “Big.”

Enjoy the 6th Annual Bend Brewfest, and thank you for supporting the No. 1 mentoring organization in the country.

Sincerely,

Mark Wilke, Program DirectorBig Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon

For a thousand good reasons, Bend, Oregon is widely known as the premier outdoor playground of the United States. But a lesser-known element of the Bend experience is the city’s extraordinary abundance of craft beer — incredibly delicious craft beer. In our little mountain town of 82,000 people, Bend has seven world-class craft breweries, all within walking distance of one another and awaiting your visit.

Use the Bend Ale Trail Map and Passport available in the latest Discovery Map of Central Oregon to discover Bend’s seven breweries — and for extra credit, head to our neighboring brewery in Sisters to visit the eighth! Be sure to get your passport stamped at each location. When you get all seven stamps, stop by or send your completed passport to the Visit Bend

Welcome Center and receive a commemorative Bend Silipint made especially for beer drinkers on the go! And, if you do your extra credit and visit Sisters, you’ll receive a special surprise.

The Bend Ale Trail gives visitors and locals alike a glimpse into the unique craft brewery culture of Central Oregon. Learn about the cutting-edge brewing techniques used by Bend’s brewers, meet the artisan brewers who have launched the Bend beer scene onto the world stage, and experience the diversity of styles, art and taste that differentiate each of our region’s breweries.

One of the most asked questions is, “How do I get around Bend to do the Bend Ale Trail?” The Bend Ale Trail is definitely

walkable or bikeable. All of the breweries are within a few square miles, and a handful of the breweries are located in downtown Bend. If you prefer to be shuttled or take a pedicab, contact John Flannery of the GETIT Shuttle (also known as Green Energy Transportation) at 541-610-6103. He offers Bend Ale Trail tours and is happy to schedule a private large group tour if you are interested. There is no purchase required to

participate in the Bend Ale Trail.

Get ready to RUN! The inaugural Deschutes Brewery Twilight 5K run/walk will take place on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. This will be Bend’s first midweek race and will capitalize on the long days and warm temperatures of August. The course

will be an all-pavement affair that takes you through two of the premier parks along the beautiful Deschutes River. The race starts and finishes at the Deschutes Brewery off Shevlin-Hixon Drive in the Old Mill District.

The Twilight 5k will be a great time and a unique event here in Bend, Oregon because after you get done putting the hurt on this course, you’ll be treated to a beer garden featuring Deschutes Brewery’s Twilight Summer Ale, great post race food, and some music to shake

your booty to if you have any energy left. The race will also kick off the Bend Brewfest. There is nothing like a little run to help earn those calories that those tasty beverages contain.

I know you think this can’t get any better — a run, beer, food, music — but wait, it does. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Central Oregon. This is a worthwhile charity to support here in our fine community. For more information, go to www.rmhcofcentraloregon.org.

DEFINING ABV

ABV stands for “alcohol by volume.” It is a standard measure of how much

alcohol (ethanol) is contained in an alcoholic beverage, like beer.

DEFINING IBU

IBU stands for “International Bittering Units.” This is a

measurement of the actual bitterness of a beer as contributed by the alpha acid from hops. Generally speaking, beers with IBUs of less than 20 have little to no apparent hops presence,

IBUs from 20-45 offer a mild to pronounced hops presence, and

IBUs greater than 45 — while still considered mild by many Northwest

brewers’ standards — offer a more pronounced hops flavor and

bitterness.

Dump Truck Extra Pale Summer Bock (Light Bock)Unfiltered, lager bock beer using German

sauermalt, organic Montana “Spitz malt” pilsner malt plus three hoppings using Hallertauer Perle and the rare Tettnang aroma hops (both imported from Germany). Dump Truck uses a yeast strain, specially formulated in Germany, to make this beer a rare experience — like the one Jurgen Knoller, Master Brewer and President of Bayern Brewing, had on one of our company rafting trips. He learned first-hand that a Dump Truck is when the raft flips, depositing all contents not tied down into the raging river. He thought this would make an excellent name for this beer, invoking summer fun and the unexpected — like running a Class VI rapid.ABV: 6.50% IBUs: 25

What are hops anyway? For nearly 1,000 years, hops have been used in the beer brewing process. Hops are the flower clusters on the fast-growing herbaceous perennial hop plants, which are used as a flavoring, preservative and stability agents in the brewing process. These handy little flowers also balance the flavors of the beer, contributing a bitterness that complements the sweetness of the malts.

“Deschutes Brewery has used whole leaf hops (and have invested heavily behind them) from day one because we believe they yield a better beer with better flavor,” said Larry Sidor, brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery. “We’re big fans of Mother Nature and keeping our brewing ingredients as close as possible as to what she provides.”

