This week

A very, very busy week has just passed on board with an enormous amount accomplished (and

planned). Thanks to the very long weekend we saw volunteers on board every day from Thursday to

Saturday – and a few of those were brand new additions to the ship.

We also had several visitors on Saturday which garnered some interest, a donation and a new member –

all most welcome!

This newsletter is a little late – so it’ll actually cover the last three weeks on board – I’ll break down each

area that’s been worked on to make it easier

To start with, a big effort has been put in to the port side of late – this is all prep work for the boarding

stairs that will be going in shortly; I’m pleased to report this should be happening within the next few

weeks and once completed access to Goola will improve out of sight. The work involved included

repairing and restoring the bulwarks, covering the decks and removal of the old loading ramps on the

upper deck – these were replaced in the 80s and have not held out too well at all.

The bulwarks in particular have been a very fiddly job – every piece of rust needs to be removed and

then taken back to bare metal, once that’s done repairs to the metal needs to be completed, then anti-

rust paint and finally the first of three coats of Warm Stone to return them to their former glory. Hard

work but the effort is well worth it and the midships area is finally starting to scrub up very nicely

indeed. We’ve scheduled some work to the tops of these to replace the steel and then we’ll be able to

install the new handrails, a bit more work to do first though before that happens but it is slowly and

steadily moving to completion.

Rust treated, a section in progress and an untouched area – all phases that the bulwarks go through

A week later, another area is completed and under anti rust paint

Page 8: Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 270413.pdf · Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 Upcoming events Planning and preparation has started for our next open day (date TBA). Annual

Then a little more....

Followed by repairs and the start of the top coating of paint! Note the new deck covers as well.

Page 9: Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 270413.pdf · Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 Upcoming events Planning and preparation has started for our next open day (date TBA). Annual

Outside has also “had the treatment” – a lot trickier as we need to prevent refuse entering the harbour.

As part of the work here nine deck covers were prepared and installed – these work in two ways; they

make the deck safer and they waterproof it thus protecting the internal hull below. As a bonus it looks

neater too.

Prep work for the deck covers

The other work in this area involves removal of the old loading ramps – they are very, very rotten, look

unsightly and are dangerous. Although Goola is developing a “skeletal” look on this side it’s far better

than the decrepit look these items were fostering. We’ll replace these and the load bearers as well.

These extend along the outside of the fore and aft weather decks so a decision was made to start

removing the rotten timbers on those decks as well – the aft weatherdeck is now off-limits as a result.

And so we move inside – both staircases have received some attention over the last few weeks, in

particular the aft staircase has gained a final coat of paint and now only needs a few touch-ups and the

second set of treads installed.

Now upstairs we travel to the wheelhouse (forward) – work here is once again progressing with some

repairs and painting taking place. We have been trying to paint the outside but poor weather a couple of

weeks in a row stymied this attempt – perhaps now we’re heading towards a drier spell we’ll be able to

do it!

Other work on this deck was also done, mainly on the funnel shroud which went under another coat of

white paint following final repairs to it – it won’t stay this way – everytime the main engines are started

it has a habit of collecting soot – maybe we should have the engineers clean it down after an engine run

In the meantime, it’s blindingly white!

There’s more work required on this deck too, now the rebuild of the forward wheelhouse has

progressed we can start with the interior. It needs to be lined, deck repaired in places and re-plumbed.

Windows need to be refitted and a partition wall between the Master’s Cabin and the wheelhouse

needs to be erected.

Also to be done up here is the restoration of the handrails (Peter has already done a lot of work on their

support structure) and eventually the return of the dodgers – that in itself will make a huge difference to

the appearance of the ship.

The aft wheelhouse hasn’t been ignored either, it has been cleaned out and a lot of rotten timber

removed and props installed. In itself this will be quite a big job as more work is needed to save this

particular area.

Most of the deck is now covered over with new timber and only small sections need to be completed –

this has resulted (along with better drainage) in very, very little rainwater making it through to the decks

below – a huge improvement indeed!

The aft wheelhouse remains a problem area though and it’s the location where most water is getting in

and this has a deleterious effect on the areas below it including the Ladies Saloon which is suffering a bit

– however it does have very clean decks after a storm........

Page 16: Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 270413.pdf · Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 Upcoming events Planning and preparation has started for our next open day (date TBA). Annual

The upper deck is going through a transformation at the moment with a lot of the poor deckhead at the

forward end now replaced and the removal of other rotten areas progressing rapidly. Very fortunately

this rot doesn’t extend throughout the deck – this is another example of damage caused by the failed

roof above.

Page 17: Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 270413.pdf · Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 Upcoming events Planning and preparation has started for our next open day (date TBA). Annual

The forward ladder gained a first coat of Warm Stone this week as well – though I’m not sure Ray was

taking the job seriously! Or maybe he was just happy to be there

Work below decks is also proceeding nicely with the guys having reinstalled the original compressor on

the new air tank. This also entailed installing a beefier motor to drive it and fine-tuning it, but now it’s

done we’ll be able to deploy more air tools around the ship which, in turn, means work can be

completed quicker. A very good thing indeed.

Page 18: Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 270413.pdf · Baragoola Week Ending 27th April 2013 Upcoming events Planning and preparation has started for our next open day (date TBA). Annual

This is one of the areas where we will use replacement materials if needed but will also use the original

fabric. The tank is a replacement (the original was deemed unusable), the motor is new and the

compressor itself is the original one installed in 1960 (it even has the date on it.)

The sound adds to the historical reality too – the original compressor has a different (more uneven)

sound than the modern one we were using temporarily.

And finally onto the hull which has been getting a lot of attention of late!
