Guests in our brewpub have a frontrow seat to view our genuine German cop-per brewing kettles, which are unique inWashington. Alpine Brewing Companymakes its home in Oroville, WA in Okanogan County. Oroville, named for the Spanish word for “gold”, was a pioneer town, aservice point for gold miners, a railroad town, and servicing cat-tle ranches, farms, and orchards bearing many different fruits. Itis also a border town. One of the first customs offices for a bor-der crossing east of the Cascades was established in the centerof what is now downtown Oroville. Today, visitors to Orovillecan still strike gold, in the form of golden brews flowing fromthe taps of the Alpine Brewing Company brewpub.

BIG SKY BREWING COMPANYMissoula, MT

Big Sky Brewing Company wasstarted by Neal Leathers, BjornNabozney, and Brad Robinson.Brad and Neal had been homebrew-ers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Mis-soula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. Wheredo the names come from? When we first starting looking atnaming our beers, we knew that we wanted to use Montanacritters as our theme. We had Bjorn’s Mom Jane doing artworkfor us and we told her to paint a bear, a moose, a marmot, abuffalo, a fox, a mountain goat, etc. Then we would look at thepaintings and try to come up with memorable names to gowith the images. The most famous of our brands, MooseDrool, came out of that process. Bjorn and Brad were lookingat Jane’s painting of a moose lifting his head from a pond withwater streaming off of his muzzle. Neal walked past, and see-ing the painting for the first time immediately suggested “it’sa moose, he’s drooling, let’s call it moose drool.” Bjorn andBrad loved the name which Neal immediately beganbackpedaling on worrying that it would be seen as distastefulto too many folks. Obviously, most beer drinkers love thename and the beer that goes with it! Recently we’ve backed offof the animal theme since so many breweries produce “critterbeers,” but you never know what we will come up with next.

Moose Drool Brown Ale - The name soundsa little iffy, but it’s really the best Brown Aleyou’ll ever taste. It’s chocolate brown in colorwith a creamy texture. A malty beer with justenough hop presence to keep it from beingtoo sweet. The aroma mostly comes from themalt with a hint of spice added by the hops.Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and KentGoldings, Liberty, and WILLAMETTE HOPS. Ithas an original gravity of 13 degrees Plato, andis 4.2% alcohol by weight, 5.3% by volume.

Trout Slayer Ale - Trout Slayer is a filteredwheat ale, fermented at cool temperatures, making it a smooth drinkable session beer.Brewed with Palisade, Glacier, and Mt. Hoodhops, this straw colored beer is sure to pleaseany craft beer drinker. Alcohol by weight3.78% alcohol by volume 4.7%.

Big Sky IPA - In Montana, many classic memo-ries are made right after someone says, “Holdmy beer and watch this.” These bold, assertivemoments deserve a bold, assertive beer – BigSky IPA. A distinct hop presence and malty back-bone will leave you refreshed and ready for yourmoment of glory. Hang on tight and enjoy theride. Big Sky IPA has 65 IBU’s, 5% alcohol byweight, and 6.2% alcohol by volume.

We decided to chuck ourjobs… all for beer. Yee-haw.

IRON HORSE BREWERYEllensburg, WA

The Iron Horse Brewery that opened itsdoors in December of 2004 was a bit dif-ferent than today. It had a very mom andpop feel, and featured a look that was as tra-ditional as it gets. Those who knew of it vis-ited regularly, but the regulars were few.For many, the brewery was a thing shrouded in mystery... collegestudents-which comprise a fair percentage of Ellensburg's popu-lation for most of the year-would occasionally see a bottle on astore shelf and ask where it came from. The likely response:"Yeah, I think some dude makes that in his basement or some-thing..." The word just wasn't getting out, and things didn't lookgood for the tiny brewery that made exceptionally tasty ales.Well, a couple of hoodlums in their late-twenties jumped on theopportunity to own and operate their own brewery, and whatresulted is the Iron Horse Brewery you know and love today.

They tweaked some recipes, changed some names, threw someridiculous theme parties to encourage locals to actually see thebrewery with their own eyes, and good things started to happen.Locals started to dig what the guys were doing. You can now findIron Horse Brewery ales on tap or in the bottle in both fine andslightly dubious establishments throughout Washington andNorthern Idaho. You can stop by our tasting room to learn aboutand taste the beer, buy a case or fill a growler, take a tour or downa few pints at the bar, or just give us a hi-five. You MIGHT evenfind an Ellensburg local who knows us as something more thana rumored basement operation.

Quilters Irish Death - Created by the brew-ery's founder, Quilter's Irish Death is what wecall a dark, smooth, ale. Any attempt at classi-fying it just ends up sending beer geeks into astyle guidelines diatribe. So forget style guide-lines. Is your pursuit of micro beer about tast-ing copies of a style that fit guidelines any-ways? (Neither is ours) Irish Death is a maltbomb. We lovingly refer to it as beer candy. Weheart our candy store. While tempting to ses-sion this beer, the name is a necessaryreminder that despite the surprising approach-ability, this beer weighs in at a hefty 7.8% ABV.

High Five Hefe - Wheat, honey and ginger. Ahefe with flavor before the fruit. No lemonrequired. In fact, please spare our beer fromthe embarrassment. Sorry to the loyal IronHorse evangelists who just can't get enough ofthis beer. Summertime only.