In addition to a healthy dose of bitter, hops contribute floral, citrus and herbal aromas, while also aiding in the retention of the beer’s “head,” or the length of time that the foamy head on the beer (created by carbonation) will last.

Hops are the main factors in a beer’s “IBU” rating – or International Bittering Units. The higher this rating, generally, the more hops were used during the brewing process. For example, a more “mainstream” beer like Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale has an IBU rating of 37. Ninkasi’s Tricerahops Double IPA has a staggering rating of 100, the highest measureable IBU rating.

Art & Beer … Hand-in-hand in more way than one. Some would say the brewing process itself is an art form, and after tasting the beers at the Bend Brewfest, we’re sure you’ll agree. But many breweries

take this marriage a step further by commissioning artwork for the packaging and labels that adorn their beer.

Perhaps one of the best known collaborations of this kind is the annual Jubelale from Deschutes Brewery, which commissions artwork from a different Northwest artist each year. The art ranges from traditional to abstract, and original paintings can

be viewed at the end of the company’s free daily brewery tours.

They certainly aren’t the only ones looking for the perfect label. In a recent article from the Los Angeles Times, this affinity with art is prevalent throughout the craft beer world. “The estimated 1,500 craft brewers in the U.S….are an intensely independent lot. Having broken from conformity…microbrewers naturally take the next

step and produce labels as quaint and curious and quirky as the liquid in the bottles.”

Breaking the Glass Ceiling …Women in Brewing

Although men dominate the brewing industry, history tells us that brewing was traditionally a woman’s job. Women are returning to brewing and making significant strides (not to mention good beer) in the process.

In fact, both Full Sail Brewing Company and New Belgium Brewing are owned by women. Irene Firmat, who founded Full Sail in 1987, was recently named Woman Executive of the Year by the Portland Business Journal. New Belgium was started by couple Kim and Jeff Jordan in the late 80s. Kim started out as the company’s first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner. Now she is the CEO.

Many women also serve in the “trenches” so to say, using creativity and panache to brew great beers. Tonya Cornett, brewmaster for Bend Brewing Company, has been brewing with the company for eight years. A recent winner of the World Beer Cup Brewmaster of the Year Award, Cornett believes that either gender can do the job of brewing.

“There are so many of us [women] in the industry, and we are all really excited about it,” Cornett said in a recent interview aired on brewpublic.com. “I don’t think this has to be a male-dominated field. Women are just as capable of doing this job.”

Was the beer you drink brewed by…gasp…a woman? We’ll never tell…and we’re sure you won’t be able to either. So raise a toast with us to the brave women who are taking back the brewhouse!

Craft beer … in a can?According to the National Brewers Association, 45 craft breweries across the country now can at least some beer. It may seem like blasphemy to some, but brewers insist that the beer tastes the same coming from a can (although many encourage the pouring of beer – no matter its original package – into the appropriate chilled glass to enjoy properly).

What’s even better is that the can makes the beer more portable, easier to enjoy “on the run,” so to say. For a summer filled with rafting, boating, hiking and more, the lightweight portability of a can isn’t limited to “macrobrews” any longer.

One of the newest beers to hit the can is Pyramid Breweries summer seasonal “Haywire Hefeweizen,” which is available in 16-ounce cans in the Seattle and southern California markets only. California’s 21st Amendment Brewery cans all of its beers, which sport fun names like “Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer” and “Brew Free or Die IPA.”

“We chose cans for three main reasons. They are better for the beer because they keep it fresher; better for the environment because of their recyclability and lightweight; and better for the craft beer drinkers’ lifestyle because they are more portable,” said Nico Freccia, owner of 21st Amendment.

You don’t have to schlep heavy bottles up to the top of the trail. Crack open a can of craft brew to celebrate your journey.

WIDMER BROTHERS BREWING CO Portland, OR

Drifter Pale AleWith its unique citrus character, smooth drinkability and distinctive hop character, Drifter Pale Ale is truly an original. Brewed with generous amounts of Summit hops, a variety known for their intense citrus flavors and aromas, Drifter has a taste unique to the Pale Ale category. True to style, the bittering hops are perceptible enough to give the beer a crisp, clean, quenching finish, yet also soft enough to keep the beer smooth and balanced.ABV: 5.70% IBUs: 32

W’10 Pitch Black IPAPitch Black IPA is a Pacific Northwest twisted tribute to an IPA style of beer, It is almost a traditional IPA but it is instead brewed to the emerging style of Cascadian Dark. We add a modest amount of a specially made debittered black malt to give this IPA a very dark color but without the characteristic dark malt flavors. Pitch Black IPA is hopped generously in the brewhouse and then again later during the dry hopping process. Hopheads of the world will certainly enjoy this dark version of IPA, as will beer drinkers looking for something new and experimental to fill their pint glass.ABV: 6.50% IBUs: 65

The Low-Down on NitroRecently I was asked to write a piece about what makes Nitro beer so tasty. What better excuse to partake in “research.” I mean, do I have a tough job or what? With thirst in hand and an eye for nitro, the wife and I hit five local brewpubs to see what we could learn.

