Committee News

Nothing from the committee this week!

Finances

Our bank balance increased by $40 this week

From the editor

Our new postal address: PO Box 374 Crows Nest, NSW, 1585 Please ensure you address any correspondence to this address in future. Over the coming weeks and months we will be increasing our fundraising activities and looking at ways to vastly ramp up our ability to earn money. The restoration of Baragoola needs a large sum of money – we are totally funded by donations and will be seeking ways to interest large commercial donors and sponsors – for this we need the help of all association members and are looking to the broader membership to assist. The small amounts we gain through private donations and sale of items is enough for the day to day running of the association, but we need some serious money if we are to achieve our goal of getting Baragoola slipped and the hull repaired (or areas replaced as needed) if we are to keep this important heritage item going as a viable entity for many years to come. We will shortly be asking all our members to assist with this task and helping us find the sort of funding we need – this is something we hope all our members and friends can help out with.

Our sites

Have you visited our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ManlyFerry ? It’s updated

(sometimes several times a day) and is one of our primary methods of communicating with the public at

large. We’ve got over 100 ‘likes’ so far! There’s quite a few videos posted there as well. Our posts are

also being distributed to a wider audience by another Facebook page called What’s On Northern

Beaches? (http://www.facebook.com/Whatsonnorthernbeaches) (not affiliated to us) which is a great

resource for people living on the peninsula – check it out. Our main source of important information is

our own site at http://baragoola.com.au For people with an interest in Sydney’s ferries (past and

current) we have a sister site at http://www.ferriesofsydney with a very activity community forum and

on a wider rage, our other sister site Forgotten Sydney (http://www.firgotten Sydney) is all about

Sydney’s historical past.

Souvenir items

Recently we introduced some new promotional items and they are in limited quantities so if you want one you’ll need to get in quickly. For the first time we have caps and indeed we had to refresh the order twice to cope with demand!

This week

This weekend was mainly one of preparation for our Open day and my thanks go out to the eight team

members who were on board and all worked together with the one goal of prepping the vessel for her

visitors. A great effort put in by this small handful of guys and we need a few more this coming weekend

to finish the job.

First off was Ernie who spent quite a bit of time on our workboat installing the battery, cabling and a

new starter switch directly on the outboard motor; very neat job and the boat should be much easier to

start now.

Ernie has spent quite a bit of time on the small boat in the last couple of weeks and the effort is most

appreciated as this small boat seems to require way more effort (for its size) than does Baragoola

herself!

With that out of the way both he and Peter c spent some time below decks tidying up and generally

making the equipment spaces much safer for our visitors. As part of this work the batteries were

charged, one of the Gardeners’ run for an extended time and the No. 1 English electric was operated

and tuned to ensure it’ll be ready for a great display on the day.

Peter had been on board earlier in the week as well and and has spent a considerable amount of time in

the engine room laying new temporary flooring – a great effort and this will make that space much safer

both for our visitors in a couple of weeks and for the crew during the ongoing work that is occurring

down there.

Thanks to both Ernie and Peter for the effort put in – we always worry a little when unfamiliar people

are in those areas!

Back upstairs and the cleaning continued with Nick, Glen and myself clearing out the Ladies Salon and

sweeping, vacuuming and mopping the floors as well as Nick doing the windows (a little bit carried away

as nearly the entire boat was done by the end of the day!).

Midships on the lower deck has become a bit of a dumping ground and Peter C worked hard to clear the

area out – everything that was in here is now relocated to the Smoking Saloon which has become a de-

facto storage area/workroom. This area will be used to set up our shop on the day.

Much tidier and safer now!

Peter M, Peter H and Geoff L were busy upstairs and the entire top deck has been cleared and tidied and

swept – thanks guys, the effort is vastly appreciated.

Our very busy man Peter C took on the job of mounting our flat screen TV upstairs as well – this will

having a rolling display on the day and is now securely, safely and professional mounted.

As a bonus, the area will then be later kitted out as a breakout area for the work crew and we’ve

received a donation of a vinyl lounge to place in the area – nearly all the comforts of home

To finish off his day Peter then tidied the forward wheelhouse – not sure where he got all of his energy

from......

Peter M and Glen had, earlier in the week, collected more mooring lines from Sydney Ferries and we

now have sufficient to complete the replacement job that Nick has been doing as well as some spares.

These are a very welcome donation indeed!

In other work myself and Peter M prepped four more boards for the temporary deck covering – these

are now laid in place and only a small amount of work needs to be completed on the newest additions.

We now have one whole side of the boat that is mostly covered increasing both the safety of this deck

and the ability to stop water getting in through the old deck. Special thanks to Ross for the ongoing

donation of this material.

All of the problem deck areas on the starboard side are now covered over – a big sigh of relief too! We

only need about three more pieces on this side and it is done – then we can start on the port side.

The afternoon was spent laying safety treads on one side of the aft flight of stairs with four of the crew

helping out – these now look great and this section at least is now slip proof and safe. Not quite the

original brass but the effect is great all the same.

Not much more remains to be done, but a few hands next week and a couple of hours work will see the

last of the cleaning work completed. A great effort by everyone involved on Saturday.

On saturday one of our volunteers asked what sort of new volunteers we need (as in what tasks remain to be done). In no particular order here's just some of the jobs that need doing: - We have all the timber needed to construct the new railing on the lower deck, they are pretty much already the right size, but need to be mounted and bolted on (with some work done to the metal underneath) and shaped (slight curve on the tops) - Painters - there's still a lot to be painted and this is probably one of the easiest jobs on the boat - Metal forward and aft boat decks still need work (needlegunning, patching and painting up) - Forward flagpole repairs and remounting - Replacement of some internal decking timbers - Repairs to most of the lower loading doors (partial reconstruction in some parts) - All window frames removed, stripped, repaired if required, some sashes need fixing and varnishing - Wheelhouse rebuilds (so we need chippies) - Plumbing for the toilets and basins in both sets of amenities - Construction and fitout of a proper galley - Rebuild of the cattle ramps (upper deck loading ramps) - Restoration of metal framework on both weather decks -Deck repairs on both weatherdecks - Most importantly, we need an electrician All of the jobs (and a few more) are needed to get Baragoola up to scratch for static use so we can generate income for the most important job - replating the hull, after that we can move Goola closer to our ultimate goal - full operation.

Special skills are not needed, just a willingness to spend an hour or two every few weeks with a really

great core crew of volunteers!

That’s it for this week, we hope to see a few extras next Saturday to help out with the final preparations for the 13th – we also need a few more people on the day to assist with our visitors (all the committee has already indicated they will be there and a couple of others as well, but we need two or three more). If you are on Facebook you can follow us at https://www.facebook.com/ManlyFerry We’re also on Twitter as #MVBaragoola – updates are posted fairly regularly. Our main website is now www.baragoola.com.au and if you have Google Talk installed you can chat to us if anyone is online and nearby the computer – add [email protected] as a friend. And, last but not least, we also have a flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/65669741@N08/ For general business you should call our message bank on 02 9294 3168 and leave a message – we’ll return your call pretty quickly as this is checked daily.