REDHOOK ALE BREWERYSeattle, WA

Paul Shipman and Gordon Bowkeractually founded Redhook brewery inSeattle in May of 1981. Why there? Why then? 1) The Pacific Northwestdrank more draft beer than anywhere else in the country and2) the import beer market was growing everywhere. In 1982,the first Redhook Ale was poured. Here’s to two blokes whotook a chance and founded a brewery in an old transmissionrepair shop in Ballard. Here’s to what they dreamed up. Alocal beer with a unique taste and a strong European influence.A passion for the perfect pint, finally found. That originalRedhook Ale was modeled after spicy Belgian ales. Redhookbought the former home of the Seattle Electric Railway as itsnew location in the mid 80’s. The 26,000 square foot buildingallowed the company to build a rather charming brewpubnamed the Trolleyman.

Long Hammer IPA - embraces the IPA tradi-tion of a strong hop profile while remainingapproachable and easy to drink with itssmooth flavor and clean finish. We take the tra-ditional IPA brewing process one step furtherby dry-hopping, or adding hops at the very endof the brewing process. We use Cascade hopsbecause they impart a wonderful hop aromawithout an overpowering hop taste.

Slim Chance Light Ale - combines the bestattributes of a crisp, refreshing ale without theextra calories. Golden kilned malt and atouch of wheat create this smooth, satisfyingale that is not your typical light beer.

Sunrye - One needs a light, refreshing ale toslay a summer thirst. Our golden-colored Sun-rye fits the bill. Brewed with six barley maltsand a touch of rye, it was practically made fortrips to the lake and open-flame cookouts.

ROSLYN BREWING COMPANY Roslyn, WA

The Roslyn BrewingCompany has beenbrewing hand-craftedand full-flavored beersin the old world tradition since 1990. Ourbeers are excellent, full-bodied, German-stylelagers reminiscent of those brewed by theimmigrant miners in our hometown of Roslyn,Washington at the turn of the century. We useonly the finest ingredients, including maltedbarley grown in the Northwest, hops grown inthe Yakima Valley, and ice cold snow-fedwater from the heart of the Cascades, to pro-duce a full-bodied brew with a flavor thatsome say has been missing in domestic beerssince the enactment of Prohibition.

Roslyn Dark Lager - Our original brew. It is amild dark lager with a distinct character, andclosely resembles the lager handcrafted bythe German brewmeisters at the originalRoslyn Brewery and Malting Company onehundred years ago. We use our own recipe ofRoslyn water, fresh from the Cascade Moun-tains, four types of malted barley and threehop varieties to produce this smooth lager.

Brookside Pale Lager - A pale lager beermade without the darker malts that we use inRoslyn Beer. It is hopped primarily with Yaki-ma Hallertau hops, and may remind you of abeer you might find at a small gasthaus inGermany. It is especially popular with peoplewho like full-bodied, lighter beers with mildhopping, and is named for the Brooksideneighborhood of Roslyn.

Developing 12 historic acres

in Iron Horse State Park

The South Cle Elum rail yard project, a cooperative agree-ment between Washington State Parks and the Cascade RailFoundation, is included in the Washington State Parks Centen-nial 2013 Plan, to prepare parks for a 100th birthday celebrationand a second century of service. The Parks Commission is com-mitted to long-distance trail development and to caring for thehundreds of historic buildings in its charge. The Cascade RailFoundation was organized to assist Washington State Parks indevelopment of the South Cle Elum Rail yard Historic Districtand its interpretation.

Washington State Parks and Recreation is the owner of the12 acre depot and railyard site in South Cle Elum, Washington. It is situated on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail which runs thelength of the 110 mile long Iron Horse State Park, the originalrail bed of the Milwaukee Railroad. (Part of the Rails to Trailsprogram. Thus the name of this Brewfest event, Rails To Ales!)

The site consists of the railyard, the depot, built in 1909, andthe substation that was completed in 1920. Still standing but inprivate ownership are the three operators bungalows.

Cascade Rail Foundation members have worked with Wash-ington State Parks since 1999 to rehabilitate the Milwaukee Rail-road Depot in South Cle Elum and now have a beautifullyrestored depot, originally built in 1909, with a developing inter-pretive center and a fully operational "Beanery", the Depot Cafe.

A 2200 foot, 18 stop, ADA accessible interpretive trailthrough the railyard was completed in 2006 to help tell the storyof the site. CRF member Mark Borleske said, “Our long termgoals are to restore the brick substation into a full railroad muse-um to continue to tell the story. We also plan to acquire and dis-play significant pieces of rolling stock as they become available.”

Iron Horse State Park is a 1,612-acre park that was once partof the path of the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul-Pacific Railroad.More than 100 miles of trail, the John Wayne Pioneer Trail, extends from Cedar Falls to the Columbia River. High trestlesprovide spectacular views of the valley below.

The railroad operated between 1908 and 1980, when thecompany went into bankruptcy. The state's Department of Nat-ural Resources acquired much of the property and turned it overto State Parks, which continues to acquire land and makeimprovements to the area.

The John Wayne Pioneer Trail meanders through a variety ofecosystems and geological zones. No motorized vehicles areallowed on the trail with the exception of snowmobiles in winter, which are allowed from Stampede Pass Rd. to Cabin Creek. Horse-drawn wagon users must obtain a key to the gates of Lake EastonState Park. (Check the Parks website for status updates beforeembarking on any trail use due to recent tunnel safety closures.)

In the Cascade Mountains, the trail cuts through basalt out-croppings, exposing large cliffs that tower above the trail. Westof Thorp, the trail cuts through a sandstone deposit.

Remnants of the old railroad are still present: trestles, tun-nels, bridges, signal foundations, ties, spikes, etc.

Kiosks and panels are installed at Hyak, Easton, South CleElum, Thorp and Kittitas with a map of the trail and interpretiveinformation. Learn more about IronHorse State Park at http://www.parks.wa.gov/parks/?selectedpark=Iron%20Horse&subject=all .
