Baragoola Week Ending 7 th August 2011 In attendance: Glen, Peter H, Lance, Nick, Charlie, Gary, Peter C, Geoff E, Geoff L & Mark Visitors: Five This week our income was $260 and outgoings were $0. Don’t forget that all donations over $2 are now tax deductible. Firstly Id like to welcome Dulux aboard as our newest major sponsor; theyve done us a great deal on paint and it now costs us considerably less that the $100 a tin that we were previously paying. Big saving Baragoola eats paint!! The rep arrived on Friday and was shown over the boat by Nick apparently he was pretty impressed with what he saw and Goola is a 200 foot long advertisement for their products too. Also this week weve been in touch with North Heads owners and are working towards an arrangement to retrieve some of their engine equipment for use on Baragoola. This deal will be good for both boats. Watch this space. Baragoola was attended most days this week on Monday and Tuesday Glen and Peter H were on board and Ernie came down later in the week as did Gary, Nick and new recruit Charlie. If you are about during the week and have some spare time check with us if we are onboard help is always welcome! Peter and Glen continued on early this week with the roof work. Peter finished off the last two areas at the foot of the forward wheelhouse that were still a problem area we received a little rain on Saturday and Sunday and Im very pleased to report that absolutely no leaks came in from this area. Another battle won. With this out of the way we can now move to restoring the wheelhouse itself and also doing the work needed on the upper deck underneath it which entails some repairs to the deckhead, installing the permanent lighting and completing the painting up here. Some work has already commenced in this section but with it now permanently dry much more can be done and we can work towards completing the section. To do this well need a woodworker or two so if you can assist itll be great. We also need more painters we now have three of us that do this, a few more would be great.

Baragoola Week Ending 7th August 2011

In attendance: Glen, Peter H, Lance, Nick, Charlie, Gary, Peter C, Geoff E, Geoff L & Mark Visitors: Five This week our income was $260 and outgoings were $0.

Don’t forget that all donations over $2 are now tax deductible.

Firstly I’d like to welcome Dulux aboard as our newest major sponsor; they’ve done us a great deal on

paint and it now costs us considerably less that the $100 a tin that we were previously paying. Big saving

– Baragoola eats paint!! The rep arrived on Friday and was shown over the boat by Nick – apparently he

was pretty impressed with what he saw and Goola is a 200 foot long advertisement for their products

too.

Also this week we’ve been in touch with North Head’s owners and are working towards an arrangement

to retrieve some of their engine equipment for use on Baragoola. This deal will be good for both boats.

Watch this space.

Baragoola was attended most days this week – on Monday and Tuesday Glen and Peter H were on

board and Ernie came down later in the week as did Gary, Nick and new recruit Charlie. If you are about

during the week and have some spare time check with us if we are onboard – help is always welcome!

Peter and Glen continued on early this week with the roof work. Peter finished off the last two areas at

the foot of the forward wheelhouse that were still a problem area – we received a little rain on Saturday

and Sunday and I’m very pleased to report that absolutely no leaks came in from this area. Another

battle won. With this out of the way we can now move to restoring the wheelhouse itself and also doing

the work needed on the upper deck underneath it which entails some repairs to the deckhead, installing

the permanent lighting and completing the painting up here.

Some work has already commenced in this section but with it now permanently dry much more can be

done and we can work towards completing the section. To do this we’ll need a woodworker or two so if

you can assist it’ll be great.

We also need more painters – we now have three of us that do this, a few more would be great.

I was away yesterday in Melbourne so thanks to Nick and Peter for the photos this week and to Nick for

the description of what was done.

Geoff E turned his hand to the external hull on the port side this weekend and cleaned back, rust treated

and repaired a section about three metres in length; this morning Nick and I painted the section. The

finished area is a very good comparison to the rest of the hull – it cleans back nicely and comes up

beautifully. Goes a long way to improving the looks of the hull and of course the work done adds quite a

bit of protection. Other areas that we did as a test several months ago are showing no new rust – a huge

bonus. And of course it’s great seeing Baragoola return back to her proper colours.