All in all we found three local nitros (two stouts and a black ale) and a nitro IPA from Colorado (at one of Bend’s finer restaurants). Were our search in winter, we’d likely have found even more. Right or wrong, a lot of folks equate nitro with dark beers which are consumed more in the colder months.

So the question remains: why is nitro beer so tasty? I’d say there are two main reasons.

First, nitro creates a slow pour. It takes time to fill the glass. At first the entire beer appears creamy. Then the cream cascades upwards until one to two inches of super dense foam condenses on top. This cascading effect is also known as fallout and, when witnessed in good light, is visually stunning. Oh sweet anticipation!

Second, nitro beer is smoother, creamier and softer. Every sip must pass through that dense foam curtain which serves to hold back the bitter elements while permitting the chocolate, coffee and in the case of the IPA, citrus flavor to filter through. Pure heaven!

So the next time you hit the brewpub, consider a nitro beer. My guess is you won’t be disappointed.

The tradition of the Old Mill District limited edition posters and pint glasses continue with new designs this year. For the third year in a row, shoppers and concert-goers can add to their collections by redeeming receipts to receive a FREE signature poster or pint glass. Visitors can bring a Les Schwab Amphitheater concert ticket, along with $50 in receipts from any of the Old Mill District shops, restaurants, galleries or cinemas to qualify. Didn’t go to a concert? How sad. A cool free pint glass or poster can still be yours by bringing in receipts totaling $100 or more to the Ticket Mill or the Oregon Duck Store. Go home happy! In 2008, pint glass designs

included art dedicated to the Old Mill District, Mt. Bachelor, the Les Schwab Amphitheater and Mirror Pond. Last year, a new colorful Old Mill District design, Smith Rock, Nordeen Nordic ski Shelter and the Deschutes River graced the shelves of patrons.Paul Leighton at Steller Design has done it again in 2010, with more nods to area landmarks, including Sparks Lake, The Badlands and the Cascade Mountain Range. A special glass dedicated to the National Cyclocross Championships, held in Bend for 2009 and 2010, will also be available this year. Posters and glasses can be purchased at the Ticket Mill, The Duck Store and Visit Bend.

RAISE A PINT!Cheers to the Old Mill District Glass & Poster Designs

Staff Favorites:Mirror Pond (Deschutes), Jubelale 2010 (Deschutes)JASON: “My favorite beer over at 10 Barrel is their Bourbon Barrel RIPA. Otherwise it would be their Code 24.”PAUL: “My favorite beer at Three Creeks is called an IBA (Not IPA). As I understand it, the batch was a mistake but tasted so good they regularly brew it now. It’s in my all-time top 10 beers. Not sure if they will have it in time for the Brewfest though, but it is a cool story. Wayne, the owner can tell you more, I’m sure.”

Faceout Creative is a graphic design studio and idea shop located in the Old Mill District. Their work is continually recognized by Communication Arts, Print magazine, STEP magazine, Graphis, CMYK, Graphic Design: USA, Eye Magazine, HOW, the American Advertising Federation, and Bend’s local Ad Federation.

After moving our design studio to Bend this winter, our first order of business was to seek out some interesting local projects to sink our teeth into. The downside to having a national client base outside of Bend is the lack of day-to-day personal interaction with those we work with every day.So, we began our quest looking for the best clients and the best projects here in Bend. Sounds greedy. One night, after working through several finely crafted beers at Deschutes, we realized that Bend really is an amazing craft brewing town. If we could combine our love of beer with our passion for design, we were on board. Soon thereafter, the wonderful folks at the Old Mill District brought us on board to help re-launch the Bend Brewfest after a one-year hiatus. As a team, we worked on many new logo options, but along with the Old Mill crew felt the mark that said Beer and Bend the best was the beer bottle, smoke stack logo. It was important to establish Bend as a beer destination and to lay the groundwork for a festival that has big plans for the future. In addition to an all new look for this year’s festival, there will be some great merchandise made available. Yeah, stuff you’ll actually want to wear. And as for next year, several ambitious plans are in the works that will bring some unique recognition to the beer industry in this town and, more importantly, the great and colorful characters who are brewing the beers we all love. Stay tuned!

Cheers! Charles Brock, Torrey Sharp and the crew at Faceout Creative.