Look – you can see the rivets again!

This also highlights the degraded condition of the sponson. We will be removing the wood and this will

stop moisture being trapped and all the attendant problems that brings – i.e. rust. We’ve already

removed several damaged parts of the sponson band in this area and trust me it is bloody heavy! The

band and the wood are “consumables” – they have been replaced many times during the working life of

the boat.

This hull work (internal and external) is receiving a high priority from us and we’ve asked all Saturday

volunteers to spend a couple of hours with it – great to see that some have taken the hint although it’s a

little disappointing to note that our main internal hull worker (Geoff) was the one out there this

weekend. I don’t know how many times we’ve told people “no hull = no boat!”

However it is coming along and every little bit helps. Interestingly the boat has been getting somewhat

higher in the water over the last few months – we have a few theories about this but the above image

shows the effect – the growth is now a few inches above the waterline.

This week also saw the arrival of our new air receiver tank with Gary, Ernie and Glen getting it aboard.

This highlights the ingenuity the guys need to go to get material on board – with no land access

everything has to come over by boat. The following sequence shows the task from beginning to end.

At Gary’s place a hoist lifts the tank into the medium tender

Which then gets towed over behind the “South Stain”

To the waiting temporary hoist between two loading gates

And all safely on board!

This replaces the original receiver that has been removed. This one will stay on the wheels for a while as

it will allow us to move it around and supply heavy duty air for the needle guns and chisels.

Eventually it’ll go downstairs and be used for its’ ultimate purpose – air for the dual horns.

Saturday saw Gary and Peter C off to Waterview Wharf to collect more floor plates. Withn these back

on board Geoff L started cleaning them up.

Noticed that a few more of the completed ones have made their way downstairs – improves the safety,

amenities and the cosmetic appearance of the underdeck areas – I’m looking forward to the day when

they are all down and we no longer have to jump from stringer to stringer to get around!

Further work was done downstairs with Peter doing some cleanup work on No. 4 English Electric – no

photo so I’ll get down there later in the week to investigate.

Ernie was also downstairs several times this week – generally being camera shy! But Nick managed to

snap a shot of some of the work he’s been doing on restoring the circulating pump for the gearbox oil.

The small electrical pump is actually of the freshwater pump and it (unfortunately) wasn’t quite up to

the job demanded of it so Ernie took it off this weekend for repairs.

Much painting was done this weekend with new recruit Charlie applying a nice layer of high gloss white

to the deckhead in the mid ships lower deck. The effect with the lights is beautiful – the reflection off

the deep colour looks great.

Meantime, Mark was outside on the upper deck port side applying the cream to the deck house – this

side is now half completed with the first coat.

External painting in progress

Some of the window frames here have already received their coats of Red Oxide – with this done the

whole window looks much larger. A line of trim also needs to be applied at the base of the deckhouse as

well.

In general the external wood is in excellent condition and getting the paint onto it will help to keep it

that way. We are fortunate that no rot has got into this as it would cause all sorts of issues as well as

meaning that we’d have to replace original material. Fortunately though this is not the case!

Ernie spent some time doing temporary repairs to the funnel cowl – this has been a source of rain water

ingress and it was noticeable in today’s showers that less rain is now getting through – further work still

needs to be done however to complete this.

Ernie repairing the metal shroud around the funnel

And finally today Nick and I did some painting in the battery compartment. This area has been

completely cleaned back (on the hull) and treated with rust preventer and it’s now time to move in and

do the work required to the cosmetic appearance.

To this end, we began applying the first coat of high gloss enamel white on the hull and it turned out to

be quite a transformation with what had been a dark and dull area brightening up considerably.

This paint work will lead to several good results: further protection for the hull from any rain water

coming in from the decks (it’ll simply run off), general improvement in looks for the area and, also, will

allow us to cut back on the lighting used in the area.

At present there are three strings of temporary lights in here and they do place a burden on our limited

power supply. We should be able to knock out at least two of these strings once the painting is

completed.
